We often pop out to the Hotel from our home in Barnstaple. Sometimes just for coffee, sometimes for lunch. Staff always welcome us despite not being staying guests. Just pop in and have a look and a drink. No-one makes you feel an outsider. One of the pleasantries of North Devon which has not changed dramatically over the years. Go visit.

Just come back from a lovely stay at this hotel. The location is second to none. The service is attentive but not intrusive. The facilities were all clean and easy to use. The only area that could be improved is the quality of food. A large group of us ate there on the first night and none of us returned, instead choosing to eat at one of the many nice local restaurants. Perhaps the chef was away or having a bad night, but the steaks were rubbery and the other mains were no better than average pub food. The breakfasts however were pretty good. Despite the food we’d definitely return.

We ate here the first night as it was included in our package and I wasn’t expecting great things. I was very surprised as all courses were really tasty and nicely presented. Breakfast cemented things so we booked for the following night. Again we weren’t disappointed. Food is fresh and good quality and the chef clearly knows what to do with them. Loved the monkfish lentil starter, mushroom/quinoa burger and whisky eclair.

Excellent dinner; awful breakfast; great afternoon tea. Dinner was exceptional and beautifully executed and delicious…but they didn’t have the duck available. Service could have been better: don’t serve champagne slightly chilled and without an ice bucket with some water and lots of ice - I went to the bar myself to ask for the ice bucket; I was told by the bar staff to ask the waiter in the restaurant for the ice bucket - how about you sort that out for me? The ice bucket arrived. Breakfast was really poor: the fried eggs were prepared in bulk and brought out to get cold on the counter despite the lamps and were sliding all over the place in the oil; some eggs were undercooked; others had broken yolks. The bacon was like biting into a leather shoe; the sausages were still linked together and not individual - who thought that was ok? So I ordered two poached eggs; they arrived hard so sent them back and asked for soft poached and they arrived still slightly firm. I gave up. Afternoon tea was excellent and delicious. Friendly and helpful service.

The service here was excellent during our three night stay even though the hotel seemed pretty full, and my gluten free diet was well catered for. We particularly enjoyed the soups which were very tasty, and the chicken supreme was excellent. We also enjoyed a hearty breakfast here each morning. Brend Hotels source food locally so one improvement would be to have a locally produced cider from either Devon or Cornwall, (rather than Suffolk!).

Afternoon tea at Saunton Sands is a delight. Great views across the bay and delicious tea and cakes served by lovely staff. Cakes were wonderful but I would have perhaps have liked one or two less and a couple more sandwiches instead, as these were also sublime but over way too soon. Afternoon tea for two in a hotel of this quality is never going to be cheap, but as a treat it doesn't get much better.

A group of seven of us went to the Saunton Sands Hotel for afternoon tea. It was amazing. I am not usually a tea drinker but I thought it would be rude not to try some of the fabulous leaf teas that were on offer and I really enjoyed a pot of Earl Grey. The tea was accompanied by a range of sandwiches, cakes and of course scones, cream and jam. All of which were delicious. However a word of warning if you come here for afternoon tea make sure that you are hungry as you will soon feel full. The staff were also excellent, polite and nothing was too much trouble. I would highly recommend going here for afternoon tea. There are also amazing views of the beach.

First impressions: The Doorman was very polite and helpful. This place should be at the top of its game. It is a shame because a view is just a view. It is in an amazing situation but that is not enough. Firstly the toilets next to the bar, often the first port of call were really not nice. They smelt and the bins in both toilets were overflowing. OK it was a Sunday lunch time but really.....Where is the housekeeping ? The bar staff looked tired and generally fed up. So far not good. We had booked a table but the place was hardly full, warning warning. The food was just indifferent , it is just so sad. Starters were OK but who serves white sliced cheapo bread with what was really lovely smoked salmon ? I think it said granary on the menu. The mains were only just warm, thank goodness we did not eat outside. The beef on one was tough and some items were forgotten including my main which when it did arrive in a haze of apology still had some parts missing. How does this happen ? The waiting staff tried hard bless them and there are some refined touches,( serving the soup at table side, the ice bucket, pouring the wine for tasting and and how do you like your beef cooked ?) within the service but who wants refinements if the basics are not right ? The young lady running the restaurant acted as if she just wanted to get the service over with and she needs to polish her manners and her shoes. This is not me being harsh but if you raise expectation with your advertising then please follow it through. The puddings were the best part of the meal. They were quite small but well thought out. Coffee was all over the place and arrived at different times. I am so disappointed with this place that I feel like shouting "is anyone listening.... does anyone care?" Maybe they should swop the staff around between Saunton Sands and their other more successful establishments so that this place and its so so food become the great experience that it deserves to be. What a waste.

