Sasso in Harrogate

Best risotto I have ever had! Lovely food, lovely people. We made a booking to return next week, at the end of our meal, we were so charmed. Would in particular recommend the charcuterie as a starter. Scrumeee!

Went tonight as part of a very large group (60+) and the staff were simply amazing at accommodating us and making us feel incredibly safe and welcome. The food was divine and so fresh. Would definitely look to come here again if I’m in Harrogate again.

Chose this place due to the pictures on the website (chose by the husband) staff were great, food some of the dishes were good, others not so much. Had to send the first dish back as the food tasted burnt and acrid, which was happily replaced, when the replaced same dish came it was ok. The white mushroom risotto tasted great, cooked really well. My husband ordered lemon sole for mains he enjoyed this, but I ordered the lobster ravioli, this wasn't nice at all, tasted bitter and over p owered with fennel the ravioli didn't taste of lobster at all, I had to leave this. They told me it was strange because it's a very popular dish, well afterwards I read the reviews left on trip advisor and this isn't the case, it's not just me who disliked this dish and found it inedible. The staff were great though, really nice and helpful and also knocked my meal off the bill and a little more. Due to this experience we probably wouldn't be back.

Food very nice but not the place to go if hungry at lunchtime, set lunch menu portions are very small or were the day we went, disappointed as been before and was better, left hungry!! Maybe better on an evening

Sasso feels like a hidden gem to me. I have lived in the town and never been but i will definitely be going again! Food, service and ambience just great. I am coeliac and most of the dishes were possible for me. Other guests in the party all normal menu but enjoy great wine of which there was good choice and advice. Just a little picky point - we were sat right at the bottom of the restaurant in the far room and it was chilly tbh esp when the door to the kitchen opened and closed. There were spaces in the higher part of the restaurant but when asked we were unable to move to them for some reason....when i go again I would only sit on the top part of the restaurant. Overall though it was fantastic. Highly recommend

When you arrive at the restaurant it looks quite small but once inside it’s a warren of different rooms so actually quite a lot of covers. I guess that helps create an intimacy although we were right at the back of one room so a little removed. A bit charmless. It’s a big menu which is not always a good thing. I had beef carpaccio to start followed by lobster ravioli. Both ok not amazing. Suspect the ravioli was not cooked fresh. Biggest problem here was the timing. We drank a bottle of wine before the starters arrived. It was a good 45 minutes. Three of our 4 starters involved no cooking. Same happened with the main course too. This is a common issue in the uk now. I suspect not enough staff in the kitchen to cater for the amount of covers resulting in a non satisfactory outcome. I live in London. If this happened you’d be bust in 2 weeks. Too much competition. Pricing was pretty fair. Perhaps consider simplifying the menu and do less but better or putting up the prices and hiring some extra staff. Looking at the reviews the people of Harrogate seem very happy with what’s on offer though. Me not!

Super food and excellent service made for a special evening for us.

The restaurant was quite empty but I suspect that was because we were eating just a few days before Valentine’s Day. It certainly deserves to be full every night. The welcome was warm and the restaurant was comfortable. One of our main course choices was not available but that meant we could enjoy some of the best pasta I have ever eaten. The food was of a very high standard and the wine excellent and not over priced. In fact the meal was exceptional value and very tasty. I do recommend this restaurant which is a little tucked away being as you descend off the street to the entrance. Well worth it when you find it however.

Went to sasso for a friends birthday and was a brilliant night. The pasta is truly incredible and the staff are amazing, such a good night, highly rate this beautiful restaurant

Lovely friendly atmosphere, with authentic and delicious italian food paired with a nice big wine menu. They are always happy to customise dishes to make vegan/vegetarian. Have been twice now and had delicious vegan dishes each time. Service was a bit slow but fine once it got going - though it was a Saturday night so to be expected.

What has gone wrong ? If you have a new chef , you have made a mistake . The food that all 6 of us are last night was poor .. crab cakes were not fresh , seemed frozen, bland, no white crabmeat, just a tasteless mush that was deep fried . The lobster rav , which I have enjoyed many times in this restaurant was dreadful . Not homemade, the sauce was clearly a pre bought bisque that was straight from a jar . The pasta was undercooked and tasted like it and the filling were previously frozen. Woefully underseasoned. It was awful . The discount offered was accepted but we would prefer to pay in full for good food , what has Happened at this previously great restaurant ?

Wow. My wife and I had a fantastic dining experience here a week or so ago. Everything was first class, excellent service, food and ambience. A superb little restaurant in Harrogate, which I highly recommend is worth a visit when in Harrogate. Thankyou all the team for making our evening a super experience.

We had a lovely evening the food was excellent and the service great. Most certainly we will be going back as only in Harrogate for a girlie weekend.

