This is a resturant I have wanted to visit for a long time. When it opened the Sunday Times did a story on it and how the owner was to use local seafood and produce in an Indian food way. He also intended to have a small menu as opposed to the usual mad oversized selections at your usual Curry House. After eating at the ‘Spice’ last night I am glad to report that some years later that unique plan is still in place. On arrival myself, the lady and a couple of her family were seated in a very airy spacious restaurant which looked nothing like the standard Indian eatery, very English with no dodgy music! On the food, I had brilliant Peppered Scallops in a great onion/tomato sauce to start with other dishes chosen was a Vegetable Samosa and the Tandoori Lamb Chops. The main course I went for was the Braised Suffolk Lamb Shank with a flavoursome sauce that I asked to be served Madras heat. It was great!Other choices eaten were, Lamb Rogan Josh, Chicken Korma and Chicken Malai Kebab, nice sides, rice and breads with a special mention for my personal favourite vegetable dish, the Tadka Daal which was the best I’ve had. All in all this was a really great Indian meal, staff were friendly and attentive, I will be going back.

I’ve been lucky enough to eat Indian food all my life. I have also worked in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka for at least a year.In the UK I constantly dream about the food I’ve eaten when i’ve been a guest in these countries. My main base is in London and I can honestly say that despite eating a lot of Indian food there nothing comes near to the quality of the cooking I experienced today in Alderburgh.Absolutely 10 out of 10. I’m mystified as to why this restaurant hasn’t scored five stars across the board it is absolutely the best Indian food I’ve eaten in the UK.I will be back again and again and again et cetera.

Unfortunately this is not a good review. The setting is beautiful, previous reviews very good but it was disappointing to say the least. The staff were pleasant, we ordered our food and when it was delivered that was the last we saw of any waiters. We wanted to order more drinks and a bottle of wine with out meal but the service got progressively worse throughout the evening which was a shame. Mid way through the meal my girlfriend left the restaurant feeling extremely unwell and was unfortunately very nauseous and sick. I went to the desk to request the bill to leave in a hurry and then waited a further 15 minutes before losing my patience waiting for the bill and paying at the till. I am not normally one to complain as I have worked in hospitality for a number of years, but it was more then a coincidence that we both fell extremely ill shortly after and during eating, it was an extremely unpleasant evening (to spare you the details). I rang the following morning to let the restaurant know we were both extremely ill which was met with apologies and the promise they would follow up. I would describe their response slightly defensive, letting us know that nobody else had fallen ill that night. I would have expected perhaps a little more remorse which was a huge shame. We have not heard back from them since which brings me to write this review. It was extremely disappointing both the meal and the way our complaint/ experience was handled. We were only away for a couple of nights and this unfortunately did spoil our trip, traveling home feeling rather queasy.

We do not eat Indian food on a regular basis but have been to some really nice authentic Indian restaurants over the years, however, this one has to be at the top of our list. It was fantastic, small ish menu but fresh and top quality ingredients. We were spending two nights at The White Lion and booked for the first night in Sea Spice but elsewhere for the second night. However, we changed this so we could enjoy another night eating delicious Indian cuisine. Service excellent, COVID arrangements very good. Yes, price wise it’s more expensive than your normal takeaway but worth every penny.

If you fancy a curry in Aldeburgh, save yourself £100, go to Co-op on the high street and buy a ready meal and you will be more impressed.Without a shadow of the doubt, the poorest Indian we have ever been too! All meals are pre-cooked and microwaved or boiled in the bag. This is not proper Indian food! We got given plates before our meal arrived, and by the time our meal came our plates were stone cold, so halfway through the meal our food was stone cold- disgusting.£19 spent on 2 and a bit starters, and one of them was four pieces of fried chicken, with no salad or sauce, just a silly piece of lemon to make it look bog standard presentable. And as for the curries, the lamb shank was a joke and was worth more like £5 than £20.Overall, not very impressed, people that are impressed by this restaurant have no idea what true Indian cuisine is and should really think about going elsewhere!

