Scarpetta in Tower Hamlets

I’m a local CW resident of many years- never tried Scarpetta. After work drinks in town I came in here with my husband on Thursday 26th Sept 2024, needing the loo but intending to eat for the first time, despite the mixed reputation. There was no staff to greet & seat, but there was a chef behind the counter, looking grumpily at us. There were only two tables dining, and plenty of empty seats. I asked straight away “where’s the loo” as it my first priority. The chef responded “are you dining?”. I said, “well, isn’t it important to be kind? I won’t stay if you’re not!”. The chef responded, “Get out!”. He actually told us to get out ! I could not believe how rude the staff are here. It’s a disgusting show of poor customer service the way “Scarpetta” treat their customers. My husband and I might have become regular customers, but instead, we will never dine here in a million years. Avoid this place. To me, it’s a disgrace.

This week marks their 10th Anniversary and free pasta offers. 2 weeks ago I downloaded the app and decided to pop in for the pasta. On arrival (today at 11.50am) the female assistant smirked at me and when I smiled and asked for the free pasta to the male server, she interjected and said sorry it is not available unless you downloaded the app! She was abrupt and unhelpful when I suggested that she helped me to navigate the app on my phone. She duly went to check with a senior, and returned saying ' if you didn't register before today, then you cannot claim.'. No apology, no trying to help a customer, just basically 'shutting me down'. I have frequented Scarpetta many times for a manager that I assist at a leading investment bank, and we will be moving our custom elsewhere. The pasta is tasty, albeit overpriced, but the restaurant falls down with its dire service. A real shame. I gave it two stars as the food is NOT terrible.

Went there for a business dinner with my colleagues. We were properly welcomed and well taken care of during the entire dinner. Food was very good and tasty. Nice atmosphere as well.

Just two of us for dinner. My gf pasta was ok but covered in some beef flavoured sauce. Other pasta dish was straight forward . Wine at £12.50 for a medium glass of wine is an outrage. Empty on a Wednesday night speaks for itself

This is a great neighbourhood restaurant. The pasta is always excellent, fresh with simple well prepared sauces. The staff are super friendly and even when it’s packed they do their absolute best to make sure everyone is happy. Lovely relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend for good bowl of pasta at really reasonable price.

Not impressed. Be aware of the Tuna Tartare dish - the sauce tastes very strongly of anchovies, which I guess is OK if you really like anchovy. And you would have to really like anchovy to enjoy this. Unfortunately there was absolutely no mention of the anchovy in the description on the menu so one was unable to make an informed choice. The menu is small, so I would expect everything to be done very well - the other meals my party had were very average. Both the ladies and gents were not working which left the entire restaurant to use the only disabled toilet. For whatever reason someone had left it in a bad way and it seems the staff hadn't realised. I would expect it to be checked even more frequently if its the only available toilet. To be fair when I raised it, the staff set about cleaning immediately, but suffice to say we shouldn't have been in that situation. Should they have been open? The bill got readjusted, but I definitely wouldn't return - there are lots of lovely restaurants in London to choose from.

Cadre très sympa, très joli, ambiance tamisé, au cœur des building ... très agréable. Repas, très bon. Tout est fait maison. Par contre c'est excessivement cher pour le peu de quantité. Si vous avez faim, passez votre chemin. Nous sommes sortie de là en ayant toujours aussi faim. Si vous comptez sur le dessert pour vous rassasiez, prévoyez 10€ de plus par personne. Ne vous attendez pas à avoir du pain ou autre. Je pense que ça ne fait pas partie de la culture Anglaise. Pour ma part je ni retournerai pas. 20€ pour une toute petite assiettes de pâtes (très bonnes tout de même) non merci !

Amazing experience and fantastic food. Well looked after my Christian. The food and the wine is sublime... massively recommended.

Can even comment as we never even got to experience the food as when we got there the waitress said they were apparently closed for lunch at 3pm and won’t be opening back up until 5pm when there was other people in the restaurant eating, they clearly just didn’t want us in their restaurant

Have been here twice now, returning shortly after our first visit! So impressed with the food. Love the fresh pasta, the service and the delicious Nutella gnocchi! Would definitely recommend!

