Just enjoyed a crackin New York burger off the menu in the Oak. Very impressed no brioche bun in this establishment thankfully. Really nice burger with home cooked chips and washed down with a pint of Horizon 🍺. My wife enjoyed her choice of Hunters Chicken it's a Def thumbs up from us 👍

Proper pub serving an excellent range of beers and spirits, they do a fantastic pint of Carling! Food is reasonable priced and exceptionally good, the portions are big and there is a wide choice, every Friday is curry night where you can get a great curry for £9 between 5 and 8pm - the staff are always friendly and happy to chat and there are some very interesting regulars, the pub is also supposed to be haunted with several ghosts, I go here regularly and cannot fault the place!

I booked this little gem for my mum's wake and the staff went above and beyond to make it absolutely perfect. The food was reasonably priced at £5 per head and included a gluten free option for my family members with celiacs and a delicious lasagna and chips as well as sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls and all the usual buffet standards and individual cakes. The staff were very friendly and helpful providing a hot drink option for those not consuming alcohol all in all it was the perfect send off!

Easy to miss the Royal Oak,as it’s nestled in the small side streets. Very historic building. Great atmosphere and you can almost feel as your back in the land of the highway man. Usually pop in here for the selection of ales but for me it’s the porter, London Stout. Not eaten here before so had a look at the menu and plumped for steak sandwich and chips. Short wait and it was very nice. Chips are awesome. Staff very friendly. It’s not the biggest of pubs and some residents have been there for quite a while lol. With a visit for a pub with a difference !

We dropped in at lunchtime and had a steak sandwich which was really very good. A lovely well kept pint of real ale and a pot of tea. The tea was in a huge teapot but there was only enough water in there for a cup and a half of tea (cups not mugs) which was a bit of a disappointment. The size of the cups meant one teabag would have easily been enough for 2 cups. Perhaps because I have mine black I got short measures not adding milk to my cup? We will go back again another time though

Had lunch for two - terrible. See pic of the Chicken with salad. Burnt, dry and inedible. Also had a BLT which was equally inedible. Certainly the worst lunch we have ever had - we paid and left leaving the food on the table. On the way out we used the toilets OMG; grim and smelly. We ran for the door feeling decidedly disgusted. Visited alone for lunch and a beer. Ale was excellent, crystal clear and delicious, food was reasonably priced and good quality, staff very friendly. Nice atmosphere, several regulars chatting at the bar. Old time-y pub (oldest in Chesterfield apparently) and could probably do with refurbing, some of the benches were ripped and the toilet floor was uneven and old, but all part of the charm. An ill-mannered unpleasant man insisted on squeezing in next to me because I was in 'his' seat (lots of spare seats avaliable), and threw all his rubbish on my table, staring at me until I left. Took me back to working mens clubs in the 70s. Others may not have apreciated it, all part of the experience for me, and not really the fault of the pub. If you like proper pubs or history it's a very good place to visit, if you're the chain pub/wine bar type it's maybe not for you.

Went to the Royal Oak for lunch on a trip to chesterfield. From the outside the place realy looks the part of a historic pub in a great area of Chesterfield. Situated very close to the market squares it was in a perfect location for a spot of lunch. Inside it has a very traditional pub atmosphere, which although may require updating at some point in the future it gave for quite a cosy vibe. The flagstone floor really completed the picture! There was a great choice of drinks and the small place quickly filled up with plenty of locals which is always a good sign. The cocktail menu was a surprise find but really tasty. For the food I decided to try the mash, which is their signature dish, along with some sausages from the special menu. My partner went for spaghetti Bolognese also from the special menu. The food came quickly and was amazing, the mash was mixed with cheese and chives and the pork and leek sausages were great! Some of the best I've ever had! My girlfriend ended up eating about 1/4 of my meal too as it was so nice. We couldn't manage pudding but it sounded nice all the same and I'm sure based on the quality of the mains it would be great. The meal price was very reasonable at just over £20 for the two lunches, pint and cocktail. We would 100% eat here again.

Popped in for lunch. I really didn't expect much more than the standard pub grub but wow! How wrong could I be! The pub is spotless - tables, chairs, glasses - all gleaming. The barmaid was a very pleasant young lady who gave great service with a smile. A real asset to the pub. I ordered roast duck with vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a still cider to go with it. When the food came it was obvious it had been freshly cooked using fresh ingredients not micro-waved, plastic tasting pap. It was as good as you would expect to be served in a top restaurant but it only cost £8! Absolutely terrific value. I cannot praise this pub enough. If you are in Chesterfield and want a great place to go for lunch, then the Royal Oak is a must. A group of us booked a meal at the Royal Oak, in Chesterfield’s historic Shambles, on Sunday 21 September 2014. Our hosts, Lisa and Kevin, were very welcoming, and made us feel very much at home. On Sundays, the menu consists of Sunday roast, with a choice of four meats – Beef, Pork, Rump of Lamb, or Chicken – plus a vegetarian option, Nut Roast. The food was really excellent – freshly prepared, hot, delicious, and very generous portions – the best Sunday lunch that I have had for a very, very long time! Lots of people in our group commented to me on how good they thought the food was. And the Royal Oak is a fantastic, historic building – just to think of all the people, including various notable people, who will have visited that Inn over the Centuries! We very much enjoyed our visit to the Royal Oak and the excellent meal. In addition to the main course Sunday roast, desserts are available, per the daily menu, but Kevin commented that they do not sell many desserts on Sundays – given the generous main course portions already referred to, I am not at all surprised! We couldn’t manage a dessert, but the icing on the cake, in our case, was – that our hosts gave us a cake! What a lovely gesture – the slice of cake for each of us was very tasty and just right – we couldn’t have eaten any more! And yet more icing on the cake – Sunday lunch at the Royal Oak comes at an amazingly reasonable price! I would certainly endeavour to pop into the Royal Oak for a meal if I am in Chesterfield again – highly recommended.

