Saltwater Beach Cafe in Southend-on-Sea

Very busy so be prepared to queue but worth the wait and the staff are very pleasant and kind. Clean place too. All different types of food and drinks, plus ice creams. Sells buckets/spades/crabbing lines and jewellery too.

Used to really like it here, would ride down here every Sunday and have the vegan breakfast bowl. Came here this morning though and they’ve stopped doing it. The non meat menu now isn’t anywhere near as good. The drink and food also came out separately. Had the vegan sausage sandwich, was ok but not worth £5.50 add a latte to that and it’s an expensive breakfast.

I had my 30th birthday party at Saltwater Beach Cafe and it was the perfect venue for it! Liz was super helpful throughout the planning process - open and flexible to anything I wanted to do. On the night itself the staff were amazing and all my guests couldn’t stop going on about how good the canapés were!

Absolutely perfect evening, great service and great food. The burgers and chips were perfect. Just back from Belgium, the fries capital of the world! and the chips tonight were on par with the ones we had in Belgium ❤️

We were walking passed and popped in for lunch. Really surprised of the choice of the menu as we were expecting the normal fast food but there was a lovely choice of healthy food as well which was made fresh to order. Friendly, helpful staff and great food. Will definitely be back.

We have just had the most AMAZING burger at Saltwater Cafe; it’s a special Friday evening menu from, I believe, 4:30. Honestly the best burger I’ve ever had; the bacon jam & Parmesan chips were incredible too. Plus a beautul sunset, what more do you want 🩷

I hardly ever write reviews but in is worthy of it. Arrived at cafe at about around 2.55. Asked the assistant on arrival if they were serving food. She clearly said ‘yes’. I got in the queue and waited my turn - only 2 groups in front, only to be to told about 5 minutes later that the kitchen was now closed, and the chef and another member of staff (who I had spoken to at first) had now gone home. I also checked the website in the queue to firm up mt menu choices - this shows kitchen closes at 3.30, but was later told this was unreliable. So annoying - all they need to do is clearly state when the kitchen closes and that if you are still in the queue at that point you will not be served (!) Not good business though. Had perents with me, so got back in the car and drove just down the road where I knew they would be open and glad of the custom and was happily served a similar thing. Wont be returning. I have been many times for coffee and the odd snack in the past.

The staff are so friendly here, even when they're busy. Service with a smile. We had lovely smoked salmon bagels.

Had lovely fish finger sandwich and my partner a toasted tea cake. Both very tasty. Very pleasant staff- a great find. We’ll be back!

Lovely food and great value too! Perfect for lunch after a sea walk. The fish finger sandwich was awesome - so good I swear I saw Captain Birdseye himself queuing for one !

My friends and I took a paddleboarding taster session today in Hadleigh Country Park with instructor Jeff for my 40th birthday experience and it was absolutely brilliant! Wish I’d done it sooner. I’d highly recommend it as the session itself is fantastic and you get plenty of time to get on the water so it gives you a great idea of the activity, and Jeff was great, making sure we were all happy, his instructions were clear and we had a fab time. We will definitely be back. Thank you!

Had a lesson at Hadleigh, everything set up ready for you, clear explanation of how to get started, styles, manoeuvres and safety. Jeff is very professional at explaining everything, and very patient with a real novice. Best of all it was a great fun experience. Will definitely be back for more practice as we both need it.

Love this place. Come here most Sunday mornings. I buy a vegan breakfast bowl or bagel and a latte and sit on the sea wall with it. Staff are lovely and the quality of the food is excellent. Very often vegan food is just thrown together but they really put a lot of effort into it. Sitting outside there as we speak.

Absolutely great session, would fully recommend to anyone looking at trying their hand at paddle boarding. Our instructor, Steve, was calm and engaging when teaching us the basic techniques Felt incredibly safe and thoroughly enjoyed the session!

Fishfinger sandwiches were nice BUT we ate on public benches as the outdoor seating area is so poor. Few tables on area that needs weeding and jet washing. A few umbrellas and a couple of planters, hide the bins and it would be transformed! Missed business opportunity as if it had been nice we would have stayed and had wine etc. Could be so much nicer!!

