Had dinner here on Easter after looking for a well-recommended place nearby. The restaurant was not very busy, and the servers were prompt to take our orders and check in on us. The food was very good and although we stayed past closing, we were not rushed to leave. We shared a lot of food for a reasonable price. I would certainly recommend for anyone looking for a good meal and decent prices.

Freezer surprise, they need 90 to serve deep fried frozen food and dirty water as a curry. Avoidable

Surprisingly good authentic Indian restaurants in the heart of the old city. Staff made some excellent suggestions and everything from the lamb curry to the garlic naan was quite tasty.

Great location, hidden gem. Brilliant choice of menu. I had Thai food while my husband had Indian and we both really enjoyed it. Good service, the staff were attentive. Value for money as Edinburgh can be a tad expensive. We would definitely recommend.

My family went for the Indian food, it was AWFUL! The naan breads tasted and looked like they were from a cheap supermarket brand. Inedible. Curry was full of oil, paneer was dry and microwaved. Portions of rice were tiny. Worst part was the service charge added for a table of 4 when service was poor!! Please beware and go for authentic food elsewhere, this really ruined our trip.

I dined at Shamoli Thai and Indian Restaurant on 11/3/2023, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. The Thai curry dish and biryani I ordered both had an unusual taste and smell, which was quite off-putting. The biryani, in particular, resembled khichri rather than the flavorful dish I was expecting. To make matters worse, the owner's demeanor was rather disappointing. They seemed uninterested in providing recommendations when asked and were not responsive to clear communication. This lack of attentiveness greatly affected the overall experience. I sincerely hope that Shamoli takes steps to improve the food quality and customer service, as there is potential for this restaurant to offer a much better dining experience. While I have no plans of returning in the future, I do hope this review brings about positive changes.

Right off the street, open late, great service, the food was very good, lavatories are clean, nice atmosphere.

Extremely poor! The food is not at all authentic. The main Indian dishes were full of oil, way more than average and had split from the sauce. The sauces did not taste homemade and were way too salty. The pilau rice was not traditional pilau at all, only coloured dark yellow with too much turmeric, no other spices added. The naan breads were ridiculous, they were not homemade or authentic. Tasted bought in and were extremely dry and poor tasting. The worst part was being charged an additional 10% on top of the bill for a service charge for 2 adults and 2 children who shared dishes. I could not recommend this restaurant, customers should be treated better we are not fools and don’t return. Avoid.

We had a delicious dinner here our first night in Edinburgh . The restaurant was welcoming and cozy. Friendly service - we were all happy with our meals. Happily recommend !

This was booked for a birthday meal out for a friend. I was a bit worried based on some of the negative reviews but everything about the experience was positive, don't let them put you off. I thought the food was excellent and everybody else seemed to agree. Staff were brilliant, drinks etc came out quick and didn't have to wait around to get a second one ordered. Would recommend and will be back.

Good day, I was eating here in the evening at the usual meal time and when I entered the restaurant and realized that I was the only guest in the entire restaurant, the alarm bells should have rung for me at the latest. I then ordered butter chicken with rice. Food itself came relatively quickly. It tasted average, nothing special. But the amount of food... Ladies and gentlemen, I'm telling you, it's an outrage. The amount of rice grains could be counted by hand and there were only a few pieces of chicken. But when the bill came I was blown away. £20. £20 how the hell is that price made up? The butter chicken cost £13 and the rice cost £3. How do you get to £20? Didn't these gentlemen take mathematics lessons? Of course I asked for the invoice. However, it only said a total of £20. However, how these are made up is kept secret. The first time in my life that I walked out of a restaurant hungry and embarrassed. An unbelievable, bottomless impudence that is second to none!

My recent visit to Scotland made me try this gem..there Thai dish is bomb .pad Thai to Thai chicken green curry .very authentic flavour journey . would love to dine in with them.even small thingsike coconut milk rice ..its just Scotland way of saying i love you ..come back again.

The place is magnificent, well located, quiet. The servers are very friendly. The service is fast. Excellent food, there is something for everyone. Having Thai and Indian allows you to eat with variety.

The food we had for Christmas dinner was terrible. We ordered the grill platter and were disappointed with the quality of the kebabs. They were not fresh and had been reheated in the microwave, making the meat hard and difficult to chew. The noodles we ordered were overcooked and tasted terrible. We also ordered Thai prawns, which were too salty for our liking. We were very upset that our Christmas dinner was ruined by the poor quality of the food. We believe that the restaurant should improve the quality of their dishes, especially considering the prices they charge.

Not good at all and tricksters. We only received the expensive festive menu, not the menu posted outside. It took 2 hours for 2 courses. During this time, I realized many other tables and all the Indian customers received and could order from the regular menu. When I asked, he said 'oh, really? you should have gotten both menus.' But it was too late for us to change. We paid ~24£ each for greasy fried appetizers and watery curry. Everything was too sweet. Avoid.

