Had a takeaway and this is the worst food I have tasted, absolutely diabolical, eat at your own risk

Placed an order for delivery which arrived early. The food was hot, good amount of meat and the portion size was perfect. Will definitely be using again.

Absolutely delicious, turned out to be the best Chinese we've ever had. Everything was fresh, it wasn't greasy, it was cooked to perfection.

Cold when we walked in. Sat next to radiator and it was turned on. So soon warm. No liquor licence yet and a £5 corkage charge on wine. Made do with soft drinks. Food was excellent set menu for 4 between 5 was great value for money and plenty of food. Very nearly did not review as they insisted on adding a 10% service charge which is labelled on the receipt as cash discount! No sign of service charge on menu either.

First things first, the food here is good, however lots of gripes that would stop me returning, amongst them; No alcohol licence so no beer with dinner. No dress code for staff, so looks unprofessional. No atmosphere in the restaurant & also cold. I hope they can rectify these & return this restaurant to its former glory.

Came here with the family for a birthday treat for my birthday and thoroughly enjoyed all the different foods served to us. A very tasty selection with friendly staff who were quick to take away dirty stuff and replace with next course. No waiting around at this restaurant. Excellent.

Has been closed down, "under refurbishment" for months

Went here with a group, starters were plentiful but consisted mainly of deep fried food in batter, mains not a lot different, could have done with more vegetabls. The carpets up the stairs and across the landing leading to the toilets are disgusting, the toilets themselves not much better. I will never go back.

Somewhere to go for nice chinese buffet

Enjoyed the service and food here. Staff amazing and served quickly between eat set meal. Not enough food on platters when shared between 4 people. Clean and comfortable.

Food great but the back of house is a disgrace

Staff are always friendly the food is always good they've got some new furniture and table dressings since I last visited. I really enjoy going.

Myself, husband, family and friends have been to Shanghai many many times and are always met by friendly staff, and excellent service and food cooked to order, if you want more, just ask. Don't listen to the bad reviews, anyone who has a bad experience generally about anything should take it up with the staff at the time and give them an opportunity to rectify matters. Having a meal and then complaining afterwards is not helpful to the restaurant or other visitors.Am visiting again this week with friends and we have chosen this restaurant for its reliability to deliver in every way.

Read a couple of bad reviews and a bit dubious, but have always had good meals before. Ordered a take-away for 4 and its was absolutely scrummy. The meat, duck chicken beef, and the prawns all tender and delicious. Excellent meal thank you.

we visited this restaurant recently there was a group of 15 of us seated at 7 pm very poor waiter service all they were botherd about was colleting money for the drinks food was average we wasn't offered a menu so starters was what they decided to bring out a only 4 king prawns between 15 people? sevice was shocking waited 1 hr for a glass of water for my grandauther a still eating a 10 pm waist of time don't waist your money avoid

This restaurant was lovely a couple of years ago when it had a chef and proper waiter , food was lovely then , went there last year had below average ready type meals and rude service and decided to never eat there again , we now use the help yourself buffet a few doors up as food much better and much better customer service also value for money , but sadly friends had organised a big family reunion and goodbyes at shanghai and against my better judgement I attended recently for this thinking maybe it had got better , POOR POOR FOOD SERVICE FURNISHINGS ALL SEEMS TO BE COST CUTTING NOT BOTHERED ABOUT CUSTOMERS AT ALL , Food was awful we where given no choice as we where a large party the one waitress brought around 8 starters for around 16 of us there choice not ours not even basic seaweed , so around half a starter each !!!!! we where then offered duck 3 small trays !!!!! then finally one main each if you chose what they hadn't ran out of oh forgot to say 4 bowls of rice to share , had to ask for more crackers then wait 30 minutes for them to come out , also had to pay as you go for drinks as they said they would get confused if we didn't normally restaurants cope quite well with doing the bills at the end , could go on forever but wont bore you all anymore suffice to say I will never be eating there again ...... You have been warned !!!!!!!!!!

