Saffron Indian Restaurant in Gwynedd

Have been to Indian restaurants all over the world and ordered chicken tikka masala which was extremely poor. Looked like chicken in Italian sauce but without tue flavour. Taste just of coconut which is odd in a masala. The butter chicken was horrendous this is suppose to be in a flavoursome tomato sauce with subtle herbs and came in what looked like pure ghee! Weirdly the only thing that was ok was the chips maybe they need to reappraise their menu. Very very poor all 5 of us extremely disappointed. We will not be back ever!

Wow wow wow... during our stay in Barmouth, we had two take aways. On both occasions the staff were friendly, helpful, and polite. The food was fresh and very delicious. I would recommend the Saffron to anyone who visits Barmouth. A big thank you from The Cobleys!

Absolutely delicious! We had a takeaway from here while staying in Talybont and it did not disappoint. The staff were friendly, the restaurant looked clean and cozy, the food was delicious and had good sized portions. The lamb tikka masala was one of the best curries I’ve ever had. I’ll definitely be back here if I am back in this area again.

First time I have ever been to a restaurant and been told there is a minimum amount you have to order for collection even though I am stood in the restaurant so I was unable to get the breads and rice I was hoping for!

Visited here while staying in Barmouth, we booked a table which is highly recommended as the place is very small. Food was very good apart from the Madras which was too hot , more like vindaloo, ( and the wife has madras every time at an indian) the price as well was expensive, including the the house wine at £20 , its the same one we buy at tesco for £7 ! So if you need an Indian it's the only one in the village so you don't have much choice

We were sceptical as very mixed reviews, however we throughly enjoyed our food. Very tasty & generous portion sizes. The staff were all very friendly and attentive, even though they were very busy. We would definitely visit again the next time we come to Barmouth. I would recommend booking a table as they do get very busy.

After reading mixed reviews , we decided to book a table for dinner on a Saturday evening. So glad we booked, as the restaurant was so busy. Thought we had ordered starters, but realised we hadn't, which in the end was a good thing as the mains we ordered were more than enough! Ordered Poppadoms, Chicken Jalfrezi, Nawabi Khana, Vegetable Rice, Bombay Aloo & Keema Naan. The meal was delicious, no issues at all. The wait time was really good also. Although Saffron is approx. 50 mins drive from where we live, we will definately be visiting again!

Awesome curry. First time trying here after hearing mixed reviews but we were not disappointed. One of the best currys I have ever tasted. Very fresh ingredients. And the jalfrezi was awesome. See this Friday :)

Been visiting Barmouth for years and today was the first time visiting this restaurant, food tasty and plenty of it, staff excellent, overall experience first class and probably the best curry I have ever tasted

We went here last minute, the food did not disappoint. We had the mixed starter to share, then for mains Paneer Shashlik (delicious) and Balti Chilli Chicken. The Peshwari Naan was really good. Staff were friendly too. Also the prices were very reasonable, we were stuffed! We would definitely come back, I think the overall review rating on trip advisor as quite harsh, yes it's nothing spectacular inside but the food and pricing were spot on!

Highly recommended Indian takeaway. The food was tasty, fresh and hot. We ordered whilst on holiday so didn’t have any knowledge of Saffron prior; however it was great and would certainly order again. The wait time was a little longer than originally quoted when ordering, but the restaurant was busy and the additional wait was worth it.

The very best Indian meal we have ever experienced, the food was so fresh, tender and tasty. Unbelievable meal, will definitely go again and definitely worth the visit. I was cautious due to some of the reviews but it was just magnificent.

Probably the best curry house we have been to. What a gem of a find. Not the fanciest but the best. The Balti and Nepalese were divine. The naan breads so fresh. No photos as we ate it all. Thank you!!

We all decided we’d love a curry so rang and booked Saffron’s , it was fantastic and Such good service too . Lovely lady served us and she was very friendly . Food was fabulous. We will definitely be back when we next visit Barmouth .