Lovely food service is great only scored low on atmosphere as we were the only ones in there which I don't min really as I can enjoy my food with my family in peace and quiet

If you go to this restaurant do so at your own peril. No one here cares what you order and what is served to you. My wife is a pure vegetarian as per her religious beliefs , jainism. We ordered vegetarian Tom Kah soup and instead were served Chicken soup, when we called them over to tell them true huge mistake they were not even apologetic about it. They were trying to pass the blame between the one who took the order and the cook. After discussions it was replaced with vegetarian soup. Also ordered chicken Bhuna which was tasteless. And the chicken was not even properly cooked. The keema nan was for name sake as it didn’t have keema in it and was uncooked. There was no point discussing anything with the staff there so we quietly ate paid and left. Moreover tourist don’t have a say anyway. But I would once again caution you on eating there, di so on your own peril. Oh just to mention in the end that I spite of the major mistake they committed of serving chicken instead of vegetarian they invoiced us for chicken and we had to pay

We had tom yum the other day and it was amazing. The sourness and spiciness are at the perfect balance. The duck was tender as well!

Came here with some friends on a Sunday night it was quite don’t understand why because this place is fantastic pad Thai was delicious my friends had Indian said it was great. The staff are great super friendly had a nice conversation with one of them.

My visit to Shamoli in Edinburgh left me thoroughly disappointed. As a food enthusiast with a penchant for Indian and Thai cuisine, I had high hopes for this restaurant, but sadly, it fell short in many ways. Firstly, the food was a letdown. The Indian and Thai dishes lacked the authentic flavors and quality I expected. The curries were overly greasy, and the spices seemed off-balance. It was far from the delicious experience I've had at other restaurants. Service was another issue. The staff appeared disinterested and inattentive. We had to wait quite a while for our orders to be taken, and it took even longer for the food to arrive. The ambiance was also subpar. The restaurant felt cramped, and the lighting was dim, making it hard to enjoy the meal. The noise level was surprisingly high, and it didn't contribute to a pleasant dining atmosphere. Shamoli was a letdown, especially for someone who appreciates good Indian and Thai food.

Highly recommend! Will definitely revisit next time in Edinburgh. Best ever peshwari naan bread. I would go there just for that. I had to ask for the ingredients as super tasty. There is an extra one, but you can find out when you visit 😉. Forgot to take photos but this was the delicious Merlot wine we had with a very garlicky lamb dish to fight off a cold, which worked. A really good find...

Rainy evening and we were hungry and tired, found this place by luck and wow were we in for a treat. Best Butter chicken we ever had and the lemon rice fit perfectly with it. The service was warm and welcoming. If I ever visit Edinburgh again this will be one of the places I will go to.

I placed an order to pick up so I could dine in my hotel room. The Jalfrezi - Medium Hot was recommended in Uber Eats. My order was ready quickly and it was hot. The staff was very friendly when I entered the restaurant. If you love hot and savory, this is your dish. I haven’t had an Indian dish this delicious in years. I also ordered the garlic naan to dip in my dish. The naan was soft with a good flavor of garlic without it being too much. When I return to Edinburgh, I’ll definitely order that dish again and dine in for the experience.

I've visited a couple of times, always with large parties and always late in the evening. Despite these challenges, Shamoli has always delivered a decent meal in good time. I have tried both the Indian and the Thai menus and been satisfied with both.

We saw the signage saying “Thai & Indian Restaurant”. We ordered Pad Thai but it didn’t look or taste like pad thai at all. It looked like indian cooking style of pad thai.

Very poor service with serving guy not knowing meaning of name of restaurant. The fried rice also came without green spring onion though it’s listed in description , pad Thai was good, rotis and spinach also good - but service attitude of working staff was not so interested. Excuses given for dish not made properly on supplies , whereas same dish in others tables has the item. quantity size of dish was good

Good food let down by charge of £2.95 for a dash of lemonade in orange juice, £5.90 in total and also the smallest beer ever!

So thankful to find this place after the rest of the Royal Mile shut down. The food was amazing, the service was quick and they were very helpful for us to order a 2nd round of food as take away for teens. Would absolutely recommend, and they're hours are so hepful!

Walking along the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, you notice a wing of open doors leading to the first floor of a house on the High Street. You are warmly greeted by a calm and smiling man who, as it soon turns out, comes from Bangladesh. You start a conversation with him, just casually order, the moment is perfect. As well as a brought lunch with a varied palette of tastes prepared from quality and fresh ingredients. During lunch time, a mysterious gentleman walks by, radiating skill and wisdom. It was to be expected in this magical place - he is a cook. This place offers a very high quality and authentic product, it offers a rare chance when traveling through Edinburgh.

Food taste was average, quantity less. If you are planning to visit need to consider below points. Planning for lunch go after 2:45pm ( i tried at 2 and 2:15 they are not ready to serve) If your takeaway bill less than 10£ carry cash, min card payment 10£. Order main course first, otherwise they wont take the order. I requested twice first serve what we order then will order main course, answer was no. I took some basic items as take-way and had main course in another restaurant.