Delicious, authentic Italian pasta. There was an eclectic, fun ambiance and service was great. Waiting time was short, and there was a wide variety of side dishes as well. It’s a modern looking, clean restaurant with great music. Soft touch.

I don’t understand all the negative reviews about this place. I went for lunch on a Monday and it was a great experience, service and food was excellent. The pasta was cooked to perfection and accompanied by very tasty sauces. People need to understand that this is not a fine dining, fancy restaurant. The boxes are made of recyclable cardboard that are meant to be taken to work, or eaten at the restaurant. If it was made of plastic there would be negative reviews about that too. The prices are very reasonable and the coffee was excellent too.

Very poor service and overpriced, unfortunately didn't spot these other reviews before going here. Dish missing ingredients and waiter uninterested in helping and rude.

I’m surprised to see the negative reviews for this place. My friends and I had a great time here! The service was a little slow but it was bt something that bothered us a lot since we wanted a relaxed evening anyway

I have worked in the restaurant at trade for 15 years and it is a shame when poor service ruins a meal. Things can go wrong and as customers we can understand, IF staff talk to us. We were sat in the middle of a set of three tables, inches from the table next to us. Very cosy, but I'd never met these people before and there was a nice table on the other side of us that wasn't filled all night! The waitress couldn't care less about us. Rarely made eye contact and was irritated that we took longer than we should have to order. We had to chase the food twice. Several tables sat after us, got their food before us. Halfway through the wait a member of kitchen staff used the fire-exit to leave through and left it open, to be closed by one of the customers who also felt the cold draft it caused. The drinks order was also forgotten and had to be cancelled as my partner was running the marathon the next day and we needed to head home. It was only for this reason I didn't say anything on the night. The food when it arrived, was reasonable but it doesn't take 30 minutes for bruschetta. The quality of the pasta was good but very little sauce. I would not return here as it seemed the typical "too cool for you peasants" London restaurants that gives the capital and it's eateries a bad name. Especially when they realise the mistake, but still add the service charge to the bill. Very poor!

Terrible service, and when we complained, the manager was extremely rude. Will not be revisiting, and thankfully, there are lots more venues in Canary Wharf to use.

To be honest we were bit surprised with no Pizza on the menu as we just thought it’s an Italian restaurant and pizza will do for kids! In the end, pasta turned out to be too good with good service and ambiance.

Overall experience was very disappointing. Came with my partner to have a lunch. Were greeted by lady, who was supervisor I assume as didn’t have uniform as waiters. She took the order. We’ve ordered starter and mains. After we were done with starters, spent around 15-20 min waiting for main and had to call for waiter to clarify how long is to wait for mains. He approached us saying that someone closed our tab, he has no clue who, and asked what we ordered. We repeated order although it wasn’t pleasant moment as no one even came to clarify if we were expecting more food . Waiter promised that pasta will be ready in 5 mins. However it took up to 15 minutes to be served. Plus, my order came incorrect, which means both of us had to wait again. Finally my main dish arrived 15 minutes after , which means food of my partner was cold as he didn’t want to eat while I would wait . And all this time place wasn’t even stuffed with guests, were 4 tables in there! I’ve ordered Cacio e Pepe and it tasted quite dry, so fish I’ve been waiting for didn’t even worth it 🤦‍♀️ My partner also ordered gnocchi with Nutella. Portions were quite small as well although prices are not low. After we’ve asked for the bill , it came with wrong balance due, was showing much less money we should pay. We call again for waiter asking to adjust the bill . After another 7 minutes supervisor came with card machine and right bill asking how was the experience. When we shared all issues we’ve had she amazingly said that had no clue about that. That means there is no communication between the team at all and no one even cares about guests experience. I’ve asked to remove service charge as service wasn’t provided at all. Supervisor asked why do I want to do remove it and I had to explain again that I don’t want to pay for the service which I did get provided. Her reply was : “ Okay, got it”. No apologies, not even a small discount or cup of coffee offered to compensate a bit guest experience. So there we go: had to spend around couple of hours because of the several issues within the team , food wasn’t even delicious to recover it , portions are quite small and prices are not cheap at all. I’ve been working in hospitality for 10 years and this case of experience is one of the worst. Definitely won’t come again. Definitely won’t recommend any of our friends or guests as working in a big hotel close by