If you want to go somewhere with the best views in Devon this restaurant is the one! You can either dine in the restaurant by the window or sit outside on a sunny day and enjoy the idyllic views of the 5 mile long beach and watch the surfers. I never tire of the breath-taking views and although slightly biased after having my wedding reception here some 30 years ago, I enjoy every moment I spend there. The menu is very impressive and they support my dietary needs with gluten and dairy free options. I wanted to take my mum to a special place to mark the start of our weeks holiday. The Saunton Sands certainly met my expectations.Large car park with easy access to the hotel. You walk through and down some stairs to the restaurant which looks over spectacular Saunton Sands Beach. The menu offered three courses for £19.99 which was a surprise as I couldn't believe how reasonable that was. On entering the restaurant were we're taken to out table and our coats taken. Water was brought out and poured and the stunning, beautifully presented menus were handed over.A large wine list was also offered. A great choice, I found it very hard to decide. I opted for soup, beef and afterwards ice cream. The service was excellent, the staff incredibly attentive. The soup was delicious and the beef pink and tender and full of flavour. We had enough vegetables to feed four people. I especially enjoyed the perfectly crisp roast potatoes. It's the little touches I really appreciated, the offer of a brown or white roll. Your glass filled up, the table swept for crumbs and quality napkins and tableware. We both loved it and thought it was five star. Well done all the staff who worked that day, you created a very happy memory for us both.

(There were no other guests in our area so it was inconveniencing no one apart from the waiter. We did move ourselves!) Generally the service was poor; drinks order muddled twice, and very slow. Warm rose wine was not good either!Main disappointment was lack of help with a food intolerance. I cannot eat onion so asked if gravy on beef contained onion or onion powder. I was told "yes", so I asked if the chef could provide another gravy and was told "no!" In my experience in may hotels and restaurants I am told that the chef will provide a specially made gravy for me but in SS I was told I could have the meal "dry!" As I said, "very disappointing"

Sadly I've had two terrible experiences. I am a local person, love surfing at Saunton Sands and have arranged several beach clean for this beach. Last year, I went to a Saunton Sands Chirtstmas party with my work colleagues. Since I cannot tolerate certain foods for medical reasons, I contacted Saunton Sands Hotel beforehand to enquire about the menue. A menue was set up for me, but sadly, on the evening of the celebration, nobody knew about it, the kitchen had not prepared anything for me. It took the waitress 15 minutes of going back and for to sort out a meal for me (which was nice but left me feel put on the spot and awkward).A few months later, in summer, I was invited for cream tea with friends at Saunton Sands Hotel. Again, my friend inquired whether there would be vegetarian, gluten & dairy free cake options, and was reassured everything would be fine, so I came along. On the day, the waiter and kitchen knew nothing about the request and I was told there was no such option. The waiter spoke only to my friend about my request, not to me. He went to the kitchen and came back saying I could have a gluten free bread roll with cream (Who wants that for cream tea? Especially after requesting dairy free?). He went back to the kitchen and came back saying I could have 'a gluten free cake that probably has dairy in it', then he went back to the kitchen, came back saying I could have a gluten free beef sandwich (clearly not my requested vegetarian option!). I felt very awkward in front of my friends, like being in a bad joke and ended up just drinking a peppermint tea whilst my friends were indulging in cakes. I even had to pay for my cup of tea. I later complained to Saunton Sands and was offered a vegetarian, gluten & dairy free tea for two but have sadly not felt like coming back in fear of another Faulty Tower Experience.

We booked really late this time, I was slightly concerned as last time we'd had a sea facing room this time we could only have inward facing. I had read a couple of negative reviews on theses rooms. I didn't have to worry it was outstanding. We had room 203 just fabulous. Lovely size, bath and shower, amazing comfortable bed, lovely. The only downside with this hotel for me is that I never want to leave!