After reading previous reviews we realised there had been a change of chef after previous problems. These has obviously now been resolved and we enjoyed our visit to The Royal Oak tremendously. Hubby likes shank of lamb and we were assured it was not a boil in the bag effort as with many pubs so ordered the lamb for us both. We were so pleased we had. The large shanks were very tender and the accompanying sauce delicious. Vegetables were al dente and portions generous (I had to give hubby some of my very smooth mash). We had one pudding (Bakewell, of course) with two spoons as we were too full for one each. They also keep a good selection of Real Ales and another couple, also visiting the area, had returned for a meal and were also very impressed. Kev and Lisa, the Managers, were very attentive and friendly and told us about the pub's history. Unfortunately one of the chefs was absent the day we visited so food was late and there'd been a mishap with the Yorkshires but we had the veggie option, and the nut roast slice was really delicious, and it was worth the wait.We would have liked to have tried the weekday menu, as few places have home cooked veggie options, but unfortunately were only in Chesterfield for the day- we'll just have to return!

I'd never been to Chesterfield before yesterday but, as my sister is living there at the moment and mum was staying, my daughter and I went over for the day from Manchester. Just over an hour on the train and well worth a visit. My sister had eaten at the Royal Oak before and rated it highly so we were looking forward to lunch. My daughter had beer battered fish and chips. She's a fussy eater and usually chooses something simple. Rated this as delicious but couldn't finish it (so my sister helped her out!). All the rest of us chose the sea bream with broccoli, creamed leeks (fabulous!) and creamed potatoes, although I was very tempted by the 'pie of the day' - pork and Stilton. There are always a couple of 'specials' on offer and everything was very good value. I think our meal for four, including halves of beer and a coke, came to much less than £40. Everything was delivered by, what appeared to be, a family member. Clearly a very well run and friendly establishment which I, no doubt, will visit again. Chesterfield itself is also worth a day of anyone's time.

Me, my mum and my nan took a day trip to chesterfield as it was somewhere we had never been before and fancied a change of scenery. We had no idea where to eat until we stumbled across this pub. We were warmly welcomed the minute we walked through the doors and the staff were really friendly. The food was amazing!! It came out so well presented and so tasty! My nan had the fish and chips as it is her favourite and she said she had never tasted fish as good! The chips were homemade which you don't get very often and were amazing. Everything is freshly made and you can really tell. Somewhere we would definitely visit again without a doubt.

If it wasn't for trip advisor we would have never seen this place on the map! Food was awesome £9 for a steak - bargain! Gave a sample of beers as sold unique beer and ciders. Moonshine was my favourite.

Lovely old-worldly pub, small, but with a great deal of character. The staff are warm, welcoming and friendly. I have yet to personally sample the food but I overheard extremely positive comments from other customers. I'm definitely looking forward to my next visit!

Really good pub food, well-kept beer and a warm welcome make this one of the best places to have your lunch in Chesterfield. The pies are to die for and the prices extremely reasonable. You are missing out if you do not try this place.

The food here is gorgeous! I was a bit wary the first time we went because I thought of it as more of a 'pub' put, but we fancied a change. I've had the steak, a roast dinner, and a chicken pie, and it was all lovely. Even the chips are delicious. I would advise coming here if you want a nice quiet meal, and don't mind waiting a while for it. Even if you're the only people there you should be prepared to wait, grab a drink and relax.

I wasn't sure what to make of this pub at first. From the outside it's an old, traditional inn in the centre of Chesterfield. On the inside, it offers a welcome to those who just nip in for a drink while shopping, or meals to those of us who are being tourists for the day. It's certainly not a gastro-pub and to be honest, the decor's a bit scruffy looking, but it's friendly and cozy and the landlord and cook definitely know what they're doing.

We discovered this pub/restaurant on one of our regular trips to Chesterfield [ a vibrant market town especially on a friday] It was tucked away down aliitle alley of the market square. What a discovery, it claims that it is the oldest pub in chesterfield dating back to the 19th century. The 2 male bar staff were friendly and helpful. The meals were delicious. My husband chose home made steak and kidney pie and mashed potatoes with a choice of veg. I chose home made chips and 2 fish cakes [ 1 thai prawn cake and another salmon fishcake ] served with a gorgeous side salad. We both agreed that it was the best pub meal we had eaten in ages and we shall certainly return.

Disappointed with the bistro, fist visit but probably the last. I think the food is overpriced ( which is fine if it’s nice ) but the flatbread I had was certainly nothing special, hardly any chicken
