An Indian restaurant without frills, but very endearing. It is decorated with portraits of the owner family and old Indian tourist photos and posters. The food is delicious and everything we saw at other tables looked very good too. Of course, a little spicier than what we are used to in Spain. The waiters were very friendly and helpful and the services were very clean. If you like Indian food, I recommend it. 😊

Average food more catered for the English palate, there's much matter Indian cuisine elsewhere on our high streets. Over priced but reasonable for west end I suppose. Bland food had to try just to test the hype as it is labelled the first Indian restaurant in the uk. Out dated decor, nice location, friendly waiters, won't be returning as not missing much.

This was my first visit to the restaurant. I ordered butter chicken, being their signature dish. I got surprised when I understood that the rice should be paid on top (4.5 £) adding an extra 25% to the food price. Butter chicken tasted OK –chicken was overcooked, the stew was nothing special. The aromatic rice, despite being pricey, was tasteless and of low quality; affecting the whole experience negatively. I was in London for one week, so do not know the tipping rules there. Although they included 10% extra service fee, the waiter exclusively asked for tipping. I hope I was not rude to deny it.

I visited Punjab Restaurant in 2011 (was very impressed) and this time with family and friends (joined me because of my recommendation) in July 2024. Massive difference in the quality. I’m an Indian hence I know the flavour, taste and aroma. The food (specially the curry) base was ok but the finish was not good - the flavour was certainly missing. May be, this would have happened because we visited in the afternoon on a weekday and the main chef was not there. Would rate the food quality to be below average. Disappointing and didn’t enjoy the food (felt, wasted our money) - will not come back.

We are from the US and back in 2018, we had rated this place 5*. During our Jul 2024 visit to London we were looking forward to dining here again. Unfortunately, this place is not the same, the food was a big disappointment. It was shocking to see such a sharp decline in the quality of their food. We ordered Paneer Masala and dal Makhni along with cheese naan. All of them were horrendous. The dishes were watery like soup and had no flavor. The cheese naan practically had no cheese. I had to pull apart the whole naan to find a crumb of cheese somewhere. It’s a shame this place has deteriorated so much, this restaurant used to be a London institution when it comes to Indian restaurant. No longer☹️

Lovely restaurant, but unfortunately the service was terrible. We ordered some garlic naan and it came stale, with dry piece of garlic one it, while the family next to us has some fresh naan instead. At my mothers behest I asked the server if we could get some fresh naan, just like the family next to us, and I apologized to the server for being picky. Then they came back with the same exact naan, I thought it was a joke. I asked why they would bring it back, and they just stared at me and blankly said it was good, when it was clearly some old stale naan. I asked again, and again it was literally the same exact piece, not even warmed, and the same blank expression from the server. It was a bizarre experience. Really disappointing, but other people seemed to be enjoying their meal, so we might’ve just gotten unlucky with our server.

It's a small restaurant but a must-go if you are looking for good North Indian food. One of the few places in London that serves authentic Indian cuisine with a good use of spices resulting in food with a taste that scratches that itch of wanting a homely meal away from home. Try and get the table next to the window as it gives a unique feel and view of the street due to the slightly sunken floor of the restaurant.

Punjabi food does not mean just spicy. The chicken tandoori platter was full of red food colour. Except for the Grandpa Dal, every item was a major let down. There were plenty of vegan options on the menu, but beware! The when you order the vegetable biryani (vegan on the menu) you are told it comes with an accompaniment and asked which accompaniment you want (raita or curry). Obviously raita isn’t vegan so we chose curry thinking that must be the vegan option, considering the biryani is advertised as vegan. We were wrong. I swelled up like a big fat balloon. It would be good if the staff said “would you like an accompaniment? Neither option is vegan. If you have a lactose-intolerance, don’t have an accompaniment”. All the other vegan items we ordered were delicious. Apart from the one hiccup, the service was very good. The atmosphere was good except for the two racist men sitting at the next table, but that’s hardly the restaurants fault! In fact it is testament to the professionalism and patience of the staff that they treated the two men with undeserved respect throughout. I would eat here again.

Been here last week and being an Indian who is punjabi, I can tell that this is not at all close to authentic punjabi taste. They are just fooling like most of the restaurants claiming that they serve tasty food. They are just using the name. Indians please do not even try their food, however, they might not be interested in targeting you anyway. 😬 We had ordered a paneer dish and specifically asked to make it authentic since we were from India but it was just waste of money. Naans were okay. Lemonade was the best out all that we ordered but it is not THE BEST. The manager or waiter will be polite with you in the starting and then once you order, you will be ghar ki murgi. 🤣 Also, one more thing so they can will SCAM you by putting surcharge in your bill without your knowledge so please be careful. You can choose not to pay and ask them to remove it from the bill. All in all, as you know every tourist destination has scammers who pretend to be someone and just want your money, this restaurant is a perfect example of that. I will not recommend to even enter this restaurant. There are many local ones which are better and most importantly HONEST. Edit 1: After got the reply Honestly, did not expect your response. This shows you care how your customers feel which is great. However, on the surcharge part, I do not agree. I have been living here for years now and I don’t see this in other restaurants. Been in other places and nobody has put this. And yes if someone takes your money without your consent and pretends it to be legal then it is a scam. Also, fyi I asked your waiter and he gave me a smirk. I am just warning people about this and had he returned my money I would have appreciated and moved on. Happy to know that you have loyal customers. :)

Punjab Restaurant in SoHo is a treasure trove of tradition and taste, being the oldest Punjabi restaurant in London. From the moment we stepped in, we felt like cherished guests, enveloped in warmth and history. The Shahi Paneer and soft Butter Naan were a perfect pairing, while the Lamb Ghost melted in our mouths. Fragrant plain rice tied everything together beautifully. The Mango Lassi was refreshingly sweet, and the South African white wine added elegance. However, what truly made our night was the impeccable service. The staff treated us like family, attending to every need with care and kindness. Called in on Sunday night for a meal. Queue outside but worth the wait, which wasn’t very long at all. Couple of starters then and couple if main chicken dishes, all washed down with drinks. Would highly recommend!

After a very long time I felt that this Indian place is the best I have visited in UK so far. First visit was good so will go back to try new things. Food tasted better than I expected based on previous experience in other Indian restaurants in the UK.

The Indian food here is some of the best I have ever had. The chicken Tikka, the garlic Naan, the family recipes, this place is amazing. We always come here when in town and it always delivers an excellent dining experience.

Hands down the greatest Indian food I have ever eaten. The chicken tikka is top tier, and the cheese and garlic naan is a must. We also tried the paneer pakora as an appetizer and wow, blew us away. The staff was attentive and friendly, and the restaurant was clean and beautifully decorated. 20/10 would recommend!

Good all round indian punjabi restaurant and always busy. Very reasonably priced for a central London location and the food quality is outstanding. 1 star dropped as I'd like to see a bit more choice on the menu