I done the beginners taster paddle boarding. The session was amazing & fun, the instructor was very helpful and has alot of knowledge. Would definitely recommend😊 plus the staff at the cafe were lovely too

We visit here a lot with the dogs and always enjoy the vegan options, including a sausage baguette and breakfast bagel. Always tasty, hot and fresh. The coffee is good too and you can get a vegan hot chocolate with all the trimmings. Service is friendly and staff are lovely. Can't recommend enough.

Popped in for lunch after a short walk. Staff very friendly and helpful. Moved tables to accommodate us. Lovely bagels smoked salmon and cream cheese and salt beef with pickles. Home cooked salt beef was delicious. Nice cup of tea. Would definitely come again.

I ordered the vegan breakfast bowl and the green smoothie and both were amazing! They also have a cute little beach shop inside which has gorgeous rings! Everything was affordable and tasted amazing, will 100% be returning!

I visited the cafe today with my children for ice cream and coffee. Coffee I have to say is the best oat latte I’ve had, I’ve cream always a winner from here but the staff are always so cheerful, chatty and polite. Xx

The welcome, like the food is always great. The service is exceptional, even in these socially distanced take away times. Two hungry cyclists are accommodated perfectly every visit. I am always impressed by the food and the staff.

Having walked from Thorpe Bay yesterday afternoon we were pleased to see Saltwater Cafe still open for Takeaway. So many other cafe’s seemed to close early.We joined a well mannered, and socially distanced queue, were greeted with a big smile, and pleased to buy good coffee, and a lovely Rasperry Flapjack. We sat on the Seawall watching the brave swimmers - it was cold, and blowy.Very pleased to support a local business during these difficult times!

Our family visit Saltwater Beach cafe often when walking our dog along the beach. Friendly staff, great food and drink. They have a good vegan selection for drinks, snacks and hot/cold food. I would highly recommend this cafe x

This place has literally got me through and kept me sane during lockdown #1 and so far #2. I never go to anywhere else along the beach, it is the absolute best. Perfect location, reasonable prices and super fresh made to order food. A walk along the beach or esplanade with a coffee in hand is the best therapy you will probably get this year! They are so accommodating too with dietary requirements. The staff are super friendly and the place has really become a staple of the community. The brunch bagel has also cured a few of my hangovers, and our young son thinks the sausage baguettes are the best thing ever! Not forgetting the Buddha Bowls are dreamy on a hot summers day! All topped off by the fact Fabio the coffee king of the local area is now working here churning out perfect coffee.

Visited on second day of second lockdown and was so pleased to see Saltwater Cafe open for takeaway coffees, ice creams and treats. Ordering and collecting all done the correct way following guidelines and guidance with friendly staff to serve you. Well done Saltwater, a little bit of normal in a not so normal time!

A visit to Saltwater always brightens up our day. Liz, Jeff and their team work super hard and we’re always greeted with a happy, smiley face, whatever the weather, and whatever’s going on in these difficult times.Saltwater was a ray of sunshine for us during the first lockdown and continues to be for lockdown 2. Last spring they took every measure to ensure that when they could reopen, initially for takeaways only, that safety came first. It became part of our daily ritual to grab a coffee and sit and watch the world go by on the seafront.The café has such a different and chilled vibe to it…. we spend a lot of time in Australia (well, we used to!) and Saltwater always reminds us of one of our favourite beach cafes there. And the coffee is the best in town… hands down!Thank you Liz & Jeff for what you have created there.

We’ve loved seeing the Saltwater Cafe grow, especially over lockdown! They’re a super friendly cafe, have brilliant Covid measures in place and serve amazing coffee! We always stop off on our regular sea side walks and beach trips. I’ve heard they’ve got some plans for some new themed nights to commence after lockdown and I can’t wait to give these a try! Keep up the excellent work!

Fantastic position the service was exceptional, such friendly and informed staff. The quality of the products served were spot on.

