Shanghai Chef in Newport

Second meal in a week and fair play, as full as I am, I want more! Meal arrived nice and hot and everyone really enjoyed it. We look forward to the next. Thank you!

My wife and I moved back to our home city of Newport some nine years ago having spent over 35-years living and working all over London. I have eaten Chinese, Cantonese and Thai food from everywhere. It took us about four years to discover the Shanghai Chef and we never - NEVER - get our Chinese food from anywhere else and we have it delivered because I love a few drinks of an evening and will not drive. The food is ALWAYS delivered on time, it is piping hot and it is unwaveringly delicious. I deliberately over-order, as the following day's nuked leftovers are absolutely amazing. The guy who runs the place is great, always cracking jokes, and I think the important thing to avoid are the 3rd party delivery firms. I recently had a £40 Burger King delivered by one of them (Uber Eats) and the guy just brought us the free nuggets and left the rest of our order behind at the restaurant. He refused point blank to go and get the rest of it and we had to wait days for a refund! That will NEVER happen to me again. Most of these poor reviews relate to these clowns and not the people who make this amazing food. This an important thing to remember. '8pm, cash to my driver' - awesome.

Food didn't turn up despite just eat saying it had been delivered 2 hours ago. Items missing and had to send someone to takeaway as they weren't answering the phone.

Disgusting customer service. . Nearly 3 hours late delivering. So over 4 hours wait in total! Constantly saying food on way. Just Eat App showing delivered in time. They had 30-40 orders when I chased delivery, like I care. So stop taking orders when you can't deliver. No apologies. Awful customer service.

I am a picky eater and at first i was scared to try the salt and pepper chicken here BUT DAM ! its some of the best i have ever had and now i cant stop trying everything else they make ! will always recommend the salt and pepper chicken , honey coated ribs and sale and pepper chips ! My taste buds thank you <3

accommodating to my needs - we had the salt and pepper box and it was delicious, the food in this establishment and the customer service never fails to exceed my expectations. 10/10

Over an hr late, soggy cold and tasteless. Ordered salt and pepper box, everything was soggy due to it being in the box for so long. Chicken balls not crispy at all and filled with raw dough. Won't order again

Curry sauce is awful. Normal crap chips you get everywhere. Everything laden with salt and sugar. You’ll wake up in the night gasping for a drink because of the MSG getting dragged through your kidneys. Avoid.

First of all they only deal in cash , then miss took my order …when I got home I had no rice!!! , phoned them up to arrange delivery of the forgotten item …45 minutes later phoned them back to hear that the rice hadn’t been sent out or cooked…. Will NEVER go there again absolutely rubbish

Worst Chinese I've ever had, crispy shredded chicken was thick, soft and in a thick clear jelly. Chow mein didn't taste of anything

degusting food cold took hour and half to come phoned them up to say it was cold just got the phone put down on me

I ordered fried rice with chicken and pineapple and Singapore chow mein. Food was ready quickly. Taste was brilliant. The best Chinese takeaway I ever had.

We have just eaten a most disappointing meal, delivered from the Shanghai Chef. We had chicken with ginger and spring onions, pork in oyster sauce with a portion of rice. Neither meal had any taste. The food was bland, unappetising and dull. We chose not to finish our meals. It’ll be along time before we order from this place again ….. if ever.

Lamb curry meat was really fatty, Beef curry totally inedible as was ridiculously spicy don't get them that hot in an Indian restaurant Chicken chow mein and salt&pepper chicken ok BEST BIT OF MEAL WAS THE PRAWN CRACKERS. Used to be a cracking meal, don't know what's gone wrong

The best Chinese around the Newport / Cwmbrân area. The food always arrives within the time that is stated when ordering, always piping hot and is delicious every time.

Quick and delicious service. Definitely recommend you order ahead or you may face a small wait, the food is worth it however. A large menu caters to all tastes, additions to personalise your meals are widely available (cashew nuts for example, amazing with noodles) and the staff is happy to recommend items, certainly a bonus. Have had their food many times, and will do so still in the time to come. Recommended!

Always great consistent quality food, a bit pricier than some of the others in the area but definitely worth it. Food is always made quickly and piping hot at collection and the portion sizes are generous!

