Rose & Crown in Maldon

Me and my friends came down to Maldon from Colchester for their Halloween quiz on Thursday the 24th of October. We called the day before asking to book a table for 13 of us to let them know there would be a lot of us coming. They said that was fine and we drove down 45 minutes and called on the way to say we would be 5 minutes late. We turned up just to be told that our ‘reserved’ table was taken by other customers that have ordered food so the staff could not move them. The staff were not apologetic at all and would not offer any other arrangements for us to take part in the quiz. We were pretty much turned away from the moment we turned up. We were so upset that we had travelled this far so we had to leave and go someplace else. Would DEFINITELY NOT recommend this place!! Shame on you.

We always buy classic burger meal at a spoons, but this pub, the chips were cold and wearing overcoats. They had no taste. I just had the burger

Nice pub a bit classier than your usual Wetherspoons. Fast service and food good. Clean and staff are welcoming. Will definitely return.

We had the breakfast muffins deal but muffin was cold and muffin was stale. The coffee was not hot. We went for muffin because always used to have plate breakfast but always cold so tried something different but no change. Hungry Horse much better.

Ok so I'm a big fan of Wetherspoon's full stop so this may be a little biased but I've just finished breakfast at the rose and crown in Maldon. Had a lovely eggs Benedict after a delicious porridge with blueberries. They were the freshest, plumpest blueberries and food and coffee was perfect. We also had lunch here yesterday as we are staying nearby. Had a superb all day brunch. This is a beautiful building too. Thank goodness Wetherspoon's has kept these lovely properties alive and as working premises.

Visited on multiple occasions in the past few months since my mother moved to the area. It is a lovely old pub with a nice layout predominantly seating for food at the front and more of a bar layout in the rear. It is run by Wetherspoons so benefits from the range of beers and food menu you get in all Wetherspoons. The food is pretty good and the value is exceptional. The only issue I've had is a young male barman not understanding what a half-pint glass looked like, but it was a minor incident. Been for both a drink and a meal on separate occasions and always a welcoming atmosphere.

Came for a couple of drinks to finish off our evening. A member of staff was extremely rude and snappy at us. She had a horrible attitude all night and was giving us a horrible moody face too only us as far as i saw. She asked us to leave 35 minutes before closing time as she seemed to want all the customers to leave as they had already done last orders. I do not work in hospitality but if i did i would never ask customers to leave nearly 40 minutes before the time they are instructed to close. The bar maids name was stevie from what i heard of one of the other workers talking to her, i did not appreciate her attitude and her customer service. Next time i return i will be asking for another member of staff to serve me.

Very rude member of staff - Stevie Horrible attitude impatient and looked very moody and gave us multiple dirty looks when ordering a drink and smirked when my card got declined (I did pay)

Called in last night as a group of 7 for something to eat and drink before walking along the Christmas market, as you would expect the place was full. We were able to find a table just then went up to the bar and ordered our food. Food all arrived together in a timely fashion with no mistakes and all tasted good. Staff friendly and helpful and clearly were rushed of there feet but still managed to provide a good service. Well worth a visit.

Very disappointed with our experience on Wednesday evening when we popped in for a couple of pre-dinner drinks ,had to queue at the bar for over 10 minutes. Would have left and gone somewhere else but by then we was getting a little short on time. Everywhere we looked was dirty and untidy with. Plates and glasses being left on nearly every table. Only two members of staff behind the bar and only one of them seemed to be serving. Would have left a one star review but I could see how hard the young girl was working hard to serve everyone with a cheery and pleasant attitude.

Love this pub …. Long live Wetherspoon ⚒️ Great prices … smashed the prices of other local pubs ! And still keep fantastic beers !

Called in today for lunch while out in town with my son. Place was busy but we were able to find a table no problem. Went up to the bar and ordered our food and collect our drinks. A short while later our food arrived all correct and tasted good, no issues. Venue was busy but tables were clean and staff friendly, nothing not to like.

