Flour and Spoon - Artisan Bakery & Cafe in Southend-on-Sea

I was booked on a bakery course to make Macarons on 17th March 2024. The class was cancelled a couple of days before by the owner. I have repeatedly phoned and emailed requesting a refund but have not had a money back and no apology. Would never use again.

I buy all our breads and cakes from here as they are amazing and made fresh. We really love to sit in and have coffee and sourdough toasties and cake. We also love eastwood shop and had their sourdough pizza last month, absolutely amazing taste. Dog friendly too

Gorgeous place, with attention to detail and presentation. My husband and I both had delicious coffees and even better sourdough toasties, made with their award winning Essex sourdough bread. Followed by a yummy brownie. Staff, Rom and Cathy were super friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Will be again soon ☕️ 🧁 🥪 🥰

This artisan bakery is a real gem and situated not so far from Belfairs Woods. The food and beverages are simply delicious. The staff are helpful, friendly and very welcoming. The cakes are top notch as is all of the bakery. There are also other delicious foodstuffs available such as terrines to name but one. I also recently undertook a course at the Flour and Spoon in macaron baking. Anita who was the instructor has fifteen years baking experience both national and international. Her instruction was just brilliant. I learnt so much from her which has boosted my confidence and baking skills. Please do make a visit to eat in, make a purchase or attend a baking course. You won’t be disappointed.

We had lunch here today. Lovely tasty sourdough melt with ham and cheese. We also had coffee and cake. Staff are wonderful and polite. Tom makes lovely ☕️ coffee. Try their Eastwood shop too xx

We went to the branch by Belfairs on the way to the airport to pick up some coffees and cakes, my 3 year old needed the toilet and they refused to let her use them and said they are for staff only. In a place that’s serving food and drinks I’m surprised that you won’t let a 3 year old use your facilities. You’d hope most people would have common sense and let a child use the bathroom. It’s those little things that make you use (or not use) a business again. Not family friendly, would not recommend.

We popped in for some cake and they did look delicious but are left uncovered and there were a couple of little flies hanging about so we chose something else instead.We had sausage rolls which were lovely,big and very filling and had hot chocolates too as they are made with the Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser.A nice little place with friendly staff.

Me and my husband came in earlier in the week. The place was pretty quiet we sat down and enjoyed a coffee and cake which was very pleasing. Our coffee break was however disturbed by this rather obnoxious man who I believe was the owner. I heard him mutter racial slurs to members of the staff to do with how people of colour should be ordering banana bread!! The fact he found this amusing and his staff appeared not to was both shocking and disturbing!! We will not be coming back however good it may have been! Racism in this day and age and in the public eye is a disgrace!

Great food and the friendliest staff you can get. Went for the full on treatment as we have had the food before. Sausage Roll first followed by the Brie and smoked bacon toastie followed by the lemon drizzle cake… fantastic quality. Also the coffee is brilliant. We sat inside and ended up sitting outside to people watch… fantastic. Got a couple of sourdough loaves to take away… the bread from here is another trip entirely: it makes the best sandwiches but when you toast this stuff it’s absolutely amazing … worth paying the extra penny and going the extra mile. Very impressed a real find!

My naturopath recommended The Flour and Spoon due to some sensitivities to yeast and I ordered two different sourdough breads, both of which are delicious! This was my first experience of Roman's breads. I love their ethos, and I definitely will be ordering regularly.

Attended the Sour Dough Baking Course, what a great Course. Roman took his Tim explained everything and demonstrated the methods. We made Sour Dough Loaves and Bagels, I must say I was impressed with the results. Any support you need is only an email away or you can pop in, highly recommended. Lunch was even better! Choice of vegetarian or sausage roll pear and almond tart, coffee... what's not to like

Very friendly people, nice enough to get my pizza going a little before 6 as I arrived a little early. Very good choice of pizzas and mine was delicious. Wonderful bread and cakes too in a relaxed environment. I'll be back for sure!