Food is ok but expensive. Lamb chops were pre cooked and so overdone when they arrived (but we’re tasty). Dayboat lobster was lobster in scrambled duck egg which was not explained and not a good idea. Rest of food was a tad above what you’d find in a standard Indian with a decent tandoor oven. The room is lovely. 3 of the 4 beers listed on the rather unfancily-named ‘bucket’ deal (buy 4 bottles of craft beer for £12) we’re not available. And there was no bucket. Service was chaotic. Too many people, too few knowing what they’re doing. And the girl on the front desk making sure we’re wearing masks did it with such little charm that she should be working in security not hospitality. £130 for three of us. Not an Indian in sight, but then they’re few and far between in this part of the world. If these were the teething problems of a restaurant that had just opened, I’d understand. But Sea Spice has been open a while know. It’s baffling it hasn’t ironed out these problems by now. I should add that they gave us one menu, mounted in plastic, for three people. Not the standard disposable paper based ones that every other restaurant seems to be using during Covid. Surely they can find a way to get guests one menu each??

This was our first post covid lockdown venture into a restaurant. I had heard some good reviews on the place so wanted to give it a try. In terms of looking after customers wellbeing I think they coped quite well, I felt no anxiety being there albeit I visited shortly after they opened and there was only one other party in the restaurant. Service was good and pragmatic with different staff delegated with specific roles. All were masked. The menu I felt was limited, but such is the nature of the covid beast it places restrictions on many aspects of life including variety. However there was something to suit most tastes. The food was good although the fish curry was difficult to judge in terms of the quality of the fish used.

When we arrived to the Sea Spice restaraunt we were told that we had been seated in the Hotels restaraunt area (not sure of the reason...?). Whilst I can't compare what it was like with Sea Spice itself, the restaraunt lacked atmosphere and it definitely felt like we were eating in a hotel and not an authentic Indian restaurant, which was a shame. I dont know whether this is a thing they do regularly, but we would have appreciated being informed at booking. The food is tasty, although lacked any effort in presentation. The chefs "signature" sharing lamb shank was delicious, but hardly a sharing dish when you get only a few mouthfuls of lamb each. Definitely recommend ordering more than you think you'll need! The service was slow (but perhaps to be expected with the new COVID regulations) but none of the staff showed any interest in our enjoyment of our meal/experience. The plates from the previous course was left on our table, TWICE! When the wrong starters were brought to us, there was no apology or effort to remedy the situation by the member of staff, he simply took the plates away and we waited for another 10 minutes for the correct ones to arrive! The layout of the hotel restaruant meant that we were also able to see/hear other people receive incorrect meals or wait for long periods without any staff interaction.I think the restaraunt had over stretched itself with bookings and unfortunately, it really showed! If looking to eat in Aldeburgh, perhaps try one of the many other nice places to eat!

We ate here on Friday night when on a long weekend in Aldeburgh. It's a big restaurant and was probably two thirds full. They had about 5 waiting staff so we were served efficiently. We liked the variations from the standard menu, so I chose the scallop starter which was lovely (and included 5 large scallops which is more than you get in most restaurants for starters), and my husband chose the muntjac vindaloo which he also really enjoyed - although after worrying about how hot the vindaloo might be, he actually wished it had had a bit more heat! He also enjoyed some tasty lamb chops for his starter and my main was butter chicken. His special main came with garlic naan and rice, and we also ordered a plain naan and rice to share, so we found we had over ordered and then suffered in the night afterwards, with indigestion after the rich food in volume, but that was our fault for eating everything! Very happy with the quality.

The choices were different and exceptional and the spice tasted very distinct in each dish. I had the Broccoli and Cauliflower and my husband had the Paneer starters and we were bowled over with the taste and fragrance - fabulous. If we were being picky we would say the very good value Bhaji nibbles were not as crispy as they could have been. Having read about Sea Spice and being in the area we called in and thought it looked OK so decided to eat. The menu claims that the food is traditional rather than what your average Indian restaraunt serves up across the UK. The menu read well, Mrs IT ordered Salmon Tikka I ordered a Chicken Biryani, both dishes were a huge disappointment. The salmon was just three chunks sitting sadly on a dish and plain rice in a small bowl, it did not bode well. My biryani saw a bowl piled high with rice, turned out to be saffron, I dislike what I term scented food, with five chunks of chicken underneath. Two mouthfuls was enough, dry, uninteresting, same with my wife's she only got through hers due to a small pot of yoghurt. I advised the waiter I simply could not eat my meal, to be fair he took it off the bill. I was advised that the food was prepared as they do in Northern India, sadly I do not feel this is suited to the UK taste buds. Asian food should be full of flavour, moist with spices and sauces, just look at the food programmes on TV. Mrs IT and myself had high hopes we left feeling let down, and hungry.

