This is a gem of a place. Access is by stairs which I managed to climb (I do have mobility issues). The staff are polite and attentive. I had the Welsh Rarebit which came with a salad and apple chutney. Hubby had the. vegetarian breakfast, which thoroughly enjoyed. We share a cafetière of very nice coffee and asked for hot milk. The whole experience was a delight. We will detinately be back.

Having visited this place about 15 time before, I would have expected a meal of the same standard. Highly disappointed. the toasty was served with no salad, no choice of bread, just a pile of CRISPS poured onto the side of the plate. soggy white bread, little filling and no offering of any sauces etc. Avoid.

The Salt & Pepper coffee shop is very nice and the quality of the breakfast items was excellent, however, when you order a Full English you expect beans to be a standard part of it. At £11 I do not expect to be charged another £1 for a small pot of beans, on principle I did not have them. Further down the High St there is another coffee shop that is a little cheaper and you get everything you expect so not sure why they do this. Overall it is a great little coffee shop though

Visited Monmouth during a recent stay in the Forest of Dean and having seen food reviews of this place on Trip Advisor, was keen to visit myself. If did not disappoint ! We sat outside on the street, people watching one of my favourite past times. I had the house special, the Rueben whilst my wife had a jacket potato. Both absolutely excellent !!! The coleslaw with the Reuben was phenomenal it has to be said and arguably the creamiest coleslaw I’ve had. My only complaint, there was not enough of it LOL. Food, service and drinks where are excellent and ££ on the price scale making for great value for money. Highly recommended 9/10. Missed out on the perfect 10 as I wanted more coleslaw !

We ordered lunch. When the poached eggs on toast arrived one was hard boiled. When we asked for another the response was “ oh did you want them runny?” However no problem in replacing but how can the chef think it’s okay to send out 1 hard poached egg and one soft?!! One piece of bacon £3. The Reuben sandwich was inedible. So disappointing as this is a favourite place of ours but not any more

Looking for a bite to eat in Monmouth we tripped over Salt and Pepper, it's on the first floor of a shop and spills out onto the street and into the courtyard as well as indoor rooms, so choices regardless of the weather. A couple of errors in our order but the staff were motivated to put these right immediately with great courteousness. I had beef chilli nachos which were just spicy enough, others had sandwiches. The food was great but the enthusiasm and warmth of the staff is what will send me back. Well done team.

This was a lovely place for lunch with stunningly good service from a young team. From the moment we arrived, we could not fault the polite and helpful staff; one young man spotted us looking hesitant with our bikes and took us down a side path to park and lock them and this made us feel welcome from the start. The food was perfect for us; we had the goats' cheese tart and black pudding salad which were light and fresh - very welcome on a hot day. We were so glad that we hadn't simply found a pub where we had to cope with a huge lunch but the large burgers sailing past showed that we could, if we had wished, enjoyed a much heartier meal.Admittedly the first guy waiting on tables didn't know if the cider was dry or sweet but this didn't detract from our wonderful impression of the place. Coffee and a shared cake were also excellent and we fully intend to visit Monmouth again, simply on the strength of our impressions gained from the café (we sadly had little time for anything but lunch).

Service was a bit hit and miss though as the servers were either lightening fast and dashed away before we could ask for condiments or left us 15 minutes waiting to exchange a chocolate milkshake due to it not being very chocooately. Overall good experience and lovely spot to have lunch and people watch.

We visited Monmouth whilst on a long weekend visit to the area and came across Salt and Pepper purely by chance. It was a busy Friday lunchtime but we timed our arrival perfectly as a table became free. We sat down and a young man appeared immediately apologising that he hadn’t wiped the table down. We told him not to worry as we hadn’t given him a chance to do that. He then asked if our dog would like a drink and a biscuit, which was so thoughtful and we accepted his kind offer. The menu was perfect for a lunchtime (‘as well as very reasonably priced) and we ordered a salmon and cream cheese sandwich and mozzarella and tomato toastie. Both were fresh and hot when they arrived and we enjoyed them immensely. What we really noticed, however, was just how friendly, efficient and professional the young team of waiters and waitresses were. They should be very proud of themselves because, along with the lovely food, they made the whole experience very enjoyable indeed! Well done!

I would have given more stars if it werent for the poor customer service we received about our food.Very friendly staff in the shop and we were served by a very friendly waitress.Food:The goat cheese tart was great. Big chunk of goat cheese. Would definitely recommend.Burger was fully loaded with fresh beef tomato, salad and gherkin. One criticism I have for this place is that before we ordered, we asked if there were anything that was sold out. The waiter said no, not that he is aware of.When the food came, the burgers came with normal fries which were slightly undercooked instead of sweet potato fries which was advertised on the menu. Wanting sweet potato fries was part of the reason why the food was chosen. When questioned, the waiter said "well it's just fries, we don't have sweet potato fries". No apology given. When we paid for the food, we spoke to 2 other waitresses and explained they should have told us they were no longer serving sweet potato fries as it was what's advertised on their menu. Their response was "yeah it's just fries, we have been very busy so forgot to tell you". Again no apology. I feel more staff training is required for customer service as I believe it is within my consumer's right to receive what was advertised on your menu unless stated otherwise. It ruined the mood.

