Sef Steakhouse in Cheltenham

The atmosphere and decor were excellent, creating a great setting for our meal. Unfortunately, our server mixed up the starters, so we had to wait longer for the correct ones. The beef croquettes were underwhelming and lacked flavour. For the main course, we shared the chateaubriand—the steak itself was delicious, but the sides were disappointingly small. Four small Hasselback potatoes for two people didn’t feel like a sufficient portion.

Poor quality ingredients equally poorly cooked. Left half way through the meal. When I said I am happy to speak to the owner I was told this will never happen… Service is poor at best but location is nice. Very commercial concept. What they are missing is a proper cook and welcoming staff.

We have enjoyed several family meals and meals with couples at Sef. Service is always consistently excellent, food very high standard.

Great food at reasonable prices. 4 snags though. 1. They don’t accept Amex, which for an establishment selling premium steaks is surprising. 2. We were sat on sofas which were really low down compared to the table. 3. They got my girlfriends cocktail order wrong and 4. They only appeared to have one toilet. Overall a good experience and I would definitely go again, the Tomahawk was great and fairly priced, good service aswell other than the cocktail mix up. Mostly annoyed they don’t take Amex.

We had the most amazing meal at Sef Steakhouse! From the moment we walked in, the experience was fantastic. We were served by Adam, and his service was impeccable, his attention to detail and he ensured our glasses were always topped up and we were happy with our meals. Adam was very friendly, and knowledgeable. The food was absolutely delicious; each dish was cooked to perfection and full of flavor. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, making it the perfect setting for a great evening. I would highly recommend Sef Steakhouse to anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience.

Had the lunch offer today - £19 for 2 courses. I had the wings which were DELICIOUS. The coating was nice and crispy and the sauce was amazing. My partner had the pork belly which was nice but didn't blow him away. We both had the rump steak (medium rare) with truffle and parmesan chips and I got the marrow sauce on the side. The steaks were OKAY, but were quite chewy and fatty. I know that rump is a cheaper cut of meat, but it was a little disappointing. I feel the offer is a good value for money, but I don't think we'll be having the steaks again.

We had a great family evening at Sef Steakhouse. A fun atmosphere in an up-market, sophisticated location with attentive service from our waiter Abby, and most importantly some excellent steaks. The menu was diverse with a full range of cuts to choose from and all reasonably priced. Definitely a good value choice if you are looking for enjoyable and tasty night out.

Excellent service and lovely food. We both had scallops to start followed by a fillet for my wife and a ribeye for me, both perfectly cooked. Good choice of side dishes for personal accompaniment and desserts to finish. Friendly and attentive staff, would definitely eat there if staying in Cheltenham again. Highly recommended.

I booked Sef Steakhouse for my partner’s 40th birthday, and it was a great experience! Chloe was the one I worked with throughout the booking process (it was a large booking), and she was amazing. She handled all my questions and made sure everything was set up perfectly. On the day of the celebration, I didn’t have to worry about a thing. Chloe and the whole team were incredibly attentive, and they made sure everything ran on time, especially since we had another activity planned afterward. They even made the payment process at the end super smooth. The food was also amazing! I would definitely recommend Sef Steakhouse to anyone looking for a great spot for a special occasion.

Fantastic steaks cooked to perfection. You can go have a look and pick them. Side orders of roasted veg and rocket and watercress salad were very good. Relaxes atmosphere and excellent service. Would definitely recommend and will visit again when visiting Cheltenham.

Lovey place. Food good but not excellent 😕 very slow service had to ask for more drinks twice, and waited 15 mins at table to be Acknowledge after be seated. Over all, a reasonable experience but had the potential to be excellent.

Best fillet steak I’ve ever had! Food was impeccable from starter to desert, would highly recommend a visit. Waiters and waitresses were very accommodating and interactive. We all had a great time!

