Received a mouth full from the woman behind the counter, for walking in the wrong door. No signs on the doors telling you which one to use and the doors are both next to each other. Both doors take you into the same area and there was no queue just a few people inside . I was on crutches, but she demanded I went back out the door and in the other. Another customer spoke up and said “what difference does it make and perhaps they should have signs if it mattered that much”. I couldn’t even be bothered to communicate with the women. I walked out the door and found another takeaway with excellent customer service and spent £45.. I work hard for my money and The Cod Father will not be getting any of it. Beyond rude and completely unnecessary.and just because you may be busy doesn’t mean you always will be. Customer service counts in any business.

As mentioned in previous reviews: worth the wait in the queue. Quality is excellent, hence it’s very busy - team are very efficient but expect a wait for a large order or if something needs to be cooked fresh.

Fantastic fish and chips, always use them when in the area

We were on holiday in the area and looked at reviews of local fish and chip shops before deciding where to go. Based on the recent reviews of The Cod Father, we nearly dismissed it. I’m so pleased we didn’t! The fish was chunky and tasty, the portions of chips were generous and the battered sausages were of good quality. Yes, it’s busy, but wouldn’t you expect that of a good take away in peak season? I think this is what previous reviews had focussed on. We queued a while to place our order, but the staff were working flat out and were super organised! The food was being continuously replenished and was therefore really hot and fresh when we got our order. The team were really friendly, despite being under a lot of pressure! Would highly recommend, but expect a bit of a wait as it’s so popular. Believe me, it’s worth it!

First meal in Kingsbridge and I chose badly. This was such an unpleasant fish and chip supper. The oil tasted stale, the batter was of poor quality, the fish was just about OK but a bit dry. My stomach is still feeling some ill effects. It was definitely not a good experience so I shall not be returning.

Great fish and chips, but very busy

The service was quick even though they were busy as usual. The food is always freshly cooked. And the size of the fish its enough for 1 adult and a child to share.

Fantastic chips and friendly staff. With it being the only fish and chip shop in Kingsbridge, queues can end up rather long, however, the food is definitely worth the wait. If you're in the area, there's no better place for great quality fish and chips.

Been using this establishment for many years , and everytime staff have been very friendly and helpful, the chef is brilliant, but like all good things nearing retirement. Well worth a visit, lunch times there's a sit in area (with larger people seats) evenings that's closed .

Food was good and served quickly after ordering. There was a queue when I arrived and a 35 minute wait to place the order but the food was good so not too fussed about the wait. Drinks are a bit pricey. Sit down restaurant was closed on day of visit.

We are on holiday in the area, we called in one evening for chips and I stood in the queue for over 5 minutes while four staff behind the counter completely ignored me, there was only one person in front of me and the service was ridiculously slow. Hence after no acknowledgement we left and went elsewhere. A couple of nights later we decided to give it a go. Again four behind the counter, the couple in front of me were being served, while the other women looked through me as though I didn't exist, so I decided to tell them what I wanted to be very rudely told we are serving this customer! Yes one of you were the other three were not! Hence when I placed my order they still were no more polite, the battered sausage was way overpriced, but got to say the chips were tasty.

We come here when on holiday, Always good food and quick service to say they are always busy.

Had a very long wait for fish and chips, but only place around.

We were excited about visiting the cod father as we were told by locals that it had recently won a national award! Unfortunately the famed takeaway didn’t live up to the hype. The portions were very small (a large chips would have been considered ‘child size’ in our local chippie), and they weren’t particularly nice. The mushy peas were overly sweet and even my dog wasn’t keen on the sausage.

The fries are tasty. Very average fish. The burger is disgusting. The service was excellent and very friendly. The locals are delighted, but I don't like it very much.

Found you by accident this lunchtime, had the pensioners' special. The best fish and chips we've eaten in ages. We'll be back as we don't live too far away!!

Lured in by the irresistible smell of fresh battered cod and chips on arrival during our short, wet and miserable stay in Devon. Lightened the mood for sure. Many compliments to the friendly staff and especially the chef who battered and prepared our food in front of us. Would recommend.