My wife and I stumbled upon Sasso after leaving another lunch venue for the lack of service. What good luck! Everything about our lunch visit was great. The set menu (we chose three courses) was good value and had a wide selection. The service was really friendly and attentive. Food was delicious. I had crab cakes (crocchette?) to start, salmon pasta parcels for main, then tiramisu to finish, with a glass of Sancerre. The starter and main dishes looked on the small side, but were rich and filling and just right. The tiramisu was a generous portion, but nice and light and, again, just right. The setting, just below ground, was nice. There was Christmas music on - not too loud - and there was a festive vibe with the staff dress too. We would definitely recommend the place, and I expect we will be back again in future.

The whole evening just felt rushed. That's a shame because the menu isn't cheap. If we're spending £50-£70 a head then we expect to enjoy the meal in a leisurely fashion. To be honest, we just felt disappointed.

Fabulous food and service as usual on a quiet evening.

Dined here yesterday and had the theatre menu. Everything was so fresh and bursting with flavour. The service was impeccable. My new favourite place. If you like Italian food you will love it here. I will definitely be going back.

The best mushroom risotto I've ever had!

We booked for a wine tasting evening last night.5 wines to try with a canapé to accompany each wine & interesting information on each one. A main course of our choice to follow which was delicious. An introduction.also,to Fairfax Distillery & the opportunity to sample their gins & spiced rum. A warm welcome,excellent service-a thoroughly enjoyable evening .

Tasty food, and they have a vegan menu with a range of options if you ask for one.

Just had an absolutely gorgeous meal tonight. Beautiful Italian tastes, they know how to cook here.

We were staying in Harrogate for 3 days to celebrate our Golden Wedding Anniversary on the second evening we booked this lovely restaurant and were blown away by service, staff, ambiance and delicious food!! On leaving we asked if we could book for tonight which was our anniversary date, yes we could and it didn’t disappoint, so pleased we found this lovely place. We hopefully will return, special thanks to Debbie!

What a fantastic experience from start to finish. A beautiful authentic Italian restaurant 😍. We were there to celebrate my birthday and couldn't of wished for better service and food. Would highly recommend this place to anyone that's spending time in Harrogate, thank you to all the staff you made my birthday weekend very special 😊

This was a return visit after our first 2 years ago. We live in Paris. We were delighted to find the same continuing excellence in all aspects of this marvellous experience. We will certainly be back.

Absolutely beautiful, from entering the restaurant to leaving the whole experience was exceptional. On arrival we were greeted and taken to a nice quiet table which we had requested, we were brought a jug of water and complimentary glasses of prosecco. This was followed my a chefs taster of mini tartlets, beautiful I could of eaten lots. Our order was taken and food arrived in a good time. Scallops to die for and hubby enjoyed the fillet beef salad. Our mains of lasagne and seafood ravioli also delicious. The desserts of caramel panna cotta and semifredo with meringue and chocolate (my favourite) were a perfect finish all washed down with a bottle of rose. We will definitely be returning next time we are in Harrogate

We had a wonderful meal in this lovely restaurant as a present from our daughters for our Ruby anniversary. Everything about the evening was an absolute delight. The food was delicious and the service we received from our young waiter Charlie was exemplary. We would definitely return. Thank you.

Great restaurant and friendly staff. Early bird menu is great deal. Had the prawn and crab pasta which I really enjoyed.

Arrived at 5pm - was shown to a rubbish table - asked for a table under the window but told I couldn’t sit there - table still wasn’t taken when we left!- ordered starter and main course for my husband and I - my husbands soup was cold so I ate pate while he waited for soup - main course - mine was lovely but husband’s lasagne arrived cold so sent it back so I ate my main course alone too! Dessert very nice - there was one waitress who was a student and she was the best member of staff in the whole restaurant- the others were cocky and arrogant! I called over the manager/owner who said we couldn’t sit where we had originally wanted to and pointed out that the table still wasn’t taken as we were leaving - and all he did was justify himself rather than apologise- we certainly will not return whilst he stil works there - and apparently he’s been there 18 years! Food ok but would definitely Not recommend

Fantastic service and amazing food- I had to finish every piece of rice from my risotto. Highly recommend this restaurant. I asked for a wine recommendation to accompany my meal and what I received was spot on.

This is a lovely old established family restaurant. Good Italian food and great service. My only criticism is the outdoor space. Unlike the restaurant it’s not inviting and looks rather neglected. Whilst I accept we don’t get too many opportunities to dine outdoors, lots of restaurants have umbrellas with heaters and pretty plant pots with attractive lighting. A case in point is the fat badger. It’s always full despite mediocre food due to the very pleasant outdoor space.