I live locally so this is an easy place for me to get to. The coffee is delicious and they are happy to make it a little hotter, just the way I like it. The bread is at is most scrummy when eaten warm, and of course I can do that the following day at home too. Picked up some raspberry jam this weekend, a little runny but made a perfect sauce for the chocolate cake I had made. Also bought their Marmalade & Whiskey Marmalade which was not only perfect for their sour dough bread but I also used it on a ginger cracker with cream cheese topped with a chunky spoonful of marmalade. Yum!I have always loved a homemade bakery ever since as a child I used to pick up all the bakery from Cottis The Bakers in Billericay for my mum's cafe. The smell of fresh bread carefully made through the night really does it for me!

This was my first visit and won't be my last. Lovely food and service and very good value. Highly recommended.

I’ve thought really hard as to whether to write a review but I feel it is so essential for the owner to read honest reviews as everyone was so chatty and approachable until now and I hope this can be restored. Everyone has been so lovely and welcoming. I was up until yesterday a regular customer of this cafe. Nice, well decorated, cosy great coffee (I can’t eat a lot of foods so don’t eat cake however does look beautiful) and the staff was always friendly and could hold nice conversations and respectful. I’ve been going through treatment this past year and always felt so comfortable and it was my relax haven. I came into to get a coffee to take walking club with me, it wasn’t the usual lady that serves me but another. I waited so long for my coffee and when the other lady who came from the kitchen politely and kindly chased it up for me she was told I had to wait my turn. I understand that however I was waiting sometime and felt this stand offish, they will get it when they get attitude is not acceptable especially as it was never like it prior to this visit. Extremely saddened! Before I come in future I will check who it is that is serving. Although saddened by my experience i wish the owner all the best as it maybe what he wants to move away from how the relaxing haven it was to an urban hip cafe.

Me and my partner go to this bakery all the time. We love all the staff there and the food is excellent!! We end up overstaying our welcome each time as we love it so much here. We think it's the best coffee in Leigh and Southend. All the bread is baked every day and is amazing. Nick makes all the cakes and they are amazing too! We made an order of cakes and sausage rolls at our wedding and everyone enjoyed them more than our wedding cake! They have plenty of other foods to buy like jars of jams and chutneys, I have bought a few for my own christmas hampers. The food for lunches are really delicious and they make their own pizzas to eat in or take away Saturday night. They do sell smaller breads for 80p and they are great too. Nick is making Christmas cakes and chocolate log cake to pre order for Christmas at reasonable prices. Why buy a shop bought cake when you can have a freshly made one. Roman takes bakery classes which people love to do and it's an amazing experience. This place is dog and children friendly and all are welcome. So go in and try everything!

I came to this bakery as I was walking around Leigh today. picked up a loaf of rye bread. I was happy with what I got and then outstanding customer service was demonstrated. I don’t normally bother with reviews but this warranted it. A lady who served me then served an elderly gentleman who clearly was confused. She sat him down, got him some water, went through the choice of cake available brought him his drink, made sure he was comfortable and had bundles of patience and empathy. He was talking away and she took time out of what was a busy time to talk to him and keeping the smile. That few minutes has probably made his week. If only more people was like this and demonstrated this level of customer service and professionalism. When I asked her name she smiled and looked a little confused but don’t worry I got your name for this review reason to tell your boss you are a credit and asset to this team dillarna.

Popped into flour and spoon for some sourdough breadcrumbs. Unfortunately they were sold out. I decided to have a coffee and whilst I was enjoying my coffee outside in the sun Dylana made two bags of breadcrumbs for me. I was over the moon as I wanted to make cauliflower spicy vegan wings. I had used these breadcrumbs previously and they were fab. Also Dylana informed me that Saturday eve they had pizza on offer vegan option also. Can’t get any better than that. I will be booking a table soon. Thank you Dylana much appreciated.

