Totally appalling Indian food....ZERO STARS This dive comes second only to that odious excuse of an eaterie the DREADFUL Dar's of Hampstead, with this dive being a fraction less worse. Who do these people think they are? They think they are actually going to get away with serving this vile muck when we know what basic good indian food is??!! Although they are no Amaya, Quilon or Chutney Mary, how do they think they can get away serving that utter trash as Indian food???!!! The meat quality again like Dar's is fit only for pet food, tiny portions with giant salads on every plate, chicken tikka that tastes of bad fish as they can't be bothered to use a different grill for goodness sake imagine if you hate fish and all served with cheap bottled sauces masquerading as chutneys with God knows how many E numbers abd bad ingredients! I don't give a darn how long you've been in business these charlatans are trading on their history and they need new cooks...again probably using cooks that have given up on cooking and life in general it appears. DO NOT EAT HERE....DEARDFUL AWFUL EXCUSE FOR INDIAN FOOD

Very small restaurant in hampstead can I just say the food was spot on by far the best butter chicken I've had anywhere and I travel alot for food Service was impeccable from numan very soft spoken attended to every need and could not have asked for a better server.

Really disappointing service. All servers this evening were brusque, hostile and one even referred to me as 'she' as I was sat there. They also pointed towards the service charge several times which made it even worse. Not sure what's happened here but it wasn't good.

The BEST restaurant in all of London. We moved to London for the year and stumbled upon this gem on the great Hampstead High Street. Shahbhag is the best in every way. The service is impeccable, they all treat you with respect, bring food promptly, and even remembered our order after coming so many times! The dinning room is clean, with great decoration and music. The food itself is the best Indian Food we’ve ever had. Start with the Papadums, accompanied by lovely chutney. After that, try a Mango Lassi to drink. For the main, we recommend Paneer Tikka Masala, Sag Paneer, and a side of Aloo Gobi. A perfect blend of sweet coconut, rich flavours, and good spices. (Friends rave about the meat options too!) Finish this off with the best Peshwari Naan and pilau rice. We’re dreaming of the day they open a location in the USA!

One of the best Indian food I have had. Prices are very good. Polite staff. Ignore any comments about that. Some people are older and they don’t even charge for service. Their curry was one of the best I have ever had. And again, prices - especially for Hampstead - are very good.

Excellent food, atmosphere and service. Busy as expected on a Saturday night but service was efficient and friendly. My veggie Dhansak was as I liked and there is the usual range of Indian/Bangladeshi style cuisine you’d expect from a British curry house. Close to Hampstead tube or downhill to Belsize Park, recommended.

Food ok but not as it used to be. Starters popadoms were fine but mango chutney tasteless and too sweet, minty yogurt tasteless and runny. Mains were tasty, tarka dall on runny side. Service not great. Old man - waiter didn't communicate, he took my husband's side plate away without asking, threw a teaspoon into chutney dishs?? Very strange behavior as if he was too tired to be there...

Wonderful restaurant. My husband and I popped in for dinner and we loved it so much we brought our children back for my birthday dinner the following evening. Friendly welcome, professional service, varied menu, very very high quality food which isn't at all greasy, and reasonable prices. We will return next time we are in the area.

Shahbag Tandoori is the BEST local "Ruby Murray" (Curry) in London and is a real "Hidden Gem" in the heart of leafy Hampstead. Really authentic décor with beautiful painted murals, incredibly friendly and attentive service combined with mouthwateringly delicious food - I can highly recommend the Mixed sizzling Tandoori, juicy king prawn shashlik and their stunning Sag Paneer spinach & cheese). Perfect for a romantic date or a relaxed and fun Indian feast with friends and family - absolutely superb and tremendously good value given the high quality of food and service. Already looking forward to coming back very soon, thank you so much for an absolutely amazing evening. 10/10 Highly recommended

Really good food and good service. The menu had a variety of spicy foods and it reflects the reality of how spicy the dishes are.

I come here about every two to three months with about eight friends. The food is mostly quite good. The service sometimes seems a bit rushed but is generally quite good. The younger waiter we had seemed a bit better than some older ones we have had in the past.

I live in Essex but I always come here when I fancy a curry. I’ve been to many curry houses in my time, but I can honestly say that this is the best one I’ve ever been to! I couldn’t recommend it any higher. Kind staff and fantastic food. Truly a great dining experience and worth every penny.

A perfect introduction to Indian food! I’m from the SW coast of Florida with a very small Indian population. I was determined while I was in Hampstead to learn more. I was candid with the young man who served me and he made recommendations that were lovely. I am hooked. Fantastic experience all the way around. It’s easy to see why this lovely restaurant has been here since the 1950s. An attention to detail makes this place welcoming and elegant at the same time. I will definitely be back.

