Definitivamente no volveré aquí.

Definitivamente no volvería a The Sands.

St Andrews is blessed with many fine restaurants and this is up there with the best. I enjoyed Mussels in Thai broth (probably the best mussels I have ever tasted) and a very fine rib-eye steak. Service was excellent (especially from Kacia) and the prices were very reasonable . Wine list had a good selection, again at reasonable prices. I'm off to book again!

The Sands has a lovely 1920s atmosphere and we enjoyed our dinner there yesterday. Service was welcoming and smiley. We had the Love Eden Mill Gin, which has become a favourite drink of ours whilst in St Andrews. Our starters were the mussels in Thai broth, which were not too creamy, very abundant and just spicy enough, along with the smoked mackerel pate paired beautifully with a pickled, citrusy cucumber salad. My boyfriend really enjoyed the harissa rump of lamb, which had justthe slightest hint of pink and was very juicy. I opted for the salmon, as we were in Scotland after all, and was not disappointed! Its flesh was moist whilst the skin had been beautifully crisped. I also really liked the fact it was combined with lightly steamed greens and spring onion mash. We did not have room for dessert, although the Cranachan sundae and the orange steamed pudding would have tempted us- next time!

I recently visited for afternoon tea to celebrate my daughter's 30th and goddaughter's 40th birthdays. We had planned the visit for months as it's difficult to get us all together and we were all really looking forward to it. We looked in to several places for afternoon tea but due to several recommendations from friends and family we decided to visit the Old Course. As soon as we arrived we were disappointed with our table as the wicker table was badly stained; the paint was peeling off and the cushions were stained. The tea arrived which was lukewarm, later we were offered a top up of tea and it was also lukewarm and no new tea leaves added so very weak. The bread on the sandwiches was stale and not very appetising. The selection of cakes was very poor and the cakes lacked taste. We discovered after consuming some of the cakes that a hair was embedded in one of the pastry cakes. This was mentioned to the waitress, who apologised but no replacement was given. I have sampled many afternoon teas over the years, including Harrods, Fortnun and Masons along with local cafes and hotels and this was by far the worst. I expected more from a 5* hotel. Overall a very disappointing visit.

Portions were very large. No room for dessert. Drats! Second dinner back at Sands Grill was just as great. Didn't want to return to pub. Had intended to go to The Road Hole Restaurant within the hotel but nothing much appealed on the menu. Prices - outrageous! On our second evening of our three day stay at the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort and Spa (please see review) my fiancé and I had dinner at the Sands Grill. The restaurant was located on the ground floor and had a clubby upscale atmosphere with dark furniture and green upholstery. The staff was warm and efficient.Fellow diners were international and of all age groups. The Market Menu, which is available in lots of Scottish upscale restaurants, was good value at 35 GBP per person (ca. 40 Euro / ca. 45.30 USD) and we liked the choice of dishes, so we decided to go for this and not for a la carte. The cuisine can be described as light and classic with some experimental touches. Our drinks were a large bottle of still Highland Spring water, one Tia Maria and two hot chocolates. Our starters were roasted pigeon breast, chocolate, parsnip, passion fruit. It caused some debate between us. We liked the dish and the slightly unusual combination. He thought the passion fruit was too few. I thought the amount was just right. We are a bit different in that regards. His main course was gnocchi with sundried tomatoes and mozzarella. Mine was sea bass fillet with shrimp and mussel sauce and potatoes.Normally gnocchi dishes are too large and heavy. This one was just right. The shrimps and mussels were very generous and the dish was tasty. Our desserts included raspberry panna cotta with vanilla ice cream and plum crumble with custard and vanilla cream. The bill was 89.90 GBP, ca. 102.50 Euro, ca. 116.30 USDOverall we had a very pleasant evening and would have a meal at the Sands Grill again, when staying at the Old Course Hotel, Golf Resort & Spa in St. Andrews.Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? YES!Would we want to enjoy lunch/dinner again at this restaurant in our future? YES!

Not the best title but i would say that afternoon tea at the Old Course was good but not really that special. The sandwiches were quite simple and lacked filling and the ginger scone was very gingery - if that is even a word. The staff also do tend to hover and over ask if everything is okay - once, even twice is probably enough. I thought it would be a little more special but it wasn't. I wouldn't be a repeat customer.

