Friendly welcome. Lovely quaint pub. This pub is near braithwaite campsite so we tried it yesterday after driving the Newlands Pass, believe me after driving that route you need a drink to steady the nerves haha. The pub had good range of ciders which we both like. Didn't eat but food did look nice. They take card payments too.

This is the umpteenth time I've stayed in the village and The Royal Oak is my go-to pub after an arduous ramble among the fells. It's perfect for walkers with muddy boots and muddy paws. Due to its location, booking is advisable. It's cosier than the other pubs in the village and the staff like Becca are friendly, accommodating and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable and welcome. Good grub and a few good ales.

Stay in the village regularly and always make a point of coming in to the Royal Oak. It's warm after cold day's walking; the food is honest, and the beer is decent. More importantly, it feels like a local away from home, it's wholesome for Leon to remember us and welcome us like regulars to make sure we're comfortable... It's a small thing but makes a big difference.

If you are staying in Braithwaite, nearby Keswick or just walking the Northern Fells, this is undoubtedly the place to eat or refresh yourself after a hard day on the Northern Fells. The staff are all unfailingly polite, there is a wide range of beers and wines to quench your thirst; the menu is both comprehensive (caters for those who have a carnivorous appetite, vegetarians and, albeit limited, also for vegans). All food is prepared and cooked on-site by the chef (Glen) and is truly excellent The bar and waiting staff, particularly Becca, Emmi and Leon, will also make sure that you are welcomed and treated like a local. Highly recommended.

Recently I stayed at the Camping & Caravan Club site at Braithwaite village. This is the local pub. My wife and I went there on the first night for an evening meal. She had the Cumberland sausage with mash and vinegared red cabbage. I had the chili battered calamari followed by Whitby Scampi OMG. This scamp was so large, moist and luscious. They ate way better than the scampi I get to eat in the West Midlands. The food was so good, that we went back the next night. I had the special of hake in in a potato and pistachio crust with carrots and the same red cabbage which is very tasty. My wife had the home made Steak and Ale pie which was also lovely according to my wife. The food is good, the beer is good, the service is good and the atmosphere and surroundings of the pub is good.

We stayed in the village this weekend and booked to eat at the pub on Friday night. It was a good job that we did book because the pub was absolutely packed! After eating there we found out why! The gentleman who served us was fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and drinks options. The food wasnt the cheapest but when it came out it was clear why it wasn't. It was freshly cooked, locally sourced, delicious and great sized portions. I had the Cumberland sausage and swapped the mash to chips. Wow, it was amazing. The burger and the steak and ale pie looked amazing and the others said so too. I would definitely eat there again and would 100% recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.

Popped in to this pub twice. Once as we were starving and it was first one we came across. The second time as we were struggling to find places to eat after two weeks in Keswick. First time. Walked in. Asked staff if any free tables. Just said yeah fund your own. The man behind the bar with the flat cap and tattoos was so miserable it was unbelievable My partner ordered me a plain burger and was explaining what that entailed and he said " I think I know what a plan burger is". How rude. The reason we explain is because the amount of times it comes out and is not plain is unbelievable. Anyway he carried on being miserable to anyone and everyone. Bad day??? We both had burgers and they were really nice. Hot and a real nice taste. I had lemon possett for dessert with amaretto biscuits and cream. It was divine. So tasty. Second time we visited he was in a better mood. I had fish and chips. Partner had burger again and friend had hunters chicken. Again all served hot and tasty You do have to book in evenings for a table Food was nice. Service by the young ladies was really friendly. Would go back.

Can't rate rooms as I didn't stay in the hotel and I didn't sit in the proper "restaurant" section. Popped in on the Thursday for lunch as my partner managed to develop a chest infection and was sat in our flat thingy round the corner not wanting to go out. Five stars as the place was friendly and did exactly what it said - it was an old fashioned pub serving beer and food. Had the steak pie and, while I can't say if it was all made on the premises, it was all freshly cooked and nothing on the full plate was mass produced/frozen. Was it haute cuisine? Nope, it was good, old fashioned pub grub from days before chain pubs and all the meals being delivered so they just need heating. Was it worth £19 - you answer this. If I was at my home town and grabbing a pub lunch I probably wouldn't pay this. If I was in London I'd have to pay this for a badly microwaved catering pie and a few frozen chips. In the lake district this seemed like a fair price to me - I'd been paying £2.50 for tea in a paper cup or £7+ for a bacon roll other places. My only criticism would be the lack of a genuinely local beer on the pumps. Didn't let this affect the rating as they do seem to have made an effort to have a range of drinks (I think three ciders on tap including one berry type monstrosity, couple of lagers, a "modern" IPA, four beer pumps one of which was out so it may have been a local beer that had run dry - there may have been other options). I opted for a Courage as it was the only bitter type beer available. The Jennings was more local but you can get it nationwide and it was a lighter beer - get a bit fed up with them now as everything is pale or golden at the moment. Anyhoo - I liked the place and if it wasn't for the illness we'd have both been in more often.

