The distinctive Ethiopian/Eritrean cuisine has always been among my favourite. So I decided to stop, during a trip to Newcastle, in Salam just to have something to eat along the road. It turned out to be the best idea ever and the highlight of my trip. This is Ethiopian/Eritrean food at its finest, with strong yet subtle flavours, very aromatic and everything was freshly cooked. There was no long waiting time, the prices are very reasonable and the service was exceedingly friendly and helpful. I would recommend any of the combos, where you can combine the various vegetarian dishes with one of the meat dishes. It is only five minutes from the A19 road, so if you are passing by or you have to come to Middlesborough, treat yourself to this restaurant. I can assure you that you won't regret it!

Went for dinner on Saturday night and there was a steady stream of customers and full tables which is always a good sign. Didn't really know where to start with the menu so plumped for the shared 5 plates and asked the waitress for some recommendations although asked for the dishes to be mild as mum can't handle spicy food. Food was absolutely delicious and they were so accommodating when I asked for a fork for mum and extra napkins. No issues with the bill despite previous comments. I'd definitely go back. If you're smart enough to consider something as adventurous as an Ethiopian restaurant in that part of town, you're smart enough to appreciate delicious, authentic food that you can't get many other places. Parking at the Captain Cook multi storey car park is free after 6pm.

Had a fantastic meal for two here. Very authentic and encouraged to eat the meal with your fingers and scoop up with the traditional injera bread. We got the sharing platter for two and a couple of beers which was reasonably priced. A great experience, we took a menu home for future visits or collections. Portions were really big, we took two portions worth of leftovers home with us!

Absolutely rotten. Went here tonight, the food was disgusting. We ordered a bottle of wine and it was warm. When I paid the bill they just guessed the bill which was £10+ more than it should have been. Really not our thing.

OK so this is absolutley an Ethiopian restaurant and that is fine. The plate of food I was served was very good , being tasty and more than sufficient. The ambiance inside is quite nice. The fact that none of the serving staff spoke English would have been Ok other than there was a feeling that they did not want to engage at all which was rather off-putting. Finally their idea of how to put a bill together is not mine. A second menu was produced when it came to pay with higher prices but even then the bill which had been presented was too high. A poor show, though an apology was eventually forthcoming.

Very welcoming, friendly, relaxed and casual environment. Food was delicious and authentic - the injera was plentiful. Food served in a traditional manner on a sharing platter and eaten by hand just added to the experience and atmosphere. The aroma of the roasting coffee beans at the end of the meal was shared by the whole restaurant. Can’t wait to return.

Its offers something different, has a warm but chilled out atmosphere, and excellent home cooked food. We had a mixed vegetarian platter and it was delicious, and even had some to take home for our son to enjoy, and he gave it a thumbs up too. The traditional coffee is worth trying too.

Not been here for 11 months. Finished work here today and had to come in again. Amazing friendly people and very nice Eritrean and Ethiopian food. Great for meat eaters and vegetarians/ Vegans. Opens 2 pm til 10 pm. Completely different to your normal restaurant. Eat with traditional bread and fingers. Be prepared and give it a try… Amazing Experience.

Great different food. Ethiopian and Eritean, like nothing I have had. Went with my wife, we got the Salam Meadi (For Two People) for £23. We got 2 beef based dishes and 3 vegitarian. Really tastey. We were the only none Ethiopian/Eritean from what I could make out. I like that when abroad I like to go where the locals go. The 2 members of staff were great. The chef came out and asked us what we thought of it, she was wanting feedback. She was like a long lost auntie, making sure we were OK. I will go back. Loved the African MTV.

Have never had Eritrean/ Ethiopian food before and as we were visiting the area for a few days we thought we would try it and what a revelation it was We had the chef’s selection of meat and vegetarian dishes which were so tasty- they let us pick 5 dishes from the main menu which were then served to us hot and a little spicy with their bread style pancakes to pick the food up with Very traditional we believe A lovely bottle of wine to wash it all down with made for a fabulous evening Would recommend We asked for a dessert, which they didn’t normally do , but offered us their ice creams which they had bought from Aldi for themselves- what warm and generous people they are Thank you

We asked for a shared tasting platter for two as we had no idea of what the dishes on the menu were like. The chef asked us for our spice comfort levels and then brought out a platter, vegetables, meats and sauces. We had no idea what we were eating but it was all fabulous. One of us is exceptionally fussy and this was the first time they ate vegetables and enjoyed it. The attention given us felt personal and was appreciated. Enjoyable experience all around. Price was very reasonable and we will definitely return again

The menu is perfect, not too big and not too small. An awesome variety of vegetarian, vegan and meat options that puts alot of places to shame. It's so tasty!! Flavours that we'd never otherwise taste, what an experience. You get a real feel for the culture, and the chef talks to you about this, especially when doing the coffee ritual. Very attentive staff who are happy to recommend food options, they came to the table throughout the meal to see if we were okay. The food is so reasonably priced, dare I say cheap. We plan on going back here frequently. Delighted this place exists and survived lockdown!!