Homemade pasta, desserts and perfectly cooked fish are hard to come by these days, especially with so many chain restaurants around. Yet, Sasso continues to deliver excellent food and service at a great price, making it the top choice every time.

Bit of a Curate's egg for me. Pleasant enough venue and the staff are very accomodating. I believe Sasso's is endeavouring to appeal on a fine dining level, but the execution of the two dishes I had, suggests they are a bit off the mark. A starter of Crocchette di Granchio (crabcakes/croquettes) promised fine flavours but delivered few and was unremarkable. One crabcake short of a value for money dish (there were two on the plate). I wouldn't have known it was crab, to be honest. My main promised much, but again fell short on delivery. Tortellini de Sasso lists prosciutto. parmesan, mortadella, pancetta and truffle. The flavours at least, were there. However again, the dish felt a bit clunky. Texturally rather rubbery/heavy on the palate and well short of the refinement I would imagine they are aiming for. All in all, I was disappointed. I suspect they can do better than this. Perhaps Team Sasso need to take a step back and reassess their aims. They can cook, but just not at the level the venue and rhetoric suggests. I would not be put off returning, but my expectations would be for dishes presenting more skill and finesse, on behalf of the kitchen...

Food quality was good, although some of our dishes were light on quantity. Restaurant lacked a welcoming atmosphere and coupled with poor communication from staff, a planned 3 course lunch was surprisingly shortened….., when brusquely advised by the waitress that the kitchen was now closed......the choice of ANY desserts was just not an option! Overall not a positive dining experience!

Excellent upmarket Emilia-Romagnan ristorante with a great-value set menu and particularly gorgeous filled pasta. Here two starters, a delightful vitello tonnato and crab croquettes (billed as cakes); also two seafood ravioli, one of sea bass and the other of lobster, both delicious and the sauces demanding spooning. Not pictured: a tiramisu with subtle aniseed flavouring from a sambuca sauce, and a refined and beautiful Amarone. Superb.

My husband and I and our good friends chose to eat at Sasso from a local person's recommendation. We all had excellent meals. We ordered appetisers, a main and a pudding. The food was delicious, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was perfect. We ordered a bottle of house red and the wine complimented the meal really well. It is a very well run family business. We will definitely come back again.

I was impressed with a great combination of pasta also desserts top-notch 

Visited Sasso twice in 5 evenings while on holiday. Best food we had all week, hence our second visit. I asked for cocktail/mocktail but was told there was no menu for that. A few mi uses later the waiter cane over and asked if I would like him to make me a cocktail, more sweet or sour. I said sour. He came back with the most tasty cocktail I have ever enjoyed. Ginger ale/cranberry/lychee. The pasta dish was superb, as was the Tiramisu. We were not disappointed on our second visit either. Pork belly and lemon tart, to put it simply.

I had a wonderful dining experience at this Italian restaurant. The service was impeccable, and the pasta dishes featured incredible combinations of flavors. Each dish was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Highly recommend for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Italian cuisine!

I took my daughter for a gastronomic experience, and it did not disappoint. We loved the burrata cheese with fresh strawberries, and the pasta was amazing with a unique London-style combination. Definitely recommend!

I wasn't happy with my pasta. It was watery and overcooked, with a watery tasteless filling. I only received 5 pieces of pasta and it didn't feel worth £18. I had a starter, main and dessert which cost £45. I left feeling very hungry, disappointed and unsatisfied.

Just not very good despite lots of great reviews. Very quiet so expected much better service, food was really poor, just overall a really disappointing experience

The food was next level and the best i have eaten for a while. I had the scallops starter and the lobster ravioli. Service excellent and a nice ambience I am convinced this is now the best restaurant in Harrogate!

Brilliant meal at Sasso tonight. Food quality is always exceptional and tonight was no different. Please don’t try the aubergine parmagano - I want it all for myself!!! If you haven’t already tried Sasso, you definitely should.

Had the pre theatre menu deal, starter of crab cakes and Bream for main course. Both excellent. Sadly the side order of grilled vegetables were overcooked and greasy but edible. The big disappointment was Apple tart dessert which was actually apple pie made with tinned apples and well basically looked and tasted like it had come from the cash and carry. The ice cream it was served with wasn’t anything to rave about either. However overall good just avoid the apple pie.

Whilst it always feels special, it also feels incredibly comfortable making for a very relaxed evening. We ate from the early bird menu, which is fantastic value and their range of wines is superb. When in Harrogate Sasso’s is one of our favourite restaurants to dine. It has a lovely ambience and the staff are always friendly. The little tasters from chef are always a lovely surprise. We were celebrating my birthday and had a fabulous evening.

