The good thing about this place is that they have several vegan options. The vegan sausage was quite nice. Last time I visited this restaurant, the chips were good but the portions were mean. (August 2023). This time the portion was a good size but the chips were horrible. The worst, stick-in-your-throat just like oven chips. I won't buy from there again.

These have to be the worst chips I’ve ever had, they were over cooked, hard and tasteless. I will never go to this chip shop again. Over priced, long queue and long wait for order.

Fish ok, didn’t taste fresh but the most annoying thing was they forgot our chips! Drove back to our airbnb before we realised. We went back and we were met with no apologies. Quite rude 😡 if the food was good it would have been forgiven but very average. What a shame xx

We ate at the pizza place and fish and chip shop several times while in Salcombe this week. Pizzas amazing! Delicious. Fish and chips delicious. Gorgeous fish and battered sausage. Our only feedback is that the chips aren't like usual chippy chips, but were delicious anyway. The owner (Helen?) had previously been super helpful regarding an allergen enquiry. We'll definitely be returning next year for more of the same. Delicious food and wonderful service.

Excellent. Ordered medium haddock and chips - a very large portion of fish and quality chips. Friendly staff too. Also didn't realise you can pre book and/or ring and collect. Great service all round thank you.

AWFUL chips. They tasted disgusting. There was no taste to them at all. They were worst than the cheapest supermarket oven chips.

Despite many bad reviews, our experience is actually alright. Very busy place (we went on a Friday evening) and had to wait over 15 minutes to collect fish and chips. Pizza place told us 30 minutes waiting time so we gave up. Fish was fine. Staff at fish and chips were friendly but not the one at the pizza place……

The only good part was throwing in the bin what a waste of £14.00. The fish batter was wet and greasy (under cooked) could not eat. The chips tasted like oven chips. Should have gone local supermarket and got better quality fish and chips dinner. Would have expected better. Next time will read the reviews

Well Over priced, £17 for cod and chips! You can have this in the pub and sit in for the same price. We ordered a Portion of chips instead and these were the cheapest frozen chips. Terrible, avoid.

What can I say,? Luckily we only had the over priced medium chips and curry sauce, so it’s only a fiver we lost. The chips were both under and over cooked, certainly not freshly cooked, and clearly processed and absolutely the worst chippy chips I’ve ever had! The curry sauce was bang average at best.

Where do I start? Highly overpriced, fish bap had less fish than in a fishfinger + greasy salad garnish - shouldn't have bothered as it was inedible. Chips were powdery - think they were frozen oven chips. No cutlery/chip fork given for fish, chips and mushy peas - were we supposed to drink them? Ridiculous! Also the young lad at the till was not exactly customer focused, borderline rude. Don't bother eating food from here - total waste of money. Salcombe doesn't have another fish & chip shop so they have a captive audience to mug. Shocking!

Overcooked chips, fish that was not fresh, battered sausage with no batter… not really surprising considering absolutely NO member of staff has reached puberty…. very evident by the squeaky voices and freckles. Trouble is, it’s the only chippy in Salcombe.

Dried out what look to be frozen chips... taste of deep fried oven chips even. No fish left, so had to go off piste. Pie was burned to a cinder, and looks very odd Scampi was just frozen product deep fried , fish cakes were deep fried mainly potato . Expensive and absolutely inedible. DO NOT GO THERE. And someone please open a fish and chip shop with proper chip shop chips!

Horrible, overpriced fish and chips. £26.60 for two portions. The fish was very small, undercooked and very greasy. The chips were obviously frozen and were dried out. Won't be going here again. Didn't get an ice cream, but check out the prices in my photo. £3.20 for a single scoop. Ridiculous! Don't waste your money.

Scooted in at the last minute - just before they closed, so maybe it was a rush job. But the fish wasn't great - and the batter was a bit watery. Chips were good which helped, however in the fish mecca that's Devon, I expected better. For really really world class fish and chips, go to the Pigs Nose Inn instead.

2x cod and chips, peas & curry sauce...over £20. Fair enough. I bet they're really good...they're not. Really small fish. You cannot legally fish for cod that small so it's a halved or quartered fillet and served with a tiny portion of frozen chips. The kind of rubbish you'd expect in Woolacombe not Salcombe. Maximum profit for minimum effort. Keep in mind the same meal at the crab shed (the no1 restaurant in Salcombe) is only £4.50 more and is a hell of a lot better.

There is so much choice of gluten free food available, that I ended up visiting here three times during my stay. When everyone else is having pasties for lunch, it was great to be able to have gluten free pasties myself! I tried the cheese and onion pasty, and the curried vegetable pasty (which is also vegan) and both tasted amazing with great pastry. I also visited on an evening, and had the choice of multiple vegetarian burgers, in a gluten free bun. All the chips here are gluten free, and they also do gluten free fish. The ice cream shop next door also sells gluten free cones!

What a shame when such a simple resolve could have been made by the manageress. Ordered £70 of fish and chips for 6! with chicken nuggets which was all ridiculously priced for what it was! But thinking of the local economy and recent hard times, were happy to pay for what we expected to be good. Fish and chips @£10:40 each were very average, but chicken nuggets an absolute joke for £5.20 for 10 pieces no bigger than a thumb nail. And that was the largest portion! Such a rip off..Complained politely expecting to have a listening ear and perhaps some extra provided as a gesture of goodwill only to be told that they were what I ordered and “no I’m not doing anything “. Unbelievable. The manager lady has no idea of dealing with a complaint and wasn’t even willing to consider an offer or gesture of goodwill. I spent £70 which is a hell of alot of money for simple chippy fish and chips! No wonder the place was empty yet Salcombe full. Maybe overs have also realised or had the same treatment. Not recommended unless you want to support a business who has attitude and is clearly ripping holiday makers off. All so unnecessary.