Food left a lot to be desired and far too many tables are packed in! Looking for food options in the area and thought from the outside the Royal Oak looked promising, however when shown to our seats it felt very crammed in, even though it was not full. Also once the food arrived it was only just above the standard of being edible. The side salad was seemingly prepared days ago as the cucumber and peppers were wrinkled up, the tomato was squishy and the leaves looked wilted. The chips were far too overdone, being chewy and nearly teeth breaking in strength. The rest of the main meal was just about acceptable and was saved by the cheese! Given the price of the food I was expecting a much higher standard. The staff were very friendly and accommodating, but didn't seem to communicate with each other. It may sound like there is a chip on my shoulder, it could be because they were the worst chips I have ever had.

I recently visited The Royal Oak in Braithwaite, Lake District, and was quite disappointed. The food was subpar and lacked flavor. The service was slow and inattentive, despite the restaurant not being particularly busy. It's a real shame to give such a low rating. The pub is beautiful and set in a lovely location. Our waitress was very friendly and so the 2 stars go to her. We waited ages and weren't given a menu. We asked a couple of times and were eventually given some. The service was extremely slow and the food was average at best. The chips tasted like they had been cold and re-heated again as they were so dry and crunchy. For the price we were paying I would have expected alot better. I think the pub works on the premise that there are so many tourists around they don't worry too much about the quality of food. Going for a drink there would be lovely, but I'd steer clear from the food.

The accommodation at The Royal Oak was cozy, comfortable, and thoughtfully decorated, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. The room amenities were top-notch, and I appreciated the attention to detail in ensuring a pleasant stay. Whether relaxing in the well-appointed room or taking in the views from the hotel grounds, I found it to be a perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The staff at The Royal Oak, both in the restaurant and the hotel, were outstanding. Popped in for lunch - delicious hot pot. Staff were very friendly and welcoming for us and our new born. Baby changing facilities even had bags and Nappies provided. Thanks to the staff of Royal Oak, very accommodating and highly recommend. Will definitely visit again. Thanks.

2 January 2024. A nearby restaurant cancelled our booking at the last minute, so at 6pm 11 of us turned up to see if we could have dinner. The staff were immediately receptive and worked fast to get us seated (even though they were already really busy!). We were made to feel really welcome and nothing was too much trouble. We had a lovely dinner and drinks and were served promptly. Thanks to all the staff at Royal Oak. 🥰

Lovely pub near Keswick, had a great selection of drinks and friendly spaces for dogs. While we opted not to bring our dog in, it was nice for the staff to let us know that there was space available in the dog friendly area should we wish to move and bring the dog in.

Typical pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, excellent food and friendly staff. We ate the specials of the day, the Pie was super good. The desserts are also excellent, as are the beer and Irish Coffees at the end of the meal. Highly recommended, they serve food all afternoon!

The woman here need to be re-trained how to make a cooler properly..And how to deal with customers without being immature...today she blended the ice far to much and put far too much cordial in..it was a disaster..like drinking pure cordial juice....i asked her to put more ice in and make it properly and she blended it up again...Second time lucky !! But she ignored me for the rest of the time i was in the shop ! She should grow up ! shes like a child in a womens body ! come on how hard is it to make a slush first time . A child could do its only ice and for £4 .05 p for a small cooler it should be make correctly.

Check before booking here, priority is business over service. My father who is very old made a booking by mistake, we immediately contacted The Royal Oak but were told advanced bookings are non-refundable regardless of the circumstances. We were looking to book once our plans were more firm but will not be booking here due to the poor service and lack of understanding.