Arrived with 12 chaps celebrating my stag day. We were warmly welcomed by front of house gentleman. Our waiter was Abby ‘sorry if miss spelt’ He as amazing & looked after us very tentatively. 12 guys ordering food,wine beers he wasn’t ruffled at all & was very professional. Food was exceptional & the 3 courses that we had were delicious. Would definitely recommend & will be returning again soon. Thank you Abby & Sef for a wonderful experience 🍾🥂👌🏻

This was our 3rd visit to Sef after two 4/5 star visits. Tonight though the visit was awful, my wife, 12 year old child and myself were sat next to a table of about 20 blokes who were freely and loudly swearing, being derogatory about women and behaving as though the restaurant was a wetherspoons pub. Several complaints across 4 tables were made but nothing was done to curb the behaviour. The manager did not intervene once, instead asking the waiter to manage it, but nothing changed. Although we got a discounted meal and the table next to us got a discounted meal too for the inconvenience, it seems the full Sef customer service experience went to the highest bidders, the drunken party. Half my steak was fat, my daughters had to be sent back as it was rare not medium. After our main, we left ASAP without dessert or further drinks. The service from our waitress was very good and is the only thing positive to write about on this occasion. Like I say, I have had 2 very positive experiences at Sefs, but this time was very poor and the management need to be more proactive in challenging behavior like we saw today.

Lovely meal in Sef Steakhouse. The service was good and the atmosphere was lovely. The food was good but not on par with the pricing. It’s evident that this restaurant is trying to be everything it can but unfortunately falls short in a few areas. Firstly keeping cutlery. If you will charge a 10% service fee I would expect fresh cutlery to be provided. Secondly, although the service is good I don’t believe it warrants a 10% service charge and suspect this has more to do with the location. In short, this restaurant needs to either show it is worth the pricing and service charge and provide a service one would expect of the same or lower its fees and provide the service it currently provides

Deeply disappointed It’s my first time at this place and I had quite high expectations. The only good thing about this place is the interior design. The food was tasteless, the chefs are seriously afraid of salt and spices, the service was non existent, we had a full table of dirty plates the whole time, we expected the table to be cleaned at least before the desserts but it never happened. That’s a shame because the place has a potential!

Pleasantly surprised with the set menu lunch. Reasonably priced and good quality. Service was exceptionally good. Steak was excellent. There's lots of these types of places now in Cheltenham, but the service here was one of the best. Will go back again.

This was our first trial for this steakhouse so that we chose the promoted lunch set to see the kitchen’s level to decide whether we can try better steaks here next time. The setting up was good and the service was very welcoming and nice. Generally speaking, we would like to give 8 of 10 for the food because the portion of the 8 oz Rump steak was too dry and chewy and you can see very clearly from the picture. I guessed the chef didn’t coat the outside steak with olive oil enough and the fire was not that well controlled…And the mushroom sauce should not be over runny like this for steak. After we told the service team, they did ask us whether we need them to recook for us which was a very good attitude. Other foods like Pork belly, Beef Carpaccio and British famous sticky Toffee pudding were quite nice.

i really dont understand the hype around this place - ordered the scallops and got 2 for £12??? its noisy, uncomfortable and incredibly mid.

DO NOT TRUST YOUR BILL! Went here with friends for a Christmas get to gether meal. Very quiet Monday evening and we were sat promptly. Drinks order was taken and then food order was taken once drinks had arrived. Food wasn't very long to come out but the portions were tiny. 5 small pieces of calamari for a starter and a bit of pork belly that was maybe 2 bites and that's it. £6 each. Taste was fine, nothing special and nothing to write home about. Mains were up next, had the Chateaubriand sharing steak with my wife and the steak was lovely, cooked well and tasted good. The sauces of peppercorn and mushroom were bland and lacked any distinct flavour. We had the sides of onion rings and chips which were average. We also ordered the Mac and cheese which had very overcooked pasta which was on the verge of mush in a very watery cheese sauce. Really not a Mac and cheese I would EVER order again. Deserts were fantastic though. Exactly what we were hoping for! Loved the chocolate fondant! Finally when the bill came, we asked for the AUTOMATIC 10% service charge to be removed so we could leave a tip at our discretion, when we received the bill back, they had put a Sef Supplement item on the bill, just smaller than the tip amount. Disgraceful and disgusting from, who I am assuming was, the manager. £240 for an average meal which I could have gone to a miller and carter or another steak house and had a better experience for well below that. I will NOT be going again and nor will I be recommending this to friends or family.