My friend and I had been walking and found this cafe - thought would be nice to get a coffee and snack. We went to the window .. nobody attended us at all we were stared at by customers inside. My friend shouted yoo hoo at the window and a lady appeared and disappeared as quickly. We found out that it was open so went inside. My friend asked if it was waitress service and was told yes go sit down I'll come over. Nobody came. We had no menu... we had no service. We stood up and tried to locate someone.... my friend spoke to a lad behind the bar asking about the specials on the board... he said I can't hear you with a mask and the music is too loud!!! They control the volume right? She came back shaking her head. We found a menu but realised after a while it was a children's one..... I went hunting around other tables and found another menu. Still had not been attended to by any member of staff. We eventually stood up disillusioned and put our coats on and I noticed one staff member pointing to us as if to say 'is anybody going to go to them?' then when she saw we were unhappily leaving she said oh no matter... and was obviously happy to see us leave. DISGUSTING! WILL NEVER RETURN AND WILL BROADCAST THIS TO ALL! It comes to something when cafe's are so affluent during the pandemic that they don't want customers!

What a lovely little find. Great service and nice selection of food. Serving staff were really friendly and knew there stuff when asking about vegan and vegetarian options. Nice modern fresh feel to the venue. Table space is limited even without the COVID restrictions. Nicely decorated and was good to see that the cooking and prep area was open so you could see, but it did clash a little with the rest of the decor, bit too industrial looking for my taste. Portion sizes were decent so much so that I had to ask for a box for my chips to take away after my sit down meal, which the serving team happily provided. Was nice to see a few bits on sale with a beech theme. Also there were a selection of game and blankets that customers could make use of which was a lovely touch. Overall really good experience made by the good food and lovely staff.

I had the english breakfast and it was terrible.hash browns still frozen insidecold baked beans the toast was warm bread egg had bits of spinach in it and wasnt just broken - it was a complete messthey took the price of a tea and coffee off the bill when i complained - but it really was the worst breakfast i have ever been served I will not be returning here

I've been here before but before a blustery walk along Chalkwell seafront father and I wanted refreshment takeaway. Their latte and cappuccino are very nice coffees. But we were recommended by a family in front of us the flapjacks. They are delicious. Great venue, great service, good food and drink.

Well done to the Satlwater Cafe as they are not only a cafe but they bring the community together from holding workshops and morning walks to their paddle boarding sessions...not only an amazing cafe serving great food for all diets including gluten free which is a rare find these days....they are a lovely, hardworking team who I hope continue what they are doing despite these very difficult times for us all particularly for businesses like the saltwater cafe...we had nothing before they arrived and we cannot let them go! xx

Such a wonderful location for a really eco aware café. The choice of food and drink is excellent and very reasonable. The staff are friendly, cheerful and can’t do enough to welcome and make their customers feel at home. They are very aware of the various communities who use their premises - from families, paddle boarders, litter pickers, crafters, individuals, walkers etc. All these groups are a testament to the need for such a welcoming place and this café does not disappoint. We used to visit this place before lockdown. The ambience,food & service were always top notch. We have been back several times over the past two weeks & I'm pleased to report that the food is still excellent. They have had to close the indoor area, but there is a good in/out system in place for ordering & collecting food in two separate areas, with sanitizer available at both points. There is also plenty of outdoor seating. I had the smoked salmon & cream cheese bagel & it was packed with good quality salmon. Also highly recommend the brunch bagel..bacon, avocado & dijon mustard..delicious. Oh & a great selection of scoop ice cream flavours! Definitely recommend this place!

I have always lived in and around Leigh on Sea. But it’s rare you find a little treat like Saltwater Beach Cafe. The strange goings on in the world brought me to the beach a lot more than I had done in the years I have lived opposite it. I stopped in for a quick coffee and now am like a yo-yo keep going back, the gelato is ridiculous, amazing flavours and it’s all original natural ingredients. The Buddha Bowl is great for lunch or if you fancy something a bit more on the sea side buzz the fish-finger bagel is so tasty with their home made Tatar sauce. For a sea side cafe it’s a different level to most, you can still get your crabbing lines, buckets and spades and fishing nets and they even sell the bacon to catch the little fellas. The staff are all smiley and friendly and they have sorted the caution levels put in place with the crazy Covid. Finally they have an attached Stand Up Paddle board business that I for my sins have signed up for. Let’s hope I survive it to head back for my fish finger sandwich next week after the lesson. I have never been a great swimmer.

