I have recently been diagnosed as coeliac and obviously miss having certain foods. I ordered via telephone a gluten free fish and chips with another order for hubby. The food was ordered for us to collect at 5.30pm, it was ready as we arrived to collect it, the gluten free food was well labelled so we definitely wouldn't get mixed up. Now to mention the meal. The fish had delicious crispy batter and the actual fish was amazing. I would definitely recommend anyone especially those with food allergies to go to Sandgate chippy for their takeaways.

I online ordered Gluten-free Cod and Chips and a Cod Lite Bite for my wife, both with Mushy Peas. It was delivered on time and was excellent . All well cooked and still really hot. Lite bite just right for my wife, the Gluten-free Cod was excellent, the best Gluten-free batter I have ever had , really light and crispy . The chips and mushy peas were really good too.

Collect at 6.25 they said and didn't get meal until l6.35...was more disappointed at quality of the food when I got home....some of the chips were like warm at best and the hotter ones undercooked and hard....batter rock hard...Well disappointed

Ordered online for a Saturday night chippy tea. Ready for me as soon as I collected. Got home, put my pjs on and sat down to eat my tea but unfortunately they’d forgot to pack my portion of chips! Called up and let them know, not only did they refund me but they also got a team member to deliver me a portion of chips within 30 minutes too. Great customer service on a busy Saturday night.

4th time that they have got our order wrong. Second time in 2 weeks that they have claimed not to have received the online order. First time it happened went to collect and it was closed. Second time our 11YO went inside to collect to be told they hadnt recieved order. Waited 20 mins, given wrong order, went inside to let them know to have to wait an extra 20 minites for again the wrong order.. recieved nect to nothing that i PAID for, but was given fries with our chips.. called up to complain and was told that if we came back tomorrow they would redo our order... half the food cold, not what we asked for and absolutely awful customer service from ALL. 0/10

Gave it a try on the basis of their claim to make "award winning" fish and chips, but I'd love to know exactly what this mysterious award was. Most disorganised service? Lumpiest curry sauce? Most re-fried chips? Looks promising from the outside, but once through the door, all became clear. Chaotic service (two different people queried incorrect orders while I was waiting) and food that I threw away when I got home. Curry sauce was coagulated and full of lumps, chips looked old and reheated, rice was dry and tasteless. Wish I'd bother to read the reviews before- won't be going again.

Poor. Ordered online and turned up bang on time. Fish wasn't fresh, You had ONE job - fresh fish'n'chips. Failed.

Poor customer service. Pre ordered a simple dinner, came for collection 25minutes later ,was told they will start making it now as they wanted payment over the phone, even though we had said we would pay cash. Poor attitude overall

Ordered takeaway. Order incorrect rang to ask for refund for missing items. They can't do refunds over the phone.. Just offered to email a voucher. But I won't be returning as its not the first time they have messed up. The chips where barely warm and had to ping in the microwave. Customer service goes a long way. Which unfortunately wasn't upto scratch.

We pre ordered 24 meals for our jubilee street party, delivered on time, all the meals hot and tasty, crispy fish, fresh chips , jumbo sausage and mushy peas. Everyone enjoyed them from 2 year olds to 83 year olds. Customer service second to none, thank you ,

We chose to buy fish and chips here because they do gluten free. To be fair the gluten free batter was good but the "cod" (I I use the word loosely because it was unlike any cod I have ever eaten before) was so tough that I couldn't even cut it with a knife and it certainly wasn't edible. My husband's portion of cod was 10% fish and 90% batter. Plus the mushy peas were stone cold. As to the price, we have never spent that much money on fish and chips before. I wouldn't begrudge the cost if the food had been good but that was money down the drain. We will certainly not be buying from there again

Sadly these were the worst fish and chips I’ve had, the fish was hard round the edges and the chips were dry. My husband and I couldn’t tell what fish was being served. but we strongly believe it wasn’t Haddock or Cod. Service was poor order taken via a hatch and you had to wait outside which was fair given covid etc but before we could ask for salt and vinegar the person serving walked off. We will not be using them again.

Love ordering a gluten free treat from this amazing chippy! Fish is always well cooked in gluten free batter, with gf chips etc. Always order alongside normal battered food and never is an issue. Even do gluten free children's fish bites! Both batters are nice and crispy. Only complain, although very small .... no gluten free gravy, chips and cheese!

£3.70 for large chips.....what a joke.....not even a normal regular portion, and they were cold and soggy. I will never go back there again. They should be ashamed to treat customers this way.

What a carry on, placed order for 2 Cumberland chips gravy, arrived all floating about in the bottom of the bag completely out of the containers so called asked for replacement, when the driver(boss) came to the door I showed him the mess and gave him the bag back, he then said you will have to take the sausages out of the bag and keep them as he had only brought chips and gravy as a replacement. Perplexed as to why he would want me to scoop out 2 sausages from the mess in the bottom of the bag I said I would like a replacement for those, he turned his back and walked away muttering "i have had enough, I don't want to know" WOW. needless to say I won't be using them again. Awful customer relations. This used to be such a great place for food once over. Not now.