I wish I could give zero. Food did not arrive so I called the restaurant and they were very rudeand hung up on me. It’s the 6th time ordered to the same delivery address and they just lied about delivery. I will never order from here again

Absolutely disgusting curry sauce was vile chips were rock hard, no taste to anything and was very expensive in comparison to others. Will never order from here again the place should be shut down for good! Delivery was £5 also and I’m local.

Picked up a chicken curry , fried rice and chips last night and I have got to say it was the worst Chinese curry I have ever tasted! Curry was a strange orange colour with chicken that was like rubber , the chips were rock hard and the rice was very sticky! Will never be visiting again!!

Have to say ordered 3 chicken currys with rice and chips and this was by far the worst Chinese we have ever ordered . Chips were like rubber curry was orange and to be honest I'm not sure what the chicken was other than rubber £22 down the drain whole 3 meals in the bin never again

Got the wrong order. Waited so long for the right order my husband had eaten his and my chips were cold. Ruined the evening we had planned. Not the first time they have failed to get the order right.

Sorry to say but the chef should be sent back to shanghai, I have had the mixed box special,again as so enjoyed it ,this one the meat was over cooked and hard ,couldn't even cut it with a steak knife as so hard. Most of this meal ended up in the bin. Get a chef that doesn't over cook the food. One of the most unenjoyable meals I have had

Lovely food try crispy meat rolls, pork Hong Kong style, lush wonton and vegetable soups. Have tried others in the area always a bit disappointing always go to shanghai chef.

The only Chinese I will order from, food is amazing , fast delivery, always recieve it earlier than the delivery times, and food is always piping hot. The only down part is if i order via just eat it comes close to £30 but if I order over the phone it's almost £10 cheaper

Never again over 1hour waiting delivery nobody didn't answer phone

Ordered a Chinese through Just Eat at 6:30pm estimated delivery was 8:40pm, at 9pm status changes to out for delivery !!! By 9pm no sign restaurant contacted and changed delivery to 9:15pm at 10pm still nothing. Phoned the restaurant and when I asked why the food hasn’t arrived and why they had marked it out for delivery when clearly it wasn’t they just said it’s not our problem and we don’t stick to just eat times you’ll get the food when it’s ready - we’re busy. I told them to cancel the order and they refused saying to take it up with just eat- which I did and they were fine cancelled order - half hour after order cancelled the driver turned up and was turned away. It’s such a shame as the food is usually really nice but this is the 2nd time I’ve had food taking over 3 hrs to be delivered and the last time I ever use because they deliver is unreliable and they are clearly manipulating the just eat figures fo appear to be delivering on time when they clearly aren’t.

Ordered at 7.15pm and was delivered at 21.18pm. Long wait but food was hot, and the best I've tasted in a long time, so worth the wait. Fresh and crunchie veggies and bean sprouts in chow mein with big tender pieces of beef. Big prawns and good size pieces of meat in house special fried rice. Better than Sing Lee in Abergavenny and Mr Wongs in Brynmawr. Will order earlier next time. Highly recommended.

Really disappointed. Ordered at 6.30, was told it would be with us at 8. We received the food at 10.05. Was lied to every time we called the shop and food was poor quality.

Use this Chinese regularly and always enjoy the experience. The food is consistently great. Lovely guy who answers the phone. Collect the food as I am not lazy. All the bad reviews seem to be about delivery, why not take the short ride and pick it up yourselves.

Had Chinese meals from quite a few restaurants around Newport, stumbled across shanghai chef middle of last year. The salt and pepper box is fantastic!! And every other meal we've had has been perfect.. Give it a go. You won't go anywhere else

Ordered from here a couple of times, never had a problem. A little bit of wait time but not a problem due to circumstances at the moment. Very polite very helpful and the food is delicious. Definitely be using again.

Whilst being forced to stay in UK by COVID-19 lockdown in Newport Wales for the last 4 months we decided that a Chinese takeaway was required. I can honestly say the Shanghai Chef supplied the best tasting Chinese takeaway we have had with a quantity that ran to snack lunch the following day. The order was for 4 adults and 4 Small children and would have fed 8 adults with 2nds. Well done Shanghai Chef. We will return.