The Flour and Spoon Artisan Bakery and Cafe’ is located in the Elm Road one way system. Next to the old Post Office and opposite Squeeze.

My husband and I attended this course together and had a brilliant day. We made one white sourdough loaf, two wholemeal sourdough (one with walnuts the other with mixed seeds) and four sourdough bagels each (with different toppings) and the results were impressive and very tasty. Roman is passionate about baking and good bread and this comes across in his teaching, he clearly takes great pride in what he does and you feel privileged to have him share his knowledge. Nick was busy making sure we had all the equipment we needed, rustling up the food for us and the cafe for the for the following week and is equally as enthusiastic. I have looked at many bread making courses and this is excellent value for money for what you learn and get to take home, including your own starter, which you have to nurture, plus we had the most amazing pizzas mid afternoon to keep us going. I'd recommend this cafe for it's coffee, teas and produce anyway, but the course is excellent, whether for yourself or as a treat or for someone you love, who loves to bake. We have demolished one loaf and six bagels already and the rest are in the freezer, which I doubt will be in there long. The guys told us they have recently been selling the pizzas, during a limited time frame, on a Saturday evening and I urge you to try them, you won't be disappointed.

I stumbled across this cafe and bakery whilst walking around Leigh today. Well let me tell you, it did not disappoint. The staff were lovely and nothing was a problem for them. I was intrigued by sourdough. The baker took the time to tell me all about sourdough and explained the process. To find out that the bread is all made and baked there has really really impressed me. I sat had a coffee which was divine and tucked into some raspberry cake which again all made at the premises. I don’t often sit in cafes for a long period of time due to feeling alone however I felt so comfortable I. This cosy, clean and super friendly establishment. I attended the one-day sourdough baking course at The Flour & Spoon yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed the day. The small group format encouraged banter and interaction and I was lucky to be with such fun people. Roman was a great teacher and his passion for baking proper bread came through. We produced two loaves and 4 bagels each by the end of the day and what I achieved having never made bread before was nothing short of miraculous. For lunch, Nick served up the best tasting pizzas I’ve had in ages (they’ve just started serving up pizzas in the evenings and I’m sure this is really going to take off).

After noticing this delightful cafe in Leigh on sea we decided to stop for a coffee and snacks . First impression very clean and lovely looking food , we were the only two in the cafe as it is off the main drag. Ordered our food and sat down , coffee served with cake promptly. My bagel however did not arrive , after 22 mins I asked the waitress if the Bagel was being freshly baked? She went to check and said the order had not been placed. I asked to be refunded and not wait further as we had a baby with us and needed to get home . She refunded the bagel but on checking my receipt it was for a lesser amount, when I questioned this and said to waitress perhaps it was just a ‘bad day’ she said No ‘ that’s what happens after a 19 hour shift. I won’t return as this isn’t an answer I wanted to hear . Whoever owns this shop you have a good product but customer service isn’t a top priority.

I recently completed a sourdough baking class with Roman and his team. The whole day was well prepared and thought out. He provided a fantastic insight into the art of bread making and his passion and knowledge came across in buckets. I had an excellent time, learnt lots and have now started making my own bread at home, all thanks to Roman. He is willing to offer his experience and time which I greatly appreciated. Excellent teacher, excellent bread and excellent coffee too! We are fortunate to have someone of his expertise in this town!

I’ve been buying my sourdough bread from Flour and Spoon since it opened and it’s the best. The staff are all so lovely and helpful. Plus it’s doggy friendly! Also the vegan sausage rolls are incredible

What can I say, this is the most brilliant place to arrive in Leigh. Everything is so tasty and the bread is out of this world. Once you have eaten anything they make you will go back again and again.