We were lucky enough to get a table without booking after the fireworks last night. The food was outstanding, best we’ve had in a while. The staff are so welcoming and friendly. Would absolutely recommend this restaurant and will definitely be back when we return to Barmouth.

It was a busy evening in Barmouth and we were looking for a bite and the Saffron managed to squeeze us in. We waited an hour at a nearby pub whilst having a pint and then returned to the restaurant for dinner. The staff, although young, were very attentive and served us quickly. We are tandoori chicken, Dahl and saag aloo and biriyani. We also ate chapthis and salad and it was all very delicious. My husband is Sri Lankan and quite fussy if he eats out at restaurants but he thoroughly enjoyed the food. The staff coped with a big family group, a large group of fellas in a night out and couples and all were treated the same with courtesy and politeness and had quick service. We would have no hesitation going back to eat here.

The food was just great, good size portions and great value, will definitely be going again when in the area, I've been to a lot of Indian restaurants and I would say this is one of the best.

We visited in the evening as a group of four friends, for a meal booked at 8pm.Very disappointed with Covid precautions taken by Saffron and it's staff. On entering, signs reminded us to wear face masks and to respect social distancing so I expected to feel safe and that Covid guidelines would be followed. However, social distancing was impossible as tables were so close together that they barely had 2 feet between tables. It felt very uncomfortable. There were 4 staff, 3 had masks, 2 of whom wore their masks on their chins for the complete time we were in the restaurant, they never used them to cover mouth and nose and the third member of staff wore it on her chin for the majority of the time, only raising it to cover nose and mouth twice during our evening visit. Due to the closeness of the tables when staff served our food they had to stand very close to us, unmasked. Initially the door was open for ventilation - however a customer in shorts and T shirt stated he felt cool, so shut the door making a comment that he might die of hyperthermia instead of Covid if the door was left open! Staff made no comment, did not speak with the customer and did not reopen the door.The two starters ordered on our table were brought before we had even finished our poppadoms - which felt as though they were rushing us so that someone else could have our table quicker, as it was very busy..My food was not hot, barely warm - I had to ask for all my food, including the rice, to be reheated. They did apologise. However, it took a while to bring it back, and when they did they initially put it all on a table in the middle of the room instead of bringing it straight to our table! I waited again and after a short while 2 of the the three dishes were brought to our table but they had to be reminded to pass me the rice that was left on a table in the middle of the crowded restaurant.I had been looking forward to this meal at the end of our walking holiday - and was really disappointed with the Covid precautions not in place, staff attitudes and food not served hot enough. Such a shame - as when I finally received the food I had ordered the flavour was lovely. I appreciate that it was a really busy time on a Bank Holiday weekend - but I did not get the service I expected and have always received from other Indian restaurants.

This place is lovely on arrival...spacious and well furnished. Unfortunatley, there seems to be miscommunication between servers and chef...Food is great but not the food that was ordered..often ignore specific requests, although accepted and agreed at the time.Also, food for kids and adults was mixed up, so children were given the spicy dish, and adults the mild one.Bartender was really friendly and knocked money off the bill.

Great variety on menu all fleshly cooked. Had to wait an hour for order but this was no problem as lovely pub next door (ahh great). Place was very popular but now I know why, great meal.

Excellent little Indian restaurant. The girls work tirelessly. Nice portions. Very tasty curries. Although the pre cooked chicken was a bit dry. But nice. Nice bottle of wine. Poppadoms nice and crispy. Chutneys nice. Chilli sauce very moorish. Very busy place. You got to book. Would definitely return.

Last night camping in Llanbedr, ordered take away and collected on arrival back to camp find part of the order missing. Out of a family of 11 people a 12 year old boy has had to go hungry because they missed the order which was very specific.