Dined twice over the 4 days at the sands grill and on both occasions the food was excellent and portions plentiful. Recommend the pork ribs, mussels, prawn cocktail, Dover sole, or the rib eye steak. All fresh & tastey . Service was good, although you got the feeling of a) prompt service to get you in and out b) the wine kept been refilled so another bottle could be sold . On the plus side, all this with a professional warm courteous smile. Also the lighting needs to be looked at, as one is left with an impression that they can only afford 40w bulbs , and they have yet to grasp the balance between soft romantic lighting and pitch black. I'm sure the refurbishment will address this. Strongly recommended.

Not quite sure how to review this restaurant - the quality of the food was on the whole good but some of the portions were so large as the be off putting. We did see one party walk out carry foil containers of their leftovers......The service was just strange. We were made to feel uncomfortable when we arrived - it was as though we couldn't possibly have got a reservation as it was inconvenient for them.... When we got over that and were at the table making our choice from the menus we almost felt told off that we didn't want predinner drinks and just wanted a bottle of wine with our meal. The first bottle brought out was not what we had chosen & it took an age for the correct wine to be found. The food took ages to arrive so we did appreciate the huge baskets of bread with 3 choices of butter, tapenade & creme fraiche to accompany it. Getting a refil of our water glasses was a bit disasterous as the lighting is so dim that the waitress couldn't see when the glasses were full and a puddle on the floor & table had to be mopped up.You got the impression that things were not going well with the staff - we had an OK evening but I wouldn't rush back.

Myself and 2 of my friends booked to have 'The afternoon tea journey' at £33 per person. A couple of days before our afternoon tea I contacted the restaurant to let them know that we had one dietary requirement (vegan). The first time I called I spoke to a woman who said that they always take into account dietary requirements and it should be fine. She then told me that she would speak to the restaurant manager and call me back. I waited a couple of hours and still no call back. I then phoned again the next morning and spoke to another member of staff. I explained that I was expecting a call back and no one returned the call, I didn't get an apology however the guy I spoke to assured me that the dietary requirement was added to the notes and the chef would be able to cater for me. I phoned around 9am and our afternoon tea was for 3pm that day. The hotel itself was beautiful and grand however we did not get to experience this as we were sitting in the Sands Grill restaurant which was very dark and we were in a booth which had no windows/views - this was disappointing as we tried to book into the conservatory but it would not let us do this online so had to choose this option. Our server asked us if any of us had any dietary requirements which I found a bit strange as I assumed they would know this by now. I said yes and he said thats fine. He then returned a couple of minutes later and said unfortunately they did not know this and can only offer me sandwiches and a fruit salad. I explained to him that I had phoned twice and he said sorry but there was no record. We were given tea menus however it was a bit confusing and we didn't know what teas we were allowed to choose/how many etc. We weren't advised or helped to pick in any way and the server said that they would chose the 3 teas that they recommend for each 'course'. When our food arrived, my friends stand was pretty full with cakes, scones and some sandwiches. I was extremely disappointed when mine came out with 4 small triangle sandwiches filled with lettuce and a few tomatoes and a small fruit salad! I'm sorry but this is definitely not what you would expect from a 5 star restaurant and obviously not worth £33 for something so boring and simple. It was as if they just put something together in about 2 minutes and didn't even consider the dietary requirements. It was very bland and poor quality. It's 2016 - it's not unusual to have dietary requirements and I'm sure a lot more effort could have been put into accommodating this. We had 3 huge teapots of different tea - for all of us these were too big and we weren't given enough time to finish off each pot. Our sever came over with a different tea even when we were only half way through our first pot. This resulted in our earlier teas becoming cold and we felt a bit rushed. We had a vanilla tea and 2 other teas which were pretty bland in my opinion. My friends enjoyed most of there afternoon tea so that's a positive. When we had finished, we went over to pay and I was a little bit shocked when they had charged us the full price (£99), and I didn't receive an apology for my poor selection of food. I said that I felt uncomfortable paying the full price for the vegan option as I was very disappointed with my afternoon tea. They guy said he would go and speak to the chef. After a few moments, he came back and took £17 off the total bill which I accepted as I didn't want to cause a big fuss in front of people in the restaurant. However, I am still not happy that I had to pay £16 for such a small amount of bland food and teas. It's a shame because I had high expectations for this place but was really let down.