Left a little disappointed after hearing great things. Easy booking process, when arrived we were seated at our table. We booked for 2:45 and were asked for our order pretty quickly, I requested a drinks menu beforehand to choose from before our food as is standard in most restaurants. I chose the sirloin which they had none of, fine recommended the Roast Pork, my mother ordered a child’s roast lamb. Food came quickly, however my mums portion was more than mine, I had two roast potatoes, mum was given four, the only difference was the size of the plate and the adult portion was £10 more!!!! The pork was so fatty and overcooked, I could only taste fat or charcoal. Lovely veggies and great Yorkshire pudding. Mum enjoyed her lamb, however it was more of a pulled lamb than a nice lean meat. Puddings, same disappointment as they had no fondant and I didn’t fancy anything else on the menu. I thought we’d booked a great time to enjoy the full menu, lesson learned book early as the best bits will be gone. The service was ok, no designated server to look after us. Excellent Black Forest martini, really enjoyed that. A real shame as we’d have easily stayed for more drinks and pudding and spent more if things were available. My rating is down to this experience, I’d go back but it would be at 12pm as I think it would be completely different!

Me and my sons visited last night , I had the roasted marrowbone and porterhouse steak ,both super tasty and done to perfection, service was welcoming and attentive, praise to Abby Kabir our waiter. Highly recommend! Will be coming back with the wife for a perfect date night .

We were a group of 6 celebrating a birthday. I was disappointed with my experience here on this occasion. We had to wait for our food for over 30 minutes, the service was standard and the food wasn't to my personal taste. Though, the drinks were amazing and the environment was good.

Probably one of the best meals I've had in quite a while. Met at the door by Josh, who not only guided us to our table but also through the whole experience. The food was cooked to perfection and well presented. Only two minor problems. I've seen postage stamps bigger than the portion of sticky toffee pudding, and the lighting determined that the meal had to eaten utilising braille. By far, the most wondrous steak I've eaten in Cheltenham. I'd also like to thank Kate, who accompanied me on this gourmet extravaganza.

Fifth visit and the best yet. Lunchtime fixed price. Delicious carpaccio followed by a sublime medium rare rump steak. Truly the best £20 you can spend for lunch in Cheltenham.

Apps, wine and steak were really good. The deserts though. Wow. Amongst the best deserts I've ever had. Baclava wasn't overly sweet so you could actually taste the ingredients, elevated by adding a bit of the vanilla ice cream. I had a bite of a friend's cheesecake and could actually taste the dairy components and not just straight sugar. Truly amazing.

Had the tomahawk steak last night, and it was reasonable. Nothing you couldn't get anywhere else. Well presented establishment, however lacking in fine dining quality in food.

Food was delicious and beautifully presented. Abby Kabir provided excellent service. He was attentive, entertaining and efficient. Would highly recommend for a fancy night out.

Do not go here if you are hungry. We waited ages for the food which was small portions. Yes it was beautifully cooked but very expensive for the quantity. We ordered sides of roasted vegetables for £5.85 a portion and when they arrived it was 5 pieces of parsnip, making each piec of parsnip £1.17. We didn't dare wait for dessert if it was available. The bill for 3 of us was pence under £100. There was no reason for the delay as there were only a couple of other tables occupied.

If you want a proper steak with a proper experience go to the Ox 5 minute walk away. The steak was fine nothing to write home about. Sides were basic felt like it was literally out of the packet onto the plate vibes. Staff were fine no complaints. The tables in the restaurant when you’re near the window are very close together so whenever a waiter comes to serve the tables either side of your his arse is on top of your food… not ideal. Overall a 6/10

It was my birthday and my partner arranged for us to visit the steakhouse with a few friends. I was VERY excited to get a properly cooked steak as it’s a real favourite of mine. When our food arrived after a good 50 minute wait, I was disappointed to see that the steak I’d ordered “blue” had come medium rare. Our waiter didn’t come back to check in with us so I went up to the welcome stand to ask it to be redone. By the time I got my food again the rest of our table had long finished eating so I had my (albeit delicious) steak on my own. By means of apology for the steak having to be sent back, we received 50% off my order which was very generous. But then after we’d left the restaurant we received a call saying that we’d actually been charged for another tables bill on top of our own. The restaurant did inform us they were planning on refunding us the money we’d paid for another table. Obviously, we understand that mistakes happen and we are grateful that they were willing to own up to it but on a special night, we’d hoped that there wouldn’t have been those mistakes in the first place. The food WAS fantastic but the wait time, the mistakes with the order, not getting good service and then being double charged to finish the night really spoiled what should have been a great celebration.

