This was our second visit. The first, between Christmas and New Year, was perfect. Wonderful food, great staff and super atmosphere. It was pretty crowded then. As a result we decided to take our daughter and her fiancé for their birthday meal as a special treat - it’s an hour away from where we live, but we felt it was worth it to get a really special occasion. It wasn’t. Although it was no more crowded than before, we were put in the main bar (we had our dog) so constantly had a queue behind us. People were calling to each other over our heads and the serving staff had trouble getting to us because of people waiting to be served at the bar. There were also lots and lots of flies. The food was fantastic but the atmosphere was not. We had booked many months before to get a place but it seems not early enough to be able to secure a decent location to eat. It was a very disappointing experience on a day that was supposed to be special. We won’t be back. Our advice is to avoid this restaurant on a Saturday, especially if you have a dog. We felt very sorry for the servers so gave an additional tip (on top of the automatic service charge) because they had a pretty hard time getting to us. Our table in the bar rather than the rather nice side room where we’d been before (also with our dog) was simply not fit for a place like this and certainly not a good place to serve food of this quality.

Truly excellent. As a party of 12, we pre booked for a midweek dinner. The place itself is beautiful, warm, welcoming and dog friendly. A varied menu, catering to all tastes and vegetarians. Locally sourced produce and excellent food. Great service and very friendly staff.

I love coming to this place and booked a table have to have a family meal. Sat down in a near empty room but so close to the next table that I had to sit at the side of the table. First thing first the waiter asked do you want any drinks, as I only drink bottled beer I asked what do you have? We only have non alcoholic bottles of beer!!! No thinks I will drink water!!!! A restaurant with no bottles of beer !!!

We were staying in Durham and the restaurant we had booked cancelled due to the threat of riots, so we decided to look further afield. We found two restaurants - one was The Bay Horse in Hurworth-on-Tees and the second one this restaurant. On Tuesday we went to The Bay Horse and were blown away by the food and service etc and on Thursday we were expecting the same. Unfortunately, it didn’t quite work out that way. The atmosphere was less friendly, but the menu looked promising. I had the roasted tomato soup, sour cream, Parmesan croutons, tarragon oil, which was delicious. So far, so good. I had wanted the venison and beef pie, but that was sold out, so I opted for the treacle marinated pork chop, creamed spinach, anise carrot, triple cooked chips and charcuterie sauce. This looked lovely, but sadly did not deliver on taste. The carrot was the star of the dish - the pork had barely any flavour and was chewy and the spinach was barely seasoned. I had high hopes for the sauce, but it was watery and tasteless. I was so disappointed and nearly didn’t order a desert, but having looked at the menu I was tempted by the rum and coconut posset, pineapple gel, brown sugar roasted pineapple and lime sorbet. The posset was like rubber, not light and creamy as I was expecting. It had no flavour at all and there were large lumps of hard sugar mixed in with what looked like cut up pieces of pineapple rings, a little bit brown. I sent it back and it was taken off the bill. I had overhead another couple asking for a cappuccino, only to be told that they only served filter coffee, so didn’t stay for coffee. I don’t think it helped that the chef had a friend in and was busy cooking him and his partner taster courses and kept popping out to see what they thought. So maybe he was just bit preoccupied and forgot to season the food! If you don’t want to be disappointed onto the Bay Horse! I wish we had gone back on the Wednesday instead….

Smart, tastefully and fairly luxuriously done up bar, dining room and downstairs (we didn't stay.) We had pints (very good,) and lunch. Lunch was just small to medium sarnies with a bit of salad, and a little expensive, but *very* good, so well worth it. The staff are very nice, helpful and friendly. Interesting photos and handsome prints everywhere, and comfortable rooms downstairs. Guests get their brek in a beautiful, pannelled dining room.

The Rose & Crown is a very lovely place to be! Both restaurant & bar are cosy, quaint & romantic, the latter boasting an open fire. And the village of Romaldkirk is totally, quintessentially English chocolate box. The welcome was typically Northern (warm & genuine) & service attentive & chatty. Starters & mains were excellent, but puds, sadly disappointing, hence the 4/5. This wouldn’t stop us returning or recommending though.

Quality meal in a something special environment. We were lucky to eat in the lovely old dining room and the food came up to expectation. We had beautifully tender & tasty pork & lamb which we understand was locally sourced as indeed all ingredients. Yorkshire puds crispy, gravy spot on and the cauliflower cheese was delicious as were all veg. We just managed share a luscious sweet which melted in your mouth - top marks. It may be a little more expensive but worth it . Lovely village surrounded by beautiful countryside.

This was our first visit to this beautifully located country pub to meet friends that have frequented many times. A warm welcome on a cold day was nice with friendly members of staff looking after us. The menu was varied with light bites, main meals and nibbles all on offer. Order of the day was the burger with salad and triple cooked chips that were delicious and a sausage light bite too. All the food was amazing and the pub, although quiet when we arrived was quite busy. Loved the whole experience and would revisit if going past that way.