Maybe it was a Monday lunchtime thing but this odd, slightly gloomy, but rather strangely self-satisfied hybrid takeaway/restaurant just didn't work out. We decided to have some pasta. It was dispensed by a disinterested server in to a cardboard box and looked like it had been made by a primary school child. So basic. £9 for a pretty modest box of twisty pasta mixed with a not very tasty pesto sauce.....er what? And then you have to pay for a little plastic pot (recyclable??) of parmesan. Luckily, forks, napkins, chairs and tables are free although you get the feeling that the cold-comfort-styled management team would charge for that too if they could. We didn't find any pepper, maybe that's a cost cutting measure? The pasta might have been intended to be 'al dente' but it was actually just 'hard' And lukewarm. There was an option to buy an airline-style tray 'build your own salad' but the items on offer looked meagre, tired, and scared as they cowered under the lights. To round off this decidedly mediocre experience, the toilets were 65% out of order with a queue formed for the one remaining. The restaurant's website promotes the idea of it being 'artisan Italian' but, having been to Italy, I can confirm that this place didn't deliver on any of the gastronomic passion and creativity that that country is famous for. But it does have rubbish toilets so maybe that's the link (apologies to any readers from Italy). Luckily, you have read this review and will know not to go there.....two stars seems very generous but I'm giving them as I don't like Mondays and perhaps this restaurant was also having an off day. We scarpered after forcing down what we could from our boxed ration of pasta dullness, I suspect you will do the same if you are silly enough to go.

Is it because gratuity of 12.5% is already included, that the serving staff simply cannot be bothered to do their jobs?! It is appalling how matter-of-factly they are about forgetiing their orders or neglecting their guests! No apologies made! Our appetisers arrived later than those of our neighbours who came in after us. The food was cold. No one came to check if we were ok. We waited a while for the bill too. Yes, it is a cheap joint, but they should have Some standards. The beetroot " carpaccio" is a flavourless but super acidic, lowest grade dish.

Gave 1 star because is not possible to rate 0. We work in hotels in the area and definitely will not return nor suggest this to our friends or guests. The service received in this restaurant I've never experienced it anywhere else. Started with the waiter allowing us to seat on a table without set up, did not bring a second menu and only came to ask after seeing we were struggling to read in 2 on 1 menu. Placed our order, arrives the starter and so far all good. We were with starter after 5 minutes and when was almost 1 hour from our order the main still didn't arrive and nobody would approach us even though was obvious that we were waiting. When we call the waiter to ask, he comes to the table and says "I can see you've been waiting for long time, your table has been closed in the system, I don't know why" well we didn't know either, then he took again our mains order. More time past and finally he arrives with the 2 mains and only at the table he realized that 1 is wrong therefore he dropped 1 main and went back with the other. 8 minutes later finally comes with the 2nd main but meanwhile mine was already cold as I wouldn't eat and make my partner watch me eating. After eating, we order dessert which takes another 20 minutes to arrive and when finally is time for the bill, they bring it with many mistakes so the waiter goes back and then brings the correct bill. After mentioning all the above to a lady we believed was a supervisor, and asked to remove service charge, she didn't take any further action to make up for all the mistakes and simply placed on POS machine the amount without service charge. P. S. A couple behind us also had to wait longer for the mains but at least the waiter was kind enough to offer something on the house while they were waiting, and to us?! Nobody gave a damn.

Fabulous! The pasta was served hot and tasted fresh. Staff were friendly. Location very convenient. Juices were healthy.

Went in with a couple work friend's. ordered N'Duja Sausage pasta meal. Pasta really badly undercooked. Could barely chew it. Place to packed and staff to busy in robot mode to complain too.

Just had the Prawn and Zucchini, very disappointing. The Pasta was doughy and under cooked, it just just tasted of flour, which was not nice at all. At least the Prawns were cooked thank god!

Having discovered this through a foodie colleague I am returning often for the delicious home made pasta, cooked exactly as one would in Italy and served with a choice of cheese and the bread to do a proper scarpetta afterwards. The salads look yummy but...