Excellent food and service. Pricey but worth it. Selected from the lunchtime menu. Flat iron steak grilled perfectly to medium rare as requested. Very tasty and succulent. Prmitivo wine was smooth and well rounded. Service was extremely attentive and on point. Would have given 5 stars had we'd been advised, at time of ordering that the only available Chardonnay we requested to go with the cheese board was as much per glass; for two, as a whole bottle of a pinot or sauvignon was. Bit if a shock when the bill arrived 😭. We should have asked to see the wine list again I guess!!

I got the beef burger with bone marrow and my family were sharing a big steak together. The meat was lovely and very nicely cooked! The chips were nothing special and the lemon tart was sadly not the best. The atmosphere is nice but it was lacking in coat hanger/bag dropping locations and the service took quite a long time with having to ask to get our plates taken for dessert. The white port was lovely and overall it was nice!

This restaurant has really good bones. It appears as a well run establishment, very clean and modern, lots of staff and the atmosphere was great. However the service was not where we would expect from any restaurant, we were left waiting at every stage. Our drinks order was taken after being seated for 15 mins, and late guests to our table were then left waiting even longer, our meal took a good 40 minutes after we ordered. The food was good when it arrived and steaks were cooked correctly for our entire table. It was somewhat annoying that we were only asked if our meals were ok after 3 of our party had finished their meal, and then we had to ask for our bill twice. There is definitely room to improve the service here and I won’t be rushing back.

Fantastic experience, my only comment would be that it would be nice if they included a tiny bit more sauce with the steak. But the atmosphere and service was absolutely fantastic. Absolutely not to be missed if your in Cheltenham!

Really impressed with this place- set lunch menu at £23- excellent quality starters/ steak fries sauces/ drinks- have paid more than twice as much for less before- really good staff and service- proper 5 stars couldn’t fault it give it a go.

Lunchtime menu. First course I had the belly pork bites with apple and fennel sauce. Pork beautifully tender but under seasoned. Sauce tasted neither of apple nor fennel. Mains had a rare rump steak with fries. Steak was perfectly cooked, very tender, and was very tasty. Generous quantity of crispy skinny fries. Good dressing on the green leaf salad. Despite the pork being underwhelming, as I can’t give the experience 9/10, happy to give 5*. £19 for two courses is excellent value for money.

I don’t mind spending close £200 on a meal for two, but I do expect good quality throughout. Unfortunately, while not offensively bad, it’s not one I will come back too. Small things like wrong side brought over, took over 5 mins to replace/despite it taking less than 30 seconds to correct, all while food getting cold. I had to ask for water 3 times. Steak not quite on point for its cut, fat not marbled. It was still a good restaurant, but if you want to charge good prices, you need to deliver.

We ate an early dinner at Sef and we were very disappointed in our steaks and how they were cooked and presented for steakhouse being in the name of the restaurant The salads and the meatball appetizer were all very good but the kitchen failed when it came to the ribeye steaks. Our steaks had no marbling we’re very dry and appeared to be New York strip steaks and not realize the kitchen had sliced the steaks and appeared to cook them more, which dried them out even worse. One steak was ordered to well done and it was so tough. It was more like beef jerky. The second ribeye was ordered to medium temperature and it was more like between medium well to well done no pink except on one or two slices. I questioned the waiter why the steaks had been sliced as they were so dried out and overcooked and he advised that’s just how the kitchen prepares them and a well done steak was ordered and a well done. Steak was presented and they offered no refund for the steak that was not eaten. I really do not believe we were served the steak that we ordered. (I’m pretty sure this was a New York strip and not a ribeye and someone just got it wrong at the kitchen). Throughout our 21 days in the UK these two steaks were the worst we had for the entire trip. The Fiket was cooked as ordered and not butterflied, therefore it was still tender and juicy. No visit from Management and our waiter stated that if we would have told him when we got the steaks that we weren’t happy that he would’ve taken them back and re-cooked them (not going to happen as I don’t let my food leave the table to be “re-cooked” a second time). For the price paid not worth the money.