I totally love this place, beautiful location, environmentally aware business who always go above and beyond for customers and the local space. They have fab products, great food and drinks, really lovely staff and not to mention the Paddleboarding and various workshops organised. This is a real hub in the local beach community and is without doubt one of the best cafes on our beachfront. If you have not visited then you are missing out. I truly love their Oat Milk Coffee and their fab range of Smoothies. Go visit them and enjoy a bit of our lovely beach culture.

We go down the saltwater cafe regularly most Sundays (ten of us). I went down there today with my daughter and had one coffee, one tea and two bagels. At this point we were very happy with the service and the food - Although its over priced... But we know they are expensive (so five stars at this point)Unfortunately we asked for some tomato ketchup for our bagels. At this point they said "that will be 20p". I simply do not understand how any cafe can have the audacity to charge for condiments considering that you can buy a bottle for 90p. I understand times are tough at the moment, but this is an utter farce. So because of this they are now one star and we will be buying our coffees from chalkwell Station and walking them down to the beach. My advice would be if you need 20p so badly for ketchup this should be accommodated for within the price of the bagel. To avoid losing customers like myself.

What can I say?! Saltwater is the best. It is not just our favourite cafe on the seafront it is also an extremely valued community hub. Not only do they provide us with the best ever coffee and delicious food they include everyone; they reach out for people to do beach cleans, teach SUP, organise mindful craft sessions, invite people that are on their own to go and meet others by going on weekly walks. They are a firm part of our local community and our lives are richer for them. Thank you Saltwater! Wendy

What a super little cafe for outside eats and coffee. They sell for just about every taste. I do think it’s the best oat milk coffee in Leigh on sea.This is now our regular stop. Very friendly and knowledgeable staff and owners.They have adapted the take away and outside area to feel very safe. It is busy on hot days but that’s the sea front. Hope it’s not too long before inside opens again.Well done for keeping us all smiling. Love this place.

We are regulars at the Saltwater and it’s the place first I went to after lockdown to get that long anticipated takeaway coffee, because I knew that the Saltwater would do everything 100% safely as well as delivering ethically sourced, delicious food and drinks. I’ve been very impressed with how this popular cafe has risen to the challenge of becoming Covid compliant and of dealing with the many visitors the recent heatwaves and lack of foreign holidays have delivered to the area.

Queued for 25mins. Cold drinks where warm. When asked if there where colder at the back simply said no, didn’t even check not exactly what you want on a boiling hot day, warm bottled water. Then took a further 10 mins of waiting to get 1 portion of chips. £22 for 3 warm drinks 1 portion of chips and 6 fruit ice lollies and 35mins of waiting don’t recommend and won’t be going back.

A lovely atmosphere in the cafe. The staff are pleasant and helpful. Quite a suitable choice of cakes and snacks plus it's nice coffee. Feel welcome.

A friend and I stopped here for lunch. Lovely varied menu with some really unusual specials. We both chose the quinoa and sweet potato salad which was delicious but the sandwiches being served at another table also looked very inviting. Friendly helpful staff made us very welcome. Will definitely visit again.

This place has an awesome homemade breakfast of eggs bene' and asparagus, salmon, on a croissant and good coffee , thoroughly recommend it

Stopped in for lunch at the saltwater beach cafe. Coffee and a toasted sandwich. Was served with crisps?? As listed on menu, so no surprise. Looked homemade, but were greasy and completely tasteless. £8 seemed quite expensive for small sized coffee and toastie.

Just had a wonderful lunch here - my husband had the soup which was obviously homemade and so tasty. I had the burger and it was premium meat served with homemade coleslaw and salad - I finished every morsel. The service from the girls there was fab, the ambience was great - I can’t rate this place highly enough. Just tasty homemade food and great service - we will be back - thank you Saltwater Cafe - very very impressed

We have been a few times, and it never disappoints. This time I chose the Buddha Bowl, and couldn't believe how tasty it was, a wonderful fusion of scrummy flavours, and vegan too! I also had a lovely oat milk latte, made just how I like it. We then took a walk along the beach and back on this beautiful sunny day, and returned for another coffee and a delicious vegan flapjack.