Orders my meal at 7.00pm was told an hour, waited patiently , 2 hours later I try to call the shop on 200 attempts for it to be a busy line constantly. My food actually arrived 9.45pm it was hot but well over cooked I do understand it's been pandemic and these kind of takeaways are very busy, but have decency to be honest about times. Wont order from.here again.

Amazing salt and pepper chicken wings

Ordered food at 7:20 for delivery at 8, changed to 8:30 then changed again to 8:40, contacted restaurant 4 times to be spoken really badly by owner, food arrived at 9:40. Awful service and food was cold chips tasted 2 days old were solid and cold. Never eating here again worst Chinese I’ve ordered from, gave one star because I had to would give nothing

Was told our order would arrive within an hour, after two hours and several phone calls they said they will send the food out again. It finally came over two and a half hours after placing the call!! Really poor service! If they can’t deliver on time then why not just say and I would have ordered from somewhere else?!

Last night we pre ordered a meal for 8pm. The food arrived at 8.45pm, but it was someone else's food. The driver then went back to the house who he delivered our food too and returned it to us at 9pm. In this current climate I'm not too happy with so many different people handling my food. When we opened it up, the chips were stone cold. When we rung up the shop , they were going to cook another meal ,but we would have had to wait another hour. Really disappointed. On my birthday too.

We placed an order at 6PM and was told it would be delivered at 7:15pm. Had a text at 7:13pm saying it was on it's way. At 8:15pm still no sign of delivery so phoned the restaurant and they said it had been sent out as I was on the phone. At 9:15pm still no signs of delivery so phoned the restaurant at 9:30pm and spent around 10mins listening to a employee ringing around all of their drives asking them if they were in my area, and all saying no. Next thing I'm told was it would be 5mins. At 9:45pm I cancelled my order with Just Eat and got a full refund as it was obvious they were happy to take my money but not fulfil the order. Not ordering from here again, very poor service.

Ordered food at 18.54. Order confirmed and was told via text it would be here by 20:50. After a few hundred phone calls to the shop and mostly all besides 4 phone calls actually having a dialling tone we have given up. Apparently they have shut?! Just eat credited £5 but will claim full refund. A couple of very unhappy key workers here. Sons crying cheers Update: 5.5 hours after ordering they called to see if we still wanted it!

Ordered before 7pm and food was supposed to be delivered by 8.10. Then they pushed it to 8.40. After that, they gave up and closed without confirming order wouldn't be delivered. Ended up managing to cancel at 9.45.

What a awful service. My daughter placed an order and was told they would deliver by 20:45 and almost an hour later still no food. Problem is they’ve obviously taken their phone off the hook so we couldn’t even contact them ....DO NOT USE !!!!!!

After 60 mins we rang to chase and was told it was sent after another 40 mins rang again and was told it was sent but was told 40 mins ago it was sent. Then to have attitude down the phone and bad customer service you would think they would look after regular customers!!!!

We often buy a meal from here but out of last three meals only one edible. Tonight we ordered shredded crspy beef, singapore noodles, Hong kong style chicken sweet and sour, egg frief rice , chicken balls..fpr example the meat in the noodles looked awful .nothing tasted right and the ctispy beef was not cispy and it was tough...will not be going back it is as though there are different chefs one who can cook a great meal and another one who dont know what they ate doing..very hit and miss to get a descent meal recently. I have gien 3 rating as i have had good meals on the past ..

We ordered a home takeaway on New Years Eve. It was delivered on time and everything we'd ordered was fine. We thought the lamb shredded (as in duck) did not work. Otherwise the special fried rice was very good as were the other dishes. we will use this service again but i will avoid the shredded lamb

We visited in person at around 8pm and ordered Chicken Chow mein and sweet and sour chicken. The food was cooked quickly and tasted excellent. Service was friendly, with plenty of reading material to keep the short wait even shorter. Will definitely go again.

Forget about just eat, nearly £2 difference on each dish price. Nice service and excellent and abundant food.

I may not be chinese, or even an expert on their food...but i do know that the Salt and Pepper box from here is GOOOOOD...Take it from a fat man!