We visited the restaurant tonight (Friday) after searching for a Chinese restaurant in the area. After looking at good reviews we decided to visit.We were greeted by a lovely waitress who quickly adhered to our needs. We had the all you can eat buffet which is all cooked to order and brought to your table.We had a selection of starters: bbq ribs, prawn toast, vege spring rolls, battered prawns... Followed by duck with pancakes and mushroom soup. We then had a selection of crispy beef, vermecilli, mushroom in black bean and a first time try of fish in ginger and spring onion which was amazing! All of the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious. I would highly recommend a visit here.The service was super and the man and lady who served us were extremely friendly and accommodating.Definitely will be visiting again. Thanks for a lovely meal.

This was our first visit and won't be our last. Most of the issues raised in other reviews seem to have been addressed. The food and service were very good. The portions were fairly small but as the menu says "you can always order again". Slightly smaller portions also means you can experience lots of dishes before you're full. You don't feel rushed by the service but plates are cleared quite quickly.

Came early on a Saturday night and four of us had the all you can eat Chinese deal. It was certainly plentiful and there was a good choice throughout. It was freshly cooked and they had excellent service too. The place itself could do with tarting up a bit - the seats had totally worn through patches and the carpet was a bit grotty as I walked in and felt like my shoes stuck to it! It was a shame, because the food itself was very good. Will I go again? Yes, because at the end of the day you won't eat off the carpet (hopefully)

Firstly, lovely waiter who was friendly and helpful. However, the starters were cheap frozen ones, with no presentation whatever. The soup was inedible as so so salty. The toilets were clean, but the staircase etc that they were located in were so damp that the smell made you feel physically sick. A very tired restaurant that needs some desperate TLC. Carlsberg didn't taste right, so with everything taken into consideration, we decided to leave without our main meals. Won't be returning...

Seems a popular place, food ok but very " beige" , could do with some fresh salad and vegetables included.My one huge complaint - lack of choice of drinks and the price charged for drinks. Cheap wine offered but not cheap to buy, no variety at all. Really angry to be charged such ridiculous price for soda water!!! Tried to reason with the manager about it but he would not budge over it. Hate being ripped off!

Came for a meal to the Shanghai Restaurant this week for the first time. Thank goodness we had booked as the place was almost full- certainly not what we expected.The service was excellent throughout the evening and the staff need commending.Our starter options were of a high quality and, although there was a wait for our main course options, when they arrived, they too, were delicious.This is a buffet restaurant whereby you choose your options from the table. We tasted ribs, spring rolls, satay,lemon and butter chicken, all of which were excellent.Sweet and sour prawns, chicken in black bean sauce, special fried rice and beef in ginger were equally delicious.We could have ordered more options but felt our options were more than sufficient.The only downside and complaint was the gentleman's toilet - an area that needs addressing quickly otherwise H&S will get you!!

Went with a friend on a Friday & had the all you can eat buffet, which was amazing, I highly reccommend the garlic butter chicken starter, but the only downfall was the bill. I wasn't aware it was more expensive on a Friday but happily paid the price as the food was well worth it. Have been a few times and the service is always very cheerful. Will definitely be returning.

Our take away from here was the first and last food was very poor and not as described during the order very disappointed

Having dropped my daughter at the locals swimming pool for a party I walked the short distance into town centre for some food. The Shanghai Chinese restaurant had decent reviews so I opted for that. My first impression of the restaurant was that it looked awfully tired and dated, and the menu was also quite filthy and shabby which did not fill me with confidence. The young lady waitress was more than hospitable and is clearly very good at her job and I started to relax. In all fairness my meal was well cooked, hot and tasted fresh, although maybe just a little too oily. The value was fair for two courses and a soft drink so in all fairness if this place was smartened up a little it would have scored a higher review.

Haven't eaten at this place for a while due to so so service.The waiters basically dictate to you what you can order on the "all you can eat" and the portions of food are small.The whole place needs a deep clean, and don't even go to the toilet upstairs as this will completely put you off your meal....

I can see why they are the best Chinese resturant in rushden went for the buffet all your choices are cooked fresh (not sitting in containers to picked over like other Chinese restaurants) every course was superb staff were excellent ant the owner asked us if we enjoyed the answer is FANTASIC

Ordered a takeaway one of the dishes was not hot, the Chicken satay was some tasteless brown\green concoction which was more vegetable than the very few pieces of chicken in the dish. Chilli & Salt squid the batter was soft and the portion was meagre, that's being polite. This is not the 1st time I have been disappointed by their food, I won't be back.

