Sea Horse in Dumfries & Galloway

Stayed at Dalbeattie for a couple of days and decided to treat ourselves to a Chinese Takeaway from Sea Horse. The service was very prompt and the food was absolutely excellent and portions huge. (And so well priced as well!) I genuinely do not understand some of the poor reviews. This was the BEST chinese takeaway food we have had in a long time. 😋😋😋😋😋😋

Visited the restaurant three times while on holiday in Dalbeattie. We found the staff friendly and helpful. Relaxed and welcoming restaurant. There was plenty to choose from on the menu. We really enjoyed the food and it was promptly served but without being rushed.

Unfortunately just not to our taste . Staff and service was nice. Visited while on holiday in the area , perhaps we are spoiled by all the choice staying in a city. Appreciate that each resturant has its own recipes and ways of presenting dishes it just wasn't enjoyable for us . The 'salt n chilli chips' were the real standout dissapointment - I think they were around 5 pounds and sadly they were frozen chips with a little chilli flakes on top.

We tried this Chinese as was on holiday in southerness, we normally go to the Rose garden but it was full but wish we had just skipped this place. Chicken and sweetcorn soup was ok but very jelly like and hardly any chicken in it. Chicken satay the chicken was like the same from the soup little bits of boiled chicken which didn't seem like breast of chicken was a very strange texture. Chicken breast curry was ok but full of chilli flakes for some reason I don't think a curry sauce needs additional seasoning. The chicken breast was char grilled and burnt in places so made it a little tough to eat. The sweet and sour chicken balls were lovely this was a saving grace batter was nice and thin and crispy not doughy. Also bonus was you get plenty of rice and noodles. But sadly the meals themselves were very dissapointing. Finished with salt and chilli chips with half cooked chips and just sprinkled with chilli flakes not the best won't take a visit again.

Brilliant, fresh Chinese food, lovely staff and great family that own it, only Chinese in Dalbeattie I would use, been there for years and hopefully be there for years to come.

where else on this planet can i phone say my name and have my all time favourite fried fish with salad delivered to my door within 15 minutes try that in new york or glagow or kumassi, now that shows attention to customer preferences, cant praise this family run business enough desrve to prosper in dalbeattie

Extremely disappointed, £48 and we hardly ate a drop, beef satay, the sauce was watered down version of sweet and sour sauce, the sweet and sour sauce was so vinegary it wasn’t edible and the munchy box was not what was described. definitely wouldn’t recommend or ever try again!!!!!

What a little gem of a restaurant been going to Dalbeattie for over 30 years and never knew it was there. From the moment we walked through the door we were made to feel at home and a valued customer,the service and food was all 5star it was all faultless!!! We were so impressed that we went back the following night for a takeaway again another wonderful meal If you are in the area definitely go find this place you will not be disappointed

Picked up a takeaway this evening. Served by David Ho and cooked by son Colin this was a triumph of a meal at home. The chicken and asparagus in a Chiew Yien sauce has been my favourite for years. Tonight was no exception. All round the table with very different main courses there was a general agreement that this was a superb meal. Many thanks Colin, David and your team of helpers.

We went to this restaurant as a total fluke as we weren’t able to get booked anywhere else in the area. And honestly, we were so, so glad we ended up here! The food was amazing, one of the best chinese meals I’ve ever had. The chiew yien ribs were the best ribs I’ve ever had without a doubt! On top of the amazing food, the staff were so friendly and welcoming, especially with our noisy toddler. Total little gem. Will be back without a doubt! Thank you for having us!

We ate here as a family of 4 whilst on holiday, my wife has a gluten free diet and she could not have been better catered for, both my daughters described it as one of the best Chinese meals they have ever eaten and we haven eaten a lot. Service was attentive and speedy and the food was delicious and perfect sized portions. We enjoyed that much that returned later in the week for a takeaway meal which again was ready very quickly and tasted very good. A must visit if in the area especially if gluten intolerant.

We ate inside the restaurant and we loved it. They were very helpful with gluten-free. The food was very tasty and good service. My only complaint is the drinks.