Pensioner specials in the sit down cafe and the service was friendly and prompt and the Fish n Chips and mug of hot tea was excellent. Highly recommend. The atmosphere rating was purely that the seats were a bit cold to sit on as plastic but other than that just good simple eating experience

ordered over the phone for a birthday celebration. Half the order was missing and when we called them up they said we never ordered and wouldn't refund. Ended up paying £50 for a few portions of chips. When my mum went in a couple of days later to confront them the men in the shop told her it is what it is. So they took our money, didnt give us our full order and then the men in there belittled my mum. Don't waste your time..

We preordered by telephone, when we got the order home the five fish and two sausages were missing. When we rang we were told we hadn’t ordered some of them, some were missing and we could go back and get them !!! We had been charged for all of it !!! When we said we wouldn’t be going back, the phone was put down on us. This was a family celebration you ruined for me ! We will never be return and will not be recommending.

Nothing but praise for this lovely takeaway. Yes, had to queue for about 20 minutes but then food came freshly cooked and quick. £6.90 for single piece of cod (about half price of the rip off take away in Salcombe who tried to charge £12.50). Definitely worth the small drive from Salcombe to Kingsbridge for this reasonably priced, great tasting fish and chips. Thank you.

Fish and chips were great , staff very friendly and helpful. My wife had the lunchtime special, very good value and still more than enough to eat. I went for the large fish and chips and was completely full at the end.

Been to the Codfather nearly every year on our annual holiday but this time I was disappointed! We ate in the restaurant and were served quite quickly by a lady who wasn’t really glowing with politeness even though we were being polite to her. Anyway she took our order I gave her the money which meant I was entitled to 40p change. To be honest if she hadn’t bought back the change I probably wouldn’t have noticed but when she arrived back she said in a sarcastic tone “here’s your whole 40p change” so I said oh sorry you can keep it! I found it extremely rude especially as I’d already saved them the extra outgoing cost of the card machine! When the chips came out they were not golden they weren’t cooked properly. Unfortunately we won’t be visiting again.

Lovely crispy fish and chips, cooked fresh. It's busy enough that the food turns over quickly so it's fresh. Large portions of fish are cooked to order so be prepared for a short (five minute) wait.

Eat in or takeaway, both are great. Lovely fish and chips, friendly staff too. Come to Kingsbridge a couple of times a year and this is our first stop.

Excellent service from the staff, thank you ever so much for getting us out of a tight spot. With a hungry and tired group of 15 they were able to help on the phone and then were prompt on our arrival for collection, the food was great too! Thank you so much!

We found this to be a good, classic chippy. Food was good quality, hot and reasonably priced. We shared a small cod and chips between two adults and that was enough for a small main meal. Amazingly, it seems it is the only chippy for miles around! Certainly was popular on a Friday evening around 7.30pm but not silly queues. Recommend.

We gave up on Salcombe after discovering the only fish and chip shop with eye watering prices and came here instead. We had a large order for 12, but everything was made really quickly and to order, and the food was delicious. Best chips I’ve had in a long time, and the staff were really friendly. We’ll be back!

Fantastic fish and chips. We’re always on the lookout for really good f&c and we were searching this time while on holiday near Salcombe. This was convenient on our way back to base. The shop is modest and unassuming but the queue out of the door seemed a good sign. We were so pleased. The food was great. Generous portions, lovely fresh cod and haddock, crispy batter, perfectly seasoned. Chips were really delicious. Lightly crispy then soft on the inside. We think they were fried in dripping, the proper way. Absolutely delicious, we will be back one day!

Food is good, prices are a bit steep but service is fast.

We got them open and ate them in the park. Be prepared to queue as they are delicious.

Fish was lovely! The queue was out the door, so had a fair old wait (30mins). Slightly smaller portion than expected but great quality.