Absolutely the worst chippy meal we have ever had. The size of a large portion of chips was a joke it was that small, though we wouldn't have thanked you for more as they were the driest stalest chips ever tasted, I'm actually in pain as I think one scratched my throat. The battered halloumi was overpriced undercooked and tasted of fish. What a complete waste of money, avoid avoid

We popped in for a large chips and a regular chips and the portions made me mad they were that pathetic. 6.50 and we could actually count 46 chips between the 2. Asked for salt and vinegar, barely put any on. Attitude is crap. The chips were dryer than my mother in laws sense of humour.

Excellent services phoned order in due to an allergy got Lucy who was friendly, helpful and knowledgeable what a lovely member of staff. Food was hot and tasty with a good size portion would highly recommend

We had tea from the Chippy Van. Am sorry but they were vile. Freezing cold, dry as a bone as if they had been sitting just kept luke warm for ages. The entire lot ended up in the bin and I can usually eat anything....

just bought two easy orders from here 1 chips with cheese and gravy 1 plain chips with jumbo sausage and two cartons of gravy the service here is awful having to state 3times what the orders were no one else waiting which says a lot...

Their cod and haddock are perfect with gorgeous batter. Cumberland sausage is proper local stuff...amazing. Don't go for a large portion unless you really mean it, portions are very generous!

What a delight to discover a chippy that has gluten free chips but the excitement to discover they have gluten free fish, pies , sausages, gravy and curry sauce too! I had chips, chicken pie and gravy. The pie was was great with homemade pastry...

We called in and got chicken & chips , they were fresh cooked & lovely, well worth a visit if your in penrith

Durch Zufall sind wir heute hier gelandet und hatten Lust auf Fish and Chips. Der Fisch ist sehr zu empfehlen, sehr zart und die Panade genau richtig Cross und würzig. Aber auch die Pommes suchen ihres Gleichen. Diese sind frisch aus der Kartoffel geschnitten und ein wahrer Gaumenschmaus.

Great freshly cooked food. Friendly staff. The food is cooked to order so you do have to wait for your order but well worth it.

They do gluten free fish and chips and other goodies....all day...everyday.

Ordered chip, cheese and curry sauce. The guy serving didn't give me the change I was owed. Then he asked if I would like anything else, so I stated the obvious, and asked for the cheese. Got home (not even a minute walk) to find the chips stone cold, had to microwave it to be edible!!! Twice I've been now, should have learnt the first time

The food was freshly cooked and I was able to order a small portion, which was more than adequate. Quality of the food was very good and the service cheerful.

They are now doing gluten free every day. Fish, pies, etc. I had fish, chips and mushy peas. All freshly cooked and lovely. Worth a visit.

Considering this is an award winning fish and chip shop we were left very underwhelmed. The haddock was frozen??then dipped in batter and deep fried. When we got home only a few minutes later the fish was barely warm in the middle and the batter was very soggy. The chips weren't hot either. I threw my fish in the bin. I certainky won't be returning.

Arrived at 4.30 pm on New Years Eve and ordered fish, chips and peas.When I started to eat the food I discovered that the chips were not at all hot and the fish was raw in the middle. Peas were OK.I don't like leaving bad reviews but this is the first time in over 50 years of eating fish and chips that I have been given raw fish.Suggest they turn it into a sushi bar. Until then I'll keep away from the Sandgate Friern.

Expected better with the mentions of awards but I'm guessing the judges weren't served the chips I was. Very dark and seemingly reheated then soggy to try and eat. Also, if other chip shops can find potatoes that don't have black bits in most chips why can't this place?

Lots of claims of awards won over the years plastered around the place ,must have been some time ago judging my the fair served up to me.fish ok but batter not crisp enough ,nothing chips with little flavour.also having to listen to tales of the servers love live while being ignored did not help my experience .

Every Tuesday night the best fish and chips in town!! Gluten free batter is crispy, tasty, not greasy even my hubbie has it now. It is awesome. We have this as a treat every couple of weeks. Brilliant thank you.

Simply wonderful chips and homemade pie, plus lots of friendly banter from the staff. Can not be beaten in Penrith.

These guys have a gluten free fish and chip night every Tuesday, which is fantastic. You get a choice of about 5 different fish you can have gluten free, and the chips (and salt and vinegar) can all be gluten free that night too! The fish was incredibly tender and the batter was lovely and crisp, and the chips were very tasty too. Highly recommended.

Pretty awful to be honest. Greasy mess. Cold peas. Dont care attitude from staff. Oh and the fish cakes are to be avoided like the plague.

We often get gluten free fish and chips on a Tuesday night. Only night of week they do it. They are wonderful. Crispy light batter, fresh chips and fab mushy peas. Recommend all coeliacs to try them. Hubbie now prefers them to ordinary.

Fish and batter were soggy. Chips were the same. Young lad serving couldn't careless. Just slapped in a tray was to busy messin about in background with work colleagues. Much better places in town.