Visited for Afternoon Tea with my husband. The surroundings are beautiful and the service on the whole was very good. Rather disappointed in the offerings for the tea however, rather uninspiring sandwiches and dry cakes. The scones were tasty and I enjoyed the champagne. Also, the server who brought our tea stand over to us didn't bother to explain what was there, he just plonked it down and dashed off so we had to ask another member of staff to assist us. Having had much better afternoon teas elsewhere (check out the Signet Library in Edinburgh), I have to say for the price and the reputation of The Old Course Hotel this was really a very average tea.

Thought this was a higher end restaurant but everything is a mismatch. Service was ok though the waitress did not know much about the wines and sought the help of her manager who never bothered to come to our table to help out. The music was a real mismatch to the ambience. More like music played in a pub. We ordered mussels, lobster and a pasta. Only the mussels was good. The other 2 dishes were really not what we would call good cooking. Prices were on the high end and really is not value for money. This restaurant is way different from Road Hole Restaurant which we had enjoyed a lovely dinner the night before. Myself and a party of 8 booked for a meal on Saturday night at The Sands Grill, Old Course Hotel for an engagement celebration, sadly we were hugely disappointed with both service and food. Aside from the waitress being highly disinterested she also got our orders wrong, claiming it would take another 25min to bring the correct meal. This left one of us settling for the wrong meal, she even blamed us for not being clear with the order. Two of the party have severe allergy's to eggs and dairy and despite checking with the waitress several times and selecting limited options from the menu one meal was still brought with a cream sauce which only after asking was confirmed to be unsuitable and no alternative provided. The other dishes were mediocre, raw pasty, burnt potatoes, bland sauces and all for very high prices. Beware of water charges to simply have water available for the table you will be charged excessively. Considering the expectations with a 5 star Hotel all of the party found the meal and the service missing the mark. No apologies at any point from the staff or a query as to how the meals were leaves us to conclude this restaurant is not worth a visit.

They were very generous portions and I struggled to finish mine! The pea risotto was a little overcooked but I was okay with that.My dessert, a Honey & Drambuie mousse, was a little disappointing, it did not look or taste as I had expected and I was under wowed by it. Daughter treated father for Father's Day afternoon tea. Mum went too. Seating was uncomfortable but we weren't given a choice. Low settee small tables. Choice of tea. We asked for an Assam but only Planters offered. We chose Planters afternoon tea. It was delivered a good 15 mins before the food and was tepid by time to pour. The lower plate of three, savouries, were two triangles ( half a round) cream cheese and cucumber on white bread and egg and chive on brown bread, a small cheese scone, a tiny sausage roll, and another tiny savoury with a serving of chutney. Middle plate sported two scones, one fruit, one plain with a small pot of clotted cream and strawberry jam. The top plate had a selection of very tiny "hand crafted " cakes. A macaroon was the best, Eclaire, sponge topped with lemon icing, a very floppy gelatines something that looked fab but tasted of nothing and a very ordinary shortbread. We could not finish the scones and cakes so were offered a box to take home. Nicely packaged and tied with tartan ribbon., we didn't open until next day. Contents were a mess. Cakes scones shortbread all mixed up together. We had carried them carefully but had to bin them. Shame. Cost for two persons £50. Not worth it, sorry. We expected better from this establishment, having experienced afternoon tea here in the past. The quality has definitely deteriorated sadly.

We enjoyed the food and service so much we ate there 2 nights. I had the lamb special and steak both of which were excellent. The wine list is solid and not overpriced especially considering the location and the staff was absolutely wonderful. Everyone worked as s team. The deserts were wonderful. We had the Eton Mess. Booked an afternoon tea for the family was quite disappointed with the result. Expensive for what you get. 6 finger sandwich some small cakes and a coffee all for £25 each. Felt like we weren't wanted put into an alcove unable to see what was going on.

Rooms couldn't be faulted, everything perfect. Looked for a snack lunch and went to the bar on the fourth floor. Was told quite abruptly that the bar was closed as there was a wedding later in the day. This at around 13.45 - wedding was at 15.30! Was directed to the Jigger Inn - this full, possibly due to bar being closed. Went into St Andrews instead. Breakfast - we went to the Sands Restaurant which was empty! Staff were extremely pleasant although it would have been nice to be advised that eggs other than scrambled are cooked to order. This meant we had selected our breakfast items from the buffet (plates cold, not a good thing!) before orders for eggs was taken. While the quality of the food was good, the back bacon could have been used to resole shoes. Suspect the fourth floor breakfast room might have been better as busier therefore buffet topped up more frequently. Tea, coffee and toast served quickly.