I recently went with a group and had a great farewell lunch for friends at the Sef Steakhouse in Cheltenham with their £19 set menu. I started with the Beef Carpaccio, which was fresh and flavorful, topped with rocket leaves, capers, and a nice Caesar dressing. For the main, I went with the Fish of the Day, which was I really enjoyed and it paired well with the mashed potatoes and chive velouté and a glass of white wine. I also tried some of my friends’ dishes: the Pork Belly Bites with pickled fennel and apple sauce were delicious, and the Cauliflower Steak with black garlic gel and Malabar sauce which was something different and super tasty. The wine and cocktail lists were solid—great choices all around. I skipped dessert from the set menu but instead shared a cheese plate to share and enjoyed a dessert cocktail and a port, which was a great finish to the meal. I’m definitely excited to come back for dinner to try one of the fancier steaks for dinner. However, it’s worth mentioning that none of the 8 oz rump steaks ordered by our group were cooked to the requested specifications—they were all much rarer than we asked for. Nobody complained because we didn’t want to make a fuss, and nobody is perfect, and they just might not have been focused late into a lunch service with the cheaper cuts of steak. The wait staff were super friendly and attentive, as were the bar staff making the cocktails. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal and will definitely come back for a lunch and try it out for dinner at some stage.

I had the chateaubriand which I asked for medium. I presume they cook how the meat should be served for maximum taste as it was rare. Very nice steak. The sides complemented the dish very well and everything was well presented. The only complaint from me is they don't accept Amex. This is a high end establishment and I'd expect them to accept it. Total cost for 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 children was £300

Terribly salty poisonous and spicy Sunday roast! When notified waiter said ‘no one else had complained’ and when they do then he’ll do something about it. Got very threatening and argumentative and towered over me in an intimidating aggressive manor when I mentioned I didn’t think his reply was professional. Ruined a special meal with bad food and even worse service! AVOID at all costs!

Honestly, this was the best steak that I’ve had. It was succulent, tender, and flavourful. The service from Abby at Sef Steakhouse was second to none. He really is a credit to the restaurant. It was impressive to hear that the meat is locally sourced from a farm in Gloucestershire, you can tell. I highly recommend this place! You won’t regret going!

We had Sunday lunch, it was pleasant but there is room for improvement, the Yorkshire was too over cooked and the beef was quite fatty. Maybe their signature dishes is the steak and we would like to try this.

Our waiter Abbi was a right old fun geezer. We enjoyed his service. Plus the steaks were well cooked too.

Great service. Steak was amazing, so soft and melt in the mouth. We shared the Chateaubriand and it came with 2 sides and 2 sauces. It was the perfect amount of food for two people. Would definitely recommend.

Unfortunately the ribeye steak was sinewy & didn't have a lot of flavour compared to ribeyes I've had in the past & the filet steak my wife had was sub standard too. The service was excellent & sitting out & eating on the balcony made up partially for the quality of the steak.

Great quality beef is air dried to make tasty, tender steaks. Impressive, short wine list with a couple of good South African reds from Buitenverwachting.

Wow what an amazing place! We were absolutely spoilt from the great service, to the amazing food! Would highly recommend, although it look like it doesn't need it as it was already so so busy constantly throughout the evening!

Absolutely delicious meal here with my family. Highly recommend and such good value for money too.

Great steak house in the middle of Cheltenham....we had a great meal with great choice and quality.

Food was really tasty we had the bonemarrow as a starter and a ribay for mains. Steak was beautifully cooked just didn't have any salt on it. That's why the 4 star it's really overpriced in general for don't take the bother to add salt on it. Don't order the prawns as a starter it's really nice but £22 for 3 prawns I think is take the piss at people. Otherwise really good service and clean place.

I was really looking forward to eating at Stefs Steakhouse and I booked it for my birthday meal this year with friends. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to the decor and atmosphere considering steaks are the main show they were not the quality I was expecting and would expect for the price we paid. 😔

Have been going here for a while and returning regularly but have too say standards have dropped dramatically since our last visit. Can you please return it back too how it was not so long ago. Also can we clear up issue that in England Chips are Chips, French fries are fries ! Please return proper chips to accompany a steak.

Another visit, same excellent service, food and atmosphere. About 35 plus a head now. Return visit, better than l quoted last visit, staff exceptionally helpful, the fillet steak perfection, best l had from memory, great wine....Very nice steak house with high quality aged meats.Price on the upper side but made up in the quality of the meat. Service for me was good one waiter was very aware and attentive, a tall Turkish man, other than him it was a little relaxed for what appears to be rum as a high end restaurant. The decor is modern and clean, dark and relaxing. I suspect it's a very busy place at the weekends and evenings. Overall very good quality, certainly l would go back.
