How can you ruin chips? Well be prepared because this place can! Unbelievably disappointing chips! They were clearly frozen, not fresh-cut as expected. Even worse, the vinegar came in pots instead of being poured on properly. Definitely not worth it!

Without doubt, the worst tasting chips I have ever eaten (by that I mean the few I sampled before they went in the bin). Chips are frozen and have come straight off the back of a Brake Brothers lorry. This is NOT a proper chippy. No self respecting fish ship would turn out this kind of tosh. Wish I’d read the reviews beforehand.

Despite the long queues outside, the food was extremely disappointing. The fish was soggy, the chips lacked flavor, and the chicken nuggets were dry. I felt particularly bad for the French family in front of us, who probably had their first (and last) experience of English fish and chips here. Avoid this place unless you enjoy overpriced, tasteless food.

Having walked 12km from Hope Cove to Salcombe we were looking forward to the prospect of enjoying fish and chips by the harbour. Unfortunately, for our £32 (!) for 2 cod and chip dinners, we were served: soggy cod, oven chips and watery mushy peas. Went to get fish and chips, then saw price....£12.50 for a single piece of cod, just cod, no chips for that. Absolutely ridiculous pricing which is stated to be set at market value! Drove to Kingsbridge (10 minutes away). They charged £6.90 for a piece of cod. How can a tiny takeaway charge such high prices? We ignored the other reviews and regretted trying it. The worst fish and chips I've ever had, whilst also being the most expensive. The chips were totally soggy and the cod was tiny and chewy for £12. They claim that it's this price is because of high market prices, but this is a totally blatant lie as, although market prices have risen slightly, the amount of cod served to us couldn't have possibly cost them more than £2 at the local market. This place is a pathetic excuse for a fish and chip shop and probably exists only by profiteering from visitors to Salcombe. Avoid at all costs.

Normally I read reviews before going anywhere near any cafe or resturant, especially in a really tourist place like Salcombe where you know they don't have to rely on repeat business. But this time we were on the way back to the car after a long walk, feeling peckish with a while to go before dinner, and so thought why not just get a bag of chips - surely they can't get that wrong. How wrong we were - as others have said, the chips are utter rubbish and appear to be the same sort that you buy in the frozen isle at the supermarket and in no way resemble or taste like fish and chip shop chips should. For me they were most reminiscent in taste of the sort of chips you used to get with school dinners 30 years ago. Please don't waste your money.

I’d you can ever find this ‘plaice’ open, let us know what the food is like. On too many occasions, we’ve planned a chippy tea, turned up well ahead of time, only to find the place closed. Such a shame that the only takeaway chippy in a fishing harbour town is so unreliable. I quite understand the concept of winding down for the season, but at least have the courtesy to give customers a heads up with more appropriate signage around likely closing times. Yes, this is a bit of personal moan, but we’ve been caught out so many times by unreliability and random decisions to simply close for the night, despite being advised earlier in the day that the place would be open.

Luckily, the 3 out of 5 reviews prevented us from ordering the fish. If the chips alone were anything to go by, then I'm glad we did. Resembling and tasting more like dry oven chips and I think, cooked from frozen, this was the smallest serving I've ever seen from a fish and chip shop. I'm shocked that such an affluent town as Salcombe, does not have a good quality fish and chip shop? What's going on here?!! Very odd indeed. How an establishment that is located on the south coast can manage to serve up stale, fish and chips that tastes like it has spent too long in the freezer is quite beyond me. It's almost pointless writing this review - this is the only fish and chip shop in Salcombe - and they know it. That (and the fact that they know most Salcombe visitors are not short of money) explains why the prices are such a rip-off, roughly 50% more than other chip shops. What is inexcusable however, is that the chips are the worst I've ever had, try eating some strips of cardboard instead, that would be better! Received a mouth full from the woman behind the counter, for walking in the wrong door. No signs on the doors telling you which one to use and the doors are both next to each other. Both doors take you into the same area and there was no queue just a few people inside . I was on crutches, but she demanded I went back out the door and in the other. Another customer spoke up and said “what difference does it make and perhaps they should have signs if it mattered that much”. I couldn’t even be bothered to communicate with the women. I walked out the door and found another takeaway with excellent customer service and spent £45.. I work hard for my money and The Cod Father will not be getting any of it. Beyond rude and completely unnecessary.and just because you may be busy doesn’t mean you always will be. Customer service counts in any business.
