Tain is rather run down just like the hotel, lack of staff made it worse. Pity, it's an old hotel with minor upgrades. Good when we eventually got it was good. Despite complaining about the none working TV due to aerial problems nothing was done about it. Not recommended.

We wanted to love this place, but sadly it is just a bit tired and had poor wifi, even on the first floor. The people were very nice. However, they never could get the TV working in our room. Both the bar and the restaurant were sub par. Lots of potential, but definitely not worth the 180 pounds. We travel tons and this just is not up to snuff compared to the many other places we have stayed in Scotland or elsewhere. Hope they can make progress.

Full of Scottish Character! We had a lovely stay. Staff were very friendly and helpful, they couldn't do enough for you. The Scottish breakfast was the best I've had yet. My husband was working in Tain on a night shift so didn't come down for breakfast and they made him up a packed lunch which was full of options. The rooms are grand and spacious, we had a great nights sleep, very comfortable with all the amenities. Thank you.

During my northbound journey, I required a respite and a robust coffee, prompting a detour from the A9 into Tain. We chose to stop at the Royal Hotel, which displayed signage indicating its availability for breakfast and other services. Upon arrival, we received a warm welcome. The coffee we ordered was excellent, and to our pleasant surprise, we were presented with a generous slice of chocolate cake and a selection of biscuits. The hospitality was outstanding, and the value for the services and refreshments provided was exceptional.

The operators make every effort to keep their guests happy. Well, supposedly the hotel is 300 years old and is located opposite the cemetery which is really worth a visit. The side gate is almost always open.

This hotel has certainly seen more royal times, at least the Victorian look of the interior suggests so. However, a booked superior room surprisingly looks completely different. Wallpaper torn from the wall, armrest of the chair with holes, the wallpaper in the bathroom is peeling off the wall, hygiene in the bathroom leaves something to be desired. The room is so much too expensive. There is only one star for breakfast. With a thorough renovation, more royal times could begin again in this hotel.

Old rustic hotel! Very polite and service-minded staff! They prepared the breakfast as requested Got a very very large room with a fireplace Can be highly recommended if you ignore the fact that it needed a bit of renovation here and there!

A little special hotel, good standard with some odd elements. 500 different whiskeys in the bar.

We’re absolutely grateful for the Hotel’s team who made our 4th Anniversary so special and memorable, we had a wonderful time here. They are very welcoming, professional and very friendly, dogs were treated well too, which we have never experienced before (they were allowed to come to the restaurant with us) and the room we stayed was the Board room, it was the best room we have ever been, and it was amazing how exceptionally clean it was , the breakfast we had (vegetarian), was one of the tastiest we ever had, so overall highly recommended and definitely will return 🥰thank you ❤️🙏

Wow! We would absolutely stay here again, the room was beautiful. Clean. Very atmospheric with a fabulous en-suite. The staff were helpful, and I do not know any way in which this hotel could improve. We are very reluctant to leave!

We had dinner at the Royal Hotel and were disappointed. The food was not fresh, but canned or defrosted. The draft beer and cider have a strange aftertaste, as if the tap had not been cleaned. The interior is run down and no longer attractive. The waiter tried his best, but he couldn't do any magic.

An absolutely beautiful, rustic hotel full of character. The rooms are large and beautifully maintained. Very clean and welcoming. The staff's customer service was excellent. We were made to feel so welcome. A very family orientated hotel. The meals were beautiful, and wonderfully presented. I will definitely come back.

When I got the key to my room I was met with the shock of another guy in there lying on the bed. I laughed it off and went to get another room, the guy on the desk seemed as surprised as I was to hear this but gave me another (posher) room. I entered this one with caution to find that there was no man on my bed but a pigeon in there that had shat on the floor at this point I’d given up and took the room. The room its self had mould on the walls and the pillow had stains on it I would avoid this hotel if possible.

We've been using Royal Hotel Tain for many years now for our Pedal Britain NC500 cycling groups. The feedback from our clients is superb. The team always go out of their way to make the riders stay comfortable and ensure they are fuelled up on Porridge in the mornings. Wether visiting as a group or individually high recommend staying here if your in the area.

The Roya Hotel is a rare pearl. A truly historic hotel, it is 300 years old with a beautiful and central presence in the ancient village of Tain. It is operated by a team of professionals with heart, devotion and commitment to customer comfort. One of my hosts, Jim, sets the best possible standard for hospitality and customer service. Everyone is so friendly and helpful. And the Scoth selection is the best I’ve ever seen. What a delightful stay!

The owner, his family and his staff are simply amazing. My wife and I had a stay over on our way to Wick and the owner personally looked out for us. The owner shared with us his extensive knowledge of Scotch, the area and places to see. He also served us at his amazing hotel bar that has a massive selection of about any Scotch you can dream of. Simply fantastic all around. A big thanks to the Royal Hotel.

Although I arrived very late in the evening, after the hotel reception had closed, there was someone waiting for me and he was very welcoming and assisted me with all my questions and showed me to my room. He took the time to explain things to me so as to rest my mind. The breakfast was very good and the full Scottish was cooked to order and was very tasty. There was plenty of choice of cereals and a continental breakfast. The gentleman on breakfast that day could not do enough for me. It was a very stressful and traumatic day for me but the staff were marvellous and I cannot thank them enough for the kindness and support they gave me through the day. This is my definite place of choice when staying in Tain

Booked a table for 6 o’clock on a Saturday, booking was confirmed everything seemed okay. On Saturday noticed it said they were closed on Saturday so phoned up and were told they were closed.. we had not been informed and our special occasion was ruined as couldn’t get booked in anywhere else on such short notice. Very disappointed.

After reading some of the reviews, I now fully understand the energy here. And after seeing how the owner replies to criticism — it’s clear the truth isn’t always welcome at Coffee Affair. I didn’t write this straight away. I left feeling a bit uneasy, but it wasn’t until I read someone else’s review — someone I actually spoke to in person while there — that I felt I needed to say something. Let me be clear: The man in question did not have a laptop out. I didn’t have one out either. He was being friendly, polite, and simply existing like any normal customer. He was told to put it away, and eventually he did — only to then be asked to leave, for no real reason. We ended up chatting afterwards, and when I saw the review he left — and especially the owner’s reply — I was shocked. The response was not truthful. I was sitting right there. I watched it all unfold. It’s disappointing to see a business not only treat customers poorly, but then double down and rewrite the situation in replies. Responding with honesty and humility would’ve gone further. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who values respect or transparency.