I was in that area for business and had lunch here as local people recommended it. I had on salad to take away and I must say it was delicious. It can be tricky to find a tasty healthy food but I was not disappointed and enjoyed my lunch very much. If I’m in that area again, I’ll definitely go back!

Just wanted to say thanks for a lovely visit again! The location is perfect feels like you're on holiday when you're there with the sea so near. Staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food is delicious. They really try to cater for everyone with vegan and gluten free options and lots of healthy options too. It's so nice to relax here!

We come here throughout the summer. Sometimes for a meal, other times just for a coffee.

Have been keen to try Saltwater Cafe for some time. Our experience here was far from the glowing reviews we have seen. Ordered and paid for our lunch, was then told that one of the lunches was sold out, so another choice was made, which was lower in price. There was no offer of a refund on the price difference, so asked for the refund. This was not well received, but eventually was sorted out. Meals came, however, the child’s cheese sandwich came up as 2 slices of cheese on toast, we pointed out that this should be a sandwich for a child, so the server sighed and said well don’t you want it toasted then, after we pointed out this was not suitable for young children she went back. She returned with a cheese sandwich more suited to an adult as it was doorstep bread, which we accepted as we were pretty fed up by now. Started eating my Ploughman’s and then noticed spots of mould along one side of the cheddar cheese, then to top it off there was a strip of cling film in the cheese sandwich. Thankfully the sandwich was being cut into small pieces for my very young grandchildren, could easily caused chocking if the cling film hadn’t been noticed.

Big shout out to this fantastic cafe! Such accommodating staff, offering a fantastic range of food and drinks. Son who has dairy restrictions can get vegan magnums, Walls vegan cones and sorbets there. Lots of vegan food options if you want them. Made tea for me in my own takeaway cup, refilled our water bottles. Fish finger sarnie was beautiful, stuffed with salad and delicious tartare sauce. Thank you for making our fab beach day even better!

I am totally blown away by the great vegan food in the UK and Saltwater Beach Cafe is no exception. We had the Buddha bowl and Falafel wrap and both were a big hit. We’ll be back for sure.

We passed the Saltwater Beach Cafe actually intending to go to another nearby cafe, but they were closed. So we came back to the Saltwater and we're glad we did. The menu is not huge (easier to choose!), and the options are interesting and imaginative. We had a Buddha bowl, ploughman's lunch and a vegan burger (vegan dishes feature prominently, but not exclusively). We all agreed that the meals were tasty and good value. I think the vegan burger was the best I've tasted. Two of us had cake with a green tea and coffee. The coffee was excellent and the green tea was made with first class matcha. The staff were friendly and helpful. To sum up: great food, great service, friendly and relaxed. Well worth a visit.

Two of us enjoyed our coffees in a piece of Apple crumble cake too. Just what we wanted at the time. The ladies in there are very polite and helpful.

After a long walk along the sea wall, we stopped here (at this ideally placed cafe) for a late lunch and drinks. Unfortunately, the place was closing earlier than expected, so we only had drinks - food was not available - which was a shame. The girl in the cafe was cheerful and helpful, You will need to check that this cafe is open before walking there!

We arrived first thing for a family breakfast! Coffee was tasty and the breakfast was huge! We had salmon breakfast special, vegan breakfast and avocado on toast! Delicious! Xxx

My mum and I were on our walk. The cafe had a really long queue for ice creams, but going inside to order coffees was fine. Good service and refreshments.

Delicious food and, though not the cheapest, it was generous portions and good value. It's a bit limited for space inside so, if it's not good weather, you might have to wait for a table but I'm sure it's worth the wait.

My wife and I remembered this place from visiting on the Leigh Art Trail. On a chilly day the hot coffee and Raspberry & Almond Flapjack and Apple & Clove Crumble were lovely. Polite staff. Clean and tidy. Nicely decorated. Highchair available for little ones. I'd recommend this cafe to anyone.

My friend and I went on a walk from the Saltwater Beach Cafe and stopped there for a coffee afterwards. Not only was the coffee delicious but the owner and staff really friendly and chatty. Would really recommend. The food looked great too, so must stay for lunch next time ...

