I have been a customer at Shampers since approx 1978/9 when Don Hewitson was the owner and Simon the manager Have not been there for 2+ years because of the pandemic. From working in London but now retired to South Devon, I was planning to visit and catch up with Simon & Roff in the next two weeks One of the few independent quality wine bars is lost. I have been here with family, for business and with friends Devastated

The end of a golden era. Quite the best wine bar in London as far as I am concerned. Wonderful ambience, sensible and very well prepared food and great wines. When Madeira was added to the wine list then 10/10 I don’t know why it closed. Presumably Simon felt like permanently retiring to Cornwall. My only complaint! If there was a closing down ceremony ( or similar) I didn’t know about it!

Turned up to enjoy good fayre and ambience but sadly it’s closed down, what a bl@@dy shame that one of the last independent wine bars that differentiated itself from the herd is no more. I feel for the team who gave so much to keep it going but were thwarted by this whole Covid situation. Thank you for for good times. Bryan

Dashed here thinking Shampers was the same old, lively Italian it once was - but it isn’t - it’s changed hands and there was very little Italian food on the menu. The girls serving were sweet and obliging. The food was okay. No atmosphere at all - though I’m sure it would liven up later. I wish them well post Covid but it’s not what I expected (the website photos are old ones!).

Since about 1978, Shampers has been my first choice go-to venue in London. In all that time, whether in large gatherings in excess of 25/30 or intimate sojourns of 2, Shampers has never failed to please. The present, post Covid itteration of Shampers fully lived up to expectations for the small party of 7, gathered for lunch, to celebrate our 25th Wedding Anniversary. The copious bubbly, wines, new à la carte starters & mains, desserts and attentive service, all amounted to 5 hours of sheer, unforgetable bliss. Other than to thank the Maitre and team, if I were to write any more, it would appear fawning.

I’ve been coming here for years so thought it about time I wrote a review as once again this hidden gem in the middle of the hustle and bustle of central London, gave us another brilliant evening yesterday. Whenever I’m in town I will always make a beeline for drinks and snacks here. It’s never let us down and always accommodates us no matter how busy. It’s a place that lets you escape the hectic chaos of Soho with a bottle or two of wine. Long live Shampers.

My friend and I stumbled upon this little gem on Tuesday. The laminated handwritten menu offered a good choice of dishes. So impressed when waiter informed us of some extra dishes available on the day.I had organic salmon and my friend chose duck confit. Both delicious and generous portions by London standards. There were about five occupied tables which is adequate from a safety point of view. Bottle of prossecco was high quality. Will definitely return staff were efficient and friendly.

Brought an Australian friend to shampers. Loved it. I can honestly say their Oysters are some of the best in London and their sirloin steak is better than you would get at a top steak house for twice the price. A true London great, Soho's finest. Great wine list and well priced. My friend said they could double the prices !!!

One of the worst, if not the worst, dinning experience I have ever had, and I am not too fussy! We went for dinner and found the services was really low standard. We had squid as starter which was tasteless and of very poor quality. I had seabass which I can only say I cook it better as it was served pink. The one thing that saved it was the steak my partner ordered. £90 total bill. Money really wasted. We won't be back.

Based on our last good experience eating at Shampers we decided to have dinner here. Our starter of fresh squid was terrible and served at the same time as our main courses. Talking of service, it has gone downhill since last time we visited this place. Mostly inexperienced and untrained staff. The steak I had was ok but my partner’s fish was not cooked sufficiently. All in all a terrible experience. We won’t be back.

Shampers has been going since 1977 and that's testimony to its success. It's friendly, almost always available (if you can't book a table, have seat at the bar), food is nicely prepped, wines are kept nicely and you can order a lot of them by the glass. Above all, it's good value, which keeps people coming back. I had marinated herrings and a steak sandwich and chips for not too much more than twenty quid which for London isn't bad. Don't worry that you feel like you're invading someone else's party. Every one feels like that. It's informal and the staff are efficient - just what you need if you're on the way to a show, or you've just finished work, which many of the customers have. If it's your first time here, you'll find a reason of an occasion to come back.

It was a little after 10pm when the four of us popped in for a post supper "last one". On first impressions Shampers was more or less what we were looking for - quirky, atmospheric and without manic music. We watched what appeared to be the owner/gaffer wander up and down the bar casting a professional eye over his domain perhaps making sure all was in order, everything ticking along nicely. Every now and again a waitress/ barperson would appear then disappear. They chatted. We waited. Invisible. The four of us sitting at the bar without a drink. Eventually, the owner/gaffer decided that we had passed the waiting test and called to a passing/wandering bar lady that we should be served. We were served without grace or humour, finally reduced to fits of muffled giggles by her attitude which did little to raise her weary spirits.

Personale cortese e servizio veloce. Prezzi nella media. Consigliato per un piacevole aperitivo in centro.