I really enjoyed my first experience here. I’m new to Indian cuisine and the young man serving me was so helpful. Everything was so delicious, the welcome was warm and I’ll be back. Just lovely!

It's a pleasant enough place, but but the food was mediocre and somewhat bland. And I don't need to be waited on hand and foot, but it felt like our server was actually annoyed by our presence, even though we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time.

Food good, tastey, consistant quality. Popular with locals in Hampstead. Although they don't keep bottled Kingfisher Larger Beer, only on-tap.

The Decently priced menu reads like a Chinese takeout-elaborate and repetitive. The food was mediocre at best, but I saw plenty of non-Indian foodies chowing down on their “chickpea saag” and “medium spicy vindaloo”. Good for them! Happy to see the ethnic decor that most Indian restaurants in India have done away with-brought a lot of nostalgia. Just not Indian food you can serve to an Indian and get away with...

My favourite curry house in London. It’s old school but the quality of the food is amazing. The staff are polite and attentive. The chicken tikka starter is a thing of beauty and worth a visit for alone.

Good food but awful service - the staff were very rude to my non-English guests, and when I (female) asked for the bill the waiter ignored me and spoke to my boyfriend instead. The food was tasty but service took a very long time, had to wait 20 mins for the bill to arrive even though the restaurant wasn't busy. Poor experience, would not recommend

We used to enjoy the food here but last night was terrible. A vegetable dhansak with no lentils and no veg apart from potato! Oily mushy dhal with no tarka. More soggy potatoes and a paneer as sweet as a cake. No spice or texture to any food. Just mushy and very greasy. The end of the local curry house, such a shame.

Text: The food here used to be so good. Or years my family enjoyed takeaways regularly. But last night, it was not good at all, I could not eat more than a few mouthfuls. The rice was reheated (refried? Leftovers?) and not fresh. The bits of chicken were dry and I think left over. The samosas were tasteless. The vegetable samosas were mushy with no body and not classic potato and peas but some sort of veggie mush. The whole dinner for one cost 25 pounds. It was really not good. I phoned and they said they would replace the meal. With more of the same? They were not listening. I think they sold me leftovers. Their food used to be delicious and I think they have gone downnhill. Maybe safer to eat in? Delivery not a good idea.

The food was very well prepared and extremely tasty, arriving quickly so we weren't sat around waiting for too long. The staff were friendly and efficient. Was a little surprised at the cost as we didn't order that much or anything out of the ordinary, was by far the most expensive meal from a week in the area

They take 12.5% service charge by default, and on top, they do not bother giving your change back (almost £5 in this case)

Delicious - had chicken makhani, sag bhajee & plain naan. Great service too tho restaurant empty so felt like being in a private club! We hadn't been here for over 30 years and were thrilled to find it was still as good as we remembered.

I have been using the Shahbhag Tandoori for meny years. On Saturday I placed at takeaway order. I have to say it was the worst Indian food I have ever had . The Lamb was as tough as old boots and the Chicken was not much better. I had the Tandoori mixed kebab and lamb tikka masala and a few sundries. In total the bill was almost £50 pounds. Today I went back to the the Shahbhag Tandoori Monday and returned the tough food. The manager was very dismissive and did not offer refund. And told me to take it up with Uber eats. I was appalled by the way the manager had total disregard for my complaint. I will never use this restaurant aging. Be warned

A great traditional curry house in the centre of Hampstead. I have been here many times in the past but this was our first visit in a few years and it did not disappoint, service good, food very tasty and all the classics available. Manager very friendly and chatty, gave my daughter a free ice cream!

A friendly Tandoori restaurant on Hampstead High Street. Large murals cover the walls. The food is good, and has all of the usual favourites on the menu.

Very tasty curry and good service. All very fresh. Waiters so helpful and wore makes ALL the time we were there. Hand sanitizer available , cutlery wrapped and clean menus. A good old fashioned curry house with great food.

I visited this restaurant mid-week while my partner was at a work function. I dined alone...cue the violins....the staff were reasonably attentive, the food arrived in good time. It was not the most flavoursome food I have ever eaten but it was value for money and enjoyable. I would definitely return.

Tried for the first time (for many years probably) and enjoyed the pappadum, the king prawn main dish, the garlic tikka chicken dish and the rice, but not the onion bhaji that was too dense (one prefers a lighter bhaji, and preferably with more onion and less lentils) It was quiet in the restaurant with few other diners, so the atmosphere was lacking. Service was very good, being attentive and efficient

Snuck in here during a rainy spell on way back to Hampstead from Parliament Hill. Was about to have pub lunch but this space was open at a time an Indian Restaurant will normally just do Delivery. Tandoori Mixed Grill arrived sizzling and as a grill should and at a reasonable cost. Loved it. Food very good and will repeat a visit. It would be wise to do an all you can eat buffet for Sunday. They used to be as prolific in Indian food as they are in Chinatown offering Chinese....

