He estado allí varias veces, las encuentro algo vagas y, a veces, olvidadizas.

Sakanatei is ideally placed if you're planning on shopping in the west end. A stone's throw from the Liberty store, it is a calm haven from the hectic streets. The interior is somewhat sterile & lacking in atmosphere but the staff are welcoming. There is an excellent choice of set lunch deals as well as an impressive a la carte menu. My Japanese friends were impressed by the sashimi; my fish chirubashi was fresh & the rice good. Prices are more than reasonable for the quality & location; I would definitely return for an authentic Japanese lunch experience.

Having watched so many authentic Japanese restaurants come and go in London, I'm glad this one looks set to stay. For a Mayfair restaurant (even though it's just on the edge) the ambience, decor, service and staff are not what you'd expect. Thank goodness! It's about as relaxed and unpretentious as you'll get in these parts. But that doesn't mean the service is sloppy. Most of the time they'll be almost too zippy but if it's obvious that you're in no rush, they'll let you graze at your own pace. At least until closing time draws near, then the pace really picks up, which is how it should be. And if you like the stuff that is served up on a conveyor belt, this probably isn't for you. It'll be much to fresh and flavoursome for your tastes ;-)

This is a truly 'Japanese' Japanese if that makes sense. Once inside you could be in Tokyo. The staff are Japanese. The menu is comfortably familiar to anyone used to this type of venue. It's a plain, sober environment. Somewhat tired. The food was good - both of us had the sushi set menu. Nice salad, nice soup, good sushi.Green tea nice. Also it's reasonably well priced. Why not 4 or more stars? Well it's one of a clutch of these restaurants in Mayfair. They are much the same and none out any effort in to excel. On balance, and whilst I appreciate the simplicity, isn't the money better spent at Sake no Hana which had better food, a great space and design and natural light in the eating area?

The worst Japanese restaurant I've ever been to! We visited the restaurant after 8:30pm. There were no more than 6 tables occupied. We only ordered 5 dishes including appetizers, sashimi and noodles. It took them an hour to serve the first four, and another half an hour to realize they actually forgot one. When we asked the manager to give us an explanation, he offered his "apology" by asking "So what?! What do you want?!" ...It's our first visit, and no doubt it will be the last one as well! P.s. The food was just ok, kind of overpriced. Given the time we wasted, it doesn't worth at all!

Was really looking forward to taking my daughter here for dinner as we love Japanese food and it was very close to our hotel. Upon entering, the waitress asked if we had a booking. Hearing that we didn't, she asked her manager if we could have a table...which I thought strange, seeing as the whole upstairs was completely empty. The manager looked at us and said (note: to the waitress, not to us, despite being right in front of us) we could only have one if we spent a minimum of 20GPB per head. Now... usually I would have no problem with this if I were with another adult, however...I was with my THREE year old child. I asked if there could be an exception for my daughter, to which he said ....again, to the waitress and not to us...No. Absolutely ridiculous. If they put as much effort into the food as they do customer service, one can only imagine what the food quality is like. Happy to take my business elsewhere any day.

What an utter joke.Having lived in Japan for 16 years, I was excited to try the Japanese food at Sankatei in Maddox Street. What we found was a proprietor (who clearly owns the establishment) who did not want us to sit at the upstairs counter and instead ushered us downstairs into their soulless basement where we were the only people there. Indeed, despite the "reserved" tables, nobody else arrived during the evening. Moreover, on our exit, the upstairs counter was filled only with Asian people and there was room for other patrons. The food was distinctly average and they've done a tremendous job of disguising their pricing under the heading "seasonal prices". We ordered negitoro maki at the end of the meal to be shocked with the price that each handroll was valued by the establishment at £17/each. Our bill, with a fewl rolls and some house sake came to £117.00.This was the first and last time we will ever enter that establishment and would never recommend anyone looking for wholesome and well priced Japanese food to support this restaurant.Buyer beware.