We asked the staff for some allergy advice for my wife and the chef came out to discuss. Had a great conversation, and adapted one of their dishes to suit her. Assured us that her dish would be prepared separately to avoid cross contamination. Her Salt & Pepper Seafood, and my Fried Beef with Chilli & Pepper Sauce were genuinely the nicest Chinese meals either of us have eaten. So friendly and helpful, cannot recommend highly enough.

Got a takeaway whilst staying in Dalbeattie for a week. King Prawn toast tasted amazing and my husbands mixed veg with curry sauce was good, but my main was tasteless and the prawn crackers were too. Lady who took our order was friendly & lovely....

Visited this amazing restaurant with friends whilst down in Dalbeattie. From the minute that you walk in the door you are welcomed by the friendly staff and they were friendly throughout my time in the restaurant . I had chips and curry sauce and what can I say apart from WOW. They were the best chips and curry sauce that I’ve ever had. Will definitely visit when I’m next down in Dalbeattie

Don’t usually write reviews about takeaways, but we have been coming to Kippford annually for 10 years, there is a menu where we stay for this place, and also a comment written about the locals opinion of it, which up until tonight has caused us never to order. Well I can safely say with regret we have been missing out on a treat. We collected a menu, ordered 4 main dishes over the phone. 2 were special orders i.e, battered and sauce separate. It came with complementary wontons. The gentleman explained how it had been cooked, they really wanted to please and were very friendly. The meal far exceeded expectations and there were 4 very empty plates.Never before have I considered phoning to say we have thoroughly enjoyed a take out but I would on this occasion, hence me note on trip advisor. Note: never take others opinion, try for yourself and take it from there! We will definitely return, and have commented on the menu how enjoyable the food was.

Always a warm welcome at the Sea Horse, and the food is always excellent. When we're back in Dalbeattie, we'll be eating Chinese again. Monday night our meal was specially prepared for us, complete with a trial plate of something different for my not-so-adventurous husband. Lovely food, the family who run the restaurant are friendly, helpful and genuine. Highly recommended. Don't be fooled by the exterior of the restaurant - go in - prepare to be amazed. You won't be disappointed. I went in not knowing what I wanted to eat, I allowed the Chef to recommend something - and I'm glad I did - absolutely fabulous meal!

We came here with our 4 children whilst on holiday in the area and it was really lovely. It looks like a takeaway from the outside but just inside is a cosy restaurant and the staff were so friendly, they made us feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble. They were really nice with the children and very accommodating. The food was very nice, good portions and high quality. Must admit we had seen a poor review alongside the really good ones and we are pleased to say that we were impressed and would definitely recommend this restaurant.

Visited on Friday evening following recommendation. Looks like a take away from outside and not the most attractive looking place but the food was lovely and the staff were so friendly and helpful.Highly recommended and glad it was recommended to us. We will return next time we are visiting.

My husband and I came across this Chinese takeaway while camping in the area. After a very rainy day we decided to comfort ourselves with some Chinese food. We were welcomed by a lady who was very friendly and gave our kids lollies and offered us a coffee while we waited for our food. We ordered the vegetarian Singapore chow mein and king prawns in chilli sauce. Both were very good. I particularly enjoyed the chow mein - a good level of spice with lots of nice big chunky vegetables - mange tout, broccoli, cashew nuts and more. My husband particularly enjoyed the prawns as they were spicy and the sauce was very yummy! I would recommend this Chinese to anyone.

This is THE WORST Chinese? Takeaway meal I’ve ever had in my 60 years on this planet. Our chicken in our breast of chicken curry was not defeosted properly not to mention the ridiculous attempt at a curry sauce, which was a poor mixture of oil and paste ( disgusting). The black bean dishes were of a similar quality and lack off taste. My phone call complaint received an explanation of similar quality. A total disgrace. Never again.

Reasonable priced carry out with tasty, good size portions. Was even offered a cup of coffee while I waited for my order.

We were staying local and decided to just go for a takeaway, heard there was a Chinese nearby. I couldn’t find a menu online so decided to wing it and go. We ordered, prawn fried rice, satay chicken, lemon chicken, spring rolls, banana fritters and prawn crackers. The staff were really friendly and chatty from the moment we went in, we ordered our food and decided to sit and wait for it. Good job we did because it was the fastest Chinese ever, we waited about 5mins!! They also gave us some free wantons.

