Sawadee Thai Restaurant in Brighton and Hove

At first glance this place doesn't look very grand or upmarket. A warm welcome awaits. The tables were fully booked on Saturday evening except for the one we nabbed! It's always a great indicator when half of the other clients were Thai people! Both of our starters and mains were delicious and served quickly. Highly recommend

Food was amazing and staff were lovely. Food was so fresh and such good quality. Flavours were amazing and it was just such a treat. Can very highly recommend! Would LOVE to come back and eat here!

Service was friendly but very slow. Starters were ok. Chicken Satay was nice, but spring roll sauce had too much garlic. Main courses were really bland - like really average Chinese takeaway. You would never have guessed it was supposed to be Thai food. No condiments supplied - zero spice in any dish. Halfway through the meal we were asked if we wanted any - I asked for some chilli sauce and was brought a tiny ramekin of chillies that smelled off. Overall, one of the most disappointing meals I’ve ever had.

We passed this restaurant on the way back to our hotel and decided to go in for dinner …. not our usual approach … we normally thoroughly check TA first! However, we were very pleased with our choice … the welcome was great … the staff were very friendly and helpful. The food was outstanding and very reasonably priced. We had an excellent evening. We recommended the restaurant to some friends who lived locally and they took their family there and were equally impressed.

We rocked up here late evening and we were warmly welcomed by extremely smiley, polite and friendly staff. The service was quick but at no point were we made to feel rushed (even though we were the last ones in the restaurant) Food was tasty and reasonably priced… I will definitely be visiting again. I would also highly recommend checking out the local Hand in Hand pub a 5 minute walk away - a truly excellent local 😊

Visited for evening meal, without booking but was seated no problem Staff are incredibly fast, polite and efficient. We had Set Menu A and it was superb! The food is fresh, so tasty, piping hot. I cannot fault this restaurant, probably one of the best meals we have eaten in years.

My partner & I went to Brighton for a couple of nights mid-week, staying in an apartment, within walking distance of the Brighton Dome, as we had tickets to see Nitin Sawhney on the second night. So, on the day of the gig we were looking around online for a place to have a late lunch and came across the Sawadee Thai Restaurant, which looked nice and the menu was very appealing, so we booked. We were the first to arrive and were greeted by the friendly owner/manager called Izzet, who showed us to a table in the window and took an order for drinks. The venue has a nice, relaxing vibe and the service was nicely paced, with plenty of good food, which you could tell was freshly cooked. Izzet had times on his hands to have a chat with us and he was very friendly. We had a lovely time there and I felt obliged to write this review, in the hope that it would offer an insight into what it was like and I hope it helps others, reading this this to look up this venue, as I would have no hesitation in recommending it. Thanks you for looking after us Izzet. We'll look you up when we are next in Brighton.

Really dreadful! That’s an understatement! I don’t know if this restaurant has changed hands or they have lost all their chefs, but the food is the most bland and uninspired I have tasted! We ordered a chicken with chilli and cashew, which just tasted like salt, no authentic chilli flavour or Thai or herb taste. There was one token dried chilli in the dish. The sweet and sour was the strangest dish. It felt like someone had taken a tin of tomato juice and just threw in the rest of the ingredients and because it had onion and pineapple they could call it sweet and sour. Each item of food, had its own bland taste and with an overpowering taste of tin and tomato. The chicken was also tough. This really was very poor and very disappointing, looking forward to what I hoped would be an authentic and tasty Thai takeaway! After this experience, it’s back to the Giggling Squid, which in comparison I would have to give them full marks!

A fantastic, authentic restaurant with great ambiance and the most amazing food. A great find and I highly recommend a visit.

Recommended by Blanch House Hotel's room guide and it didn't disappoint. We were warmly greeted and quickly seated and served. The food was authentic, plentiful and delicious. My daughter even said "This is better than the food I had in Thailand". We loved it. The set meals made it easy for all of us to try a variety of dishes. Would return on our next trip to Brighton for sure.

The place was like an oasis to enter as a family coming from a busy street. Staff were so nice and polite. But the food was not great. The spring rolls were the best among the dishes we tried. But none of the dishes were spicy, so the kids could eat everything.

Tonight we went to Sawadee with high expectations but the meal fell well -short The Tom Yum soup lacked any flavour of fresh lime juice, galangal or lemon grass which are just some of the basic ingredients. The soup was bland and before I had even finished it, the plates arrived for the main course. The Massaman Curry arrived but lacked flavour, so no cinnamon, chopped cilanto or lime. This was again, bland. The fragrant jasmine rice lacked " fragrant jasmine" and we suspected it was just overcooked, lumpy plain rice. I could not eat it. On complaining to the waiter, he just grinned and walked away. The waiter looked most unprofessional wearing faded, ripped jeans and really does need to look the part. We will not be returning and would not recommend this place to friends.

