Sawadee Thai Taste in Stoke-on-Trent

Had a lovely experience here the food was delicious and everything was home cooked by apple. Apple the owner was the sweetest and most amazing host i’ve ever had at a restaurant before she made us feel so at home❤️ Would definitely reccomend to all !!!

A hidden gem in the Stoke culinary desert. Great home-made food cooked while you wait. I don't think the door is always left open, so you may need to knock. It seems to be a one-woman operation, at least both times I have been here. I had deep-dried prawns in tempura with a dip - crunchy and delicious - and a beef curry. This was marked as "very hot" on the menu and it certainly was! The lady told me it was one of her father's favourite dishes and I could tell why. It was bursting with spicy flavours. I like hot food and this was one of the best, though I am sure there are milder choices too. Finally the bill was very reasonable, barely more than a sandwich and a drink would set you back in some places!

Don’t trust the other reviews- I don’t know how this place has a 4.5! We walked into the worst smelling dirtiest restaurant we’ve ever been to. Despite being open, the lady had to come unlock the door for us, which was weird… then we walk in and realized nobody was there, and they have a screen so you can’t tell this from peering in the window. It seemed there was only the one lady there- and about 40 candles lit all across the bar, and all the lights were off/ really low. Very creepy! Combined with the WORST smell, and the dirty menu which appeared to have a cigarette or something put out on it- we decided to leave. Not to mention the creepy séance vibes!

Food was amazing and can the owner, Apple is very welcoming 🤗 Prices are super reasonable. Will definitely be back soon!!

This is the best food we can find in town so far. Traditional Thai flavour with all necessary ingredients. Love it!

Food was good but excellent. I found plastic in rice. The lady who run restaurant was nice and chatty. It is not clean place, lots of dust and dead flies around . No Lightning in bathroom .

I took my Wife and Son there and walked into a freezing cold dark and dingy restaurant, lit only by candles and ambient music from Radio Stoke! My Wife is Thai and my Son is Half Thai and I lived in Thailand for 18 years, so we know quite a bit about Thai food, culture, the language and the restaurant trade. Upon seeing my Wife the owner came over and began telling us her life story, it seemed like she had a lot to get off her chest! At one point the owner told us about the passing of her elderly Father recently, the conversation ended with a large framed photo of her departed Father standing up on table in the empty space opposite my Wife. I guess the owner wanted her Father to join in but we thought was a weird thing to do. During this conversation my night vision eyes got used to the darkness and I noticed how cluttered the place was. Books and boxes on most of the other dining tables. I decided to visit the bathroom, as this is normally a good pointer on how clean the kitchen was .I wont go into detail however it wasn't good. The floor was that greasy my feet were sliding apart whilst washing my hands. Being polite, we decided not to eat in and asked the owner to make the food to take away. Which caused her some issues as she didn't want us to leave. I made up a story that I had some business colleagues in town to meet and needed to get gone. " Eventually" we managed to get out of there but were followed outside to the street. The owner suggested that I come back with my 'phantom business colleagues' and she could give them a massage up stairs!. Jaw dropping moment!!! BTW the food went in the bin and we went for a curry which was terrible too. Expensive awful night out.

I booked a table 3 weeks ago for myself and 2 friends. Arrived to find another couple standing outside and the restaurant closed ! We rang the number and the owner came out asking if we had booked. She was very confused and flustered. She said we could go in as we had booked but the other couple couldn't as they hadn't booked. Obviously we declined as there was nothing prepped and we would be the only customers there. I suggest you ring before turning up. Not pleased at all

Great service from Apple who cooks and serves and does everything herself. Food was great and cheap too and quality was great. apple being friendly and kind made the experience fantastic and a night to remember

Appalling..musty cold dingy ..luke warm food..no atmosphere. Heating not on just a halogen heater..Only candles . We were the only customers..now I know why..health and safety nightmare..kitchen needs inspecting and a hair in the batter..service slow..Owner didn't care!