We visited The Saunton Sands Hotel`s Terrace lounge for afternoon tea . The terrace lounge is spacious and in beautiful Art Deco style . It has a accessible terrace with stunning views of Saunton beach below . We had fresh scones with sandwiches and cakes from the patisserie . I went for a Japanese green rice tea and Angy went for a Keemun tea . Everything was perfectly presented . the sandwiches were the English classic selection of salmon ,cucumber , egg mayo etc . The scones fruit and plain served with Devon clotted cream in copious quantity and strawberry jam were delicious . To finish we had the signature cakes a coffee and walnut cake and a classic Victoria sponge . Everything came to under £35 . The service was warm friendly yet professional . All in all a delightful experience . With its commanding cliff top views The Saunton Sands Hotel is one of the best locations in North Devon we fancy the main restaurant after a great experience at The Terrace !

we stayed at the hotel for six nights in a party of ten. The food was very good, except the last night, which put a dampener on the stay. There was a wedding and I think the kitchen staff were overstretched. We had to wait an hour and fifteen minutes for our starters and the lobster bisque were stone cold and had to go back to be reheated. Three people had the courgette veloute which was so salty it was inedible. My fillet steak main course (for which there was a £22 supplement) was accompanied by a bowl of cold Bearnaise sauce. When I complained, the waitress argued with me that it should be cold! Although tasty, the steak was cold by the time I had the last mouthful. indicating that that too had sat in the kitchen for while

Chef can't cope with the number of covers in this restaurant. Lovely main courses. Poor starters. Good desserts. Charming staff let down by poor management.

Staying here now. Although the hotel in general is ok I am not sure who gives the star rating.Room..... Not very clean at all. Very dusty and bathroom is like something from a caravan. Dirty...... And very very small. Simple things should be adhered to. Website only shows the newly refurbished rooms and is not a true reflection of what you get. TIP. Make sure you ask for a good room. Also..... Very thin walls so kept awake by loud snoring coming from next doors room so not a good nights sleep at all. Food.... Very disappointing. Beach restaurant..... Do not have the triple cooked chips. More like triple soggy chips must have been cooked and left under heat lamp.

For a large hotel, the food is of excellent quality with plenty of choice. They aim for local produce and it is certainly fresh and imaginative. Breakfasts are more than above average with plenty of staff on hand.

Went to Saunton Sands about two years ago and spent three nights, was so taken by the beauty and atmosphere as well as the meals that wished to come back for a special celebration. So went this time with family for drinks and dinner. While the view from the balcony is stunning, looking out to the sea, the drinks took ages to arrive. The service in the main dining room was erratic and the food though very well presented and exotic looking, lacked flavour and taste. It certainly was nothing like what we experienced on previous visit. Other family members also felt the same. Bread basket was just plonked on our table and not served. While we knew it is a fine dining place and expected to pay accordingly, in this instance I don't feel we got value, service or food for our money. We tried to make most of it as we did not want to ruin our special family get together.

Well presented, interesting, fantastic flavours. Although some people may think it looks a bit fussy please don't let that put you off. I have never experienced food like this before and so glad I did. I am amazed that the chefs can produce as many dishes on the menu and have them all look so good and very tasty. I stayed at the hotel for four nights and dinner was one of the highlights. Definitely have the amuse bouche at the start of every meal - ingenious.

I have been twice now and wow I love it here. This restaurant is not to be confused with Sands on the Beach. You dress for dinner which I love an excuses to get dressed up. We went early and had a few cocktails 1st. The restaurant is Art Deco with spectacular views across the dunes and beach. It has classic and perfect flawless service. The head waiter remembered us from our previous visit 6 months previous which I was amazed at. The menu is fresh and inventive, made up of local produce. The presentation is immaculate and the tastes and flavours a celebration of all that is good in food. The whole party agreed. The selection on the wine list was very good as was the Somalia. I found the bill reasonable for what we had and would highly recommend this restaurant and would defiantly go back.

Huge, delicious scones as part of a cream tea. They were freshly baked and came with generous portions of jam and clotted cream. Highly recommended but a bit dangerous for your waistline.
