The service was fantastic, but the Thai food isn't even close to real Thai food. It was super greasy and didn't look, feel or taste like Thai food. The Indian menu may be a lot better, but the chef needs a lot more experience and practice to make decent Thai food.

We had a beautiful meal here on Tuesday night. Chicken madras and chicken balti were both absolutely fantastic. Chicken just melted in your mouth. Bombay aloo was very tasty and potatoes cooked to perfection. Garlic naan bread was light and flavoursome, not stodgy and doughy like we've had at other places. Service was also top notch too. Would definitely return if visiting Edinburgh again.

Fast and friendly service, we were seated quickly and getting quick refills on tap water was no problem at all. The food was delicious! We ordered cheese naan, tikka masala, and madras chicken. All nicely flavored and the madras chicken had a nice amount of spice to it. The restaurant itself was clean and nicely decorated. We had a nice view of the royal mile from where we sat.

The restaurant was very good. It’s a combo of Thai and Indian Cuisines. We ordered the Tom Yum Soup with King Prawns. This dish was fantastic - a little spicy but very delicious. Then for main entree we ordered the Shamoli Special Biryani which consists of chicken, lamb, and prawn. We also ordered Tandoori Murgh (Tandoori Chicken). The Biryani was a bit oily and had lots of curry powder, which was a bit much but still the Biryani was not too bad. The Tandoori Chicken was fabulous.

The dishes were quite good, with authentic flavors, but the disappointment came from the dessert. The cheesecake was dry and tasteless, it looked like cardboard. Also, the portions of the main dishes were a bit tight. Finally, the staff was not in traditional attire, which took away some of the charm from the experience. Too bad, because the potential is there!

We arrived into Edinburgh later than expected due to a flight delay. After hastily checking into our hotel the six of us were starving. We were practically running through the streets in search of a restaurant when... lo and behold.. literally like a beacon in the night we ascended a flight of stairs into this delightfully cozy and cheery eatery. When we asked the pleasant host, "can we still get a table"? He responded, "Absolutely"!! I know it was late (around 10 pm) and they were looking to call it a night but they served us beer, wine, and the most delicious Thai food. They cold not have been nicer and more welcoming. Atmosphere is fantastic, food is great and reasonable. Highly recommend!

US visitor perspective. Looking for dinner past 930pm after a Fringe event. Saw this place and was feeling kinda desperate thinking we had slim pickings this late at night. Service was ok since there were only 3 other tables occupied. Food was disappointing- my pad Thai was basically chop suey. The noodles weren’t even rice noodles. Unacceptable since you can easily look up a pad Thai recipe and I’m sure rice noodles aren’t scarce. Served with sweet chili sauce and Parmesan cheese for the salad. Skip this place unless you are really desperate.

We visited this place, because we were really hungry. However, after visit I would have rather prefered to stay hungry. The lamb kebab, which I ordered was badly cook, the meat was not tender at all, but even worse was a waiter. I was quite cold and asked if the window could be closed, but the waiter said no. Also I wanted to order an extra butter, which was not possible without any explanation either. While we were eating, he came to show to my husband how he should properly eat Indian food touching his cutlery and plates, which was not his business at all. Cherry on the top was that he charged 10 % service fee without even telling us, which has not happened to us in any other place in Edinburgh. Please do not visit this place, rather choose some nice British restaurant where they will treat you well.

Just No! This isn't even close to an authentic Thai food experience. The Indian is just about average. The chef is Bangladeshi, so even though not authentic, it is at least in the ballpark. But whoever is claiming to cook Thai food in the kitchen, should be fired! Definitely THE WORST Thai food we have had. EVER! I dined at Shamoli Thai and Indian Restaurant on 11/3/2023, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. The Thai curry dish and biryani I ordered both had an unusual taste and smell, which was quite off-putting. The biryani, in particular, resembled khichri rather than the flavorful dish I was expecting. To make matters worse, the owner's demeanor was rather disappointing. They seemed uninterested in providing recommendations when asked and were not responsive to clear communication. This lack of attentiveness greatly affected the overall experience. I sincerely hope that Shamoli takes steps to improve the food quality and customer service, as there is potential for this restaurant to offer a much better dining experience. While I have no plans of returning in the future, I do hope this review brings about positive changes.

Extremely poor! The food is not at all authentic. The main Indian dishes were full of oil, way more than average and had split from the sauce. The sauces did not taste homemade and were way too salty. The pilau rice was not traditional pilau at all, only coloured dark yellow with too much turmeric, no other spices added. The naan breads were ridiculous, they were not homemade or authentic. Tasted bought in and were extremely dry and poor tasting. The worst part was being charged an additional 10% on top of the bill for a service charge for 2 adults and 2 children who shared dishes. I could not recommend this restaurant, customers should be treated better we are not fools and don’t return. Avoid.

Good day, I was eating here in the evening at the usual meal time and when I entered the restaurant and realized that I was the only guest in the entire restaurant, the alarm bells should have rung for me at the latest. I then ordered butter chicken with rice. Food itself came relatively quickly. It tasted average, nothing special. But the amount of food... Ladies and gentlemen, I'm telling you, it's an outrage. The amount of rice grains could be counted by hand and there were only a few pieces of chicken. But when the bill came I was blown away. £20. £20 how the hell is that price made up? The butter chicken cost £13 and the rice cost £3. How do you get to £20? Didn't these gentlemen take mathematics lessons? Of course I asked for the invoice. However, it only said a total of £20. However, how these are made up is kept secret. The first time in my life that I walked out of a restaurant hungry and embarrassed. An unbelievable, bottomless impudence that is second to none!

If you go to this restaurant do so at your own peril. No one here cares what you order and what is served to you. My wife is a pure vegetarian as per her religious beliefs , jainism. We ordered vegetarian Tom Kah soup and instead were served Chicken soup, when we called them over to tell them true huge mistake they were not even apologetic about it. They were trying to pass the blame between the one who took the order and the cook. After discussions it was replaced with vegetarian soup. Also ordered chicken Bhuna which was tasteless. And the chicken was not even properly cooked. The keema nan was for name sake as it didn’t have keema in it and was uncooked. There was no point discussing anything with the staff there so we quietly ate paid and left. Moreover tourist don’t have a say anyway. But I would once again caution you on eating there, di so on your own peril. Oh just to mention in the end that I spite of the major mistake they committed of serving chicken instead of vegetarian they invoiced us for chicken and we had to pay

My visit to Shamoli in Edinburgh left me thoroughly disappointed. As a food enthusiast with a penchant for Indian and Thai cuisine, I had high hopes for this restaurant, but sadly, it fell short in many ways. Firstly, the food was a letdown. The Indian and Thai dishes lacked the authentic flavors and quality I expected. The curries were overly greasy, and the spices seemed off-balance. It was far from the delicious experience I've had at other restaurants. Service was another issue. The staff appeared disinterested and inattentive. We had to wait quite a while for our orders to be taken, and it took even longer for the food to arrive. The ambiance was also subpar. The restaurant felt cramped, and the lighting was dim, making it hard to enjoy the meal. The noise level was surprisingly high, and it didn't contribute to a pleasant dining atmosphere. Shamoli was a letdown, especially for someone who appreciates good Indian and Thai food.