This was pour first visit to Saltwater and we had an enjoyable lunch in pleasant surroundings with halpful and cheerful staff. Two cappucinos, Smoked Salmon, 2 Poached Eggs, Wilted Spinach on Sourdough Bread/Thai Green Curry - all for £22.00. Many thanks all!

Went here today for lunch with the girls and our little ones.

We just walked out from old Leigh & were looking for an ice cream. Stopped here. Sort of place you know as soon as you walk in someone takes care. Well presented. Attentive staff offering good advice & service. Ice creams were lovely. Coffee to follow was also superb. Delivered to the table. Table tidied by staff - again just little touches to show they care about the customer experience. Will be coming back.

Let's start this off with I went in as I liked the sound of the Buddah bowls but alas they were not on so I chose another option. I am a harsh critic of places, as evident in a lot of my reviews, but when a place is as good as it's word and offers something other than the mundane, drab, dull and mindless stuff that most people are content with I will give a positive response.

I love this cafe. Bright and cheerful lovely staff who are always helpful and professional. I really love the coffee they serve. Great taste and not weak. Food is great to, I am yet to try their breakfast, thats on my to-do list. Highly recommended.

I fancied a non-dairy latte, and asked what milk alternatives they have. The waiter was so helpful, explaining that oat milk should be good for me, as I do not like a coffee that is sweet. He was spot on, it was perfect. We sat out the front, overlooking the sea, and thoroughly enjoyed our latte and cappuccino, and scrummy flapjack.

Love this cafe. Food, coffee and friendly staff, definitely make this one of my favourite places to visit.

A leisurely walk along the front - away from all the crowds in Old Leigh - and we came across this friendly establishment. We had a variety of light snacks - the bagels and sandwiches were delicious - my grandson loved his pancakes and my granddaughter polished off bowl of chips when she finished with the colouring book and crayons provided by the cafe. Plenty of outside seating - limited indoor seating. Super friendly and helpful staff.

Lovely cafe close to the beach. Child friendly with books and games for them to play with. Dog friendly- bowls of water provided. Excellent coffee and delicious ice cream. The toilet was clean and easily accessible. The staff were friendly and helpful. What more could you want. Hope to be there again

Walked here from leigh on sea and what a treat, decided to rest our legs, and we couldn't have chosen a better place, having never been here before, but frequently visit leigh on sea, thought we'd give it a go, as it looked nice on the outside, and it was delightful, lovely friendly staff, great coffee, and afterwards great icecream, loads of flavours, will definetly come here for a meal next time

We've been regular visitors since the Cafe re-opened in the Spring after a refit. It's become a family favourite for breakfast or brunch. The food is always excellent and the service is always friendl. The coffee is great too and there is a good range of drinks for the kids. Theres a good range of beach essentials available to buy as well and its great to see the owners taking a real community interest as well, most recently supporting the beach cleans

Love saltwater. Great food. Great staff. Great ethos. We are lucky to have a community focussed place that does such yummy breakfast and cakes. Oh and ice cream!!

We recently held a fundraising evening here for a local preschool. The Cafe provided an amazing tapas menu accompanied by the perfect glass of wine. You cannot beat the setting or the service, a very enjoyable evening!

Saltwater is a beautiful bright space serving gorgeous food and just the best ice creams and coffees. Not only that, the guys there are passionate about the environment and our local beaches. They support beach-clean activities and use recyclable and biodegrable products for take-aways. You could no better than this lovely place.

My sister in law & I are regular visitors to Saltwater & we couldn’t recommend it highly enough. Friendly efficient staff every time we’ve been & the food & coffee is always fab!

Saltwater Beach Cafe ticks so many boxes for me: pleasant staff, original sandwiches and parsnip crisps, delicious and unique ice cream flavours and wonderful beverages. Food, staff, atmosphere and coffee always fantastic! Lovely cafe in a great spot, doing their bit to provide a great service, as well as organising beach cleans and SUP classes - lovely community-spirited cafe!

On a hot Saturday afternoon by the beach, what could be better than a delicious ice cream served with a smile? This cafe puts Chalkwell beach on the map: it serves great food at very reasonable prices, provides beach toys, quality drinks and sunscreen and has plenty of healthy options to rival greasy chips! Definitely worth a visit.