A rainy Monday lunchtime and an accidental discovery as first time in Kingsbridge. A proper takeaway/ eat in chippy. The staff couldn’t have been more pleasant and helpful. My wife opted for the OAP portion of cod and chips, my pride wouldn’t let me, so it was Plaice chips and peas along with 2 mugs of tea, well cooked and piping hot, a snip at under £20. Really enjoyed it. Now where is that Indian restaurant we’d been looking for to book for tonight?

The best Fish and Chips I have ever had, I am usually not a big fan of fish but whenever I travel I always try one from a local one and this one took me by surprise. it's just gorgeous. Had it twice in 4 days ha ha

Great chips. Other reviews complain about portion size but we found them more than adequate. Was a bit of a queue outside (but there was a local event on at the time).

Yum. Proper chippy. Their cod chips and curry sauce is damn good food. The staff are really sweet too.

Looks like the prices have gone up and the portions have gone down. If you can only manage a small portion of chips make sure you buy the large. Hate to think what the kids meals are like.. well over priced for not great tasting food. 🙄

Bit of a wait but expect that as half term holiday portion size was good and not cheap but if food good don't mind paying, the staff were lovely especially as they were extremely busy.

Lovely fish and chips, but like everywhere, prices have gone up.

It's just OK. Queued which is expected, pricy not justified and small to tiny portions, which is not on. Large portion of chips (37 chips counted) for or £4.40. You get curry sauce deserved in as thimble too. Now that's what I call a joke. Never mind though, we're hungry and with no choice.

Queued for an hour and 45 minutes, not the worst fish and chips I've had but not worth that longer wait; tasted like any fish and chips you'd get from a chippy anywhere in England, I'd expect something better considering where it is. The staff were very friendly and I did feel for them, they certainly work hard. Just a bit disappointing.

The queue might be long but it doesn’t mean the food is any good. If you want to queue for an hour to get bang average fish and chips then carry on.

Best Fish and Chips in Kingsbridge

Hello, I have lived in KingsBridge for 7 months originally from Birmingham. I am loyal to my chippy in the 0121 but tonight I decided to try the Cod Father because we moved back to Bham in two days and I cannot be bothered to cook. I ordered a reg chips and tango apple and at first fuming that I paid 5.60 for what seemed like an empty bag of chips. However, once I got them home I realised I had made a huge mistake. It took me 7 months to try these chips. These are the best chips I have eaten in my 23 years on this earth and if the economy wasn’t in the state it is I’d go back and get another bag. If you disagree with this simply re-evaluate yourself and your choices. To the people at Cod Father. Thank you. Fluffy, golden, sublime.

Excellent Fish and Chips, friendly service

Wonderful fish and plenty of it. Beautifully cooked. Clearly the soaring energy bills have bypassed the previous reviewers. Of course the prices will have increased. Don’t shoot the messenger. Always friendly, and if you have to wait it is because the staff are cooking your food for you from fresh. This is fish and chips at its best.

Overpriced for the quality you receive. Curry sauce has clumps of powder through it. Ridiculous to pay £3.80 for a handful of chips that are not cooked all the way through really disappointed.

I wonder if cooking with motor oil is taught in KIngsbridge because this is the second place that seems to destroy its food with grease. I would not recommend this place.

A very good fish and chips. We sat in to eat, prior to a trip to local cinema.. Busy local fish and chips for takeaway and eat in. Would just suggest making the eat in section warmer, as the cold air comes through from the takeaway part of the shop even with the sliding door closed.

Good food - freshly cooked. Easy to order and relatively quick to deliver. very popular on Fridays and Saturdays. Good value. Well staffed.

The old boy running this place has lost his touch a little. 33 quid for two fish / chips and a side. OK price we will accept but the priorisation or customers terrible and food itself worse than terrible...

The lady that served me failed to give me 4 ketchup dips. When I called to get a refund (because I was too far from the place to collect them) the guy I spoke to asked if I wanted to pick them up next time. I asked if I could get a refund but was not given that option. As we are leaving tomorrow there is no opportunity to pick them up. By rights I should have got a refund because I paid for something I did not get.

Freshly cooked fish and chips with all sorts of trimmings, good size portion, affordable and right in the heart of Kingsbridge. Staff are very quick and helpful. Thank you!