We arrived at the restaurant and, from the outside it’s not much to look at, as you walk in, you are hit with intoxicating smells and friendly smells. We were seated by a lovely gentleman that attended to us all evening, offering helpful suggestions. A main point that I truly loved was the rest of the customers. Of course not actually restaurant related but the type of energy and community the restaurant provides clearly brings in some wonderful and beautiful people, all of which were also happy to offer food suggestions. Food was a little spicy for me but I think I went in too heavy which I do often. No cutlery given, all eaten with a delightful lemony pancake - which suits our food choices down to a tea. The absolute star of the show was the coffee. It was a absolutely the best coffee I have ever tasted. The lady roasting the beans even came out before hand so we could smell the beans as they roasted. I just think I was blown away by the service and ease of the place. I would recommend on many levels, good, price, service, vibes and coffee!!!

Enjoyed the experience in lovely atmosphere. the food was good, not too hot, but tasty and quite different. Also they made a special dish for me that was gluten free, and if I had given them 3 days notice they would have made special pancake for me - so next time will advise them in time!

The food is east African - Eritrean/Ethiopian very authentic food.Whilst there are variations, most meals are served on a very large pancake. There are four main types of meat and also vegetarian. They are cooked with vegetables and spices remeniscent of India but it is completely different. The coffee was roasted for us while we waited and was one of the tastiest coffees that I have ever had. Very strong but not bitter served with sugar and ginger. Divine! The price was very cheap considering what you were given. Only problem was that it wasn't open until 2:00 o'clock.

Nobody ever answers the phone so we had to go in and was told we couldn't use our Meerkat Vouchers , we went to order the Non Vegetarian Platter as advertised on their menu - it turns out that there is no meat in it ????? False advertising or what - highly misleading how can a "non Vegetarian Platter" be for Vegetarians only. And nobody seems to speak English - we had to get a lad eating to Interpret for us ????We walked out In disgust.....

My husband and I shared the vegetarian platter, and I cannot stress enough how delicious it was. My only complaint is that it was too good, and I had to keep eating! We then had the coffee ceremony, which was soothing with the incense. The coffee itself was bittersweet and wonderful. As far as the atmosphere, the majority of the time we were alone, yet didn't feel as such. The owners sat near us and ate the very same meal we had, and were very friendly. The woman who served us answered my questions about the foods on our platter, and how they are made, and said she even sells the spices should you want to recreate the dish at home.If you live in Middlesbrough, or are ever passing through, you must stop in and eat at Salam. If you don't, you will regret having never tried it. Thank you to everyone at Salam.

Admittedly from the outside it doesn’t look up to much but inside couldn’t have been better. We were made to feel extremely welcome from the moment we stepped in. We were given help choosing from the menu and I’m so glad we were. The sharing platter we were given was beautifully presented and tasted out of this world. The coffee ceremony which followed the meal was first class. The coffee was so smooth. I’ll definitely be back. Great service. Great food. Great value for money

Shocking non existent service. Food took 1hour 45mins to arrive and when it did it was all cold. 2 hours in a restaurant with no heating and no functioning toilet. We left after refusing to eat cold food and were then asked to pay £24 for the 2x &8.50 sharing platter so check ur Bill people

Food was different, and incredible. Service excellent. What a find. There was a wide choice of vegetarian and vegan dishes as well as meat dishes. Very tasty. Went there for my friends birthday who said good things about it! I was not disappointed. Firstly, the staff was so awesome, really friendly and helpful. My little baby boy was unsettled so one of the ladies offered to put him in his buggy and rock him while I had my food. A little unconventional I know but as a mother there’s not many restaurants I have been able to go to and actually enjoy the food because I’m so occupied in keeping babies happy so for me it was brilliant.

Me and my family wanted to try a new eating experience, rather than our usual Parmo, Chinese, Indian, etc) and we were so glad we did. I'd never eaten Middle Eastern/African cuisine before and apart from cheeseburger and chips, I had never eaten a meal with my fingers before. The food so unbelievably cheap but so delicious, although I admit to having cheated towards the end of the meal and resorted to using one of the serving spoons to mop-up (shame on me for giving up so easily!). The subtle traditional background music was a nice touch which added to the relaxing community atmosphere and the service was extremely friendly and informative. We finished off our meal with a traditional coffee ceremony, complete with incense vapours, which provided a perfect ending to a lovely family evening out!

Owen hosted our wedding reception. Lovely family do (7 bridesmaids and 3 pageboys between 5 and 10) with an outside BBQ. Happy for us to put up a bouncy castle. Really relaxed feel. We put up gazebos in case it rained so we could cover an outside area to seat 48. We had a band inside later. Room to dance. Couldn’t have asked for more.

I've stayed here couple of nights. No food service, I understand it's a very quiet time of the year, but since you have in house guests, you'd think limited menu would be available. 3 members of staff too busy drinking wine and playing pool with locals. With this kind of attitude, I don't think new owners will survive till next October. I am giving one star for cold beer and bed in the bedroom