Had 2 takeaways from here during our holiday in the area. Food was fantastic!! Butter chicken and chicken vindaloo both times. So much chicken in the vindaloo.. one of the best I’ve had. Nice friendly staff. All good. Can’t fault the place

Booked this restaurant for my son’s 10th birthday. It was his choice and this is always his go to place to eat! Food was amazingly, staff were attentive and my son had an amazing evening and was made to feel very special. We will return!

We ordered a takeawy from the Saffron.. the menu was different from other Indian takeaways hence the apoealSadly the food was not hot and the stuffes peppers were lacking the cheese as advertised...The lamb Nepalese was tasty Some staff had masks under their chin!!

This curry house is amazing. The food is excellent I had the chicken vindaloo with fried pilau rice and garlic naan with poppadoms an sauces. Vindaloo was perfect with just the right amount of chicken. Staff are very friendly, also a little bar inside too.

Excellent curry at the Saffron Restaurant whilst on holiday in Barmouth. Service was slightly slow but it was busy holiday weekend. Very good, would recommend.

Staff very friendly and good food at a decent price,beers are limited to bottles and £3.30 for a 330ml lager a little overpriced but the food prices are very good. All in all it ticked the boxes for our outing, many thanks, the Indian guy originally from Oldham was extra special.

Been eating here for many years as we have a family cottage in Barmouth. Comprehensive menu, good prices and swift service...looking forward to being able to sit inside and have a meal as it’s takeaway only at the moment.

We have been coming to Barmouth for over 20 years, always enjoyed an Indian from Saffron Last visited in September and had the most divine butter chicken, upon return today we couldn’t wait to tuck in, VERY disappointed to say the least. Butter chicken was just chicken floating in watery milk - not a thick creamy sauce like you’d expect. The best way to describe it would be a cheap milkshake with added water !! Couldn’t eat it We also had a chicken madras which was equally as poor and watered down The vegetable rice was ok but again this was not as it used to be, pretty much an uncle bens micro pouch ...Unsure what’s gone on here, whether it’s changed hands or just a chef mistake/issue but we won’t be going here again sadly I hate to write bad reviews, and this is actually my first - as harsh as it seems myself and my family where all really disappointed and I feel like both the restaurant itself and and anyone wanting a takeaway deserve to know the poor quality of watery unflavoured currys that we where given tonight Really hope that improvements are made, a real shame !

This is spice cuisine at its very best. Wales being in "Lockdown" it is always a nice treat to order a carry-out from Saffron. You receive delightful tasty food at a very fair price and you always receive good and friendly service.Our appetisers were popodoms with a tasty chutney tray. We opted "out" of starters as all the main dishes (and a large selection) are ever so satisfying. We went for lamb and chicken jalfrezis, chaichen shaslick and chicken tikka massala, accompanied with vegetable and pilau rice.Delightful and so enjoyed. Bonus - a 10 per cent discount on our order!!

Food was average very tasty and great service. Not posh surroundings but good enough! Would visit again, also noticed very busy on the take away side as only a small restaurant.

Best to book, due to covid, they are limited. We waited on the bench outside for a table to be cleared, cleaned and sanitized, we where given the option to wait inside, but we where quite happy to wait outside. Upon entrance, greeted by friendly staff, there is a table for hand sanitizer. All the staff where friendly, and lovely. The food was amazing. Larger than usual portions, but fantastic tastes. Delicious curry, friendly staff. We both chose Napalese dishes - they were superb. Neither of had had Napalese curries before - well worth a try.

It was just average and it’s the only Indian restaurant in Barmouth. They didn’t have any of the wine on the wine list but what we had was fine. It was lucky it was eat out to help out which made it slightly better.

We visited as a last resort, having found most local eateries fully booked due to only running on 50% bookings. On arrival, we were seated immediately and our order taken fairly quickly. I ordered the chicken tikka chilli massala which was ridiculously hot and my partner the balti akbari cham cham which he really enjoyed. We were sat feet from the bar area where they were taking takeaway orders (loudly) every few minutes. Great for business - not so for diners. If you're an asian connoisseur, you'll be disappointed but as we we're just having a few days away it did the job.