Doesn't look much from the outside but the food was lovely. We ordered a takeaway and I was pleasantly surprised. Highly recommended the sesame prawn on toast. They were served with a small salad Inc melon balls which I thought odd at first but really worked. I then had beef and cashew nuts, bit too much peas in it for my liking but there was plenty of beef and cashew nuts. I had half rice half chips and enjoyed the meal. Would definitely go back. The chef was also friendly and smiled to us both and told us to have. A lovely evening and enjoy our meal, which was a nice touch.

We always visit this friendly wee Chinese Restaurant when holidaying on the Colvend Coast, and never fail to be impressed by the quality of the food. Great that they offer something different from most takeaways - we have enjoyed Chicken Stuffed with Prawns and Crispy Aromatic Pork ( like Chinese Pulled Pork ) served here years before pulled pork became fashionable. On this trip we deliberated over several options on the Seafood menu, but chose Seafood with Seasonal Greens - a mix of King Prawns, prawns and sole, with a garlic laced sauce and broccoli, water chestnuts, bamboo shoots, carrot. Lovely. The Roast Duck with Chinese Roast Pork ( Char Sui ) was also nicely presented- the pork was impressively tender, and flavours well balanced. Spicy Vegetable Noodles ( deceptively hot and almost peppery ) completed the meal. This restaurant has never disappointed, and we've been visiting for the last 20 years or so.

Like others we were staying in the local area and fancied a Chinese. We got a great welcome from the owner who is very proud of his son chef. He bent over backwards for us and was a great host but the food wasn’t as great as the service. It arrived within 5 minutes which is a worry but some dishes were good. The fried rice was good and so was the battered chicken and giant pancake roll but the rest wasn’t good but not terrible (satay was over powdered and Singapore noodles not good). It’s hard to not give them more as the owner is great and service super quick but the food was just not the standard we are used to and it’s quite expensive.

Was meant to go for a meal at this place on the Sunday evening with family but as in a small town there isn't a lot of choice of takeaway so we decided to have one on the Friday from here as a little taster for the Sunday. I have to say I am glad to only have spent a little money on the take away as the food was awful I wouldn't feed my dog the food they gave us.

We were recommended this restaurant by the cottage owners where we were staying. One of the best welcomes ever the chef the owner all came to chat with us. The food was very fresh,hot and tasty. Well worth a trip or a take away.

I’ve been coming up to Dalbeattie for almost 20 years, we stay for one or two nights every few months, always eat out and never knew this restaurant existed. We stumbled across it, while browsing the internet looking for somewhere to eat out this Remembrance Day weekend. From the outside it looks just like a takeaway, but once inside the resemblance ends. Staff are delightful and service is excellent, my husband had his usual sweet and sour chicken with boiled rice, I had king prawn chow mein. Huge portions, and extremely delicious, what more could anyone ask for, and well under what we would pay back home in Manchester. It’s so good that tomorrow we’ll be going back for our evening meal. Wonder if they’ll consider delivering to Manchester, I guess we might have to return sooner than planned. This place should be on the recommended list of every guest house, or B and B in Dalbeattie. Highly recommended, thank you to the staff for a lovely evening.

We ate here on a quiet Monday night but what can I say food was excellent. The restaurant is deceiving its through the back of a takeaway but when you go in it's never been decorated in years very dated but look beyond that and food and service exceptional.

We're on holiday in Kippford for a week and decided to treat ourselves to a takeaway. Was so good we had another one at the of the week!! Prices are really reasonable, Our food was prepared quickly and the family who own it were so friendly.They certainly don't hold back on the portions, I had the king prawn curry and the prawns we're cooked perfectly - yummy. My hubby had the chicken chow main and there was masses of it.Just so you don't miss it, its a couple of doors up from the Nisa supermarket Only problem it that it's a long way to travel from Yorkshire to Scotland to get the best Chinese we've had :-((

Nearly missed this place as it's hidden away in a corner.The lovely staff were amazing and told us they could make almost every dish vegan, and they did.The food and service were great and they even gave us a little box of Chinese tea to takeaway after we mentioned how nice it was.Hoping to visit again shortly

Gorgeous food. Friendly staff and at a reasonable price. We ate in the restaurant this time. 3 adults 3 kids. Staff were great and tailored meals to fit my fussy eater kids which was brilliant. Portion sizes are big and none of use could clean are plates! Overall cost of our meals and drinks came to £67.00 and was worth every penny! I'm a big lover of Chinese food and tried my fair share of restaurants but this is by far the best. Would defo be returning here on my next visit to Scotland.

