Great quiet and scenic location, the building dates back from Elizabethan times and it is a miracle that it is still standing. Nothing can compete with genuineness and it is its main draw. I had a quick early lunch after visiting the John Soane's museum. It was the right time to visit as the place is small, and crowded with a surplus of small tables. I just wish the waiter had told me that their portions were humongous and that an appetizer plus a main was enough to feed four people my size. The pumpkin soup alone with two slices of bread would have been enough. But not having been warned, I ordered the pickled herring with potato salad, as an entree which came with five huge, and tasty filets and a bounty of the diced tuber. I could only finish half of it. Waste aside, I was glad to have visited such a quirky place. The wig room storefront is a showstopper. If you need to use the upstairs bathroom, one needs to be young, agile and flexible enough to make it to the top.

Would give seven stars but can't 🤓 EDIT: I still love this pub. However recently it has gone to the wrong side of the pain threshold on pricing unfortunately. £26 for lunch for one with a pint is not quite what I expected to pay in total when the food on the board was listed at £17. I typically don't write reviews like this but I just felt I should say something as I felt a bit ripped off...

We loved the tiny pub on a side street- they have a great wine list and cook a small but varied menu. Watch out for the resident cat too! Only drawback is it's so small it can be hard to find a seat- we wanted to eat there one night but couldn't as there was no space despite waiting through a couple drinks. No reservations either. But shows how popular it is!

Always pop in here when in town. Love the location and the Adnams Broadside. Service is invariably off-hand bordering on the consciously rude but I can live with the underpaid staff taking their frustration out on strangers because their acting careers aren’t going as well as planned. It’s their little victory it seems to have customers scratching their heads and wondering what they’ve done to offend them. Still worth going.

Do not come on a sunny day!!! They had no lagers on tap, so spent £5 on a small bottle of peroni. Went outside to enjoy my peroni. Bouncer lurking. Was told you can't sit and stand further away from the pub than a specific point near the venue, tree outside the venue. Was not given a reason why! Apparently you could buy beers somewhere else (cheaper) and sit there, but not buy beers from the pub and sit there. What a joke.

Seven stars by name and seven stars by rating, if that was allowed. One of the best pubs in Central London, located just off Chancery Lane, this is a real unspoilt gem with a timeless atmosphere. Lovers of old-fashioned traditional pubs should, on no account, miss this one. Theatrical posters and photographs adorn the walls, reflecting the landlady's background. Like the pub itself, the blackboard menu isn't huge, but easily makes up in quality what it lacks in quantity, and varies from day to day. The food is obviously freshly prepared in-house and shows flare and creativity; a world away from the standard pub fayre you find in many places. I opted for the Chicken and Pork Meatballs, a generous portion of five meatballs, no doubt homemade, very tasty and served in a delicious mildly spicy broth. Prices are quite reasonable for Central London - as are the beer prices which are well below what you might expect to pay in similar pubs in this area. Ales appear to be exclusively from the Adnams portfolio. There are a few tables outside, at the front. One word of caution: toilets are accessed via a steep narrow staircase.

Always a pleasure to eat and drink here. The food is excellent and not expensive. And made fresh. Not like a pub chain mass produced and microwaved food. Luckily we arrived before the large early evening crowds. And of course the General is always a pleasure to see! I bring family and friends from abroad for the wonderful real London experience. I had the chicken meatball sandwich which was huge, delicious and piled with fresh unique salad. My friend had the duck legs. We were both very pleased. We adored this bar that we visited during our honeymoon this week. It felt like having a few drinks in someone’s home. Sean kindly prepared a sandwich board for us after a long day of walking. He and Mustafa tolerated my husband and I’s (but mostly my) drunken American antics. The extent of their generous hospitality was topped off by giving The General one too many scratches on his little cat noggin. Thanks so much for making a lovely and warm place to land for first time London tourists. We’ll for sure be back.

Drinks: OK Food: Needs improvement While I enjoyed the food overall, I must express my disappointment regarding the additional charge for what seemed like ordinary slices of stale bread accompanying the pickled herring. The Seven Stars on Carey Street is a gem in the heart of London, steeped in history and brimming with character. This venerable establishment, dating back to 1602, offers a delightful escape into a world where traditional pub charm meets a quirky, inviting atmosphere. Patrons praise the well-kept selection of beers and the friendly bartenders who add to the pub's warm ambiance. The food, reasonably priced, ranges from classic pub fare to more contemporary dishes, satisfying a variety of tastes. Visitors often remark on the pub's unique decor and the quiet, lovely setting that makes it a worthwhile visit, even if it's a bit more expensive than other bars. Such a pity that it was a really charming pub with stories and a famous pub cat who has already returned to the planet of felines, but we found it unbearable. It was so crowded that we couldn’t sit in peace. It didn’t feel relaxing at all. People came in and out, knocking down glasses of beer, stepping on each other’s foot. I went because I was interested to see the oldest pub in London - which is still in the original building. It reminded me of the descriptions of old pubs, before the modern versions took over, where they were more like an ordinary home that sold drink on the premises to be drunk there. So more literally a public house. I went in one ale House decades ago, where there were no beer pumps at all, the bar man brought the beer up from the cellar in jugs, poured directly from wooden firkins. That was in the early 80s, it'll be long gone now. I was going to have a bite of lunch, but changed my mind, I just wasn't feeling it. It has two rooms, one of which contains the bar, both have tables with wipe-able table cloths. The walls are adorned with photos and prints of people and local memories. There is a toilet, up the steepest and narrowest staircase I've encountered in years. The kitchen is up there too. It's real bygone times, as you might expect. I'm not sure I went on the best day, for friendliness etc, but there we are. I'm glad I've seen it anyway.