I had grilled mackerel lunch set with rice, miso soup, small sea weed dish, and pickles. It was so good and authentic. Fish was grilled perfectly, crisp outside and soft and juicy inside. However, what make this place stand out from other places are care for accompaniment. Rice was great and miso soup perfect and even pickles had nice homemade authentic taste, reminded me of food loving aunts kitchen back in Japan. So why only 4? Their lunch is so popular now that you got to get their at 12 and many people were happy and chatty including us and maybe due to acoustic of the basement, it was quite noisy. We get together regularly for lunch and visited almost all main Japanese restaurants for lunch in west end between us. Today we ate here and we all agreed that this is one of the best. Firstly they allowed me book for 8 at busy lunch time and gave us big oval table downstairs. Staff members were all very attentive from offering to keep our coats and bags to letting us order first while we were waiting for some people running late to keep what we wanted. One mum had to come with her toddler who could eat only avocado roll which was not on the menu, but they made them without any problem. Chirashi sushi we ordered tasted excellent. Without any doubt the best I've ever tasted in London, fresh fish, nice seasoned egg, and finally excellent rice!! Rice is as important for sushi as fish. The clientele were mostly Japanese- which was nice as I could surreptitiously check my technique and also be confident that the food was authentic. The prices were s pleasant surprise- and the service consistent with the food being freshly prepared as the orders came in- a little slower than in a chain but not unreasonable. The decor is spartan but the food makes up for it.

My daughter and I arrived at 1:20 and were told that there would be no sushi or sashimi for "a while". So we ordered some miso soup and edamame beans and asked for them to be served while we waited for our californian rolls. After half an hour we asked again for the miso soup and beans. Clearly they had forgotten us. We also asked how long we still needed to wait for our sushi! They responded that they did not know, but thought it might be at least another 20 minutes!Meanwhile people on other tables were all served sushi and sashimi ahead of us! We felt like outcasts!Eventually we had had enough, cancelled the order and left (having paid £15 for our soup and beans!Definitely not a restaurant to go to if you want to eat actual food.

..for London standards. An authentic Japanese restaurant, run by Japanese, with an interesting outdated interior (often I enjoy this). Can become quite expensive, especially with the many season price tags and the Daily Specials written in Japanese only on the black board with no prices. The specials you need to ask for more information, and a sweet helpful lady will come and translate every dish (try hard to remember!). Some nice interesting sounding dishes which you don't often get in other Japanese restaurants in London. We tried the seabream wrapped with seaweed tempura and ponzo sauce which was very nice. The seared chutoro with ponzo sauce unfortunately was a lost opportunity, the quality of the fish was no lacking, but it could've been cooked with more carefully, as it was overdone with the sad searing. The sushi was fresh, good, well formed pieces. Forgot to say no wasabi but that was my own issue. The eel rice bowl was good, meaty eel, needed to be a bit more tender and more sauce on the rice but overall good. Service a little slow at start but caught up pace. staff are friendly. Will probably come back for sushi sometimes. Been trying to find a reliable sushi/few sushi restaurants in London.. almost having got round to try them all now.

This place is owned run by Japanese staff so don't expect the service to be great, BUT the sushi here is the best I have tried in London. They offer fresh wasabi, which I highly recommend, and traditional japenese dishes. If you have been to Japan you, this is identical to the food they serve there. It's amazing for people who love Japanese food.

food is good and I presume it is essential for restaurant but we felt quite “screwed” by the option in menu called "seasonal price" it stands in the middle of other options that all cost 15-20 pounds so it seemed natural that this seasonal price wont be anything over the top so we ordered without asking, great was our surprise to see that his special price for (I don't deny very good sashimi) but still was 55 pounds. It is quite middle range place , feels like family restaurant so obviously one does not expect prices like that appear out of blue on the bill. I just suggest you ask for the price before you order or stick to price labelled options. In overall it just left bitter taste in out mouths even if food had nothing to do with it just felt like they put the price they wanted as we stupidly did not ask before order.Service in overall is quite poor, waiters speak badly English and gentlemen who greeted us upon entrance said to us straight away “if you are not going to spend 20 pound a head you can’t eat here”, thank you, I won’t anymore there are plenty of good Japanese restaurants in London where I am happy event to pay more but without being treated this way.

Probably the best quality Sushi (strictly speaking Fish only=Sashimi) in London, but the atmosphere is sad, like in the office..The most difficult part for a non Japanese customer would be that all good menu is hand written in Japanese on the today's special board, and there is no price. You need ask for the board and translation. The bill never be lower than I expected, but I just go for the quality. Service is nothing special or poor as this price range, sometime a little slow especially when crowded. They are nice and friendly, though. Therefore, I can not take anyone except who does really understand the taste of Sashimi and someone who ONLY care for the quality of food.

