Was a lovely regular of mine where you can enjoy the very finest, freshly-baked pasties and an array of lovingly-made cakes. No farting around - just honest, decent grub and a great location to watch folk wandering the North Laine. My issue with the service is down to the rude attitude of not the owner Ian and his wife (who are lovely), but the woman who is their shop manager. I will give an entirely honest account here: She knows who I am because we have bantered weekly for months but it is mostly around being absolutely awkward with me always. Now, I assumed she didn't really dislike me but that it was her dry humour. I have tried to laugh off her telling other staff not to serve me or charge more but was getting anxious that she really didn't appreciate my custom. This came to a head today when she absolutely insulted me in front of her colleague and anyone else who may have been in. I suggested that it wasn't appropriate to be critiscising a regular customer but she would not apologise and I now feel uncomfortable returning to what had been a regular place to relax and enjoy lunch. Ian is aware of these issues with her, because he has had to explain to his other staff that they are not to oblige her when she instructs them to treat me with contempt. What a shame one person who claims it is "their shop" is being allowed to call the shots when it comes to every aspect of a place where she is an employee only.

The gluten free pastry was incredibly disappointing. £8.50 for a mediocre sized pastry that was warmed up for me, in the microwave, this should have been warning enough. The pastry was lacking any flavour which was the cherry on top. I respect it can be awkward catering for gluten free but this is just not how you do it. I’d honestly recommend removing this from your menu if you insist on charging £8.50 for it. Atleast the gluten free cakes looked nice….

Had the Gluten free vegan mushroom pie, it was absolutely inedible, the pastry was so dry you could barely class it as food, it would be better used to patch a hole in the wall. I've been a customer of the shop since they opened in 2005 and they're most certainly a jewel in Brighton's crown. Their pasties are world class but actually only a small part of what they offer. There's also a fantastic selection of cakes, brownies and other sweet delicacies that are all hand made on the premises by the proprietor. A significant proportion of both sweet and savoury offerings are vegan, they've been providing these options since the shop opened and long before the high street chains followed suit. Plainly and simply their food is delicious, served in charming premises - eat in or take away - by lovely staff. Great drinks too, including excellent coffee. I can't recommend them enthusiastically enough. Brilliant. A++

10/10 - Delicious. Fresh. Authentic. If you're in Brighton and you're looking for some artisan shopping and you like pies, this delightful find is for you. Catering to all tastes: chicken, traditional, peppered steak, and vegan/vegetarian mixes, they have a fresh and piping hot pie for everyone. A warm and cozy atmosphere by genuinely friendly staff. They also serve tasty deserts and the most amazing homemade hot chocolate that's as thick fresh honey. £7.50 on average and worth every penny. Pay with cash or card. Seats 25 - 30. What a gem❤️

Brighton & The Laines have an abundance of bakeries & coffee shops. Stopped as this little one (as the mince pies in the window looked delicious) Friendly staff, cafe as you’d expect had a very rustic & cool vibe to it. Mince pies were clearly freshly cooked. I had a traditional one, which was delicious. They do also have some unique choices such as a peanut butter mince pie 🤔. Not cheap, but good.

£6.50 for a pasty is INSANE ⚠️ So I went for a sausage roll. When I spend £3 on a sausage roll I expect it to be a quality Cumberland and not the low grade pink mushy stuff I received! I ordered a gluten free leek and mushroom pie, my partner ordered a beef pasty. My pie had floppy pastry, and very little dry flavourless filling. The manager was extremely rude to me when i explained this. She told me that everyone else loves them (my fault) and that they cost her a lot of money to buy in. It had cost me £7.90 which was ridiculous anyway. She also told me that is very difficult to make a pie taste nice if it is gluten free and vegan, which make me question why she sells them. I asked for the GF traditional pasty as a replacement- she looked astounded and demanded why I had bought a vegan pie when I'm not a vegan (not her business actually but for the record I liked the sound of mushroom and leek pie!). After arguing with me for about 5 minutes she gave me the gluten free traditional pasty. The pastry was still very poor and floppy, plenty of meat but again very dry inside. My partners gluten rich pasty was very ordinary. We used to love this place and I've eaten many a pasty there before. Never again. We paid a total of £17.50 for a coffee, a tea, two dry pasties and an unpleasant experience from the manager.

Fantastic Cornish pasties, far better than you bog standard highstreet savoury pastry retailers. Lots of various flavours both meat and veggie so a great option to choose from. Would recommend a pasty to anyone, pastry was crispy and buttery and standard filling was very tasty.

Unfortunately the timeframes from ordering food and drinks, to them arriving at the table, were clearly out of sync. To the point that we had to alert the waiting staff that we had been waiting for 1 hour 20 minutes for our dishes and that other tables had received food even though they arrived long after us. Thankfully the situation was resolved without fuss and when the food arrived, it was incredibly tasty. Thank you for a good outcome. We will return.

The decor, the atmosphere and the staff are great, but unfortunately the food is disappointing. The Walrus was really busy at Saturday lunchtime and you can't help but wonder if it has become a victim of its own success and slightly over ambitious. The quality of the food was very average. Two main courses were taken off the bill as two of our party of six were not happy with them: dry burger and a very oily artichoke and butternut squash salad. The oil was of indeterminate origin and certainly did not taste of olive oil; our 2 Italian friends can vouch for that! The added halloumi was battered and deep fried as opposed to grilled... Chips seemed like the oven variety and everything was just rather bland. Service was really friendly and attentive for such a busy venue.

£7.90 for a large traditional pasty. It’s a ridiculous price for a bit of pastry with a meat and veg filling. After disagreeing with the man behind the counter I left without a pasty since the price is a rip off. I ended up going to the new Wendy’s up at Churchill square where for the same price I got a triple burger with fries and a coke. Some shops in Brighton seem to think it’s ok to overcharge it’s customers. I have bought pasties from the shop many times in the past but myself and the freinds I told about the price will never return.