Staying for a few days in Barmouth and given the current circumstances there is a captive market for people who want to grab a take away or eat out, our experience feels like this. We were quite looking forward to an Indian but were really disappointed here. We booked the day before by just popping in - no problems there. Overall the food was not great - bland base sauces with a few bits of lemon or other spices added. We tasted each other’s curries and they were both the same. There’s not a lot more I can say - mass produced for the predominantly take away trade and As the only Indian for miles no much effort for the trade.For Covid - interesting - one manager was walking around with one glove on and one glove off , hands everywhere, not sure what the rationale for that was. Another staff member wore gloves for everything, the waitresses however were very good with hand washing and no gloves. When we asked why gloves were on all the time we got a confusing answer, not good for real confidence or hand washing .

We ordered a takeaway while on holiday locally.We enjoyed the meal, it wasn't amazing but very tasty and considerably better than the chinese we previously had. I saved the left overs for another night so it must have been reasonably good or I'd have thrown them away. Reasonably priced.I can't comment on decor or staff as I didn't go to collect it.

Me and my girlfriend had a takeaway from here on Saturday and it was ok.My girlfriend had a tandoori chicken and she said the meat was good but was disappointed that they did not put any salad.I had a chicken chilli masala and although the meat was tasty the sauce lacked any real taste and needed a little bit more chilli. The nan and rice was ok. Service was fine and portion size was good

Lovely Indian with great food. The owner Bash and his staff were great. Was great to find out the owner Bash’s brother owns our favourite Indian restaurant The Candolim in Stalybridge. Small world!! We had a great night with a great Atmosphere. Will definitely be visiting again.

We booked in the afternoon and had no difficulty. We had a lovely meal and the staff were excellent. Recommended!

Worst curry and nan bread I have ever had. Poor customer service too. Save your pennies and go elsewhere though they have the monopoly in Barmouth.

This is the worst Indian restaurant we have ever been to. The food was disgusting. We had Chicken Tikka Masala which tasted like Campbell’s condensed tomatoe soup with chicken in it. I would not eat here again and definitely wouldn’t recommend it.

We had poppadoms, lamb bhuna, saag aloo, tandoori mixed grill, keema naan and pilau rice. Most of the food was fine, there was something I didn't recognise in the mixed grill but you know. The keema naan wasn't very good and they did the usual takeaway trick of missing out an item but because you've got a takeaway and you've only discovered it when you're back at your tent and can't be arsed so I'll never know whether the pilau rice was any good. It was fine, but it could have been better. Covid measures okay.

Visited once no Asian music, no table cloths , drinks very expensive, no draught beer , this would be £7 pound for a pint Masala was horrible it tasted more like water the juice did and it was runny no flavour The nann bread was water thin But Madras was okBut never go again

Visited on first day of opening after lockdown. We were sat at a window table at the front. Good parts:Asian food was good.One of our party was a non curry eater and had Scampi & chips, which was very poor - everything was cooked from frozen; the scampi overdone, the chips barely done. Bad parts:- the place is filthy. The window ledge we sat next to was covered in a layer of dust and dead flies. The windows don’t appear to have been cleaned in a long time either. - we found the service terrible. Staff and management ignored us and were more concerned about discussing football with their mates. - drink options poor and expensive. Soft drinks are served warm with no ice. - oddly, most of the light bulbs in the light fittings don’t work- there is no ambience - no Asian music. It’s all regrettable as the curry is good We won’t return.

We walked in at 8pm on a Sunday night and the staff were very friendly and served us very readily. Our beverages we served immediately, shortly followed by fresh poppadoms. The starters and mains and sides including naan tasted extremely fresh and were very well cooked, Staff were perfectly attentive. Prices we also very reasonable. Would definitely visit again.