I have been to this restaurant many times and will be returning, by far the best Chinese in rushden, the satay chicken is the best I have ever tasted, you can also order starters as a main dish with no problem, great food at a great price , highly recommend

Lovely staff '4 star' but the food is only 2 star - over-fried and my wife (who is Chinese so I assume knows about such things) said that she thinks they fry everything in the same oil which leads to everything tasting similar.Would we go there again - probably not - although the staff were very good and when we commented to the owner that the sweet and sour chicken was overly crispy he explained that it was that way because most of his customers liked that (extra crispy) and offered to cook us some more but not so well done - he did and it was better - but not great...Are we expecting too much for a restaurant in a small town like Rushden? Very probably.

Visited a week ago with a friend for dinner. Been here several times before and the staff have always been a little too much but last week it crossed the line from helpful and cheeky to rude and unbelievable. Some manners and privacy and perhaps customers would leave tips! The food was fine though I have had nicer meals there. A little disappointing if I'm honest.

This has got to be the best chinese restaurant in Northamptonshire.Eat as much as you like freshly cooked served at your table.Try crispy beef without sauce or choose a sauce to your liking.Brilliant service from Paul and excellent food from Peter.Cannot fault the way they are willing to manipulate the menu to your liking.

This is my second visit and have really enjoyed it both times! Staff are lovely and friendly, all you can eat buffet is freshly cooked and served to your table so no Luke warm dried out dishes. You never feel rushed, the only downside is the price of soft drinks but still would highly recommend this place!

We visited Shanghai in rushden today, my first impression as we arrived outside the restaurant was that it was just going to be a cheap chinese restaurant offering nothing special and i thought it was going to be very bland. I WAS WRONG inside this very basic looking restaurant was an absolutely lovely selection of food, full of flavour and cooked to perfection. The starters were my favourite part of the meal i tried many dishes. The portion sizes were big. The price of just £12 for an all you can eat was an absolute bargain and the staff were great, very friendly and helpful. I would recomend it there anytime and will definitely be going there again. One other thing to say despite the great service we recieved there was no hidden service charges like in most chinese restaurant. Thank you for such a nice meal. Not the most fancy looking restaurant inside and outside but its the food quality and price that counts

We walked in thinking that it was not going to be that great after waiting a few minutes to be seated we looked at the big menu ordered the starter and that's where it began a taste out of this world the food was absolutely amazing couldn't fault it the service was great they didn't rush you you was able to take your time the price is really good the quantity is big and it really really is All you can eat

Dined here one evening with the Buffet style offering , unlike some "buffet" style places there is no holding of food on Hotplates instead you order from the menu which has starters, 2nd course, main course and dessert choice , each dish is cooked to order and is piping hot at the table ! even the plates are hot , always a good sign of service, and the plates are cleared when finished , offered breaks in-between courses which is welcome , service was very good with good interaction between Guests & Staff at all times , we left full & happy with our dining experience at Shanghai ! One thing to note : the WC is up a flight of stairs so people with mobility problems make sure you have been before dining :) otherwise Wheelchair access is good !

Not the best iv eaten, we opt for the buffet which I think for what we ate was alittle overpriced, the table was booked after us and we basically was rushed throughout we need up with takeaway desserts not by choice, haven't been back since..

As i have tried every Chinese restaurant in the area this was the last one to negotiate.We had the spare ribs which were quite fatty but not too bad.My wifes chicken chow mein was reasonable as was my chicken curry.Service was exceptional i must add....but after reading the reviews i was expecting a million dollars.....but received a score.Not bad but have had better.

Turned away for takeaway when open at lunchtime??!! This establishment would rather turn down business when it is just as easy to pop the food into a tub as it is to place it on a plate. Bonkers.

Although the service, staff and food was good, it was completely let down by the overall appearance of the restaurant.It needs a complete refurbish, a tired looking carpet, worn out chairs, musty spell going up the stairs to the toilets. My shoes kept sticking to the floor in the Gents and apparently the Ladied was the same.

