Salt & Vinegar Fish Bar in Stroud

15th March 2025 just after midday. Just two elderly people who for once decided to have a fish and chip dinner takeaway on our way back home from Gloucestershire. My wife purchased them by card and would not tell me how much they cost us until we were back home. Although hinted that we, for an extra fiver each could have had a sit down two course restaurant meal. But that was not the problem. To be fair when the boxes were opened there was a half lemon plus a savoury dip. And—although there was a ton of chips, ( almost enough for two maybe three servings in each box) the majority of them were hard and sharp with many black marks on the actual chips. Also rather dry. The fish was plentiful and well battered but was very dry also and not absolutely certain if it was ‘cod’ or not!! Really not sure if the chips had been cooked before but had to leave most of mine as did my wife. A shame really as this was our first fish and chip dinner for ages. Just to mention we are not trouble causing people but would definitely have expected better considering the price. Although the price was not the problem. But the chips did not get wasted as the resident seagulls were not bothered whether they were hard or not!! So, do not think we will be risking a fish and chip takeaway again. Sorry but feel that this needs to be addressed as neither of us was very happy and just could not be bothered to drive all the way back to the fish and chip shop or contact by phone to point this out! For the price paid we would have expected something that we could have actually eaten and enjoyed! Regards — Jonathan W.

Having just spent alot of money in this fish bar mostly on fish and chips we expected the meal to be of the usual high standard . Unfortunately , this wasn't the case. In fact, I think it was nearly the worst fish and chips I've ever had! Really disappointing and we won't be going there again.

Brilliant Fish. Chicken burgers.ect Chips not so good suspect heated up not crisp. Hence the 4 stars .

To be honest a poor average, chips were hard and sharp! Tasted like warmed up yesterday's! Couldn't eat them, fish cake nothing special! All in all very disappointing....never again

Very disappointed in my Fish and Chips. This is the second time I have tried this Fish and Chip shop. The first time the Fish was really great that it made me ill. Thr second time the Fish was all dried out and not fresh at all and the chips were cold. I won’t be returning again.

I once bought a saveloy from here, it had a weird texture and if I had to guess I would have said that it had been microwaved instead of cooked as the colour was off. I bought chips from here which were always OK, never great but they were handy and local so it was something we did maybe once every couple of months. We decided not to cook tonight so I bought a Chicken Burger for my son which was OK, it was a prebought breaded chicken which had been deep fried so was hard to get wrong. I went for a pie because you cannot mess up a pie. I was wrong, I will share the video I took of the pie because I don't think you would believe me if I tried to explain how bad the base was. This pie was OLD. It had clearly been heated and cooled several times. Unfortunately I assumed the top was overcooked so broke through it and ate some of the middle before finding the base so I don't know how ill this will make me because this should not have been sold to a human. I can't be bothered to go and get my money back but I certainly won't go back to this chip shop and I hope, when you see this review and watch the video, you will vote with your wallets too and choose somewhere else.

Chips I got to take away were amazing and I love the bag rather than the paper wrapping!

Worse chips ever they was all little bits and hard not many chips was actually edible even the dog turned his nose up all tho the fish is nice .they need to sort out how to cook and prepare chips

Would give 0 star if I could. Ordered haddock and chips and pie and chips and curry sauce. Got home opened to the soggiest, tasteless piece of fish ever. Curry sauce was as thin as water. Chips were cooked hours ago and shoulda been thrown away. I threw everything but the pie away. Absolutely awful chip shop.

They tried to give us fish defrosted in HOT water. Here's what food safety has to say about defrosting fish in hot water: "Make sure never to defrost fish at room temperature or in warm or hot water as this is when bacteria can multiply rapidly". You're going to give people food poisoning if you continue doing this! Not at all impressed. Chips are drier than ghandi's flip flops as well.

After a 5 hour drive to Dursley we me and my mate decided it would be nice to get a decent meal before we make the long journey home. How wrong was we Fish and chips was absolutely disgusting When we went in there was 2 other customers waiting. We ordered are food and then the staff or owner put fresh fish and chips in the fryer. However after putting it in the fryer he then started are Oder with the fish and chips he already had waiting leaving the 2 customers before us to wait for the fresh fish and chips. I was annoyed but didn’t won’t to say anything We got in the car opend it and didn’t even smell or look fresh. Chips was very dry and cold the fish batter was soggy and cold and the end was dry and hard. Total easy of money and we but it in the bin. Even the 2 ladies that was there before us was standing there with a smile knowing we was being served the crap lol. On the upside there was tartar sauce or mayo in a tup that we didn’t ask for however and I’m totally 100% being honest as you guys going think everything can’t be that bad. Well there was a hair stuck to the lid part when we opened it. Definitely not recommended or if you go ask for fresh as his going give you the crap to eat.

Owner seemed to want to take control of everything leaving his staff standing idle and confused..

