Visited tonight. The couple who owned the pub . Never spoke to us. I thought couple taking over the pub .woul have welcome us . Never spoke . Won't go in again.

Amazing place maintaining much of the original beautiful and absolutely amazed by Amy who was not only serving us alcohol but was incredibly informed about the building and its history, thank you so much

Just reopened after a long time closed down . Chesterfields most historical pub is well worth a visit. Tucked away in the shambles just to the side of the main market square you will find this Tudor building consisting of two separate bars the main bottom one is now brightly coloured and decorated with pub memorabilia .the new owners are friendly and accommodating,a ample choice of cask, keg,cider and real ales are available.the top bar if you have never been in is a total surprise not clues are given away from the glimpse you get across the bar from the bottom bar .entering to top bar you are faced with a full height exposed Tudor roof a most atmospheric atmosphere.the suit of armour is back the last one disappeared with a previous owner .I haven't tried the food yet but it looks good . It's well worth a look and I wish all the best to the current guardians of this wonderful building.

Absolutely fantastic pub, the new owners have done a brilliant job at keeping the character of the pub and bringing it up to date. A wonderful spread of cask ales and great pie options make this the best place in town to spend an evening. Can’t recommend it enough!

Chesterfield's oldest pub is back open! A beautiful building with a rich history. The new landlords, Meg & Patrick, have worked magic on this beloved place. Now a free house, they've curated the best cask line up in town. And they say the casks will keep changing. Can't wait to pop back in to try something new! Piminister pies were excellent. Highly recommend 'The Mothership' option. Prices excellent. Staff brilliant. Ales local.

They have a superb selection of craft beer (potentially, the best in Chesterfield) as well as serving Pieminister pies between. If you are searching for a quality beer (alcohol-free was also a great option) within an authentic setting, then this is the pub for you.

Wonderful pub, great and knowledgeable staff! Went for Curry Night and it was brilliant; a light calorie option, vegan option and a spicy option were what we ordered and all three were absolutely spot on, perfect portion size too. Great Covid-19 prevention measures, all tables wiped down and hand sanitizer provided on the bar!

With it being somewhat historic ie oldest in chesterfield etc tried for first time!..decor fixtures could be better altered for the ancient times very disappointed no historic pictures/ plaques or anything of note! And the ale I had was certainly poor!

After a fab meal previously, we came for seconds. Sadly disappointing. All 4 meals were overcooked. Cheese on burger inedible and fish massively overdone. Not sure what went wrong as food is usually nice. Very long wait too. 😩😩😩 Gutted. not sure what went wrong. Won't go back for now

Had the most amazing spicy pumpkin and lentil stew in this intimate pub that was almost as old as Adam. An amazing building and excellent hosts. Great menu!

Just enjoyed a crackin New York burger off the menu in the Oak. Very impressed no brioche bun in this establishment thankfully. Really nice burger with home cooked chips and washed down with a pint of Horizon 🍺. My wife enjoyed her choice of Hunters Chicken it's a Def thumbs up from us 👍

A decent pub in the shambles. It's the oldest pub in Chesterfield, so while having a meal and pint you can hear the ghost stories.

This little pub is always brilliant, some really good beers on & a friendly atmosphere & attentive staff, always make it on our way to nip into here as well

Great pub and not an ounce of the plague in sight

Proper pub serving an excellent range of beers and spirits, they do a fantastic pint of Carling! Food is reasonable priced and exceptionally good, the portions are big and there is a wide choice, every Friday is curry night where you can get a great curry for £9 between 5 and 8pm - the staff are always friendly and happy to chat and there are some very interesting regulars, the pub is also supposed to be haunted with several ghosts, I go here regularly and cannot fault the place!

A traditional pub with great beer.

I booked this little gem for my mum's wake and the staff went above and beyond to make it absolutely perfect. The food was reasonably priced at £5 per head and included a gluten free option for my family members with celiacs and a delicious lasagna and chips as well as sandwiches, crisps, sausage rolls and all the usual buffet standards and individual cakes. The staff were very friendly and helpful providing a hot drink option for those not consuming alcohol all in all it was the perfect send off!

Excellent medieval inn with history surrounding the Knights Templar, and a decent selection of drinks. Try the London stout, it's very moreish! Relaxed and friendly traditional pub atmosphere.

Easy to miss the Royal Oak,as it’s nestled in the small side streets. Very historic building. Great atmosphere and you can almost feel as your back in the land of the highway man. Usually pop in here for the selection of ales but for me it’s the porter, London Stout. Not eaten here before so had a look at the menu and plumped for steak sandwich and chips. Short wait and it was very nice. Chips are awesome. Staff very friendly. It’s not the biggest of pubs and some residents have been there for quite a while lol. With a visit for a pub with a difference !

