Food was ok, good sized portions but given that you have to go to rhe bar and order drinks and food, nearly £20 for a main meal seems excessive! It's way too expensive for 'pub food'!

Very well priced proper 'pub grub' lunch menu - pasties, baguettes, jacket spuds, salads, charged as they should be, excellent service, nice range of drinks. If you want to pay £25 for a fish pie a nearby pub can help you out - if you want something more traditional at well under a tenner, go here!!

Quite disappointed with the Sunday lunch, over priced for what you get. Been eating here over the years and this was the first time since covid. Expected more than a yorkshire pudding, some roast potatoes, brocolli, cauliflower cheese and mashed carrot. Bring back the peas and fermented cabbage. Food was cooked well and service was good. Not worth £17 a head.

I simply cannot understand, how I’ve had to wait 2 hours for a starter that could have been made in 10 minutes in the air fryer. The only positive of my trip, was the 1 week new waiter that was running around serving us to the best of his ability. Salty crab, salty lamb, salty chicken. Should have had the curry.

We visited today for a Sunday lunch, it was very busy but we were quickly shown a table. We ordered & paid for our drinks and meals & waited.....& waited. There was no indication from the staff of how long the waiting time was.... However when our meals arrived they were lovely, we decided to order a dessert, but for the price the portions were tiny. If the kitchen can't keep up with the orders coming through then communicate with your front of house staff who can then keep customers informed & maybe explain the waiting time when guests wish to order meals. I would like to commend Alison, this lady was here, there & everywhere, sorting takeaway mix ups, calming waiting guests, serving both food & drinks & clearing tables. The other lady too (sorry didn't get your name) was busy serving drinks & keeping the bar area clean, as for the two young lads we saw.....come on at least smile while delivering food & pick up the pace a little. Being in hospitality myself I know communication is the key to a smooth shift, remember happy staff, happy customers! Thank You, we will be back!!

Happened upon this pub while travelling, serving food all day; simple menu, really nicely served and presented, very tasty. Family friendly, our two littles were very happy and shared an adults jacket potato and beans. Without asking they brought out two little bowls and spoons. High chair was actually good, safe and usable. Pub clean, fresh and a nice place to eat . Big carpark at rear. Also noticed they had pancakes on their menu (lemon and sugar or syrup) for pudding which is a nice simple change from the norm.

Very good place very underrated on Google by people who expected 5 star service from a local pub. By the way the food is very tasty, the place is open all day all week when other restaurants are closed. Here lives welsh soul of Newport people, you can hear Welsh language and taste Welsh food. The staff also is very friendly. We stayed in Newport one week and there was no question to try another place for dinner.

Been calling here for many years- previously the curries were outstanding- in Newport there are no other establishments that offer authentic curries - anycase last night our curry was dry and had that microwave film coated on top - the dhal had the same caked in glaze - however the taste was OK- it lacked fresh and looked poor Too many minutes in the ping ding Plus I had to send my partner to the bar the second time as the server behind the bar had such an attitude - I wouldn't confront her again as I'd snap back - so we are gutted - pointless going back there as the food is poor and one of us has to drive to Fishguard

During our second stay in the Newport area of Pembrokeshire we visited the Royal Oak six times for a hearty meal after a full day exploring the local area. Every time we were given a nice welcome at the bar and enjoyed the excellent customer service from the waiting staff. Our meals were served in a reasonable time and the food was lovely, far better than the generic "pub grub" outlets with more of a home cooked taste to them. Personally we would recommend any of the Sunday lunch options as well as the Curries plus my wife's favourite which is the fish and chips (the fish portion was a very good size and of great quality}. We will be staying in the area again next year and the Royal Oak will be our first choice for dining.

I really like The Royal Oak, it has the feel of a traditional pub that manages to blend eating for (mostly) tourists and a spot for locals to have a pint. Ignore the snidey reviews, the food is decent pub grub, the curries are spicy but tasty and the portions are huge. Good beer, friendly service ( if a bit understaffed) and a pleasant atmosphere. Feels like a proper pub still, a rarity in this gentrified part of the world!

Was in the local area looking at the Burial Chambers. Went into Newport looking for somewhere to eat.( Monday lunchtime) Royal Oak had a board outside "food served all day". Once inside was informed smaller menu, lighter lunch meals. I ordered the whitebait, c/w salad, coleslaw, bread and butter, wife had quiche, c/w salad, chips, coleslaw. Thought not going to be enough for me, so I ordered a side dish of chips. When they brought the food to table I thought that was a mistake ordering the chips. Food was excellent, service was excellent, portions was very big, ( didn't quite eat all the chips) prices was very good, will definitely eat there again if in the area.