3 of us really enjoyed our meal, but husbands starters and main weren't great.THAT SAID....... Definitely look past the scruffy decor of the takeaway that you have to walk through to get to the restaurant, as I think it's worth a visit

What a hidden gem of a Chinese Restaurant. We also missed this place, thank goodness we didn't. The service was excellent with help to order and explain what each dish was. We chose the fixed menu for 2 people and it was excellent. If you go to Dalbeattie you have to eat here.

The Sea Horse offers excellent and freshly prepared Chinese food both in their restaurant and available for carry out. Highly recommended.

Visited here on Friday 15th July for dinner with our 3 children including 3 month old baby. Staff were very welcoming and not phased at all when our youngest was a bit unsettled during the meal. Portions were good size and everything was really fresh and delicious. Great value for a lovely meal. Will definitely return when next in the area.

Saw this place as we walked through Dalbeattie, it doesn't look great from the outside but the reviews on tripadvisor made me think it was worth a try as we really fancied a chinese. The spring roll starter was more like the size of a pasty absolutely huge and packed with lots of different types of veg - it was delicious, and prevented filling up on pastry. I'm fairly boring with my Chinese choices so I always have the curry, this time beef - it was yummy, not oily or fatty in any way and actually had a kick to it which was great and was filled with beef. It was a huge portion but I managed to eat it all as it was so good! They also gave us a free starter of stuffed mushrooms which was a great surprise. Although it is unlikely I'll be in the area again, I would happily get a takeaway again, I just wish it was closer to home as our local Chinese is useless compared to this one!

Three of us decided to go out last minute for dinner - we have lived in Kippford for 3 years but had not really realised this little place was here! From the exterior you might walk past but don't! Though the decor may be tired the food and service was excellent. Really friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The chef even came out to check everything was ok with our meal. We had a couple of king prawn dishes - the prawns were excellent really big and juicy. We had the squid too which was well cooked (not rubbery!) and the spicing for us was perfect. The beef dish we had was very tasty and generous too. After our meal we were given a complimentary plate of fruit which was lovely. We drank the Chinese beer which was good and the meal was very reasonably priced. They also offer takeaway so now we know about them we will definitely be back.

Friendly little restaurant with a takeaway facility,if you look past the décor and furnishings the menu and food are great! the staff and proprietors are lovely and can't do enough for you we have been eating here now for over 15 years and the proofs in the pudding as they say ,we keep returning!

Back here again. What a treat. We tried two different dishes, both of which were excellent - Chilli/garlic deep-fried chicken, and singapore noodles. And as usual a lovely welcome and the sense that you're really part of the family. This place makes me very happy indeed.

Had to be the worse Chinese meal ever, I mean it was swimming in grease. I know most of it is fried or deep fried but I found this almost inedible. I normally love spare ribs, but without BBQ sauce they were not great, I think even they were deep fried. I would not go there again.

Love the Sea Horse, whether its takeaway or my favourite sit in option...if its something you'd like to tweak on the menu nothing is too much trouble. Service is perfect and the prices are great.

My partner is originally from Dalbeattie and the Sea Horse is his favourite takeaway ever,especially the chicken,chilli and garlic dish. I am more of a sweet and sour chicken balls kinda girl,and it never disappoints.

The outside of the Sea Horse restaurant is a little run down but the food is excellent. We had a lovely takeaway and the portions were very generous.

Great Staff and food, cooked nice and fresh by a local lovely chinese family. David Ho is so welcoming and his son will add that little bit of garlic, ginger or whatever you want to get your dish exactly as you like it. Some of the meals were ok, but the noodles were lukewarm and prawn crackers were awful. was disappointing considering in total we spent £42.