5 stars for the cafe, 1 star for the clothes shop. This is about a lady who was working at the clothes shop at salt and pepper yesterday on Friday the 20th of November around 1:30pm.Me and my sister Vicky had a lovely wonder in the shops around town in Monmouth and we had a fantastic lunch at salt and pepper cafe.Me and my sister had a wonderful day and we dont do this very often due to being busy so it was a great day out for us.Me and my sister walked into the salt and pepper clothes shop and we was both amazed by all the beautiful products. The lady who worked there shouted very loudly 'I will leave you girls to browse' but in a quite harsh tone and assuming that we wasnt going to buy anything. The lady who worked there kept her eyes on me the whole time and was stood very close to me and staring at me as I was browsing. She scared me and nearly put me into a panic attack. My sister was on the other side of the room and was looking at trainers and the lady who worked there shouted 'put it back, go and look at the ones at the back' and the whole shop could hear her.My sister hurried herself to me and said come let's get out of here and I said yes let's go in an instant.I have never been made to feel so little in all my life and I'm sure I can speak the same for my sister. What a great shame she brings to the lovely store.

We occasionally find ourselves in Monmouth at lunch time and invariably choose Salt and Pepper to eat because it does not serve junk food and caters for those seeking fresh healthy options. It's clean and the staff are friendly and attentive to special diets. The choices are limited but well prepared and presented and we prefer it to other eating places in Monmouth for lunch. I wish there was another category for “good” as this place is better than “average” but not as good as other places we have scored “very good “.

Staying in Monmouth for a wedding we visited this cafe above a kitchen shop twice. Superb. The breakfast was outstanding-really high quality local ingredients cooked to perfection. The cheese scones were impressive too. Well worth a visit. Highly recommended

Recommended to us by family we were visiting in Monmouth. Good menu choices, lovely food, and a good atmosphere. Efficient service, food was well presented and most importantly tasted good. Will visit again next time im in the area.

A suuny afternoon spent walking around Monmouth. On the main street we found the cafe above a homewares store. There is a small terrace on which we had a cream tea - really nice. The food and drinks both good, service good and toilets in the next door restaurant. A good place for a stop in lovely Monmouth.

We found this coffee shop by accident and we were so glad we did! It’s above a little shop by the same name and the staff showed us the way up. The coffee was great, cakes and scones were delicious. We sat out on a little terrace in the sunshine which made it extra nice!

I have only ever been to this restaurant for breakfast and have to say it was great ! The staff couldn't have been more helpful as my friends didn't want a regular breakfast and picked out the items and quantities they liked. This was duly cooked freshly and served up while hot. Highly recommended

I love this coffee shop which is tucked away where you don't expect it. There are several areas to choose from even a small outside balcony area. A great choice of paninis with different fillings and the jacket potatoes are really delicious.

Just had fish bites and chips. Absolutely stunning!! The inside of the chips were fluffy and soft and the fish tasted so good. Will definitely call in again

We shared 6 Vegetable dishes for lunch today, plus a pud, and every mouthful was sensational. The dishes were complex and delicious, and very satisfying. It is difficult to find good vegetarian food that I can’t cook equally well at home. These dishes really were better than anything I’ve cooked, and there was plenty of choice. Plenty of choice for carnivores too. The chefs really know how to squeeze the maximum flavour out of every ingredient. The celeriac dish was my favourite , but we couldn’t decide which was our second favourite plate of deliciousness. We’ll be back.

Took my sales team here for lunch, 10 of us in total. The food is incredible and you certainly won’t go hungry. Everyone at the pub is friendly and can’t do enough for you. Feels like a good old fashioned boozer set in an amazing position on the Wye. Everyone only had good things to say about the place. Steak is a specialty here. No hesitation in recommending the Rose and Crown. Thanks all who looked after us that day.

9 of us for dinner. Just as well we had booked as the place was rammed! No surprises why! We had a fantastic meal. I think we had the best waitress I've ever experienced and the landlord and his wife/partner put in a good shift as well and obviously the chefs. What amazed me most was I could see into the kitchen and there only appeared to be 2 people in there and I didn't hear a raised word all the time I was there! Anyway top marks Hall Inn, we all loved the experience. My wife and I live in York and we will be definately coming back when we next visit.

Lovely Irish landlady was extremely accommodating to me & my two boys.. Service was how service used to be before the big pub chains took over everything… Food was brilliant.. Had to have the bread pudding as haven’t had it since I was a kid.. took me right back! Definitely recommend and will return 👌🏼