We called in here on a whim & and we were both glad we did. The food we had was lovely & we were pleasantly surprised when we got the bill. Definitely our cheapest meal while staying in Brighton. Definitely worth a visit

Popped in for a quick bite - going again tomorrow! I had a beef stir fry (no 2 on the menu) and some sticky rice. The beef was chewy but so enhanced by the fresh ginger, spring onion and coriander it was a wow. Now nowhere in Kemptown is cheap but this was one of the best I’ve had for the price Service was prompt, friendly and all it should be. Quite busy so popular but not over subscribed. Popped in there en route back to my hotel and was pleasantly surprised. I was by myself so had just myself to please. Started off with the salt and peppered squid which I enjoyed followed by a stir fry beef dish and rice which was again quite good. Had a couple of glasses of red wine as well which added to the meal but normally I would have had beer but the choice was not great. The staff were friendly and attentive which helped to make it a pleasant ‘solo’ meal.

Really poor service. Also very slow. 1 3\4 hrs for a 4 person table and it wasn’t even busy. We had to ask for utensils even when our food was served. One of our 4 mains didn’t arrive with the others. Food was mediocre and nothing special.

Sawadee is a lovely little restaurant, great friendly service, a nice atmosphere and delicious food. We had one of the set menus for two - fabulous food, hot, spicy, well-presented and so much of it that we couldn't manage a dessert! Reasonable prices too.

I visited the beautiful Sawadee restaurant located just a five minute walk from the town Centre. We were greeted by the amazing Danny Lee. The food was absolutely incredible but, in a world where face to face service has taken a back seat. Danny managed to make everything seem like it were fine dining 10 years ago. An amazing atmosphere with a superb host.

Proper enjoyable experience - friendly staff and tasty food. Also if you’re into interior design and plants I highly recommend this place, very zen atmosphere. Will deffo come back and try more! P & J x

What a great restaurant: warm, welcoming and spacious with a menu to please anyone who loves Thai food. On a recent visit with a London friend we focused on the scrumptious prawn and seafood dishes. And the Tom Ka in a rich coconut sauce was amazing. The cheerful and attentive service from Danny matched the quality of the food, too. My guest was so impressed that Sawadee is now top of his list when he pays his next visit to Brighton. Fortunately, I won't have to wait that long!

Great food, we had tempura to start, tasty. Followed with coconut rice, pad see ew, massaman curry and papaya salad. It was all absolutely delicious and we loved every mouthful. We also had a delightful pot of jasmine tea which was the perfect accompaniment. This place is totally worth a visit! :-)

Visited last night and honestly one of the best Thai meals I've ever tried.Amazing mussel starter and the beef jungle curry well spiced .The staff were happy to accommodate with the extra chilli paste to suit my palate .A great place for couples to eat and relax.

We went there on Monday night ( August’s Bank Holiday ). Luckily we made a booking, the restaurant was full. We had the green papaya salad ( one of my favourite) I often order that dish when I go to Thai restaurant. It didn’t disappoint me, the papaya salad was so delicious not too spicy. We also had the king prawn green curry and fish red curry. The king prawns were huge and the fish curry was just mouth-watering. Last but not least the service - some ppl left some comments complaining about the service was bad!! The night we were there was extremely busy - full house. The staff worked their socks off all night. I’m going to praise all the staff at that night and one person was so outstanding - Danny was so wonderful and attentive. He did a brilliant job. It made our night so enjoyable. We both had a wonderful evening & excellent meal in Sawadee. I will definitely eat there again when I’m visiting Brighton next time.

Call to book. Some covid measures in place (server wore mask, tables well spaced - but menus passed around). Nice food and decent value. Extremely slow service and sometimes brought half the order at a time with a long wait for the rest.

On and off we have been coming to Sawadee for 12 years on our visits to Brighton, glad to report it is still as good as ever.Fantastic food with great sized portions, we opted for one of the set meals which offered a good variety at a great price. All very flavoursome.And of course great staff who offer a very warm welcome, long may this star of St James Street shine bright!

Reasonably priced. I had a portion of Thai prawns crackers with sweet chili £2.00 Vegetarian red curry £7.95 Pad Thai prawns £8.95. Food was delicious. I will definitely come back with my family.

Not good, customer service pretty poor, funny too, tables of 6 get free thai crackers, our tables bill was £28 more than the table of 6 but unless you are in a large group dont expect anything.I dont mind paying for anything but fair is fair.Food was mediocre which disappoints me to say ad we ate here 12 months ago and scored it 5 stars.This time was not a good experience.Did we feel welcome? Valentine's treat for me as I love Thai food. Definitely not disappointed the meal was lovely. Being Valentine's night the place was very busy. Despite this the food came pretty quickly. I had spicy pork with chilli and basil, my partner had fruity duck curry. Both dishes were well cooked and delicious. Will go again as this was an enjoyable meal. Recommended.