We had a fantastic meal in the Bar on Friday evening. The five of us all chose different meals and were all singing the praises of the kitchen staff. The two course meal with beers and a bottle of wine including tip came to under £50 per head. For such a mouth watering meal in a warm relaxing atmosphere it was well worth it. I highly recommend a visit.

The food was outstanding - great flavour combinations, perfectly cooked meat and beautiful presentation. The service was friendly and prompt with small touches like tap water ready on the table and fresh bread and butter (really delicious bread and butter at that) before the starters that just take it up a level. The food isn't cheap (around £9 for a starter or desert and £20-25 for a main) but we felt the quality warranted the price. Overall, we had a lovely evening and would definitely go back/recommend it. We were advised to book in advance and would endorse this suggestion as it was very popular so you seem unlikely to be able to get a table as a walk in.

This is a gorgeous country pub with a mouthwatering menu and my whole group were excited to try it for lunch. The food is locally sourced and was nicely cooked. On the face of it this was somewhere I would normally be keen to visit again however the service was so poor, not only would I never eat there again, I feel compelled to leave a negative review. The service wasn't slow or inefficient and no mistakes were made with our order but the waitress was surly and downright unpleasant. We were spending over £140 for a main course and a drink and we were made to feel incredibly uncomfortable. I would guess that the server may have been experiencing some sort of personal crisis that rendered her incapable of speaking civilly or raising a smile, however the barmaid was almost as miserable. We couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Visited for Sunday Lunch with friends. Setting and dining room were very nice. Food was ok but expensive. £9 for a bowl of soup is excessive. Sunday lunch mains range from £18-20, again quite expensive considering the cost of vegetables. I had the pork, which was very dry. Friends had beef, which they thought was tough. Decided to have pud at home, as again £9 for a brownie or sticky toffee pud seems excessive. Liked the setting but think they are overcharging for the food.

Delightful old world atmosphere, excellent food and service. We celebrated my wife's birthday there and she loved it. Romaldkirk is a small unspoiled village with spaceous village greens and many beutiful mature trees. The Rose and Crown overlooks the village green, well set back from the not particularly busy main road. My only criticism is that despite the lovely summer's evening, the curtains covered a good half of the windows, so the dining room seemed quite gloomy. Even the not very bright wall lights did not dispel the gloom. My enquiry as to whether the curtains could be adjusted to let in more light was met with "That's how the boss likes them". Consequently I has to read the rather faint light gray print on the menu by the light on my phone. Wouid have given 5 stars had it not been for this.

This place never disappoints and once again I'm left looking forward to my next visit. Getting to The Rose and Crown is a bit of a trek for me but it's well worth it. It's been a while since my last visit, mainly due to the dreaded COVID and I had tried a couple of time to book a table in advance but found that slots were being snapped up rather quickly. I suppose I could have just turned up but I'd rather have the peace of mind knowing I had a table than risk chancing it. With all that is going on right now, and who knows what is around the corner, I could think of nowhere better to while away a couple hours and sample some fantastic fayre, great service and top notch Black Sheep. Myself and my wife booked a break in Mickleton in July, so were disappointed to find that the Rose and Crown was not opening till August. We were however returning with family in September, so 3 weeks before arrival i went online to book to find no availability. I contacted the pub and they said they could accomodate us in the bar on a particular night. We were pleased on arriving to find we were in exactly the same spot we had sat in on our visit 4 years earlier. Food was excellent. By the time we ordered desert the rain came and very kindly they allowed us to sit in the residents lounge . The staff could not have been more apologetic and we did not pay a penny for our meal ! I am writing this review really to say that the staff could not have been kinder to the point that we felt guilty for not paying for a lovely meal ( disappointing not to allow our son the chance of enjoying the beautiful interior for his birthday lunch) but also to suggest that people always confirm bookings directly with restaurants to avoid these mistakes which the rose and crown admits do happen.