Got charmed by the look of the place which resembles a quaint little french bistro. Thats how they draw you in...clever. Theres a downstairs and the dated decor is a mix of fairly macabre art and very cheap decorations making it less visually appealing as upstairs and more akin to a bar in a dodgy third world town (and ive spent a fair bit of time in dodgy third world establishments). The bread was good so i was hopeful. Appetizers came suspiciously fast..fried calamari which was rubbery. My main reminded me of hospital cafeteria food except with garnish and at 10 times the price. My wifes fish was somewhat better and dessert was ok at best. Oh and the Waiters always looked confused. All in all..plenty of good places close by..wont be going back.

They have oysters! And an amazing selection of wine (which is very reasonably priced)! And, surprisingly, always space for a small company! And it is right in the centre of London. A hidden gem.

A superb little bistro offering excellent wines, at reasonable prices. The food is fresh, tasty, and imaginatively presented. The service is responsive, friendly, yet unobtrusive. The atmosphere is convivial, with a buzz of good-natured discussions and lively conversations

I gave Shampers a call to ask whether it would be possible to book a table for 8 - drinkers rather than eaters - on a Friday evening at 1830. I was expecting a resounding NO! Thankfully the answer was 'yes' and a great meeting place it proved to be. The list is well chosen and reasonably priced and we will certainly visit again. They have made new friends in this household by their flexibility and friendliness.

Sat in the window for lunch on a Wednesday. Loads of choice on the menu... the calamari is some of the best I have ever had. My colleague picked the Skate which he liked but considering he had a hangover he maybe should have chosen something less tricky to eat. I had the kidneys on mash, really nice and just what I wanted on a cold London day. Was there for nearly 6 hours but never felt we overstayed our welcome, but they were probably glad to see us go when the evening customers started to arrive. Wine was excellent and good value, also the port to go with the cheese board was perfect and a nice large glass. The owner/manager was such a nice fella, full of stories and happy to advise what to choose and was very attentive. His younger staff maybe not as good but that he does have nearly 3 decades more experience than them. I will be back, hopefully with my wife when up in the big city again for a show or shopping.

Popped in here with 2 hours before a show with my mum on her 79th Birthday. Had wandered round environs rejecting all other restaurants for one reason or another... saw traditional meat dishes on menu and thought let’s give it a go!I’m glad we did! Had a glass of wine from the extensive list. Decided to choose based on the descriptions of the wines as a guide on how we’d like to feel - so the pouilly fumme got it!!Walls covers with art to view or purchase, rest of walls covered with wine bottles. Lovely slightly faded ambience - a little shabby but a nice change from the Corp. chains. Toilets down in dingy cellar and very 1980’s!! But pretty fleur des lys toilet paper no less ⚜️This is the kind of place I’d like to hole up in our if the rain and lose myself either with good company/good book and good wine.Food was very nice too!

Went for a meal after seeing a cabaret act. The staff were friendly and the service was good. Excellent selection of wine. The food was very disappointing. I had venison steak and mashed potatoes and it tasted as though it had come out of the freezer and been put into the microwave. Two mains and a bottle of wine came to £54.45 including service. So not cheap for a very mediocre meal. Wouldn’t rush back.

Shampers is my favourite wine bar. Excellent food and wines and the friendliest of atmospheres. Extremely well run and it is always like visiting old friends. It is also one of the very few places where you can't get a decent glass of Madeira. A favourite for close on 25 years and will remain so.

Time leaves without us whether our bags are packed or not .We move forward never going back .Wine however enables us to travel back to times gone by ...it enables us to take a step back from where we are and live momentarily in the past ... this is why I love wine and so it is only natural that I fell in love with 'shampers' As soon as I walked through the doors memories of my skiing trips in Europe came rushing back ! The whole place just seems completely untouched by time as if it is frozen in one moment if only to allow us to dip in and out as we continue our busy hustle and bustle.I recommend this place to anyone with a passion for wine but even more for those who fight to keep wine relevant !

I fell in love with this place, bustling, full of character with a proper landlord behind the bar! English to the core selling a fabulous array of wines from all over the world at really good prices which amounts to impressive value for money! The staff are amazing and clearly loyal to Simon the obvious man in charge! The food is excellent from menu choice to mouth! My veal steak with mushroom sauce, green beans and new potatoes was outstanding' brilliant, brilliant brilliant!!!!

I was apprehensive when I first saw the restaurant front ...but was surprised to see lots of tables filled up with guests enjoying themselves . We were a group Of 25 plus and went down into the basement . Tables were placed close to each other but that was the only hiccup . Staff were friendly service was good . Good choice of Starters were made available for a fixed menu. Main courses were ok . I took the venison well done and the portion was a tad small ...tasted nice though . Well worth a repeat visit .

Went to tea at the Ritz and was not impressed. The scones were not good and not really scones. Ch and F&M offer better tea experience. Table setting and chairs were very cramped. Service was just ok.

Pret is always my go-to for semi-healthy and fresh lunch on the go when I am in the city. Their coffee is good, and I love their hot meatball wrap.