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal last night. Apple is a lovely host who never stops! Don’t expect rapid fire service as (on a Monday night at least) she’s doing everything by herself including cooking all meals from scratch, you can hear her making up the pastes fresh in the kitchen! She topped up our drinks for free as she was busy serving another table. All of the food tasted amazing, generous portions packed full of tender meat and lots of veg. Highly recommend the crispy noodles on the side. Also very reasonably priced for the amount/ quality of the food. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area and want good food at a relaxed pace.

Delicious food, excellent host, wonderful atmosphere! My mum and I visited when I was sitting an important exam in that area, and we came there to unwind in between the exam days, and we had no regrets! The food was probably the best Thai food we ever had, and Apple, the host, was so attentive, sweet and funny. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it to anyone!

Awful food. Although we've had Thai food on more than one occasion, didn't enjoy the food. Service was terrible - complained about it and we were met with hostile attitude! Never again!

This is the best Thai restaurant outside of Thailand!! Food is fabulous and freshly prepared to order. You will always get a warm welcome- just need to book in advance. You actually feel like you’re back on holiday reminiscing beautiful memories.

main phone line does not work, website message was left unanswered, called in to enquire about a table, the venue was a third full but the proprietor stated they was fully booked, she offered us a 35% discount to.come back the day after then very rudely pushed us out of the door, and I do.mean forcefully. I cannot bring myself to give this venue a second chance. 2 stars as i could not rate the food....0 stars for service.

I know you are supposed to add a photo in a review but we had eaten the food before I remembered. That fishcakes, spare ribs, then a mild green curry because we decided not to have a hot curry this time.

My husband and I came here for a quiet meal for our anniversary last week. We've been several times before and although the decor is a little dated, we have always found the food to be delicious. It was a quiet Tuesday and we were the only eat-in customers. Nothing was too much trouble for Apple, the proprietress. We ordered starters and main courses. The portion sizes were extremely generous and the flavours were lovely. We have been a handful of times before (although not for over 18 months) and know there will be a small wait for the food as Apple does everything herself. Apple treated us as personal guests and came to our table for a chat when we had finished our meal. She even gave us a bottle to take home as a present when she discovered it was our anniversary! If you like Thai food in a relaxed atmosphere, then you wont be disappointed

Bought a takeaway from there last night. The lady was very friendly but the food was the worst Thai food I've ever ate. The chips were blatantly chip shop chips and must have been stored and reheated. The Thai green curry wasn't nice at all and looked very unappetising. No spice and not like any Thai curry I've ever had, very watery and full of cauliflower and other veg and was thrown immediately in the bin after tasting. The Thai Red curry was slightly better but again very watery and lacking in flavour and pork was overcooked. The only thing that was decent was the sticky rice. Really disappointed.

We were told about this place by a friend and it does not disappoint. Obviously due to lockdown it’s takeaway only but the food was amazing. The chilli sauce that accompanies the fish cakes is just unreal. And the tamarind duck 😍. Will definitely return for a sit down meal when we can. Thank you Apple 🙏🏼

Visiting from down south, and fancied something different! This place did not disappoint! Food was amazing, and the portions are huge! And The owner is fantastic! So welcoming, and such an incredible host/chef! She, her food and her Beautiful restaurant absolutely made our day! Couldn't recommend enough!

Very homemade like food in great portion. Tom Yum is double or even triple the size we had in London and taste much better with 3-4 gigantic prawns. Very generous and enthusiastic boss always gives us a warmth smile / laugh and shared her own stories.

Having spent a lot of time in Thailand travelling I must admit I was left disappointed. The lady Apple sounded very friendly when we booked but was less interested once we were in the restaurant, the other lady was very friendly, but her English wasn't 100%. We started with Chicken Tom Kha soup and two portions of Chicken Sate. The Tom Kha soup was missing real flavour, unfortunately a little bit to watery for my liking, the Sate was nice however. The Mains unfortunately were a big let down, we had the Chicken Thai Red and Massaman Curry did not taste like Massaman and the Thai Red missed that spice you would expect. The noodles with my mains was quite nice but the coconut rice did not taste of coconut. Quite disappointed I must admit, we went based on the reviews, but not authentic Thai food.

This place is tucked away in a side street in Stoke. Run single handely by the lady. Really good value for money, quite a few complementary extras which was a nice touch. Will be back!