Food very hit and miss. Basically you get what your given. Lots of food and beers on menu not available. Asked for chargrilled chicken, got given lemon & herb chicken. When advised staff not what we ordered and wanted to send it back waiter said try it, its nice, just like Nandos, They did take it back to the kitchen in the end, then they re sent out the same lemon & herb chicken but added peas to the plate. Couldn't be bothered to send back a 2nd time and wait any longer so just accepted it. No problem with front off house staff. Waitress offered us complimentary drinks by way of an apology. Weatherspoons in Southend is much better food wise. I know the prices are good, but would rather have what I ordered and can eat rather than what I'm given when paying for a lunch out.

Had to ask 3 times for new cutlery before we could get a clean set. All greasy and covered in old food. Wait staff friendly and helpful. Food was good.

I would like to say that Ellie Weitzel is a very hard worker and very attentive to customers needs she is always on the move never slows down she is a great asset to the company

Called in for lunch today as we were in the high street. Place was nearly full but managed to find a table as there was only 2 of us. Went up to the bar and ordered our food and collected our drinks, plenty of condiments on hand on the side. Food arrived after about 10-15 minutes all correct and tasted nice, staff member popped back just to ask if everything was okay with our meals. We both had a meal and a drink for less than £10 a head so very good value.

Ordered as a family of four, (I will add here, my partner asked if the chicken was breaded the answer was yes), food come out my order was wrong the chicken wasn’t breaded, childrens and partners were fine bit cold but edible. I finally got my dinner after everyone else had finished eating asked if we could speak to the manager he said he was the manager and it was his fault as he put it through wrong, offered a free drink even though I had paid for the refill coffee option, no money back, no offer of a desert just walked off. Will not be going back which is a shame as we are local, isnt the first time order has been wrong with nothing done to make the situation a little better. Considering it was the manager that put it through wrong, and dealt with the complaint you would of expected better customer service!

Good food and good service, can order from the table on the app but it’s easier and less complicated to go to the bar. Tables and interior is a little grubby but for the money it is very good value.

We visited this pub a few times whilst in Maldon. The staff are great and service good. The pub is very clean and they have a nice courtyard area for non smokers. Food was good too.

Go to this pub often and have never had a bad experience. Food has always been great and fantastic value for money. The staff are attentive coming over to check everything is ok. For the price I think it is great value.

Visited on 2 evenings for a meal whilst staying in Maldon. Although I had read some less than ideal reviews my experience was first class. Friendly helpful staff ,timely arrival of food and EXCELLENT value for money. I will never go to Mcdonalds again if there is a Weatherspoons nearby

Stopped off after visiting escape room. We sat in nice little outside non smoking area which was nice, we used the app to order some chips and garlic bread along with some drinks. App worked well and food and drinks brought out quickly, chips were yummy! and enjoyed by everyone. Staff were attentive visited table a few times to check if everything was ok and asked if we needed anything. Nice little stop off if visiting Maldon.

Popped in for lunch while out in the high street, found a table and ordered food and drinks from the app with no issues. All the food arrived together with no issues and all tasted good. Nothing not to like.

We went for a hot drink in the morning and couldn't believe the prices! You simply can't say no to 99p free refills hot drinks including hot chocolate, tea, coffee, latte, capp, mocha etc. Although the drinks live up to their cheap name- £4 for 6 drinks isn't bad at all! When we went, the pub was clean and socially distant.

Ordered and paid for 2 breakfasts at bar. Told the bar person table number 29 (its on a small disc screwed to the table). Sat down and waited for the breakfasts. People that had come in long after us were getting their food and we were still waiting. Went back to the bar to enquire about our order and was told by a young girl there is no order for table 29 and no payment for table 29 showing on the system. If I had paid for the breakfasts it would be on the system. She didn't give a toss and then basically called me a liar. I Checked the banking app on my phone that showed payment had been made. Showed this to another member of staff who after a time messing about on their system found our order had been allocated to table 31. She refunded our money. Poor customer service all round. Will not be going back.