Booked a table for 130 on Saturday to meet with family for a special birthday lunch for my husband. There were 4 other diners seated apart from us so 8 covers in total. Our orders were taken efficiently and drinks brought, followed by delicious starters - so far so good. When we got to the mains two came together then after a few minutes the other two. I had ordered a small portion and a side. No sign of the side. I waited few minutes before questioning this, and after a while someone came back to say the side order had been missed but the chef would make it. No apology was offered. Just over 15 mins after the first main had been served my side arrived and was placed on the table with no apology or even any eye contact. I had to ask for condiments which included vinegar - this was bizarrely served in a small saucer (?) and again no eye contact was given or any attempt made to engage. As the others had by then finished I ate my meal alone. By the time our mains were finished it was about 240pm and we were offered the dessert menu which 3 people ordered from. One of the party said they might like a coffee but could they wait to decide until after the dessert and were told this was fine. Once desserts were cleared the waitress asked if that family member would like their coffee and went ahead and took the order. It was at this point the service really went down hill. The bill was brought immediately after the coffee and the waitress came to the table no less than 3 times with the card machine within literally a couple of minutes. This despite the fact coffee had just been served and we hadn’t yet even opened or looked at the bill. When she returned a 4th time I made it clear I’d like her to allow us to finish the meal and was unhappy that it felt like we were being rushed. Her reply? ‘We (she meant the staff) should have left by 3pm’. Said just like that! I pointed out the delay in my main course arriving and the fact our dessert and coffee orders had only just been served to which she said ‘I don’t make the rules’. It was like talking to an automaton. We explained there was no indication when we made our booking that we’d need to be exited by 3pm. And to be honest nothing was said whilst we were dining - not even when coffee was ordered and brought after their ‘closing time’. The final couple of customers were still in situ as we left and remarked they were going on somewhere else for their coffees as they were also told they’d have to leave and hadn’t realised the 3pm ‘rule’. Unfortunately I’d have to say the service received really spoiled our experience this time. The waitress was extremely indifferent bordering on rude, and we all felt like inconveniences despite the £300 price tag on our lunch (with service automatically added on). An even slightly more genial attitude and maybe a little forewarning when we booked our 130pm slot could have completely transformed this experience. Even someone speaking to us about closing as our mains were cleared e.g., ‘just to advise in case you weren’t aware, we do close at 3pm so if possible can I take your dessert and coffee orders now’ would have helped. Why continue taking orders if you’re past closing?!?! Nonsensical! There are so many great restaurants in Harrogate with friendly welcoming staff who appreciate their customers that despite the good food today I seriously doubt we’ll be returning to Sasso. Such a shame as we’ve visited in and off for 20 odd years.

Lovely restaurant, great food great service who could ask for more

We were at Sasso's this past weekend and the food was amazing. Great serving size in comparison to the pricing. The service was also very good and food was on time. Great experience, I will most definitely repeat.

Aubergine starter had a burned base, pasta dish was not hot. Certainly not as good as last time. Extra charge for bread, even though it was said to be complimentary (presumably the added olives were) along with an automatic service charge which was not merited. Very disappointed.

Yet another delightful dinner experience, gratitude to the wonderful staff for taking care of my mother. Sasso restaurant has consistently provided us with an enjoyable atmosphere, impeccable service, and top-notch food quality.

I am not a foodie in any way but I do like pasta and I have to say the food the service and the wine were exceptional. I would not eat anywhere else in Harrogate

Nice restaurant, good service good atmosphere. Good food. But and it’s a big but lunchtime portions are very small all the members of our party saying they were hungry after the two course lunch. On that basis would I go back again? Probably not as there are too many restaurants to choose from in the area.

Probably the best Italian in Harrogate, powerful flavours with every dish. We went early so it was quiet but it soon started to fill up as it approached 1930.

Excellent meal as always. Staff are always attentive without being intrusive and the food never disappoints. One of our favourite restaurants - only wish we lived nearer!

Sasso is back to being our go to restaurant in Harrogate. We had the set lunch which offers plenty of choice along with a couple of glasses of very reasonable rose Prosecco and a couple of glasses of the Trentino pinot noir which are both great value. In particular the tiramisu was top notch (and I've had a few) - really creamy and light - just how it should be.

Overall superb. Consistency in quality of food is key supported by excellent service, good wine and lovely atmosphere. I genuinely believe the pasta is the best you can have. My wife and I have been regular visitors for years and will continue to do so. Congratulations Sasso.

We visit Sasso alot and we have never been disappointed - the food is always amazing and the service perfect. They have a new menu coming out this weekend - so we are looking forward to trying it out soon. This is by far the best restaurant in Harrogate - not just Italian but all restaurants - and we would and do recommend to anyone to go.