The atmosphere was was subtle lighting, but bright enough, the service was 5*. Food top notch. I had a baby courgette with the flower still attached and stuffed with a mozzarella and porcini mushrooms mousse. The main course was a sea food basket. While the fish was very fresh and beautifully cooked, I did not realise that it was all done in batter. The batter itself was the best batter that I have tasted, however if I had realised that the seafood would come that way I would have chosen something else. The staff were very attentive, we had booked this meal to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. They sat us in an intimate booth with a large round table beautifully decorated and even placed a very attractive anniversary card on the table from the manager and all the staff The a la cart menu gave a good veriety of food, they also have a set menu called The Market Menu which equally tempting. You can mix and match from both menus, my starter was from the Market Menu and my main was from the a la cart. The Market Menu is excellent value at only £35 pp for a three course meal of this excellent high quality. Will definitely return.

Had a weekend away in St. Andrews and thought we would treat ourselves to a special meal at the sands but we were sadly disappointed, I had the seafood basket which was over cooked fish, couldn't even eat the salmon and my boyfriend had a sirloin steak which was small. Overall left feeling it had not been value for money and very disappointed,

Visited here with family and had the most fantastic meal. I had a fillet steak cooked to perfection by a chef who clearly understands meat. One of the best steaks I've had in a long time, the knife cut through it like butter. I would recommend this restaurant and the hotel.

This is a fairly ordinary restaurant. Its not particularly comfortable, quite noisy and the food is average. It's probably better for lunch. Food seems a bit pre prepared to me. Love the hotel but was not amazed by this place.

The steak is cooked well and the sides are tasty. The wine list is very short and does not provide many options. There are no table cloths which meant a lot of clunking of silverware on the tables. Its very expensive and for what you are getting seems a bit overpriced. The restaurant clearly ups its prices because it is located in the famous Old Course Hotel. It's a very good steak, but not the best in St Andrews and certainly not the best I have ever had. The service was good, but again did not stand out from any other restaurant. Not a must visit, but if you are in town for a few days then stop by for dinner.

Ate here while staying at the hotel. It was quiet, but the service was good with very friendly and chatty Portuguese waiters, and we ate well. The wine list was decent and a lot cheaper than the main restaurant. Would happily eat there again.

Nice afternoon tea, tasty sandwiches and cakes, bit skimpy on the preserve and clotted cream. Main disappointment was that the tea was lukewarm and was not served in in pretty china cups which might have helped keep the tea hot. Bit boring to serve in plain white breakfast cups, could have been much nicer. Staff very pleasant and attentive.

Myself, my wife and my 14year old son had dinner here last night. Market Menu was 3 courses which nine of us felt we could manage so we ordered from the main menu.Service was great very friendly and helpful. My son chose the bolognese and he's not a big fan of onions which my wife mentioned to the waiter. It arrived looking marvellous and without onions. I tasted it for myself and it was fabulous.I had the Rosper Grill Lamb which was divine and my wife had the mushroom risotto which she said was lovely.Tiramisu and sorbet for desserts were equally delightful. All in all I'd heartily recommend a visit to Sands Grill for carefully prepared food and warm friendly service.

We changed from the Road Hole Restaurant down to the Sands Grill almost at the very last minute.Despite previous arrangements for a birthday cake being made and arranged for the upstairs resaurant, the change did not phase any of the staff, everything went to plan and after the meal the surprise cake was duly produced. All the food that we ordered was great, looked good, smelt good and tasted lovely.Water at the table, bread with olive & garlic dip, wine was ordered, drinks as well, everything was brilliant.Service as with the rest of the Hotel was spot on, nothing could be faulted. The staff even offered to take a couple of pictures for us when the cake was being cut.

I had really been looking forward to this meal but I was a little disappointed. The service was amazing but I felt that the menu was uninspiring and though beautifully cooked my fish was seated in a stock that for my taste was far too salty. My husband's steak was fabulous but again somewhat over salted. Not quite what I had expected.

Had dinner in Sands for the first time as my daughter is now studying in St. Andrews university, we came in with no reservation and a small girl from Portugal whom I believe to be the manager made us feel very welcome and explained all dishes to us.Funny enough the other Portuguese waiter took our order very professionally and my daughter couldn't get enough of him! They are both keepers at this restaurant. We've both tried the fillet steak which was outstanding and the sticky toffee is a must. Definitely will be back.

