There are limited parking spaces but its very easy to park across the road in Morrisons for a small fee. We have an EV so happy that they also have a charger at Morrisons. We stayed in room 14 which is on the top floor over the main entrance on Fore Street. Nicely appointed room with window banquets and nice bathroom, spotlessly clean thanks to the lovely Sharon. Not a speck of dust anywhere. Great range of teas and Nespresso coffee machine. Nice products in the bathroom. The hair dryer was actually good with enough power which hotels generally get wrong (for women) so big plus for that. Plenty of plugs about the room. Good to have both a bath and standing shower although the latter is a bit small and, like the toilet, tucked in the corner. Understandable perhaps as this is obviously a listed building. The weather was hot so we had to open the windows and use the fan thankfully provided in the room. Expect to hear voices and laughter outside from the hotel bar directly below but they fade around 11pm. But again it's a town centre pub on a busy street so it was to be expected and the location is great to access everything in the town easily. The restaurant staff were all terrific and worked hard and with care. The food is good but mixed quality depending on what you choose. A disappointing salty roasted red pepper soup but the arancini was lovely. Fish and chips generally good, the fish was fresh, but my husband complained that the batter and chips were soggy. Breakfast is very good. Plenty of cereal choices, juice, yoghourt and fresh fruit. I saw bread and a toaster and I think other baked goods. There is a decent range of cooked options including vegetarian and various versions of eggs benedict. The overall feeling was that it was a good stay in a cosy friendly place where the staff mostly cared.

Nothing like the photos or reviews. The room was small with very old carpets and weird smells. The bathrooms are also old and musty. It’s clear that the cleaners don’t actually clean the room. The bed won’t get properly made or sheets changed. We noticed the same hair and marks in the bathroom persisting. Gaining new towels and glasses was hit and miss. The shower was barely large enough to stand in. The lack of ventilation in the room made use of the AC unit necessary to sleep but running it produced a semi-regular noise that meant we needed ear plugs to reduce the annoyance. The walls are paper thin so you can hear neighbours moving and talking very easily. You’re not guaranteed a parking space so will need to wake up in time to move your car to avoid a ticket each day. The reception and bar staff are very friendly but I’m not sure they are aware of how bad the cleaners are or the other issues with the rooms.

We had a 1 night stay at the Royal Seven Stars. It's an old fashioned style hotel/inn in a historic building. Friendly and helpful staff. Our room was pleasant and well equipped, a good selection of teas, coffees etc and a Nespresso machine.   Our room rate only included continental breakfast, with cooked breakfasts being charged extra so it is worth checking at the time of booking, if that is important to you. The continental breakfast was lovely with lots of options. We didn't have dinner there so can't really comment on that.

Love the atmosphere in the ‘Stars’, the staff are friendly & of course it’s so lovely that is it a real ‘dog friendly’ pub ☺️. We were four people having a meal & all of us had a disappointing aspect. The mash was tasteless & a little dry, the fish was surprisingly boney, the steak was tough. One of us had cold chips & the banana blossom ‘fish’ was pretty tasteless too. It needed wrapping in nori & soaking with lemon juice before dipping in the batter. I mean , if you’re going out for a meal and paying for someone to cook something delicious, you want something better than bland. It was disappointing as everything else is sooo good. That was the only negative, it’s a great place otherwise.

When I explained I couldn't have dairy free, and asked if there was dairy in the dish I wanted and if it could be left out, I was directed to the bar code where I was told it's not very specific, so I still needed to ask. We had a Sunday roast here and I can say it was the WORST roast I have ever had. The vegetables were luke warm and soggy at best the turkey was dry and tuff and the gravey was made with pure salt water from the taste. When I said this to the waiter I realised it was a waste of time saying anything. The cost was also high. Will make a point NOT to visit again avoid at all costs.

3 of us had a Sunday roast lunch today. Only one of us required a starter. This arrived after some considerable time and it required no cooking. The 3 main courses were brought to the table covered in gravy which may have been to warm up the dinners, this failed! We suspect they had been left plated up for some time. The roast potatoes were black, the pork ( 2 of us had this option) was a bit dry. Yorkshire pudding soggy due to being completely smothered in gravy. The vegetables served separately, were again, lukewarm but just about palatable. At no time did a member of staff check to see if everything was OK.. so, verdict. we will not return again.

Bathroom could do with some attention to mould, there was a fair bit in and around the shower cubicle, and a lot built up behind the electric shower unit. The food in the pub downstairs was far from fantastic unfortunately. Tough steak and cold, undercooked chips. I think my food had been sitting on the side for a while before being served. Regular patrons, been visiting for 30+ years. Never have we ever been so disappointed with the hospitality. Restaurant was empty but still made to sit at bar. Refused food because we were not sat in the restaurant. Whilst enjoying our drinks in the bar, we watched on as food was served to others (obviously more important than us) in the bar. When we again tried to order food, we were told others had prebooked their table and were therefore allowed food. This made no sense. The waiting staff were so rude. We promptly left and had a lovely meal and cocktails in The Wateride Bistro where the staff were lovely and very accommodating. Would definitely not recommend the seven stars for service (or food).