Last night I went into this pub and was absolutely DISGUSTED by the staff who treated 4 young people who came in to order drinks and food. I witnessed that they took ID fm a couple of them and kept them which they aren’t allowed. I personally felt that these poor individuals were extremely ill treated and should be warranted a BIG APOLOGY. from the management. I was supposed to meet quiet a few friends at this pub but actually phoned them to meet else where as I wouldn’t not want my kids or friends to come into a place like this. I was absolutely appalled by one particular woman who treated these 4 people with no respect what so ever. I could obviously see for myself that they were all over 18 and I’ve been in this particular pub quiet a few times and seen a lot younger kids being served alcohol. This particular woman was extremely nasty and had no intelligence or experience in her job, personally I would have sacked her on the spot. I won’t ever be coming back here again !!!! YOU SHOULD BE ABSOLUTELY APPALLED BY YR BEHAVIOUR STAFF !!!

Ordered food and some alcoholic beverages and my sisters boyfriend who was 20 years old didn’t have ID on him. He also looked about 25 with a big beard. He had bought a soft drink and he had 1 sip of my sisters alcoholic beverage. One of the staff saw and took the alcoholic Beverage away from us with no refund. The drink was about 6 pound with NO REFUND!! This lady came over with a very rageful look in her eye to confront us at the table. I asked why about the drink and the lady (very short stocky woman) got very rude and wasn’t nice at all. Makes me not want to come to this place at all ever again. The lady dealing with the situation was very condescending when it came to talking to us. Talking about another member of staff who she stated was 17 smoking tobacco, which she thought defended her point about ID, I do really hope that she isn’t serving alcohol behind the bar, illegal much. Not to mention them taking mine and my sisters ID behind the bar, which is not how staff are meant to deal with the situation. I wanted to buy another drink with valid ID and got rejected even though, the minute we sat down they made continual eye contact with my sisters boyfriend while he was trying to enjoy his food. I felt very intimidated. By law, a 16 year old can have a drink with a meal with any carer/guardian, given that my sisters boyfriend looks obviously older than I am. DO NOT GO, SOME STAFF ARE RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Waited over half hour to place an order because I didn't order by the app that I actually Knew nothing about just ignored at the table so I had to wave to get some attention.No menus on the table so had to wait another 10 mins to be given one.Tables were sticky, table was wobbly so drinks spilling, probably why the table was dirty.Had to ask where the milk and suga was for tea.Overall stressfull will not be going again.Food was hit but just ok.

Since Wetherspoons took over, I've given this place a number of visits for different occasions and been disappointed each time. It's either cold, inedible, doesn't look like the picture I ordered or it's the waiting at the bar for your time only to be completely ignored and watch the staff serve someone they've just seen walk up to the bar! Now it's order by mobile... see ya, I'm done being dictated to by EVERYONE it seems, in this world. My custom is with businesses that need me to walk through their doors with no restrictions on my freedoms of liberty, oh and my God given birth right to walk this planet as a free woman.

Popped in for lunch only to discover that you needed a smartphone to get in and order your table service. Went elsewhere and will never return.

Visited this pub last week and have to say it's ashame as this could be such a great pub.. food here has still not improved and is absolutely the worst pub food I've ever eaten!! Staff and manager do not seem keen at all and manager was even quite rude. Service also very bad waited 20 minutes for a drink after ordering on the app!! And it was a quite week day afternoon. I'm afraid I give up now and won't be coming back. Plenty of decent pubs in town with decent staff.

Went for a full english, within minutes it was at our table, but stone cold! Asked for them to heat it up. 40 mins later still no breakfast. Avoid at all costs. Rubbish service

After a promising start, the system in place gradually got slacker each week.On this week's visit, tables were not cleared and those that were had definitelynot been cleaned in any way.Visitors and dinners were being put at risk.No one was checking on government guidelines.If this is what is acceptable out front it does make you wonder what happens behind the scenes.

