Best fish and chips I've tasted in an age. So fresh and tasty. Travelled on a whim for a fish and chip lunch for an hour and a half having read a review and this did not disappoint !

Visited this small cafe last week, I must say the food was made fresh to order and the service was just fantastic! They had a lot of vegan options, will definitely be coming back Thank you very much BellaJohns

There aren’t enough words to describe how incredible this place is. Hands down the best fish and chips in the UK, portions are massive, the service from Mia was amazing and the chefs put a lot of effort into making the food taste incredible and have you feel at home. I was amazed by the fact that the fish is cooked in completely separate oil and no beer was used in the batter, making it completely halal and Muslim friendly. You won’t regret coming here, the only regret you’ll have will be how stuffed you feel after having one of their mammoth sized fishes.

Great place for an excellent meal and friendly service. We ordered fish and chips, the fish was fresh, with crispy batter, chunky chips, lovely lady serving with a smile.

The lady who seated us and took our order was incredibly friendly, she was joking with us and was generally pleasant to talk to. Each dish is cooked to order so everything is crisp, golden and tasted fantastic. I also spoke to another gentleman working there who was also a super nice guy.

One of theee best jacket potatoes I have every tried! Simply AMAZING! greeted by a lovely young lady who was polite and professional. Partner had scampi and chips and said the scampi was tasty. Daughter had a burger and cleared her plate which is unusual… So glad we have found a lovely little spot to return too everytime we come to Southend. Thank you!!!

This is the first time I've been here. I met up with friends from London. I'm local here. We fined "in". I say "in" because it was very difficult to accommodate two wheelchair users inside so we sat outside but still enjoyed ourselves. Lovely young lady took our order. I kept changing my mind (I've got food allergies and intolerances). Nothing fazed her. We all agreed she was exceptionally nice. And we really enjoyed the food. Because of issues I have with food I had chips, but what chips! They were melt in the mouth. Not your ordinary chips from a chippy. Scrumptious. One person had fish and chips and said it was delicious. The other person had a huge jacket potato with cheese. My latte was delicious too. I'll definitely go back and get some more chips! They have stickers on the door that they are Halal so this place is a good eatery for my Muslim friends. They are food allergy aware too. It's across from the pier so if your time is short come here because service is quick! Sorry I haven't got more photos but my companions had started eating when I decided to take photos of the food!

Such a lovely friendly atmosphere with seating indoors and (2 tables) outside. Personally I'm not a fish and chip person but the jacket potatoes were really tasty and the tea stays hot for a long time! Reasonable price and filled us up. What more can I want? Yes, highly reccomend!

I had few hours free so decided to leave London and grab some fish and chips. Amazing grilled skate and chippies. Even had to ask for takeaway box cuz I couldn’t finish the whole portion. Service and hospitality at its finest the owner John and the lovely girl were very polite, definitely this is the spot when visiting Southend.

Visited Southend after a decade and so decided on coming here to try the authentic cod and chips in the perfect location. Came before afternoon time and on a Thursday so was nice and quiet and was greeted by John who showed me the menu and his recommendations. I ordered their classic medium cod and chips. Cod was nice and fluffy with a nice light batter with I'd say the perfect size chips that aren't too big and have a nice amount of fluff inside plus cooked till golden and crispy. Salad is also placed on the side. Cannot fault the food and service and thank John for his service and hospitality. Hope to come again.

The young girl was very nice and pleasant. We couldn’t say anything about the customer service as it was great. Shame about the food. It wasn’t very good at all. Battered fish had this dry slimy piece underneath, chips are not traditional but frozen thick cut you can buy at any supermarket. All the sauces were cheap branded and tasted gone off. For £45 we wish we waited till be popping into town for something better. Unfortunately we definitely won’t visit again. Sorry 😢

We booked for 15 people on Saturday 28th October the same night as the Halloween Parade. The whole process was superb from the booking to when we left. It was obviously very very busy with take aways and people were waiting for the parade to come passed but the service from the owner and his staff was amazing. The lovely young girl that took our order was so good she didn’t stop smiling and she got the whole order right. The fish and chips was beautiful as were the other dishes can’t recommend this cafe enough thank you so much to all of you. We will be back.

We bought down 25+ elderly people for a free trip from St. Albans. Bella John's were extremely helpful with the making the initial booking and when we arrived their service was exemplary from start to finish. The food was fresh and delicious Bella John's went out if their way to make sure all the visitors and our staff were looked after. Would definitely be booking them in the future for our return next year. Back here again today (25th October 2023) for another free taxi trip to southend and again, the service was excellent, and the food was fantastic. Keep it up

5 of us out for a stroll and a bite to eat. Our usual chippy was packed as we went for this one as it had a table. Spotless, not too close to other tables and good chairs and cushions as well, which we use as my mum is tiny. The menu was as expected and it had my fav, the whitebait so I was happy to have that. Daughter had a jacket potato, my wife a vegetarian burger, my brother the steak and kidney pie and my mum had the saveloy. All the food came out in a good time, the chips were massive chunky chips all really well cooked. Had a good bit of whitebait, mum's sav was massive and she really couldn't finish it all. Janet potato went down well and brother liked his pie, which was a puka one. The service was really good, really attentive. Daughter had a hot chocolate which was thick and well nice. All in all, with the drinks it came to £55 for the 5 of us. And we all had lollipops afterwards

Every time I go to Southend on Sea this is one of the best place you can eat. You would find the stuff that look after you and very friendly atmosphere.