Been this place many times before and it was ok ,not the best Indian but average,service always slow We booked a couple of weeks ago For a table of six When we turned up they had given our table away to walk ins so we had to wait for an hour next door in the Tillman .Last night we had booked a table for 6 and after confirming the booking several times after the last episode found we had no table and they just did not care and were extremely rude .We will never go back and would not recommend this place too anyone

Popadums fresh, lovely mint sauce and mango chutney, but no onion salad in the pack. Curries were watery and lacking flavour. One Korma the chicken wasn’t properly cooked. 2 x cheese naans hardly any cheese. 1 x keema naan, no bloody meat in it !. Garlic naan missing from order Considering the staff were so polite, it’s a shock the food was so poor. £62 wastedStay regularly at Sunnysands, but won’t be ordering from here again. We came to Barmouth for a 2 night stay and ended up eating here both nights. Staff are very friendly and attentive. The food is beautiful. Will definitely eat here again when we come back.

Finding ourselves in Barmouth at the end of the tourist season and many places closed for the winter we tried The Saffron...the staff were very friendly and the food was a delight. Tried the Chicken Jaflong as it sounded a little like my favourite Ceylon which is a rarity these days. It was really good, full of flavour and just the right level of heat. My companion had a Chicken Pathia that she described as one of the best she had tried and the accompanying rice, naan and Okra were all fresh and perfect too. It was all so good we went back the next night and had Chicken Tikka Madras and Jalfrezi with sides and again not disappointed in any way.If you’re in Barmouth I strongly suggest you try this place, you’ll be glad you did I think.

Well we had the best curries here than we have had in a very long time. Everything was spot on and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We will certainly be back for another fantastic time.

We ordered a takeaway. Took a long time for it to be ready, but the order was correct and the food was good, other than the chips which weren't great. Cost was a little above what I'd expect.

We visited Saffron on a busy Friday evening. We hadn't booked but we were warmly greeted and a table was soon found for us. The staff were extremely attentive and the service was quick and efficient. I had the chicken tikka sag this time which was 'okay'. It was not bursting with flavour and the chicken was quite tough but it was certainly not the worst meal I have had. My partner who is not used to eating Indian food opted for the chicken korma and he enjoyed it immensely. I have eaten here before. I would not say the food is 'amazing' but it is 'okay'. Would I eat here again - yes.

Went here in July with the family. The food was fantastic. Had a takeaway in October and it was without question the worst takeaway I and my other half have ever had. It's was watery and tasteless. Won't be going back.

We went on a Friday night after reading several mixed reviews. Lovely staff, really welcoming and a cracking lamb madras. Don’t be put off by the odd bad review. We really enjoyed it and would definitely go again.

We hadn't booked anything, went out to eat but everywhere was either closed, closing or fully booked. This restaurant was full but they said they would fit us in half an hour later, we went for a drink in the pub next door and they came and fetched us when our table was ready. The staff were so friendly, the service was great and so was the food

It's a very good British Indian restaurant. Living in Barmouth, I've eaten here... oh!.. it must be 50 times, and the quality of the food is always good - I can recommend everything I've tried on the menu and I've tried most things. Particular favourites are Jalfrezzi and Jaflong or any tandoori dish. I occasionally go 'hot' too and here I can particularly recommend the chicken naga curry. Service is good too and you can't knock the prices either. It's not one of those newer, slightly posy Indian Street Food type places - some of which are really good, but they tend to be a more expensive... No this is a typical, old-style, curry house, but one that is really good at what it does. It's pleasantly decorated, but it can feel a little cramped when full - which it often is in the summer.

Went Sunday early evening with hesitation after reading reviews. Friendly guys waiting on, lots of locals coming in for takeaways and regulars eating in. Meal was very good so if you want a curry while in Barmouth would recomend.

Very disappointed. Paid £25 for 2 takeaway meals (no starters) Tasteless main course - very oily and seemingly just spooned into the takeaway carton from a standard pot of ‘curry’ Pretty much taking the mick out of anyone wanting a decent Indian meal. STAY CLEAR.