Treated to dinner here by good friends and I was not disappointed, lovely fillet and cold beer enjoyed with great company. The staff were friendly and attentive but not overbearing. The table was kinda funny, a large round table which could've seated 6 for the four of us situated in an alcove meant that it was a bit disjointed and 3 sitting in the alcove seats with 1 on a chair at the opening, a bit separate due to the size of the table - so we just moved round and the 4 of us sat within the alcove to the one side of the table, no issues and certainly plenty room - did I say how good the steak was?

This is a bit pricier than some local eating places, but we were very pleased with what we had, and the service. It was a fairly quiet environment in which to eat, but that was fine for us.There were not too many people in when we ate, about 7.30, but it filled up later on.The staff were very nice, and help was on hand from them,if required. Although we live locally I had never considered eating here, but my wife had been on a previous occassion. We had no complaints

We attended this restaurant to top off a lovely weeks holiday. I can't remember the last time I was so disappointed in a restaurant. It bills itself as offering a dining experience. Well I suppose it was but not what I was expecting. We wee sat at a table beside a large group with children. The children had finished their meal and as they do, wanted to play in the restaurant. This was not discouraged and the noise was amplified by the continual sssshhhhhhhhh from a parent. On to the food. Neither of us wanted or liked the look of the starters, but you would think I had stolen a child from the waiter given the look I got. I ordered a steak, with no accompanying sauce....oops another child off the waiter. The steak was very small and was accompanied by oven chips not what was billed on the menu. The meal was vastly overpriced for the food and service supplied. Maybe they think they don't have to try as it's a world famous hotel, but sorry I won't be back and I will not be recommending either. I wrote to highlight the issues and got the most condescending letter I have ever received in response. I'm not finished there, the local tourist board and the professional restaurant critics are next!!

Visited today as a family and an 87 year old who was overawed at going to the Old Course Hotel. The waiter Jose was a complete joy, he was personable, kind and considerate and very efficient. The cake stands had 4 full slices of bread, sliced into quarters with, cream cheese/cucumber, ham and chutney, salmon and egg. (Bread was a wee bit hard)Middle stand had 4 miniature scones and 2 miniature lemon pancakesTop stand had mini trifles, stawberry tarts, sponges and macaroonsAll in all , food was just OK but not sensational.Tea selection was divine but I preferred coffee which was lovelyMum and I had 2 champagnes and my son had a coke.Would I go back, NO....Sands grill was dull had no view and had no atmosphere. Jose did say that the conservatory had a good view which would have been preferable but this isnt available at the weekend £102 for the bill, IMO, not worth it for food/drink but worth every penny to see my Mums face,

I am ever wary of ordering steak in the UK but happily made an exception here and ordered the rib-eye. It was juicy with excellent flavour although slightly smaller than I expected (no bad thing for me and not a complaint). The decor was suitably muted but inviting and walking down the corridor to the restaurant awe-inspiring as one looks up at the boards with the names of the past winners of the Open.I enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant which belies the hotel's exterior which is dire. I am mystified as to how planning consent was given to erect such an undistinguished structure on such a famous landmark.

For the location, price and reputation of the hotel, we were expecting more. There seemed to be a hard sell on getting us to upgrade to an afternoon tea with champagne. Service was friendly and professional, but not of an exceptionally high standard. Seemed to be a mix of servers who were experienced and others who were studying at the University.Tea cups were not warmed as already on the table and the tea itself was only just hot enough meaning that it had to be drunk quickly. Food itself was very good, but couldn't help but feel that we were on an afternoon tea production line, rather it being a differentiated or special experience.

This was a special occasion for my wife's birthday. Before dinner she had a Kohler Spa Treatment and I enjoyed the leisure facilities, so we were ready to try TheSands Grill for the first time and we were not disappointed. The courtesy of the welcome was matched by superb all round service. I started with the seafood chowder which was truly delicious and my wife had chicken Caesar salad, minus the anchovies which again was delicious. The lamb which followed was done to perfection. All round a most enjoyable experience which I would recommend.

Fabulous coffee .. with amazingly tasty brunches of Bombay eggs on bagels and a poached eggs on sourdough toast .. great service .. good location .. (bit cool on a cold day, but guessing it’s an expensive place to keep warm) .. one little pet dislike .. cold plates with hot food .. ok (ish) with the toasted bagel Bombay eggs, but poached eggs on toast would be better on warm plates … other than that it would have been a 5/5 🌟 …