We visited Chesterfield for the day and this place looked great and very old. Staff were lovely,polite and pleasant,food arrived quite quickly and tasted amazing. I had the hot steak sandwich with side salad and chips and my husband had scampi, chips and garden peas. Both were delicious and the bread on my sandwich was extremely fresh. Would highly recommend

Brilliant beer in the oldest pub in town top marks

We dropped in at lunchtime and had a steak sandwich which was really very good. A lovely well kept pint of real ale and a pot of tea. The tea was in a huge teapot but there was only enough water in there for a cup and a half of tea (cups not mugs) which was a bit of a disappointment. The size of the cups meant one teabag would have easily been enough for 2 cups. Perhaps because I have mine black I got short measures not adding milk to my cup? We will go back again another time though

Had lunch for two - terrible. See pic of the Chicken with salad. Burnt, dry and inedible. Also had a BLT which was equally inedible. Certainly the worst lunch we have ever had - we paid and left leaving the food on the table. On the way out we used the toilets OMG; grim and smelly. We ran for the door feeling decidedly disgusted. Won’t be back

Pub. That is what I wanted, a pint. Some weird scratchings, may try them one day when I have no further use for my tastebuds for a hour or three.

Visited alone for lunch and a beer. Ale was excellent, crystal clear and delicious, food was reasonably priced and good quality, staff very friendly. Nice atmosphere, several regulars chatting at the bar. Old time-y pub (oldest in Chesterfield apparently) and could probably do with refurbing, some of the benches were ripped and the toilet floor was uneven and old, but all part of the charm. An ill-mannered unpleasant man insisted on squeezing in next to me because I was in 'his' seat (lots of spare seats avaliable), and threw all his rubbish on my table, staring at me until I left. Took me back to working mens clubs in the 70s. Others may not have apreciated it, all part of the experience for me, and not really the fault of the pub. If you like proper pubs or history it's a very good place to visit, if you're the chain pub/wine bar type it's maybe not for you.

Oldest pub in Chesterfield, it's a proper pub, staff were great. Had a pint of Hopback Summer Lightning Pale Ale which was excellent. So good that I went back for another later on.

And they do picked eggs too! Good vfm. Perhaps not quite what it used to be but ok. Will probably return

Went to the Royal Oak for lunch on a trip to chesterfield. From the outside the place realy looks the part of a historic pub in a great area of Chesterfield. Situated very close to the market squares it was in a perfect location for a spot of lunch. Inside it has a very traditional pub atmosphere, which although may require updating at some point in the future it gave for quite a cosy vibe. The flagstone floor really completed the picture! There was a great choice of drinks and the small place quickly filled up with plenty of locals which is always a good sign. The cocktail menu was a surprise find but really tasty. For the food I decided to try the mash, which is their signature dish, along with some sausages from the special menu. My partner went for spaghetti Bolognese also from the special menu. The food came quickly and was amazing, the mash was mixed with cheese and chives and the pork and leek sausages were great! Some of the best I've ever had! My girlfriend ended up eating about 1/4 of my meal too as it was so nice. We couldn't manage pudding but it sounded nice all the same and I'm sure based on the quality of the mains it would be great. The meal price was very reasonable at just over £20 for the two lunches, pint and cocktail. We would 100% eat here again.

Called in after having asked a local for the best pub with chstacter in chesterfield. Thank god he was a local. Pleasant basic bar with excellant choice of drinks. Staff superb friendly tp a fault.asked about food and this was chsen from a vsst menu,with choice for all tastes. My partner had a simple steak sandwich little did dhe know what was to arrive.plenty of chips,salad and the sandwich on thick tasty bread overflowing witj lovely filling. Locals soon started conversation and this with the lovely bar person made us feel wanted,local and appreciated DO NOT MISS

Came to this pub while out shopping and just wanted a quick bite to eat so we both had a sandwich The fish finger sandwich was very nice on chunky bread. my friend had ham and cheese which she said was very nice too only downside was the pub was quite cold but it is the oldest pub in chesterfield and kept a lot of its original features which is nice to see

Visited for lunch which was very good and reasonably priced. All three of us went for sandwiches and chips I had the battered fish finger which was accompanied by mushy peas and it was excellent. Unfortunately I went to the gents and they were not fit to be open to the public. They were awash with a green slime and the thought of eating in the establishment took on a different experience altogether. Will never go back whilst the obvious sewage issues continue. A shame.

called in for a drink, not disappointed! one of the few pubs to have something other than strongbow cider on! Orchard Pig Reveller and very tasty it was too. there is real ale on too, two i believe. hot and cold bar snacks are available. it is one of the oldest buildings in chesterfield and is worth a visit just to see it. we were in the bottom bar, quite informal in here, could be too many tables as felt overcrowded with furniture. will try the top bar next time!

I found myself in here for lunch, good central location and surprisingly quiet. Staff pleasant enough, no music (hurrah!) but without many customers it might seem a bit lacking in atmosphere.