We've already bought takeaway food from the Sea Horse which we greatly enjoyed, so we were delighted to be invited out this evening and discover the restaurant behind the takeaway. Owner David Ho looked after us extremely well - we were extra lucky to be in the company of one of his Chinese friends. He readily made changes to the menu to incorporate the fact that one of our group didn't eat pork and two of us wanted an extra helping of squid - he ended up bringing us a huge sharing platter which was delicious and contained a great mixture. We then had egg fried rice and another selection of dishes to share including a beef dish, prawns and a special chicken dish. All were beautifully cooked and very tasty. He kindly presented us with a sharing platter of fresh fruit including a beautifully carved apple swan then, when he learnt one of our party was due to celebrate his birthday tomorrow, he produced another plate with more fruit and a piece of cake with a candle in it! The Birthday Boy (my husband!) was then also presented with a glass of brandy, compliments of the Sea Horse - an unbelievable show of hospitality which we very much appreciated. Can't praise the food or the service highly enough and we'll certainly visit again.

My wife and friends went here and as we live local there was not much choice, firstly the food from the take away is bad, we used to wonder why we only attended when on a night out. "Drink". It is either tasteless or over powered with sauces. But the main reason for this poor review is that my wife, whilst eatin hers found a rather sizeable piece of a scouring pad. Which is a metal wire. If she had swallowed it it would have been a hospital job. Now the staff are friendly and the sit in restaurant was always spot on. It was like 2 different establishments to be honest. One you would visit and one you wouldnt. But im afraid possible throat surgery has lost my custom

Really lovely food. We make a point of going every time we are in the area. The staff are friendly and give advice on dishes should you feel like trying something different as it can be all too easy to stick to your old favourite. Doesn't look much from the outside but don't be fooled by that its well worth a visit so give it a go.

On a recent trip to Scotland visited the Sea Horse for an evening meal.The food was fresh and tasty, no artificial after taste,excellent quality ingredients. The staff were pleasant and woul definitely return.

We had a takeaway from here on Saturday night and sorely regretted it. If we had lived closer we'd have taken it back, but as it was it went straight into the bin and we resolved not to go back. The food was bland, lacked any kind of taste at all, the meat was tough, (even the dogs turned their noses up.) Finding a hair mixed in with the noodles was game over for me. What a complete waste of money.

It has to be said - it's unprepossessing. If it's glam you want, you might think twice. The first time we went, we were unaware that there even WAS a restaurant - from the street it looks like your standard takeaway . But if you go in, there's a door to the right where you step into a different world! It's not ultra-modern, but it's charming and (a) the staff are really friendly and welcoming and (b) all the customers seem to be having a really, really good time. It's like being let in on a great secret. And then the second time we went (we've been several times since), we felt like family. The waiter remembered us and what drinks we'd ordered last time around. It's no big deal but it's just NICE when that happens. Makes you smile. And the food is BRILLIANT. I guess it's pretty standard Chinese restaurant fare but it's well cooked, nicely presented and hyper-tasty. Favourites? The battered chilli squid; the char su noodles; the crispy wontons, the chilli ribs. (Just writing this makes me hungry!)Beware - the portions are big. We grossly over-ordered the first time around and, gluttons that we are, we ate everything. We've been more restrained since - but you don't go home hungry. Determined to try other dishes next time around - there are some interesting looking things, but we keep going back to the favourites.We love this place. Love it.

Come up to these parts biking twice a year and always make at least one visit to the seahorse! Staff are friendly, the food is always very tasty and its well priced to say its the only Chinese for many a mile. I like that you can see into the kitchen from the takeaway part because you can clearly see that its clean and tidy in there. Highly recommended!

Had a carry-out from the Sea Horse one night - very good portion size - it did us two nights!! Very good value for money and very tasty.

Havin Read the positive reviews, we decided to give this a go while we were up in Dalbeattie. Well what a disappointment ! We went for the take out option, soup had no seasoning and was extremely thin, mixed appetisers were extremely greasy, and chicken with pickled ginger and pineapple with fried rice..... we had a little bit, the rest went into the bin. Whether the chef was having an off night or someone has snuck in during the night and stolen our taste buds! It was a truly awful meal and a complete waste of £20. I will not be going there again.

We had a carry out but there is a sit-in also.The staff were very friendly and genuine.The food was keenly priced and had a reasonable range to choose from. It's not haute cuisine but it's not bad either.We've been coming for carry-outs over many years when we are on holiday and never had a bad meal.