Had lunch here while visiting Maldon High Street. As we walked in there was no staff to direct you with what to do. There were menus and forms/pens and bits written on a board. Filled a track and trace form to drop in the box. We found a table that was a little grubby. We then had to download the app to be able to order any drinks or food. I am not used to that so was a bit of a pain. We had the fish and chips and the Empire State burger. Food was very good and excellent value for money. £20 for 2 main courses, 2 pints of ale and a diet coke.

Very nice beef madras, and excellent value with a pint. The kids menu was also very good. Staff friendly and a family atmosphere. I can’t believe you can buy a pint in there for £1.69. Supermarket prices in a pub. Would definitely recommend

Visited this pub again recently and the food was worse than ever!! Staff seem clueless on how to run a pub.. they to get rid of the incompetent manager and start again.. other than that a decent pub

Looks like Tim just took over a local pub, unlike the majority which seem to have been fairly grand public buildings in the past. Never mind its all good quality at a price that's just too affordable!

Visited for quick coffee during the day and not busy so easy to social distance, went back in the evening to be totally shocked at the lack of social distancing from lots of what appeared to be underage drinkers who had NO concept of social distancing at all, using our table as a shortcut to go and join other people at the other side of the pub, it seemed to be understaffed and the staff there were very busy to had no opportunity to police this situation. I felt VERY vulnerable and unsafe to the point of leaving my drink as soon as I had finished eating. It spoiled what should have been a relaxing meal out. I will NOT be returning unless something is done to improve the situation. It appears that obviously COVID has missed this pub and life goes on as it always had.. SHOCKING!!!

Went with partner for a nice quite meal and drink. Quite it certainly was! Waited over 20 minutes for drinks after using app. As for the food, all I can say is call yourself a chef, my 10 year old granddaughter can cook much better!! Gordon Ramsey would have shut the place down, as it was definitely a kitchen nightmare!!!! Do not eat at this pub. Try the White Horse instead!!!!!

Visited this pub on a quite Monday afternoon, decided to order drinks using the app. After ordering we waited nearly 15 mins and in the end went to the bar to complain and collect the drinks. Also ate here too although I must say the food arrived quickly and with a smile. Found the food to be very poorly cooked the chips were not very nice and we didn't enjoy our meals at all. So over all I certainly wouldn't recommend eating in this establishment.

Good service on a very busy lunchtime. Food arrived quickly, hot and well presented. Good tasty pub grub and a good choice of beers etc. Will be back.

Popped in for a drink while out with mates last night.Venue was very busy as you would expect as it was a Friday night. Service was good considering how busy they were. As always a good selection of drinks on offer at a very good price, even managed to get a seat after about 10 minutes so all in very good.

Take the Mind your Head notices seriously if you're tall.They were out of fish at lunchtime when we went.... I ask you! That on top of the rabid views of Wetherspoons boss! But staff very efficient and helpful.If you refill your own coffee put the cup under the spout in the centre But if you just want boiling water to make tea with a tea bag it comes out of a spout left of centre and completely misses your cup. You have to wait for it to finish and then do take 2

i ordered two steaks , one with chips and the other with a jacket potato -- getting the drinks was an ordeal and took two people to execute the order,the meals arrived , my meal was ok the other had a cold jacket potato , so that was returned and i proceded to eat my meal.some time later after i had just finished my meal , the other meal arrived looking scorched and dry with a hot jacket potato - the meal was ruined and rather than give the chef a third try at getting it right , the meal was returned and we accepted the suggestion of a refund and talk to the manager.five minutes later i was given £7.45 and was informed that the manager will be available after his break -- needless to say we left without waiting for the manager.

I realise that the beer is very cheap in Wetherspoons that I personally would rather they put a little bit on the beer and train their bar staff in some common manners. You can wait 1/5 minutes while they muck around having a chat and then when they eventually do serve you it's like they are doing you a favour never an apology for the waiting time.Used to love coming here especially for the weekend breakfasts but now we just don't bother

99% of the time I’ve had good food here. But dont order eggs Benedict here. It was freezing cold so sent it back and second service was also cold. Toasted English muffin should be warm and so should the poached eggs. Very disappointed tbh.

a large comfortable pub that probably has not been modernised for 100 years . we took advantage of the "steak day special" which apart from the exceptional value , generous portions ,excellent quality also included was a free drink of wine,beer or non-alcoholic.for those not wishing to have one of the daily specials , there is a large menu to choose from.