Sorry guys but the breakfast we had today was very poor. My wife’s avocado was served even though it was badly bruised/black. My scrambled eggs were inedible as they resembled a hard sponge. Even though we were the only ones in there it took an age for our meals to arrive & when they did the portion size was disappointing (served on a side plate). Both coffees were left as for some reason they were so sweet in taste. Unfortunately nobody came over to see if everything was ok, so we left disappointed.

A friend and I stopped in for a coffee and absolutely loved it. The decor is relaxed and friendly. The staff were all amazing and so helpful. The coffee was the best I've had in Leigh! The homemade cakes all look amazing, however, it was too close to dinner time to partake but definitely will very soon! Thank you for a pleasant experience and I will see you again very soon!!

Not only do they produce wonderful sourdough bread, but this is the best place in Leigh for a really satisfying coffee and homemade cakes.

Well worth a visit had a delightful and delish sausage roll and an excellent cup of tea here with my old friend and food was hot and smelt delish and and so fresh and tasty and not bad tea either well worth a few more visits

Attended a Sourdough lesson on a Sunday afternoon. Excellent experience from the very passionate Roman. Learned to bake loaves and bagels the authentic way. We left with the best bread I have ever tasted along with a bag of Carr's flour and a proving basket. Dinner was provided also, a lovely selection of sourdough pizza! I can highly recommend the lesson for any food enthusiast!

If you stop in here be sure you will try the most homemade products possible. No shortcuts, just organic ingredients with amazing outcome. P.s avocado bagel is the winner

OMG just had the best sausage roll ever at the Flour and Spoon, straight out of the oven. Pastry cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. Myself and a friend also had an amazing cappuccino, a truly wonderful tasting coffee and her daughter had a luxurious white hot chocolate which was also delicious. Service was excellent too!!

Went here for coffee today as it looked ,lovely and quiet. We had a latte coffee, we said it is the best tasting coffee out of all the coffee shops in leigh! It is lovely and peaceful in there. If children are inside it would be very noisy. Lovely friendly owner. Did not try any food but will soon. Very clean inside and I hope it stays a peaceful cafe for a bit of peace and quiet.

I've been waiting to visit Flour and Spoon since they opened in mid December but as I don't live in the area this is the first opportunity I have had. It has thoroughly been worth the wait, this place is amazing. The sourdough is possibly the best bread in the world...to coin a phrase, I kid you not. Its the real mccoy, not the fake stuff you get in supermarkets. Its made with love and the basic sourdough ingredients and thats it. No horrible additives. There is no jumping on the bandwagon with these guys, its the real deal. We had lunch here which again, they just use lovely fresh ingredients. The one thing, well one of the things, to take note about Flour and Spoon is that they really care about every aspect of what they do. The decor is rustic but very clean. They refuse to use plastic. The milk is in glass. They put love into everything they do and its clear to see. The staff are attentive and really seem to have a pride in what they do. I wish I lived in leigh as I'd be in there a few times a day without doubt. Tip - get there early or around 2pm for their sausage rolls. They smell and look amazing. I bought a few for the husband and will be sniffing his fingers when he eats them :-)

I placed a order for sourdough and croissants for the 24th December. Arrived on time and this bread is 5* the best bread I have had in years it is delicious croissants excellent too please if you want first class bread and excellent service support these guys this is my go to bakery Thank you guys

Popped in here for a coffee & mince pie the weekend after it opened, very nice décor, friendly & professional staff, even though they had only been opened a couple of days, will definitely be going back maybe for lunch next time, well done to the team at Flour & Spoon for opening at such a busy time of year. Good luck for 2019.

This email little bakery opened just recently , but will surprise you with their amazing selection of their sourdough - proper sourdough - made of Flour, water and salt only ... their cakes are devine, great ones for vegan and gluten intolerance customers, but their best of The best is their caramelized apple & fennel sausage rolls!!! But they selling fast so you have to be there earlier to get one! Nice coffe and tea, delicious chocolate. They will also offer sourdough baking classes from next year. My new destination to get real artisan healthy bread!