The food was very nice tasting indeed. All is cooked from scratch so there is a delay between being served but the taste of the food was well worth the wait. The lady owner is lovely and certainly special and we loved it all.

Little piece of Thailand in Stoke. Great authentic food and service. Apple the restraurant owner cooks to order so everything freshly cooked and she will adapt the chilli in food to your own taste. Great value for money too, her English is a bit sketchy, she is a real eccentric but wonderful warm lady. A must visit if you like Thai food

Genuinely the best Thai Restaurant I've been to since Thailand 3 years ago. (I eat a lot of Thai food) Apple the owner is lovely, welcoming and an excellent hostess.

Called them to ask if they're open (it was 1:37 am on a Friday) as the hours are not shown on here. The woman was screaming and didn't even answer my question, than hanged up. I never ate here, and after this never will, shame because the food looks lovely. Their loss not mine.

This restaurant is a little gem. The food is excellent and made from scratch. Therefore, your wait can be a little longer but I can assure you that it's well worth the wait. My partner and I visit regularly and are working our way through the menu and each meal is of generous portion size and tasty. Very good value for money. Apple, the owner and cook is very generous and ensures her clients are well looked after. The restaurant is very quirky and atmospheric.

Lovely place. Artisan like with it's parochial Thai taste. Thai food tastes just as in the home nation! Not too keen on the Fish Cakes but the rest of the food is the right kinda ' Tastee. We had the Tom Yum and Tom Kha seafood soups with a hint of ginger and freshens the palate. Mixed sharing platter plenty followed byPrawn red curry and Pad Thai. Delicate flavours.

With generous portions and a friendly hostess why wouldn't we go back again? The food is always good and it's inexpensive. Worth a visit if you want a tasty Thai meal.

My husband and I visited here spontanously. As we both love Thai and this was superb. Apple the owner was a fantastic hostess and Chef! She did it all, she even entertained. She was warm and welcoming and her food was absolutely delicious. We had Tempura King Prawn and Chicken Satay to start followed by, Thai Green, Massaman curry and a pad thai. All was hot fresh and full of flavour. It was quiet but that was fine as we had the place to ourselves it was softly lit with candles and felt very romantic. We will definitely be returning for the fab food and good company from Apple. Would highly recommend.

We had the place to ourselves as it was a quiet evening but that was fine as it felt intimate and special. Her food was superb. Tempura King Prawns were fab! Everything was fresh, hot and tasty. Great authentic Thai food and wonderful friendly staff.

It Saturday night and I fancied Thai food, but I didn't feel like going out so I ordered pork and pakchoi with egg fried rice and noodles. It's a tasty alternative to a thai red or green curry. The food was delicious, and I've decided to go back and have a proper meal there next week.

Our first visit to Sawadee but certainly wont be our last, tucked away on Hill St in Stoke town centre it certainly deserves to be even more heavily visited. Apple the friendly and enthisiastic hostess couldn't do enough for us with the mixed starter tasty and a very ample portion size, we followed this with a red curry and a king prawn dish fragrant with galangal and veg with coconut rice. We left very full and very satisfied, we will be going back and spreading the word with our friends and family.

Incredibly slow service. We waited far too long for the order to be taken and then it was wrong. We’d ordered one portion of one dish, but were charged for 2. It was dealt with but I think the owner was a little stressed- even though there was only one or two other customers in.

Fantastic place to eat, I’ve visited Sawadee on numerous occasions over the years. It’s unique and the owner apple is very quirky, each trip has been an experience. Apple is very friendly and welcoming, she always makes an effort to make you feel special. The restaurant is cosy with a small bar, The food is lovely, full of flavour and the portion sizes are good too. If you’re looking for one of those mainstream Thai restaurants that tastes more like Chinese then this isn’t the place for you however if you want authentic Thai food and a really good night then you’ll love it here. Apple is full of stories from her homeland and has such a lovely, bubbly, funny personality. She really knows how to turn a meal out into an experience.

You know when you go back to a restaurant and you have the same thing each time because its so good? I actually tried something different this time. I had Thai fish cakes as a starter (we usually have a mixed starter) and then roast duck yellow curry which was very tasty. We also go for the warm and friendly atmosphere and the reasonably priced food!