We have just been in salcombe end of July. I never eat fish and chips at home, but wanted to enjoy them by the sea, we were extremely disappointed with our chips, the fish was average but the chips were definitely frozen. I was expecting home made all different shapes and sizes, from the deep fat fryer, nope, orange hard and mushy on the inside. Such a shame, I do hope they see this review and do something about them. I will be returning next year and I’d love a good fish and chips by the sea side!

We were impressed by the queuing system they had, you queue outside. One person in thr shop at a time. Wait across the road for your food to be delivered to you. The queue took 30 minutes. The food took a further 20, but it was very busy. They didnt have any plaice or paddock, only cod, so we had that. The cod was ok, nothing special, but the chips were awful. Over done and very small portions. They were like oven chips that had been deep fried. Definitely not worth the £8.50 paid. Avoid.

We are local people who visited after a long week at work. My fish had a nasty smell and tasted foul. It was inedible. I tried to ignore it thinking it was just me but after our friends then said there is something wrong with their fish. My partner and our friend returned to inquire. They calmly approached but were greeted with a defensive and hostile reply. It was suggested that we are not used to fresh fish (pretty shocking as we all enjoy fresh fish on a regular basis) and that there was nothing wrong with our food. After leaving nearly 50 pounds worth of fish on the side this should speak volumes!!!! DISGRACE and I still have the awful taste in my mouth. Sadly we will not be visiting any time soon

As a Salcombe regular over the years I’ve seen the Salcombe Original Takeaway at its highs and lows. Previous visits over the years have been fantastic usually getting cod and chips. However the couple visits in the last year, in low season last Autumn and this month the usually good chips have been replaced with oven chips. It’s a real pity as it’s made us not want to return and instead just go for the brilliant pizzas. Please bring back the quality chips!

We ordered for 7 (3 adults, 4 kids). Apart from chips we ordered cod, scampi, whitebait and plain sausages, and curry sauce. The cod was as good as it gets, melty and delicious. The whitebait was plentiful with a perfect batter - just right. Our kids said the sausages were 'good and tasty'.Curry sauce was also good - tangy, lumpy and curryish.Chips were a let-down, more like cheap oven chips than a proper chippy, they were OK but a bit cardboady. These guys still get 5 stars from us though, the fish is just awesome!Well worth the (15 mins) wait!

It seemed strange that (unlike every other chip shop we've ever seen) you can't see them preparing the chips. So ours were boxed up and bagged before we realised, when we opened them later, that they were fried oven chips! You know those very average things that they serve up in pubs? Come off it.The fish was good though.

I dont often write reviews but feel I should...it may help with customer service. I would have rated it 1 star if it was just on customer service at the icecream parlour but the chip shop saved it. My entire family and I, have lived in the area my whole life and are in Salcombe at least a couple of times a week. On numerous occasions we have had takeaway fish and chips, which have always been very tasty and the young staff were polite and happy even when they have queues going down the street. I can't fault the chip shop. However, the service at the icecream parlour was poor. I got the impression that the older lady was the owner? (I may be wrong) but whoever she is, she shouldnt work in hospitality or maybe she was just having an off day. Having queued for quite some time (this I dont mind), I was served by someone that clearly didnt want to be there. I ordered 3 icecreams and asked if I could purchase just a waffle cone for my 2yr old, as he wasnt a fan of icecream but loves the cone. Her reply "no, we dont sell just a cone". First place I have ever been where this has been a problem. Infact 9 times out of 10, other establishments give me a cone free of charge. I had already offered to pay for it, but after some huffing and puffing amd throwing her toys out the pram she finally gave in and charged me for a cone. Really??? Was it such a massive issue to sell just 1 waffle cone. Bit pathetic really. As is this review but every time we get an icecream in Salcombe, i remember that scenario and go elsewhere and guess what...no problems there!

I’ve been a regular visitor to Salcombe for a number of years, and have enjoyed fish and chips all over the south coast of Devon. This is easily the best fish and chips establishment in the area. The chips are amazing - cooked with skins on and utterly tasty. The fish is meaty and generous, with a lovely light and crunchy batter. The price is amazing value for money - we paid £25 which easily fed a family of five with food to spare! Most of the pubs will charge you that for one meal! The best part is the service though - on our two visits this week we were served by a young man who engaged with us and had a really good rapport, and we were also served by Steph who runs the establishment, and we got chatting. We had a lovely chat with her - she is Salcombe through & through and really loves what she does. This is exactly the kind of people that make your visit so memorable - excellent food, excellent service and a real local hero. We will be returning many more times!

How can you ruin chips? Well be prepared because this place can! Unbelievably disappointing chips! They were clearly frozen, not fresh-cut as expected. Even worse, the vinegar came in pots instead of being poured on properly. Definitely not worth it!

I rarely write negative reviews, but only the beer and the view lead to my 2 stars. Told I'd have to have a plastic drinking vessel if I wanted to sit outside. I'm a pensioner. Am I going to glass someone?? The barman relented after my protest. Not a friendly feel at all. Beer well kept, and reasonable pricing.

Received a mouth full from the woman behind the counter, for walking in the wrong door. No signs on the doors telling you which one to use and the doors are both next to each other. Both doors take you into the same area and there was no queue just a few people inside . I was on crutches, but she demanded I went back out the door and in the other. Another customer spoke up and said “what difference does it make and perhaps they should have signs if it mattered that much”. I couldn’t even be bothered to communicate with the women. I walked out the door and found another takeaway with excellent customer service and spent £45.. I work hard for my money and The Cod Father will not be getting any of it. Beyond rude and completely unnecessary.and just because you may be busy doesn’t mean you always will be. Customer service counts in any business.