The owner is now the chef and I must say the food has become a lot tastier.llhe will even tweak a meal to yourv requirements,subject to not being to busy.try it today you will be impressed all freshly cooked no bain maries here.

Taken to this restaurant as a birthday treat by really good friends. The food is in a buffet style cooked fresh when you order. Plenty of choice & you can keep going back for more. The staff was really friendly & helpful, nothing too much to ask for. Excellent value for money. Will definitely be going back again.

This is the best Chinese I have been to. Peter is a great host, never rushes you have frequently been the last to leave (along with Carol)The best way to have food is have the all you can eat Buffett. Every dish is cooked fresh to order and boy is it worth the wait.Have as many starters as you want, then onto the duck, and then as many mains. Have never got to the PhDs as soooo full up. Be a facebook friend and you can have all this for £13 great value.

This is a Chinese buffet with a difference! Rather than having the dishes sitting out on display, sometimes for some time, you order, it's cooked fresh, you eat what you have, order more, and keep going until you are full. The food is freshly cooked, delicious and great value for money! Definitely the best Chinese buffet I have experienced. Occasionally we order take out from here too, still great quality food!Friendly, fast service!

I don't usually do reviews but this is a special occasion...The staff are quite frankly amazing both personally and professionally (a rare occurrence in a takeaway) Both polite yet accommodating.Service was prompt but you didn't feel rushed, and the restaurant is nicely separated for takeaways and eating in ( I hate feeling in the way or like I'm a secondary concern when taking out)Food is obviously the most important part of this review and Shanghai doesn't disappoint, clean and full of taste (usually an either or with Chinese takeouts) ...Oh and service time was top notch!

I decided to treat my girlfriend to a meal out and asked where she would like to go for dinner and she found that the Shanghai Chinese restaurant had good reviews on trip advisor and is less than a mile from out house so we decided to try there. When we arrived we were sat on a table in the corner near the front door which was next to the cupboard which the the waiters kept going into to get clean table cloths. I was sat on a chair which had cardboard boxes directly next to it and below it. Not the best start.The restaurant itself looks very poorly decorated. There is a crimson colored carpet with LED lights in the ceiling with some form of Chinese lantern stapled to the ceiling below which is white with the occasional stripe of magnolia where they have tried to touch it up. There was a bowl of prawn crackers waiting for us when we arrived which had gone slightly stale. I asked one waiter if I could have a pot of sweet and sour sauce to go with them and was told 'we don't do that'. I asked the next waiter who then brought me a pot of sauce straight the way. We ordered the starters which were average. The satay chicken was nice but the other two chicken dishes were deep fried and looked re-used. By the time me and my girlfriend finished our starters we both had an insatiable thirst. I understand this is how buffets make their money, however this was another level. We decided that as we didn't want to skip the second course and go straight on to the mains. I ordered first as my girlfriend was still deciding. I order lemon chicken, chicken satay, shredded beef and egg friend rice, in between each dish the waiter said 'is that it' which came across as trying to make me feel guilty for ordering the 'all you can eat' food. The waiter then took my menu and also attempted to take away my girlfriends menu and walk off, I had to tell him that my girlfriend would like to order as well to get him back, at this point we were very close to leaving the restaurant. My girlfriend ordered 1 dish and then the waiter just said 'thank you and walked off before anything else could be ordered. I then had to wait for him to come back near our table to order the rest of the food we wanted and he told us to wait and see as it may not fit on the table (a big round table made for 4 people). When the mains arrived they didn't live up to expectation at all. The chicken in the satay chicken and the chicken in blanck bean sauce felt like Jelly (I rested my fork on top of the chicken and it sank through with no pressure from me). We were in the restaurant for about 45 minutes and were asked 5 times if we wanted more drinks. My girlfriend is now ill and can't stay far away from the toilet which has just topped off our night. This is quite possible the worst dining experience of my 23 year old life.

Simply excellent. The best way I know to assess a restaurant is to try the simplest dishes, the ones which form the basis of the more complex dishes, for example, plain noodles. I did that here, and they were excellent. The more complex dishes are absolutely delicious, the staff are consistently cheerful and welcoming and the prices are more than reasonable. I almost never give 5 stars or 10/10, but the Shanghai has earned it.