When we mentioned this we were immediately told what he could and couldn’t have. The quality of the food was outstanding - we couldn’t’t fault it. The staff couldn’t do enough for you but without being to over-bearing. The restaurant decor, music and interior design made for a truly fantastic evening - a highlight of our stay. We will return!

We had pre booked and pre ordered, as we were a group of 12 friends. Excellent service and food that offered original and unique flavours and combinations. My own lamb chops were succulent, had clearly been marinated to give good texture and flavour, and had five large chops. Others reported excellent seafood dishes, exceptional King prawn starters, and portions were generally hot with good sizes.

Visited Sea Spice on Good Friday evening for dinner as we thought it would be a nice change from dining at the Wentworth Hotel. We were not disappointed; service was a little iffy and slow at first but soon recovered. The cuisine was excellent, with interesting Suffolk twists on Indian favourites; Nuntjac Vindaloo for example. Excellent wines too. We will certainly pay Sea Spice a return visit.

A late evening choice saw me rush down from my accommodation to arrive in time to get served. That was a good choice. A super tilapia fish curry with a well cooked bread hit the mark. Great stuff.

I’d heard good things about this Indian and have to say it was excellent, surpassing my expectations. The meal started well with a good choice of wines, beers and cocktails. My starter was prawns in a light batter which were just mouthwatering. I then had the chicken kebab with butter naan. The kebabs was large and tasty. The Nan just melted in your mouth. The restaurant allowed starter sizes for many main courses allowing you to manage the size of food to be consumed. My husband loved his meal as well. The service and price was good. I think the only thing that could be a slight downside is how close the tables are. It was ok when we visited as not fully booked. If fully booked it could feel quiet cosy.

The food is excellent with very generous portions. My husband ordered prawns which had been coated in flour and deep fried which he said were very tasty. I had a Dhosa filled with spiced potatoes and was served on a large platter which included 3 dips and a portion of dhal, absolutely delicious. The starter itself was very filling and our main meals did not disappoint. My husband ordered a lamb dish and mine was chicken. There was a lot of meat in both and the flavours in the sauces was beautifully balanced. We ordered 1 portion of rice between us and it was adequate for 2 unless you happen to have a very large appetite. Poppadoms were very good served with 3 dips. I would definitley recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Indian food. Staff were very pleasant and service was efficient.

I realise that this is very subjective, however this restaurant is an absolute gem and is well worth a visit. The food is delicious, the slow cooked Dhal Makhani is the star of the show, but followed closely by pretty much everything else (I can’t believe that it a am endorsing a veggie dish over a meaty one being a lifelong carnivore but it was that good)! Ambiance - has a touch of the a post- colonial club dining room and the service both swift and efficient. Can’t wait to go back!

I arrived to find 6 of my family members all procrastinating over what to do for dinner. I had no intention of cooking and sea spice was the first one we called. Both my kids don’t eat curry but they confirmed we could have access to the kids menu to the other restaurant in the hotel. All in all a great meal and they were very accommodating. It got really busy so service dropped a little bit is definitely recommend it.

We took the precaution of booking which proved the right thing to do as it got quite busy towards the end of the evening. Great open airy room very friendly and most helpful staff. The menu was not extensive and contained some new to me items, But WOW the food we had was superb, tasty spicey we asked if we would like a break between courses this was most welcome as the portions are generous.

Attentive service, nice surroundings, but not much else. Food not the greatest, but presented to seem better than it really is. Bad case of smoke and mirrors. Aldeburgh is expensive. This is very expensive for a fairly average if not poor meal.

Staying in the White Lion so booked an evening meal here. Ordered nibbles of popadoms and chutneys. A nice mix of popodoms and 3 quite different chutneys. Perhaps the popadoms could have been a tad better if served warm? Both starters ordered (Prawn Titley and Lamb Samosa) were lovely and eased down by cracking open a bottle of Merlot. Main courses of Lamb Byriani and Chicken Tikka Masala were ordered along with a couple of side dishes. All were very good with no hint of excess cooking oils. A minor quibble was having to order a vegetable curry as an extra to go with the Byriani - normal this would be part of the dish.