I'm a big fan of Japanese food. Having dined at myriads of Japanese restaurants in the US, UK, China, Taiwan and Japan, I would say this is the best I've been to outside Japan. Fishes are fresh and tasty; Ochazuke is authentic; the dessert tastes not too sweet. Everything there feels like in Japan.

I went this restaurant for lunch with my friend. I called them to book a table one day before but they didn't accept my booking. I asked if all table were fully booked, but they said no and told me to come to the restaurant at 12 noon and we would have a table for 2. We arrived at 12 sharp next day and there were no tables available and we were seated at a oval table (10 people including us were squeezed in and it was so uncomfortable...).Both of us wanted to order "Chirashi Sushi", but a waitress told us that all Sushi and Sashimi menu would take more than 30min to be served but other lunch set would be served quicker. As we had another plan after lunch, we ordered other menu. However our food also took more than 30min to be served and it was not as good as we expected. We were so annoyed by their service and disappointed with their food. Besides, we had a little trouble at the cashier...This is a kind of restaurants where I will never go back again ....

I have eaten at many sushi restaurants around the world, including Japan. This restaurant is quaint and simple. Nothing about this place says fancy or high end. It is hidden on Maddox st. If you blink you would miss it. And the signage from the street would not attract anyone who is not familiar with this restaurant because all other restaurants in the area have much more noticeable signage. I am still not sure why I even decided to come inside, I guess I was that desperate for sushi. Even when you look at the menu from outside, the prices are a little high. As I stood outside debating if I should enter, I looked inside at the staff. I knew they were all Japanese and knew they had pride in both their professions and their establishment from the way they so carefully and attentively did all their tasks inside the restaurant. I also noticed that the other customers inside we're people who seemed well rounded and interesting. I decided to enter. This restaurant turned out to be a magical experience. The environment of the restaurant makes you feel like you we're in a small Japanese town family restaurant. The sushi was remarkable. Every single piece was carefully cut and tasted remarkably. You do not need wasabi or soya for this sushi. The other customers are people with a passion for sushi and who have travelled the world and know of fine restaurants. It is a classy place with delightful food and a cozy enchanting atmosphere. I would highly recommend this place.

I ate here for the first time last week with a friend. Hidden away in Maddox Street it is 5 minutes walk from Itsu in Hanover Square. Friendly greeting and plenty of room downstairs where you can sit and enjoy authentic Japanese food. I had the tempura/sashimi set meal and miso soup. It was delicious and relaxing. The sashimi was identical quality to itsu (average) and tempura was crisp, light and tasty. We were in and out in 55 minutes and it was a very pleasant experience. For the price point the quality is good and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. If you prefer to sit in comfort and enjoy your food then cross the street from Hanover Square and try Sakanatei.

This is one of our favourites in London. Although the special menus (which is highly recommended vs. the regular menu) are all in Japanese (and we don't speak Japanese), the waitresses are always incredibly patient and are willing to translate and describe each dish to us. You have to be a little adventurous and willing to try new things but this place creates a whole new definition to what Japanese food is and it is so much more than sushi or soba noodles. Definitely worth trying and we keep going back for more.

The diner on Maddox Street is far from short of options, ranging from Hibiscus (over-rated in my opinion) and Goodman (well worth a visit) to the more mundane Patara (Thai) and Browns (part of the chain). It would therefore be easy to overlook Sakana-tei, especially given its unprepossessing exterior, perhaps something one would expect to find on a less prosperous backstreet or circa ten years ago. However, do not be fooled. I lunched here with a friend recently on his recommendation and will undoubtedly...

I went there about a few months ago when I was still on vegetarian diet. My friend and I ordered the cold udon with tempura, deep fried tofu, fatty tuna sushi, yellow tail sashimi, unagi don and a bottle of sake. The restaurant also gave us a free taster which I can't remember what it was but it was so tasty. Even though I couldn't eat fish, I could still tell the fish was so fresh and it must be delicious (based on experience). The udon was amazing as well. I just loved everything they put on the table. The waitress was very polite and helpful. I also notice that they had a special menu written on the black board in Japanese (for Japanese customers I supposed). The bill turned out just over 100 pounds but I think it was totally worth it.