Too low on quantity compared to the price they charge...and on the top of it they charge 10% service charge. No other restuarant charges service charge. Will not recommend this restuarant at all. Please look for other options. After spending £24... i am still hungry...

Ate here on our first evening in Edinburgh. After a very long day of travel, we were late heading out for dinner and most places had stopped serving food. When we walked into this restaurant, it was clear they were getting ready to close, but they took pity on us and sat us for dinner anyway: we were the only 2 people in the entire place. My friend ordered the chicken biryani and I got the butter chicken. Both dishes were flavorful and cooked perfectly. They were the perfect place to start our Edinburgh vacation!

Very good Asian food Thai Indian Chinese a typical Indian style touch given to almost food with a round balanced taste , Naan is something once should not miss as they are soft and fluffy simply loved the food and the efficiency of their service.

Food was below average. They were slow and not very friendly. Additionally I was brought food to the table that I did not order and was then charged for. You can eat out other places in Edinburgh and pay a lot less. Also, my hostel had a list of places that gave a discount and this place was on it, but they did not honor this discount. Do not recommend.

Sat down for dinner at 8:15pm yesterday. The food was delicious, especially the naan and chana masala.

Best Thai food I have ever eaten. Amazing service. Location is perfect but you might walk right by it since it is on the 2nd floor! Don’t miss this hidden gem! Panang curry was great. But the Shamoli duck appetizer is a must have and the chicken tikka Massallam was divine…fun sizzling dish for atmosphere but the flavors are even better.

A nice break from the pub fare. Great flavors in the food. We are not fans of super hot curry or Thai food and there were plenty of options for our palate. Great service and a nice ethnic soundtrack.

I really liked the poppadom starter with the different sauces. At some point you can only have so much fish and chips. Indian food is a favorite shared with my wife. It was a lovely break from the other English and Scottish fair we've had on this trip.

Our server Miah was very courteous and kind. Our meal was amazing and he shared tips on how best to see the tourist spots. The meal was perfectly spiced and not too hot spicewise. I had the Kathmandu chicken tikka and my husband had the tikka masala (his favorite back home). Recommended!

Yes it is great it is a nice little Indian .I brought friends to it few weeks ago and they raved about it so it is worth a visit .The only thing I would say needs to make that stairs safer they are a bit steep needs better hand rails.But will be back again.The two male waiters are the best always look after me when I even come in for a carryout they have a nice red wine poured for me its a joy to go in.The young indian waitress needs to smile a little bit she goes about though she hated the world at one time looked at her watch to see if it was closeing time but apart from her everything is good.

Tried to find a restaurant for a dinner on Saturday night, this place was almost empty. I wonder why, because the food was excellent! We had a Pad Thai and Red Curry, which was really hot (in a good way if you like spice food). The staff is very friendly ❤️

Go here and get Red Curry if you like SPICY. Great place, not crowded on a Saturday, and properly legit spicy food.

Lovely atmosphere and lovely staff. The first meal I ate there was the nicest Thai meal I had in a very long time. They made me a special request that I wanted which wasn’t on the menu and recommended a sauce which was delicious. The heat was intense and so were the flavours. Lovely herbs and spices. The portion was large and I was very happy. Thank you kindly.

Delightful flavors and relaxing atmosphere. We are visiting Edinburgh for the first time and were lucky enough to be staying right by this restaurant. If you are looking for a Thai and/or Indian option in the area, I would highly recommend it.

We arrived late at Edinburgh (at around 21:00) and most restaurants are closed except some bars, as we don't take alcohol we chose this Thai / Indian food restaurant. The portion of plate is small but the taste is ok. For the whole restaurant, we are the only customers so the atmosphere is cold. However, the server took good care of us and left us a good impression. He said their business dropped a lot after Covid.

Altogether a great restaurant, would rate 4.5 if I could. The menu, although it had Thai items, was more Indian Food focused. The Garlic Naan was amazing, and so was the Butter Chicken. The lamb samosas were very bland, and I would not get them again, but would try their normal vegetarian ones. The Fried Rice was lacking, and wasn’t even on the menu, but they were happy to whip it up for us.

I come here everytime I visit Edinburgh. Really great Indian dishes and at an affordable price!

We liked everything here including Taste, price, staff behaviour. We ordered paneer karahi, dal tadka, mushroom masala, Tandoori roti and Garlic naan. Every item is recommandalble.

We had a wonderful dinner at a window looking out over the Royal Mile. The tandoori was excellent with rice cooked to perfection. Lovely spot for a quiet romantic meal.

Third time we have visited the restaurant and it never disappoints.Staff are pleasant and helpful. It is a little gem, hidden away on the Royal Mile.Relaxed atmosphere and within easy walking distance to theatres. Food is well presented and tasty.