We had a lovely meal here tonight. We called in on the off chance of getting a table and even though they were busy they found us one. The food and wine were fabulous if just a little expensive. Atmosphere was good and the setting nice, relaxed and a little different.

Sea Spice was part of the hotel I was staying in (The White Lion), so I got to study a menu in my room before booking. The dishes were an eclectic mix of the usual, the recognisable, and the 'what the hell was that!?' so I had to give it a go. I made a good choice. I can't remember the name of my starter, but it was a large potato stuffed crepe, which sounds whacky, but tasted amazing. The popadoms were also a nice little collection of small offerings with amazingly good dips - especially the mint raita which had been cut with peas (I think) to enhance the flavour. Having a Bhuna for main course was, in the circumstances, a bit mainstream, but it was perfectly cooked, as were the Bombay Aloo and steamed rice it came with. Sea Spice would be the first place I'd go to whenever I go back to Aldeburgh, and it has serious competition for eating out, so that's saying something.

My wife and I had a truly amazing meal at Sea Spice. The menu is very authentic (The muntjac vindaloo was superb), the staff are incredibly professional and polite and the quality of the food was truest outstanding. The restaurant is beautiful designed with a modern colonial twist. Very well priced wine list and I would highly recommend the Lamb Samosas... they were to die for. I can’t wait to go back and it is the must visit restaurant when in Aldeburgh!!!

We were a table of five and sat while the restaurant was more than half full, we were sat promptly and offered drinks and nibbles while choosing the rest of the meal, nibbles of crisp popodums and mini onion bahjis were great, we all chose starters and mains, I had uttapam as a starter something I’ve never had and was pleasantly surprised a fermented rice pancake with chutneys and a lentil curry. For mains I chose the chicken jalfrezi which had the right balance of taste and heat, being their third birthday we all received a glass of complimentary Prosecco which was a bonus.

I was a little concerned about the recent reviews, but we wanted to try sea spice again and it did not disappoint. We all really enjoy the food and atmosphere here. It's really one of the best Indian restaurants in the area. The Muntjac curry and Lamb Shank are worth the drive from home in Southwold.

Beautiful venue, wonderful location. Service was patchy. Some good food. Bad first impression as we were served fridge cold - really freezing - chutneys so they lacked flavour to go with the tiny portion of poppadoms.

All the dishes were excellent and mildly spicy. The Venison Vindaloo was very good. Would definitely visit again if we come to Thorpness.

We’ve visited Sea Spice quite a bit since it opened and it was one of our favourite places, serving innovative Indian cuisine with a local twist. However our most recent outing was very disappointing. Food and drinks took ages to arrive and the servers, who were both very nice, were clearly overstretched and not communicating with one another.

We had heard great things about Sea Spice very recently but it wasn’t at all what we expected. The nibbles were pleasing and came with a dipping sauce-the waitresses didn’t know what it was when asked by our neighbouring table which seemed a little strange. My husband had a fish curry from the signature dishes. He expected a delicate, well constructed and up to date in terms of presentation dish - instead he received a piece of fish with a very large amount of sauce and dry rice and flat greasy naan all just plonked on the plate. We weren’t allowed to swap the garlic naan for a peshwari naan even though we were willing to pay extra to do so. I had a starter of tandoori prawns for my main course-consisting of 2 prawns for £9.00- 3 would have been a lot better! I choose the Tarka daal to accompany it - it was very liquid with no evidence of lentils so little if any texture. We expected a lot more so we won’t be returning.

We were recommended by a friend on how lovely the food was. Four of us went Saturday 9th February. service was not good, only offered one drink when we first got there. One of our side dishes was forgotten, waiter did sort this out. I had king prawn tandoori, which came out with just rice and prawns, which in my opinion were over cooked and no flavour, all very dry as no sauce . Would of complaind, but by this time to try and get waiter over was near impossible. My friend had chicken korma, which she said had no flavour at all. Will say the two people in our party did enjoy there meal. We then at to wait 30 to 40 minutes for out table to be cleared, was going to have dessert but had lost the will. For the cost of the meal, thought all above comments were not acceptable.
