On the way up to Scotland we were looking for somewhere for a snack near Carlisle. The reviews for Sally’s looked good, so we gave it a try. The reviews were true to every word. Fabulous food and excellent service. The scones were ‘to die for’ … needless to say we also stopped there on the way home. Don’t take my word for it…..

This was a ‘lucky find’ when travelling between Newcastle and the Lake District. I had the cheese scone special - delicious homemade cheese scone which was toasted and served with a couple of slices of bacon and chutney. Whoever thought of this combination was a genius!! The service was cheerful and friendly. I’m sure we’ll be stopping off here again!

Found this little gem by chance as I had arranged to meet a work colleague for a quick catch up on the A69. when I arrived the place was mobbed with happy chatty customers, But the staff quickly cleared me a table and helped me select a lovely home made spicy tomato soup, I also had one of their own sausage rolls that they warmed up for me, My workmate joined me and had a lovely traybake and piping hot earl grey tea. The service was fast and the staff were really friendly and chatty. Prices were very reasonable, The choice of bakery products is extensive. I will be back. 👍

What a treasure. I was looking for an alternative to motorway services and discovered Sally’s Cafe. Lovely staff, dog friendly, and lovely, simple food. Just what was needed. Great service with a little treat for our dog too. So much better than manic service station, although this is a popular little place and can get busy. We were so impressed we routed ourselves back here on our homeward journey a week later. Was every bit as good as the first visit. Will definitely be back soon.

Really nice cafe in a good spot along the A69. Friendly staff, great food and it's a nice place to sit and relax away from the hairiness of the major trunk road outside. Pro tip: it gets busy at lunchtimes as it also functions as a takeaway sandwich shop so all the staff can be flat out doing that which means that table service can be slightly compromised until it quietens down a little bit. Pro tip 2: no fried products, in my case an egg to go with the sausage and bacon sandwich. I've come across this before in some other places, but don't know the reason for it. I guess there are some regulations behind it. It's not a bother at all - just something to be aware of...

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I visited here mid-week. I have been before. There is dedicated parking, but not much and it gets full very quickly. I'm not sure where else you could park if it's full, but it is in the middle of the village so one of the surrounding streets would be fine, I imagine. You can eat in, but I've done this before and the tables are very crammed together and claustrophobic and the tables themselves aren't really big enough to get everything on comfortably so I don't eat in there, preferring to take out. Also, the take out queue is very long in busy parts of the day and this again makes the place feel too loud and cramped to eat in. This isn't their fault unless they moved to bigger premises so just my personal preference. The scones here are delicious and I always get at least a couple when I go. Absolutely no complaints about those. Fabulous. I also bought a couple of bits of sponge cake (one chocolate, one coffee) as they looked lovely and I've never tried those before from here. Flavour wise, these were both very nice. But they were so stale! I went in the morning and there was so much already gone of each cake I imagine they were from the previous day. These were a disappointment to me but it wouldn't stop me buying cake again from there as I would just make sure I ordered a slice of a new, uncut cake. I tried a piece of their mars bar cake, which was also stale and the crispies had started to go soft and stale at the edges. Again, the taste was nice so if I got a fresh piece next time, I'd happily order it again. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if I asked them "which cakes are fresh today please?" and I would choose from that selection. There is a toilet just over the café area. It's small, but does the job. However, when I used it on this visit the smell was AWFUL. It could be that a customer had been in just before me for a 'number 2'. But it smelled more of drains or eggs or something to me and was really strong. Not nice. What I don't like about here though is the service. The staff are SO rude. Especially an older, larger woman who I THINK is the owner. I apologise if she isn't. There just doesn't seem to be any customer service here at all and they, and that woman in particular, is incredibly abrupt and short with people. I understand not everyone is a people person. And I know first hand how irritating customers can be. But if this isn't your forte, work in a different environment. Or work in the back kitchen instead. It's a tough one to review because the food itself is lovely but the staff are the complete opposite. The food is so good that it doesn't stop me going back. But there are occasions where I genuinely am on the verge of calling them out on the way they speak to me and to other customers. If it was on food alone, top marks. Service alone, bottom marks. So I've gone for a low 4* as 3* is just a bit too low for such amazing scones!

I asked what cakes they have and she said loads and then took in a huge breath and started to reel them out haha. I stopped her after about half a dozen I was impressed with her memory and the amount of cakes on offer. I chose Lemon Drizzle cake which was very moist, soft and full of lemon flavour and quite a generous portion, lots of places give you small slices, I had a nice china cup and side plate then I had a blue teapot and mint green milk jug I don’t know what happened there lol. A received an afternoon tea voucher of my old work colleagues and wow what a gift they gave. The afternoon tea was amazing, everything was homemade and fresh. The scones were fantastic! Sandwiches amazing. Cakes to die for. There was so much food we had to take some away, there was no way we were finishing it there! The staff were all lovely and you could see how popular it was as the room was filled! I would recommend highly, i will be for sure going back and will attempt to finish it all! Definitely a fabulous gift for someone! 10/10 !

I called in at Sally’s cafe on Saturday 22nd December at about 10am. I have used the cafe before and had a great experience . However this time I am sorry to say was very disappointing . I asked for two poached eggs on toast, Which was declined I then asked for scrambled eggs on toast which was also declined. I was then for some reason unknown informed that there is a hairdressers upstairs . I’m totally confused as to the relevance of the hairdressers as I am follically challenged. I was then told that I could have a sausage or bacon sandwich which I declined . ( if cooking smells were the issue in question regarding the hairdresser being upstairs bacon and sausage cause more odour than a poached egg) I was then informed that I could have a full English at the cafe on the Carlisle road!!!!!!!! I don’t eat bacon , sausage or full English breakfasts and never mentioned them myself. In summary I was made to feel extremely unwelcome by the two staff on duty at that and decided to leave . Yours in disappointment