Forgot the top part of the roll on a cheese burger..offering free pies and fish on the next visit.. but good food

This was a birthday celebration price was £39 you could see the chips and fish had been re warmed from lunch time fish over cooked and chips wrinkled the cost of fish and chips are expensive so it was ment to be a treat most went in the bin we were very good customers when they opened last year will not return

It's 21:00 hrs popped in to cam chip shop for something for tea. Bought large cod and chips. £11.00. When I got home the fish was dry and the batter was hard, probably been sat there since lunch time. Never again.

Fish and chips that were clearly fried a long time ago or have been re-fried....so dry!!

I've never been here before but after arriving too late at The Salmon Pub (8.35) I was starving and found this place via Google. Without doubt the best Fish and Chips I've had in years with a huge portion of curry sauce too. Good value at £11 the fish was cooked fresh and was piping hot too. If you're in the area I'd thoroughly recommend it...absolutely fabulous 👌

Waiting for family to return home. Feeling hungry & not prepared to cook for myself I decided to have F&C. I could not have asked for more. A generous portion of fish & chips, piping hot, served in a box, with lemon +tartar sauce. It was delicious.

£3.40 for a medium chips? >20% price hike = buy elsewhere.

Never using this chip shop again as they are happy to let customers walk in with dogs

Best fish and chip shop I’ve ever been to. Amazing portions for the price. 1 large chips will easy do two people. Great service for a busy Friday night. Would give 10 star if I could.

I had a 3 month road trip from East Sussex up to Loch Ness and back. Lots of different stopovers and several visits to the local Chippy. I have to say that your Haddock and chips are Way out in front. Beautiful food. Thanks very much. Regards Mal

Tried for the first time last night and have to say the fish and chips were amazing. Fish cooked whilst I was there so crisp and fresh and served with tartare sauce pot and lemon slice. Highly recommended

Best cod and chips I’ve had in a very long time

Very good local chippie 😀 although like most, I never understand why fish can be crushed inside a box with chips.

Have had a couple of cod and chips from here, which were consistently good in terms of portion size and quality of fish. My only gripe was that the tartare sauce was very bland on both occasions and was a bit of a disappointment. Otherwise, all excellent and a great addition to the area.

Thank you staff for your friendly service. Food was excellent. We will definitely be back for more.

Tried for the first time on Friday evening, it was very, very busy, but handled with professionalism and a smile. Really lovely food, and I'm super fussy when it comes to chips, hate any eyes or bruising. The fish and chips were lovely. The tartare sauce and lemon wedge with the fish was a really nice finishing touch. Really liked the curry sauce which had a little bit of heat to it. Reasonable prices too, we will definitely be back!

You won't be disappointed if you get your fish and chips from here. The fish is beautifully cooked and very tasty. No stingy portions here. A right chunk of cod. The chips are a decent portion and crisp. Not all soggy like a lot of places. The fish comes in a box with a tartar sause pot and a wedge of lemon. Just how I like my fish. That's a great special touch. The staff are also friendly and always great you cheerfully. I return most Friday evening with my partner after the gym.

Great haddock and chips, worth waiting the extra few minutes for it to be cooked

One of the best Fish & Chip shops I’ve been to. It’s the only place I’ve been given tartare sauce & a slice of lemon with my fish. The food was hot & tasty. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Excellent food, and the service was great and a variety of things on the menu, I chose the haddock, and I had to wait a few minutes for it to cook. It was worth the wait. It came with a slice of lemon and a pot of tartare sauce, too, amazing.

We love this new takeaway; it’s quite simply the best fish and chips in the area, impeccably clean and lovely staff. Well presented, fresh and tasty fish and chips with a pot of (tastes homemade) tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. Have been half a dozen times or so already and consistently excellent. You won’t regret it.

Ordered from here on Friday night: cod, chips, sausage and curry sauce. Came to just over £10. All the food was fab, but the fish really stood out - incredibly tasty and fresh. Chips were amazing too because they put them in a bag and then SHOOK THE SALT AND VINEGAR UP WITH THE CHIPS IN THE BAG. Mind blown! Didn’t go in myself but boyfriend said “the chap in there was very nice”.

I love the batter as its nice and thin and not thick. The chips are a little dry for me but thats only my opinion. I like mine soft and soggy....

Second experience & maybe 8.45 was a bit late on the chip front. Pie was lovely, husband had fish which was lovely but batter was soggy & chips were tired & dry, very disappointed ☹️.

Genuinely think this is the best battered haddock I've ever had. Fluffy, crispy, tasty, and cooked to perfection. Staff are friendly. Place is super clean and welcoming. We will return!

Used this for the first time last week. Good experience staff very friendly and helpfull food good and I liked the system they have for giving you a number with your order so you can stand out the way and wait. Keep it up guy's your do well..

First visit to day Monday. First class fish and chips and to make it a bit special you get a slice of lemon and tartar sauce.A really treat will be back soon.

This is a newly opened chippy, and everyone in the area seemed to be visiting this Friday evening. As a consequence, the staff team was rushed off their feet. That meant everything felt equally rushed and a bit hectic. The regular chips are very big and the large are mammoth. The cod was well cooked and flaky with a crisp batter. Waiting time was around ten minutes, but there was some confusion around some orders, which meant that a few people waited around 25 minutes.

Lovely food and great staff :) 10/10.