Friendly service and delicious food.

Always greeted with a warm welcome followed by drink orders being taken promptly, allowing the extensive menu to be studied at leisure. The bill is never a shock and no sooner has one left than the thought of returning springs to mind!

I liked this place alot. The food was delicious, the atmosphere pampered, and the service friendly, polite, and proper. I would recommend this to someone looking for Indian food in the area or someone just looking for a filling dinner. I'm not sure it was unique enough for me to advice you to cross town for it though. If I were in the area I would come back.

The food is tasty and not at all oily. The surrounds are just revamped..and climate controlled pleasant. BUT two male "waiters" are sinister, rude and confrontational characters, scolding customers, invasive conversations with diners and loud at the back...We felt unsafe. Like Fawlty Towers in Hampstead, but very much unfunny , I myself would hesitate to go back...

Excellent food, especially Tawa Lamb, lemon rice, garlic naan, chicken rogan. Attentive staff, relaxed atmosphere.

Staff were not aware of dietary requirements/diets so it was a real pain to order something and when they eventually brought out the dish they made for me, it was plain/boring and very minimal (NOT worth the price of a full main, which is of course what they charged me). They did not serve a side dish we ordered, we had to ask for it as they seemed to have forgotten it: it was then served immediately. However, when we got the bill one additional side was charged which we didn't order and didn't receive so we had to tell them to correct their mistake. Very poor experience. Staff seemed disinterested and unskilled (if you work in the food industry, you should really know about the main diets like gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan). Would not recommend!

Tuve una reunión de negocios aquí la semana pasada. Las chutneys y la fuente de sampler fueron fantásticos. Podría haberlo hecho y haberlo hecho. Las entradas que compartimos 3 diferentes (pollo tikka masala, gambas, cordero y vindaloo). Tikka era débil y no tenía verdadero sabor. Friendly and very good Restaurant

In business since the 1950's ! Classic Indian Tandoori Restaurant - the kind you'd go to a lot 20-30 years ago. Not fancy, not too pricey. Just good, authentic Indian food, served by what feels like an extended family. I had forgotten this type of restaurant existed until we came here. Really a bit like a time warp. We went mostly with the recommendations we were given and were not disappointed. Planning to come back regulaly, as it felt genuine and welcoming.

They’ve been there decades, which tells you something, particularly in Hampstead where competition abounds.

Fuimos allí para una comida familiar, nuestro padre se estaba muriendo en el hospital, decidimos reunirnos aquí para probar y disfrutar de una comida juntos, yo no puedo explicar con palabras lo grosero y poco servicial, el personal! Absolutamente terrible para un establecimiento ofrecen un servicio al público. Los platos y cubiertos casi tiraron a nosotros, que era como en su manera de estar allí, la comida estaba fría y sosa, todos los platos muy genéricos, por favor, no pierda su dinero aquí, cuando pagamos nos preguntó si nos gustaría dejar una propina? ! Decir no más.

Asientos requeridos más en el restaurante y nos dijeron que eran reservados con rudeza y no podíamos sentarnos allí! Como sucedió, hasta que había acabado de comer, no una de las mesas ocupadas por lo que recuerdo más adentro! El personal era grosero y antipático desde el principio. La comida es mediocre - me recuerda de ser un restaurante de Bangladesh (intentar Cocina India) que puede deducirse de la India un sabor, dulzor y especias en la cocina. No recomendaría este restaurante de auténtica comida india/Servicio y no volveremos aquí.

Very nice meal and a nice traditional atmosphere but a pity they don't give the traditional hot towels. Onion should be optional in the pilau rice as I prefer pilau rice with just a few cloves.

Entonces, él dijo. eran un chef corta. Hay varios buenos restaurantes indios en la zona nw3, pero Shahbag siempre delante de ellos. En 15 años de visitas nunca hemos tenido un sub-comida estándar aquí. El personal es siempre eficiente y acogedor. Pruebe cualquiera de los platos especiales del chef o platos parsee...

The food was delicious! The staff was attentive, welcoming and recommended a few dishes to us (which we ordered and were delicious!). The atmosphere was excellent with nice decor and a very good vibe. Definitely one of the best Indian restaurants in town and worth a visit! I will come back soon for sure :)

The cooking at Shahbhag reminds you of the great memories you had, discovering good curries for the first all those years ago. It's hearty and warming comfort food that doesn't disappoint the taste buds nor the memory cells. Their Chicken Razella has just the right amount of up-front 'smokiness' before the richer ingredients take over, and can be excellently complemented with a Sag Aloo side dish, some pilau rice and a decent wine. Considering Hampstead's perennial respect for tradition, the place is a perfect fit.