We had a great two night stay at the Royal Seven Stars. The location is great, bang in the middle of Totnes with buses departing outside and train station a short walk away. Parking was a little tricky but we found space in the car park in Morrisons opposite. We had a dog friendly room and Stan the Whippet loved it - a goody bag and a warm welcome were just the ticket and the complimentary waterproof dog blanket, bowls, ball, treat and dog beer were great additions! A very friendly staff team, big room, good shower and comfy bed - couldn’t have asked for more. The building is really characterful too and goes back to the 17th century. Highly recommend - thanks for a lovely stay.

I wasn't particularly looking forward to dinner at this restaurant last Thursday. Predominantly because it's now a chain and some local hear say of bad experiences. I'd booked online and said it was a birthday, and so we were greeted with a very enthusiastic welcome. The table chosen looked lovely and the best in the restaurant, I'd say, so that was pleasing. We were even more pleased when a little bottle of prosseco arrived pretty much immediately at the table for the birthday girl, such a great touch that made her feel special. The staff continued to be very smiley, chatty, and interactive. My strange requests on the menu were not a problem, and I felt confident they would deliver. The staff had really listened to our choices, and they clicked onto the fact that garlic bread was the birthday girls favourite thing. So much to our delight, the garlic bread came out with candles and 2 members of staff sang happy birthday. Im not sure if this is a regular occurrence, but what I'm trying to emphasise is that the staff read the energy of us as customers and the experience we wanted. A celebratory, happy, jubilant time. I'm sure if you were having a quiet romantic time, they would be just as attentive but in a way that was suitable for the customer and their experience. So thank you to Julie, Lily, Phil and Miles for an enjoyable evening, which has renewed my faith in this chain, and I'll happily be sharing my positive experience with others.

The food is good but inconsistent. I ate a bass in there over the summer, it was spectacular to be honest, completely outside what I expected, and one of the nicest fish dishes I had eaten in a while. Having grown up in totnes and knowing the stars well I was surprised, I went back a week later and since and the quality has been so up and down, we ordered a seafood platter and it was just a let down, soggy batter poor presentation. I will say their fry up is excellent, if expensive, but I believe the quality of the ingredients excuses that. The atmosphere is lovely, especially in the winter when the fires are lit. The service is often slow, which doesn't always bother me, but has on occasions been a bit beyond what I would expect.

We held our wedding reception and weekend at the Seven Stars. We cannot stress enough how incredible Kiren, Darryl and the team were at making our big day special. Nothing was too much effort, and Kiren always treated any challenges with a sense of humour - you are an amazing human and St Austell are lucky to have you! Thank you for all of your help, especially when we were facing challenges with our ceremony venue, and you immediately just brought me a glass of cold white wine to calm me down! You are a legend! The food at the Seven Stars is second to none. I already know the venue well, and that the food is great, we've never had a bad meal here! We ate here with our wedding guests over the course of the weekend, and were blown away with the quality of the food. It's locally sourced where possible, and Darryl makes incredible home made soups and fresh cheesecake! I also had curry and fish and chips, calamari too over the course of the weekend and everything was perfect. Our wedding breakfast was a 3 course meal, everything was beautiful. Canapes extremely filling, and evening buffet was not your standard 'iceland' frozen affair - home made scotch eggs, home made slaw, houmous etc - really top quality. All guests commented on how good it was and how generous the portions were. Breakfast is beautiful - freshly baked croissants, juices and milk in ice, fresh fruits, breads etc, and a great cooked menu including pancakes and the best breakfast bap you'll ever eat! Coffee also always fab. One of the reasons we wanted to have our reception here was the beautiful ballroom which has been modernised with beautiful lighting and glitter ball, which made the evening so sparkly! Staff helped us decorate the venue too which I was not expecting as we booked the venue to do our own decor, and we were so grateful for the help and expertise in setting up the room! In addition to this, the assembly room at the front of the venue upstairs was incredible to get ready in, and bridal party were able to have breakfast privately up here whilst getting ready. There is beautiful natural light at the front of the room. Parking is easily available for the weekend booked in advance over the road at Morrisons very cheaply. It's located close to the river and bridge which is great for photos. The staircase looks very grand as you walk up to the ballroom. Ballroom also has a private terraced area and own bar upstairs. We had Agatha Christie room as our bridal suite which has a jacuzzi bath, stunning four poster bed with tapestry, and seated area by the window to overlook Totnes. There is also another seating area which was very handy to open wedding gifts, and the lovely housekeeping ladies decorated our bed with fresh rose petals which was such a beautiful touch. Thank you, so much! We'll definitely book again to celebrate our anniversaries, enjoy the venue and relieve our day. THANK YOU! We just want to say thank you to St Austell and all of the staff who helped make our wedding day so beautiful. We really can't wait to drop in soon. Kelly & Cian O'Brien

A landmark building in Totnes, the place opens early for coffees etc, licensed hours begin at 11am, 3 ales on the bar. Pub is extremely busy at the height of summer, with seating at a premium.

Had another amazing Sunday lunch cleared our plates! Vegs' were perfect, not soggy or under cooked plenty of meat (we had beef) and an extra pot of gravy! No need for pud, although they look amazing. All staff were really friendly and seemed genuinely happy to see their customers. Another visit will be made next time we are there 😋😊