We visit this restaurant regularly, and we are always impressed. Very good food, the chicken satay is amazing. Very comfortable and friendly. Superb value for money.

Staff - think both the male staff are partners in the business - at first appear attentive but then utterly annoying - very pushy, over bearing. Food is hit and miss - lots of orange deep fried food - especially the starters. Some over cooked (won tons) and quite small portions. Ribs were tiny niblets all bone and sauce. middle course of duck was a little strange - the meat was so shredded it was almost minced and very dry. Cucumber was old and yellowing. My partner was eating and paused to take a drink when their plate was whipped away with some of the starter still on it. When ordering our main the waiter (one of the mangers) kept saying 'is that it' after every dish we ordered - we only ordered 3 between us. Portions of main course were small with only 3 prawn balls between 2 of us. The mains were okay and quite tasty. Lots of strong salty flavours though. No we wouldn't go back which is a shame as Rushden lacks a good Chinese Restaurant. Will stick to a take away next time

Visited on a Saturday night, they managed to squeeze 2 of us in at late notice.Very welcoming and the service was good all night and we didn't feel rushed in anyway.Plenty to choose from and the food sizes were very generous. The food was piping hot!! Only gripe would be that some of the items on the starters (deep fried items) looked far from homemade.Prices very reasonable and food tasty and plentiful. It is quite small and cramped in there though and the toilets are up some steep stairs.Would definitely visit again.

i have been to Shanghai a few times now, on every occasion, the waiter seems to be a bit too much. he constantly keeps trying to get you to buy more drinks and gets funny when you order want you want. we kept going back because the food is good. and well worth the money, but the staff can be really annoying and make you feel like your eating to much!. we didnt over pig out, but when we ordered he seemed to be pee'd off with us. went the other night, both of us had bad stomachs the next day, and constant thirsts. this is because its full of salt, too much of it!. after this, and other experiences, we will not return. shame, because the food is tasty :(

My friends and I (age range 16-17) have recently started going out for proper meals now we're that little bit older and we want to feel more responsible and usually we can't really do that because most pubs are expensive and clubs don't let us in but Shanghai is a brilliant choice because it's got a reasonable price on food and drinks and is in a great place right in the middle of town so everyone can get to it easily. I would advise anyone looking for a great birthday dinner or a night out with your mates to go there as it's affordable, easily found and fantastic food.

This restuarant recently re-opened and is now a buffet style, the main and best thing is you order directly from the menu and don't have to pick from food left in hot plates. The staff are very attentive and aim to please, even melting chocolates to put sauce on ice cream. The price is reasonable and the quantity more than any appetite could manage, if you are hungry it simply keeps coming. My only minor gripes are some of the battered items seem to be reheated or over cooked and can be a little too crisp and occasionally they run out of certain dishes (mostly Sunday nights) but there are lots of others to chose from - otherwise it is lovely. There are 4 courses, appetisers, duck, main meals, desert - but can mix it up as you wish, if you want a double dose of crispy duck then that's what you get.

I was surprised to learn the restaurant has been there for 4 years and we hadn't visited before as we live local. We were welcome from stepping inside and chose the buffet which is eat all you like. You can just keep eating but with such a choice we were spoilt and will have to go back to try the dishes we didn't have this time. The staff were very friendly and attentive and quickly cleared any finished plates with a smile and offers of more courses if we wished. Phew ! it was exceptional value and good quality. We will certainly go again. I was told they plan to open lunchtimes in near future too.

Over the years we have enjoyed going to All you can eat buffets but now we have found this wonderful place we know there is no comparison bteween the 2. At the Shanghai the food is hot, fresly cooked and very tasty. Although ther dessert is very limited the main courses more than make up for it. We were disapppointed recently when we couldn't order a takeaway which is the only reason I have not given 5 stars

What a great buffet option. Order as many dishes as you like.All the dishes were freshly prepared and cooked on order.We went for the waiter's suggestion for starters as the choice could be overwhelming for some. Out came some delightful small dishes, the satay sauce was a particular favourite.We followed this by the standard crispy duck. We had so much duck that we had to re-order the vegetables and sauce that accompany the pancakes and ducks.Then onto mains, where a variety of noodles, fried beansprouts and rice was served with a variety of chicken, beef and squid dishes. The chicken curry and the salt and chilli squid were definitely highlights of the meal.A thoroughly enjoyable evening, with some very high standard cuisine.Very well priced.Recommended