The food is incredible, the staff our lovely and the decor is so nice, definitely recommend.

It is very nice fish and chips food.

My extended family of 10 adults & 8 children (aged between 14 down to 6) had been let down by another local restaurant and turned up unannounced at approximately 5.30pm on an extremely damp late Saturday afternoon. To make matters worse my wife and I have a dietary requirement IE: Gluten intolerant. The Manager/owner couldn’t have been more accomodating in providing freshly cooked gluten free fish ‘n’ chips for the 2 of us and all the other adult and kids were provided with absolutely everything they ordered from their extensive menu. His staff were extremely friendly, especially when dealing with some hungry yet tired children.

The fish we had was really clean and amazing!Staff was really polite during the visit.I really enjoyed it but the vinegar wasn't my favourite but it wasn't a problem because I'm not the biggest fan of vinegar.Thank you to the staff!

Excellent food and service, Excellent experience as a whole. Chose Bella Johns Fish and Chip shop based on the reviews on Trip Adviser and the reviews were 100% true. Fish was fresh and batter light, chips were crispy (but not overdone) and fluffy inside, it came with a fresh salad (as per the photos). They served a good range of soft drinks, and we chose their milkshakes which were delicious, and thick and creamy. The restaurant was clean. The service was quick and all staff were really friendly. I would definitely return. I would recommend to my friends.

The best fish and chips I’ve ever had. I have never ever finished any fish and chips anywhere but this location I managed to finish the whole plate. The fish is cooked perfectly with the piping hot and the chips are fluffy inside and crispy outside. Highly recommend it to anyone, go to Southend on Sea to check out their fish and chips.

The burger and chips is fantastic and strongly recommend the curry sauce which is also great. The staff are very friendly and is directly opposite adventure island so is great to come out of it and be met with some lovely food.

I had the pleasure of trying the Cod & Chips and Chicken Fillet Burger with Chips today, and it was an absolute delight! The food was deliciously prepared, and I didn't have to wait long for my takeaway order to be ready. Overall, a fantastic experience that deserves a five-star rating!

I'm working down in Southend and thought I'd have a quick google of the best chip shop and this one was rated very highly so I thought I'd give it a whirl! It's in a prime location, right by the funfair and has a lovely cheap cafe vibe inside. I was greeted by a lovely girl who asked if I was taking away or eating in. I thought I'd eat in and to my surprise she ushered me inside and handed a menu. I thought it would be a quick order and take it to your table fast food kind of thing but it's sit down service! Very posh. I'm by the sea so of course I plumped for the traditional fish and chips. I went for a medium which was £10.75 or something and hoped that they'd give me something close to large. I think large was £13.75 so I don't want to be paying those bloody prices. It came and it was pretty medium to be fair. The chips were disappointingly not like the greasy chip shop chips you usually get but they were nice enough. It also had some useless salad on the side taking up valuable chip space. The fish was very nice and fresh. Overall it was a nice experience but probably on the pricey side and not the best fish and chips I've ever tasted. In fact, I prefer my local back in landlocked Melton Mowbray!

We decided to go to Southend over the holidays, and you know that we have to have fish and chips as a tradition on the sea side. Looking at Google reviews we came to Bella John's Fish and Chips and also was reasonably priced. Food was amazing, they kind of forgot my daughter's order but was sorted quickly and because of this misunderstanding they gave a larger fish and also some mozzarella dippers on the house. Great service and brilliant food. Definitely worth a visit if your down

Wasn't sure which restaurant to visit as there are 3 close together. A really nice polite young lady stood outside Bella John's in the cold with a menu in her hand. She invited us (myself, my wife and our grandson) in and we weren't disappointed. Excellent service, great food and very reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend!

Lovely meal after a walk to to see the lights. Great friendly staff, great portion size and cooked to perfection. Good cup of tea too.

Don't be fooled by the good reviews, the food here is beyond Terrible! It's cheap, poor quality, frozen crud thats been flash fried and put on a plate, and tastes like that. Any reputable fish and chip place uses quality ingredients and prepares food in store

I've been to a few fish and chip shops in the area but this place is by far the best. The fish is perfectly cooked with a light crispy batter and the chips taste delicious (cooked in separate oil to the fish which is good for vegetarians). The staff are very friendly, providing good service.

Went to Southend for the day and stopped at Bella johns, was not disappointed, we ordered a couple of omelettes and a Greek salad and the food was delicious. The Greek salad was amazing, I can definitely recommend this.

Had a lovely lunch here perfectly cooked. There was 6 of us one being a wheelchair user and at a busy time of day. I have to say was very impressed with how nothing was too much trouble we was all well accommodated and had plenty of space. I highly recommend worth a visit.

Great customer service and excellent quality fish. But what am I missing regarding the chips? This is NOT traditional chips you would normally find from a fish and chips shop. This tastes more like cooked from frozen large oven style chips with inside still a little undercooked. Unfortunately very disappointed. First time to southend in about 20 years - maybe they've forgotten what traditional chips is? Who knows... But without good quality chips, everything else was sour.

Just awful. Reheated frozen chips, 90% batter around the fish. Had to drown it with vinegar to make it edible. How this place has 4 stars is unreal!!
