Tony and Jack arranged my Aunt's wake. We couldn't have asked for more. From initial enquiry right though to the end of the day nothing was too much. Catered for all dietary requests and the food was first class and plentiful. Thank you from all the family

A real 'Proper Pub'! We often end up here after a dog walk. There are some great walks around Halstead and this pub is a fantastic place to finish. A great selection of well kept beers and who can beat an accompanying packet of scampi fries?! Thanks - we'll be back again soon. (Such a shame Robbie had to close his shop - we miss buying his lovely eggs on our visit).

On a quite miserable walk from Shoreham weather wise, some comfort was needed. Came across this pub by chance and how delighted we were to find such a welcoming from management and locals. Ales pulled at their very best with a good choice of food and sandwiches to accompany. I can only give 10 out of 10 for this pub as I would need to travel 25 miles to visit and taste the sandwich's and beer again . Will do thou for sure. Best to all in 2023

Handled a pre-booked small after funeral wake party in the most caring and friendly way even allowing the organiser to provide own food. Excellent range of cask ales was most appropriate for the afternoon. Very accommodating, caring and friendly venue.

If you’re looking for a friendly, welcoming place to have a tasty, generous lunch from a wide menu, then you can’t go wrong if you choose the Rose and Crown. Our other lunch venue didn’t work out as planned and we decided to dash to this pub instead... and we’re very glad we did. Some things happen for reasons! I never write reviews but feel that as we had such a lovely lunch here, I really ought to write this recommendation. Thank you!

We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. Also value for money. The waitress explained everything before we ordered. Our only complaint was lack of car parking. But would visit again

We've been going to the Rose and Crown for over 6 years now and the service and food are great. They have a great kids menu too! The garden is great for the kids to run around in.

Called in here as part of a walk in the area. The pub is, quite rightly, listed in the CAMRA good beer guide and has been for many years. It serves 6 very well kept real ales, we tried the Mighty Oak, 3 piers and cellarhead beers all were excellently kept. The establishment also serves very reasonably priced food including sandwiches and main dishes. The serving staff were attentive and friendly. All that you can ask for in a pub.

I revisited this establishment this year on a Sunny Sunday Afternoon. It happened to have entertainment in the garden on this particular Sunday ( An excellent Duo).Burgers or Hot Dogs were on offer with help yourself sides. Both very tasty & good value.Attentive Landlord & Staff were once again all a credit to this lovely Pub. I just wish I lived nearer!!

My sister and I are natives of Halstead - indeed she still lives there and frequents this pub. My father used to frequent this pub for many years, in preference to the one just down the road. On the walls there are many interesting photographs of many of the village's sporting teams and primary school pupils - I am in one such photograph at the age of 7.I took my sister to this pub for lunch. We sat outside in a well shaded spot. There was a good selection of food on offer and we chose the ploughman's - her's with sausages, and mine with cheese. Alas they got my request for no lettuce mixed up with my sister's meal but this we rectified by simply swapping the sausage and cheese. Evidently the sausages were non-plastic and very tasty (but I'll bet not as good as Bert Baker's, the village butcher of long, long ago) as was the mature Cheddar cheese. There was an incredible variety of pickles and salad. The whole meals were excellent value for money. A shame my second requested glass of water was not delivered to the table.

Today I had another visit to this wonderful pub. We got there as it opened and by the time we finished our meal it was full of repeat customers. This is testament to the great food and hospitality. Elaine as usual welcomed us as old friends. This time we both had the Rose and Crown burger. A huge burger with real chips, onion rings, mushrooms and a side salad. I had intended to take a picture of my meal but it looked so appetising I completely forgot. Everything is freshly cooked and very reasonably priced. Although the eating area is quite small it does give a great atmosphere. In better weather there is the garden where you can eat in pretty surroundings. Well worth a visit.

Started making visits to this pub to eat and have always found it the most friendly place with very welcoming staff especially the landlady. Nothing is too much trouble here. The menu is standard choices for a pub but absolutely amazing value and very well cooked and presented. Fairly small inside but it also boasts a fantastic garden with plenty of seating.

I wanted to say a hidden gem but somebody got there first. This is a true village pub of the kind which are sadly disappearing fast. We went here for a mother's day meal and it was a delight. The food was excellent - nothing fancy, just good pub grub but what really stood out was the excellent service which was friendly and efficient. Will definitely return before too long.

Came here with the whole family and I think overall the landlady made it for me. She's a proper Peggy Mitchel (but better looking and less cockney) and really made us feel welcome. Food was nice, nothing out of the ordinary but pleasant.

Sunday roast (£9.50) was as good as ever - proper meat hand carved with roast potatoes and all the trimmings. Normal menu available as well and if you visit during the week the lunchtime over 50 menu is great value but with somewhat limited choice.

While out for a walk my wife suggested we eat out and as I know the area I suggested the Rose & Crown. We had not booked but although they can get busy we were able to order food. There is a good choice and the food was cooked well and portions were very generous even on the over 50's fixed price menu. The stilton and broccoli soup and the beef and beer pie left little room for desert but we both managed it just! There is always a good selection of ales which change on a regular basis and this visit proved no exception. If you want a good filling meal, the chance to try some good beer and get good value for money this pub is hard to beat.

I like this Pub so much that I visited three times in one week! Ist visit to try the beer ( it was perfick). 2nd visit to try the over 50s menu ( large portions by my standards of great grub & superb value). 3rd visit for a Roast Sunday Lunch with the Wife, who also raved about it! On all three visits the Staff & Landlord were so welcoming & helpful I didn't believe that some were employees rather than being the owners !!

This is a great pub tucked away on Otford lane in the Village of Halstead, Kent. The pub is attractive from the outside with a traditional flint façade. Inside, there are two bars. The front bar is popular with locals, with a dart board, TV etc. The side bar to the right is more cosy and suitable for casual dining (there is also nice dedicated barn for group dining or small events). The landlord and staff are always friendly and welcoming. The food is classic pub grub, well presented, consistently good and at a great price. The pub is CAMRA rated and there is always a selection of six really good real ales to choose from, and these change regularly. To the rear you've got a roomy secluded beer garden if the weather is fair. Our favourite place to go for a drink and a chat with friends. Very good.

Popped in for two cappuccinos and they were great. Good waitress service and extremely clean café. Although we didn't have anything to eat, the cooked breakfasts looked really appetising. The café is tucked away off a side street. Hope to go back for those lovely looking breakfasts (yum yum). Well done ladies for the lovely friendly service with a smile.