I can fully understand the consistently great reviews this restaurant has. However, it is not a buffet in any shape. It is better than that. It is a fixed price for a choice of over 70 Chinese dishes. All freshly cooked, all tasted great and served by friendly staff. You can choose as many dishes as you wish. Main courses sensibly come as half portions. So it is all you wish to eat...cooked fresh and served to your table. Drinks are sensibly priced.So why not a 5? Quite simply if you are old, infirm, disabled or unable to climb very steep stairs, there are NO washroom facilities available to you. Had we known, we obviously would not have used this restaurant. We feel it important others should know too. A spectacularly disappointing end to a gastronomic chinese treat.

We went here for dinner with my two children 7&9 and my parents..... tasty freshly cooked chinese. The restaurant itself is very basic and plain but food and service is alway excellent.

Went here last night as part of a party of 8 and had a fantastic night. The food was so so good and just kept coming. What really made my night though was the staff....I have never been in a place with such amazing service, nothing too much trouble and the guys in there had us laughing all night. It was my first visit but it definitely won't be my last.

Weekends I believe price is £14.50.Meal courses were a good range of starters, second course of soups or duck, then a good selection of main course.Desert options a little light, but I had no room.Friendly and attentive staff, this easily makes the grade of being our Chinese restaurant of choice in the area.

I went back to shanghai once again last night and like always was not at all disappointed. The food tasted amazing and the staff are so friendly. I love that the food is at a fixed price, making it very cheap no matter how much you eat! Definitely recommend to anyone in the area!

I love the food at this place and have recommended several friends to it. However last night tried to ring to order a takeaway. The phone was not picked up so called in. Was told they had turend it off as they were not a takeaway. Very confused and disappointed. Went a few steps along the road and served a delicious takeaway in 15 minutes.

We are local to Shanghai Restaurant and can honestly say we have not had one bad meal there. We sometimes book a table and we sometimes go spur of the moment for a meal. The food is always freshly cooked and hot and we are welcomed and served warmly and efficiently. Well worth a visit and they also cater for large parties too so check first if you just want a quiet meal.

There were 8 of us for my friends' birthday. Both the food & the service were excellent ... Never ending supply of delicious starters & excellent range of main courses. The staff were friendly, funny & attentive. The only slight niggle was that if you had any room left at all for a desert the only options were vanilla ice cream that wasn't at all special or a greasy looking fritter. Nevertheless, would definitely go again or recommend. Just fill up on the excellent savoury options.

Great food as always, served fresh and great quality! Staff are friendly and your never rushed. We always take my daughter and eat early! Great Chinese food!

If you really enjoy chinese food and hospitality you will find no better than the Shanghai. All food is cooked fresh on ordering whether eating in or taking away. The all you can eat menu is of the same high standard as their regular menu and again only cooked when you order. Very friendly and accommodating. considerate towards vegetarians. Love the food, Love the friendly atmosphere. This place is a gem that you wouldn't expect to find in a small town like Rushden. Standard and quality would have you thinking you were in the Big city. My first and last choice every time for chinese food.

The best chicken satay I've ever tasted! The food is amazing here, and the male members of staff are friendly. There is a female member of staff who is rather rude though.

We wanted a chinese buffet as a reward for some good exam results. Shanghai Restaurant came up on google search, and we hadn't been back for quite a few years. On our entrance, we were greeted by one of the waiters, a very pleasant person, and shown to our table. They operate a new menu now from which you have a set price and have three courses and a dessert, if you can fit it in! The first course was immediately placed in front of us without the need to order anything, as we were a table of five, so they give us a choice of starters. Good start. Choice of soups or duck for second course, duck was nice, hot 'n' sour was spicy, kids were a little disappointed with the chicken in the chicken and noodle soup. Third course, main dishes, full of flavour, nice texture and very nice to eat! Overal, a good experience, one that I am sure we will repeat in the near future. Staff were very friendly and eager to assist with any requests. If you're looking for a new way to have a 'chinese buffet', this restaurant is a definite must try!