En muchos tailandeses y otros restaurantes te puedo decir que muchos de los platos de arranque son compradas, especialmente cosas como rollitos de primavera y ganó un montón. Aquí es todo casero y personal están ansiosos por ver que disfrute de su experiencia. Los pasteles de pescado tailandesa fueron las mejores que hemos tenido y mi pollo al curry verde era magnífico. De todos los platos que probamos no había uno que se podría decir que no era de la primera categoría. Nos encantó a todos. El centro de Stoke on Trent no es una zona genial y hay restaurantes más pijos tailandés alrededor pero no con comida de este nivel. Lo sé, he probado todos. Los precios son muy razonables y la comida excelente. Puede guardar todos los sitios falsos templos en ruinas temáticas, vamos por la calidad de la comida.

Si quieres un sabor diferente con un presupuesto razonable Sawadee que ofrece. No es el restaurante tailandés más pijos en el área, pero compensa en carácter. Teníamos entradas de langostinos en pasta y sésamo Semillas y pasteles de pescado y pollo satay tailandés. Entonces mi marido tenía un curry rojo tailandés con pollo y tuve la ensalada picante de comida de mar (no sé su verdadero nombre) con mejillones, calamares, langostinos y cangrejos. Deliciosa, un montón de zumo de limón y lo suficientemente chili. Nos lo pasamos muy bien.

Una pequeña salida del restaurante tailandés fue dirigido por su propietario de Apple. Realmente es el único miembro del personal, así que si vas tener paciencia y esperar fantástico relajarse chat comida tailandesa auténtica. No he comido mejor en el Reino Unido. Si la noche está hecha de amigos y familia disfrutando de compañía entonces saber más. Pruébalo que le sorprenderá y deleitará.

Hidden gem indeed, food was amazing, partner has lived in Thailand and this place has the closest authentic food around here....big portions too! Apple is adorable and a great host. We will definitely go back 😀

We visited Sawadee Thai taste again last night and loved the food, the mixed starter was tasty and well flavoured and the main meals, a duck curry and a beef and vegetable dish were delicious. It's unusual to find a this restaurant away from the city centre but its eell worth a visit and not expensive. The owner cooks all the food and is really enthusiastic.

I'd not been to (Apples, the owners) this place for ages but it's still the same. Proper Thai food made with care and love and from a proper Thai person. Apple is still her Thai self and is as generous and funny as always. Treat this foodie place respect and you will be taken with respect back 100X. I wish students from Staffs Uni would know about this place because there is a hell of a lot of them who would like and appreciate this place.I think they just don't know about this hidden gem of real Thai food of which I like, but you can't keep a good secret too long although I have mentioned Sawadee to many people. after all if you are a Thai food fan and have been to Thailand, this is the place to be Khop Khun Khap!

Just returned from Sawadee Thia Taste. The food wonderfu, authentic ai, sighty different each time which is the beauty of the place. The fish cakes the best I've ever tasted, even in Thailand. Sometimes service you have to have patience because there is only one person there, tonight not the case. If you miss it you have missed a treat. My husband said not to write this as it's our secret!

The owner is very wild and entertaining- the night we were there, she did all the cooking, hosting and serving. The food was quite good and we enjoyed the neighborhood- felt safe despite the gritty location.

This place is a hidden gem of Thai food in stoke as the host did not do much advertising. It's ashamed that not much ppl know bout this place. It's a nice n warm environment and we being served by the host Apple. She is so friendly and so nice to talk to. As for the food, be prepare for a little wait as its being cook upon ordered. We ordered Tom yam soup, green curry, pineapple fried rice n stir fried vegi. And I'll say it worth the wait as all taste delicious... It's a nice place to dine as a couple and it's families friendly too. We will definitely visit this place again, hope to see you soon Apple.

It's been a while since i've been to Sawadee and Apples Coffee shop and it's even better than it's ever been. Lot's more Thai decor and atmosphere and the inspiring lovely host Apple. A friend just rang me last night and said shall we go for a pint? We spent 99% in Sawadee tasting the wonderful food, sipping Singha beers and laughing with Apple. I've said it before, this is the only Thai place i know that's more Thai than Thailand.