If it’s late then this is pretty much the only show in town for a sit down meal. Very generic food and just like your average Indian.

The food i ordered was disgusting and tasteless! Not too mention cold! Complained to one particular member of staff, who was very rude and slightly aggressive! Avoid this place!! To add to all of this! The it’s not exactly the cleanest place of ever been to! Worst Indian restaurant ever!!!!

After a walk of 15 miles, my family and I came here very hungry and looking forwards to a filling dinner. We were not disappointed! The food was delicious and satisfied everyone. Thank you for a really enjoyable experience.

I love tarka dhal & am always disappointed in other restaurants when it comes out thin & weak tasting. In Saffron it was the best I’ve ever had, full of flavour, thick,with chickpeas & very, very moreish!

Chicken Tikka Masala just tasted of coconut. Dahl was like a thin soup. The rest of what we ordered was basic and under-whelming. It’s 2019 and I’d expect an Indian restaurant to have moved on from this uninspired version of eighties curry house food. And while the service wasn’t at fault as such it seemed all a bit of an effort for them and we didn’t feel particularly welcome. Seating was all a bit cramped too.

Had a curry whilst on holiday here.. thought it was lovely. Had garlic chilli chicken, naan bread and popadoms. The curry was very different to what I’m used to back home but it was still very nice. Couldn’t fault it

Lovely meal, very helpful staff who went and asked the chef before I ordered to make sure my meal would be gluten free. I was delicious. Very resonable prices too.

We visited on the last night of a 4 day break, and it made a pleasant change from the rest of the food that was on offer in the town.

Food was good and decent quantity. Service was friendly enough. Not the best curry I've ever had, but certainly not the worst. Pleasant enough visit.

Spent the weekend in Barmouth, walked in with no prior knowledge of Saffron. My wife and myself had a lovely meal and a really pleasant dining experience. Really tasty food at a reasonable price and the staff couldn't do enough. Thanks Saffron, we will return.

A bit noisy as there was a group of about12/14 young students, although they were very well behaved. It’s very popular as it was fully booked. Recommended.

Booked for 2 people for partners birthday, whose favourite food is Indian. Ordered food with staff like it was a chore for them. Poppadoms and dips arrived, arrived cold poppadoms and watery, tasteless dips. Starters of Shish Kebab looking anaemic on the plate and garlic mushrooms which when I tried were luke warm, barely cooked watery mushrooms with lazy garlic. I had one mouthful and put it to the side, bearing in mind I am not a fussy eater and usually enjoy my food it must of been bad. How can anyone manage to mess up making garlic mushrooms? My partner ate half of the kebab, which was tasteless and undercooked. We then spoke to member of staff to cancel our main courses. I complained and when went to pay for our drinks was told I had to pay for what we had had because it had come out from the kitchen and been served! I was appalled at their attitude when it was obvious we had not eaten the food and gave good reason why. I ended up paying, then we went to a local pub and had crisps for his birthday meal as it was too late to order anything.

In the middle of town and full on the night of our visit. Service ok but you get the impression they want you in and out as quick as possible.Cramped inside.Wife ate ginger prawn enjoyed it.The other meal was lamb khorma, with really chewy lamb.

We ate here on one night during our holiday whilst we were staying at the Hendre Mynach Campsite.

Went here with friends had a lovely meal a mixture of curries between us, and chicken and chips meal for one of us, great service and a decent price. Will be going back next time we are in Barmouth.

Visited here for an evening meal as it’s the only Indian in Barmouth we thought we would give it a try despite reading bad reviews. The chicken korma I ordered was nice although it did lack slightly in flavour but nothing abit of salt didn’t sort out. The keema naan was ok the meat inside did look abit cheap and appeared nothing like the Indian we have at home although it was nice. Very reasonable prices! Could be better but all in all not a bad place to go and eat.