At a Spoons you know what you are likely to receive as long as it runs well and the Rose and Crown deliver everything that's good about the pub chain.The service was warm and friendly, the fare excellent value for money and it was served up in very good time. The table was clean and tidy and as one set of customers left, their table was cleared and wiped down.

Lovely food and drinks enjoyed by the whole family for an amazingly cheap price. I ate so much I could not move !! Good service at the bar, clean and lovely toilets too 😊

Arrived just after noon and found a corner table looking out onto the High Street. Service at the bar was not the swiftest but adequate. Good pint of ale at £1.79 so no complaints on that score. I had the All Day Brunch which was satisfactory. My companion had the Brie / Chicken chill jam burger. This looked rather anaemic and there was no sign of the chill jam. Could have got a cheaper deal If we had looked at the menu closer but this wasn't pointed out to us.

Went in on Saturday night with my family for something to eat. Managed to find a table despite the place being very busy.

We been here before but never been this bad. Table filthy, asked a member of staff to clean it but they never did! This pub should not serve food. Over a hour wait A absolute disgrace.

Use this place when we meet up with family usually ok .? But on this occasion I was really disappointed !!! Very small portions 12 chips ! Not sure if I will attend ! Sticky table to no menus on table !

This establishment maintains the usual high standards that we have come to associate with Wetherspoons. Very reasonable prices and pleasant staff.

We called in for lunchtime drinks and a light bite to eat. This is quite a large pub: it was half empty. Only one person was serving behind the bar. There were dirty plates piled on tables everywhere inside and out. We waited for 7 mins to get served but were ignored. We walked out and went elsewhere. There are some consistently good Wetherspoons around but this is probably the worst I've been in - avoid!

My daughter and I decided to visit our local Weatherspoons this evening. I chose a vegetable lasagne and my daughter decided upon a burger. Both arrived within the expected timeframe and the meals were delicious.

We really enjoyed our meal in this Wetherspoons restaurant in Maldon. The service was excellent, the tables clean and the food was hot and tasty. We found those that served us to be friendly and conscientious. Thoroughly recommended.

Rarely come here after earlier disappointing visits, how ever we needed somewhere to eat and Thursday nights are curry nights. Well, the bar experience was same old, young staff behind the bar seemingly more interested in chats with their colleagues rather than the queue of waiting patrons. Eventually served, told a 45 minute wait for food - and we ordered curries !! You would think they would anticipate the demand and staff accordingly. When the food arrived, wasn’t great, the rice and nan were average and bulked up a smallish portion.

Was here for lunch. Had to wiat over a hour for food and had to put more money in car park then it was awful... Very bad service today.

Terrible, avoid at all costs. I have been coming to this Wetherspoons for a few years now. Over the last 2 visits I can only describe the experience as awful. I came here Saturday to meet my daughter and her partner with my husband. Firstly the tables were literally stacked high with plates, rubbish everywhere (obviously pigs that were sitting there before). Drink all over the menus and the table. We had to sit here as there were no other tables. the table next to us also complained about the state of the table. We politely asked a waiter to clean our tables before we ordered. Half hour later I had to approach the waiter again to ask him to do it. There is clearly no system for clearing tables when people have left.

I think everybody agrees you get value at Wetherspoon pubs it’s the little things that annoy, we called in just for a coffee (or two) great value, but we noted tables not being cleared, especially outside on a glorious sunny Wednesday, in fairness it was quite busy inside and maybe there was a rush on with food etc

After waiting 30 minutes for two breakfast to be delivered on a Sunday morning ,I asked two different members of staff both could barely look at me and granted in my direction even when we pointed out the people who came in after us had been served will not be using this Wetherspoons for some time now and finally had enough
