I absolutely love the food here. The pie and mash is one of the best around. However, I do also go and eat breakfast there a fair bit and it's definitely the best in the area and exceptionally good value for money. Freshly cooked food where they don't skimp on portions is amazing. The chef does lovely cakes (defo try the cherry bakewell!), although I would say he sometimes gets his recipes slightly wrong as they sink in the middle but still taste wonderful lol One thing that lets them down in the young girl that serves in there who is grumpy and looks like she's been sucking on lemons. Brighten up a bit! She's the only reason why I have taken off mark. I felt like putting it back cos Rodders makes up for a lot of things :)

Best pie and mash I've had for a long time. I always thought Maureens and Whites at Walton on the Naze were the best but can honestly say in my opinion this is better. I was brought up with pie and mash, Roman Rd being one of my haunts but moved to Bristol now and none around here so order from Maureens.

On a recent visit to Essex, having moved to the midlands, I was desperate for a taste of proper East End pie and mash. I chose this one in Hornchurch as I could park near by and pick up a take away before heading back to the M25. I ordered my take away and filled up on a single pie and mash to fortify me for the journey and to taste their wares (as Simple Simon once said to the pie man…) Very nice! Service was excellent and take away was well wrapped and made it home safely. I think this shop is now called Al’s.

This is not a proper "east end " pie and mash shop. Went in there yesterday with family and the food was really poor. The pies were quite small and not freshly cooked , very dry. My wife and daughter had the eels which were thin and really, really small pieces ,about 1cm. long, pathetic portions. Most of us had really bad indigestion after eating there. We will not be going back.

I was a child when I first went into a pie and mash shop and loved it...lots of vinegar and lots of pepper on the parsley sauce...Later on people tried to copy the real thing eg: instant mash etc., so I did not go again for years...My husband and I went into Roy's in Hornchurch and we thoroughly enjoyed it..cost a bit more than a shilling but tasted just as good...will definitely go again.

Really fancied pie and mash today so I thought I'd give this place a try. First impressions were good - the place was spotless and the service was friendly. Ordered double pie, double mash and liquor. Not cheap at £6.50 but not unreasonable. The mash and liquor were good but as someone previously stated the pies were over cooked and a bit tasteless. Next time I'll plan a bit better and head up to the east end where there are a number of better places.

When I lived in Hornchurch (until a few months ago) this was one of the places where I would drop in. I still go back to Hornchurch occasionally, and would go to Roy's again. The decor, ambience and furniture would win no prizes, but such is not the objective of a pie and mash shop, and the place is clean. The service is friendly, and they clearly enjoy good local trade for eating in and taking away, often, clearly, for families. The food is clearly made fresh, and not kept about, being warmed in a salamander. I might wish for some stronger flavours, sometimes; but I wonder whether this desire perhaps seems from the introduction of more spiced cuisines, from Europe and AsiaThese places should be more widely supported.

I hadn't had shop pie & mash for a very very long time & went here with some friends on a bit of a nostalgia trip . Can only say I really wished I hadn't bothered as the meal was a big disappointment. The mash was OK, though scraping it all over the side of the plate doesn't make for the most appetising presentation. The pies had a minced meat filling that was almost completely tasteless, which was probably a blessing in disguise & the liquor was obviously made with dried parsley which was equally tasteless. I know this is basically cafe food but it still needs to have some taste. I have no idea how this place compares with the other pie & mash shops in the area, but you can get a much better meal in Moon's, just along the road ,for about the same price.

I have used Roys twice...... the second occasion was 9 months after the first and I had hoped the food had improved.... I was wrong! Thankfully lots of salt, vinegar and pepper helped me to eat more than half of the plate. Not a difficult dish to prepare and therefore easy to ruin if the proprietor decides to maximise profits by using the cheapest ingredients and charging the highest price.Anyone who truly believes this Pie & Mash is anything other than poor needs to visit the doctor.

Well, as usual can't fault it, from lovely attentive staff, great service and a speedy hot meal. I messaged the tea room directly from instagram, the message I sent is below . The message was seen by the vendor but I had no response, I did message them again but still no response. Very disappointing Good Morning I attempted to visit your tea room yesterday. You were busy but there was one table left outside with one chair. I seated my elderly mother there as she needed to sit down and I went into the shop to ask if there was another chair available for me to use. Unfortunately I was met by a gentleman server who bluntly said NO… It was hot yesterday and you was busy but I was made to feel very unwelcome … We had to leave and to be honest has left a rather bitter taste. We like to use Local business as they generally have a vested interest in there customer service being tip top but on this occasion it was not the case .

I had the Tandoori Wings to start followed by the Roast Pork which came with all the trimmings. My wife had the Whitebait to start followed by the Roast Lamb (Delicious) Then we finished up with the Cheesecake Dessert to round up perfect Sunday Dinner for two. The best Sunday lunch you can get in the area. Will be going back for more. Highly recommend.

Came to these lakes having been here for lunch a few times. Lakes are stunning and very well kept. I decided to try a day here recently as I had heard it is a nice easy casual lake. I went on a Friday and found a lovely swim. Unfortunately for me a group of kids circa aged 14 all in blue shirts with logos rocked up having been dumped by mummy and daddy and proceeded to plonk themselves between myself and another fella. All I can say is this place clearly does not care about the welfare of the fish. the bailiff came round (a lady) and took the money and drove off. Never checked the size of the net nothing. I had to endure their foul language, watching them yank the fish out no net, no mat no nothing to protect the fish, then they just lobbed them back in the lake. My wife was really upset and went to find the bailiff but she/he was not around. Its clear to me that this place is only interested in money and doesn't care about the welfare of the fish. I am a Carp angler and care deeply about all fish, I make sure I carry all the proper equipment and even bring along the treatments for fish that may have cuts or damage. This is the only lake I have been to where kids are allowed to fish without an adult. Everywhere else I go they have to be at least 16 and if not be with an adult. I would suggest that they bring a rule in for these kids and also put up a sign up about foul language! We wont be going back purely because of these incidents.