I knew we were going to enjoy our lunch as soon as we entered the calm, ordered bar and saw a table with a small blackboard and "Reserved Kirkwood" on it. This is a wonderfully efficient old English pub and with excellent food and service, all of which makes it well worth its reputation. The Sunday lunch menu was essentially roasts. The cauliflower cheese and giant, light, Yorkshire puddings were particularly good. (Could perhaps have done with a tad more beef, though.) The lemon posset with orange sorbet and raspberries dessert was superb too. Two courses cost £21.Our mains came within 10 mins of ordering and we were back on our walk within the hour. By the way, the pub is fine for walkers. Yes: it is posh but not so posh that you'd feel out of place in outdoor gear. (We walked from Cotherstone then, after lunch, continued over the bridge at Egglestone and back on the far side of the Tees. Highly recommended.)You definitely need to book. The chef, Dave Hunter, discussed with me beforehand what sort of food I liked and went into great detail (he did however also give us the option to leave it to him) and he then came up with a menu that really suited me and my guests. He had listened to everything I had said and designed it around that. The food was outstanding with every course a taste sensation. He really put his all into it and when he came through to explain each course his love for his food just shone through. The staff were attentive and friendly and even though we were a table of ten nothing was too much trouble. Amazing amazing night. A slice of bread and butter would have been nice. Simpsons Beef was just mouth wateringly delicious. Red in the middle and just fell apart in the mouth.Yorkshire Puddings just like mother used to make and cauliflower cheese and seasonal vegetables cooked to perfection. And the carrot - not just a carrot but sensationally cooked . The folk on the next table chose the cold meats as starters and they were well pleased. The Puddings looked tempting but they were beyond our stomach capacities even one pudding and two spoons.

The website of the Rose and Crown promises "a warm welcome". However, when we checked in for a one night stay, the young man at reception was not particularly "warm" or "welcoming" and, pointedly, did not offer to help us with our luggage, even though we are no longer young. He indicated the steep and narrow staircase and left us to get on with it.Our room overlooking the village street was large, clean and comfortable. The bathroom was small, but cleverly designed to make the most of the available space and generous amounts of good quality toiletries were supplied. However, after our long drive, we would have liked to make ourselves some tea, but there were no such facilities in the room. A note in the information folder informed us that we could phone down for a tray, but we didn’t want to put that young man to any trouble, so we did without. In the circumstances, the convenience of making our own hot drinks would have been most welcome. That evening we enjoyed our dinner in the beautiful oak panelled dining room. The place was busy, but service was efficient and polite. The portions were generous; my starter of smoked salmon with a smoked salmon mousse was heaped up on the plate and so large it was more of a main course than a starter. Smoked salmon is quite rich and, as a starter, half the amount would have been plenty, but that's just my personal opinion. After a good night’s sleep our breakfast next morning was excellent, my partner in particular thoroughly enjoyed the haddock omelette with Cotherstone cheese sauce. On the whole, this turned out to be a pleasant place to stay, despite the initial off-hand “welcome”.

We booked the Rose and Crown in Romaldkirk a couple of Sundays ago while we were visiting in the area. Lovely atmosphere in the restaurant bar, table was already set and reserved for us when we arrived, the staff were very helpful and responded to requests from customers. Choice of Sunday roasts, we both went for the Teesdale lamb, local to the area, huge crisp Yorkshire puddings with all roasts, little pan of gravy which kept hot, together with mixed vegetables and my husband was amazed at the delicious cauliflower cheese. After this lunch wasn't sure we could manage pudding but couldn't resist the sticky toffee pudding with sauce and ice cream - to die for! We will definitely be visiting here again, hopefully over a couple of days, walking routes in the foyer for us to try, and sample the evening meal menu.

Visited here several times and had an enjoyable pint so decided to have Dinner. We were advised to book, which we did. The food is well above average for a pub, but the price does reflect this. Rather off putting (for me) is the sign that says 'No Muddy Boots Beyond This Point' as you enter the pub, which is in the middle of a walking area. However, it is a hotel and not all guests are walkers. Staff are very well presented in waistcoats and ties, which I haven't seen in many a year! I would advise booking for food and it is not the cheapest pub in the area but our food was excellent and worth the cost.

Sunday Lunch very disappointing and very expensive £17 for main course only and food not that great. Service was ok but booked for a family of 12 and were squashed into one corner as if we were unwelcome

While visiting the UK, we drove 45 minutes for dinner, after being recommended this restaurant. The staff was brusque and seemed in a rush. I ordered the lamb chop, which arrived very quickly, and had no meat, only fat. The kale wasn’t cooked. When I mentioned this to the server, she said she would tell the chef. No apology or attempt to correct the situation. Then we were ignored for quite a while until we had to go to the bar and ask for our check. Again, rude, cold service. No apology of any kind or offer of a discount. A complete waste of time and money.

Visiting in the area and went for Sunday lunch having been here before. Bar is cozy and a good atmosphere. A good buzz about the place. Serving staff efficient and attentive. Food was good, prepared in good time and good portions. Would go again.

Disgustingly overpriced , got charged £3.20 for 2 small orange & sodas , most expensive in the area , was going to be £4 until we questioned it, and then waited nearly 20 mins to use the toilet ( only one loo bty) had to come away and go back again , we will not be back !

The food was delicious, and a cut above many pubs. It is expensive, though - £18 for a main and £8 for starter or dessert. There is a children’s menu but no option for children’s desserts - we felt that £8 for a dessert for a young child (the same cost as their main course!) is unreasonable- maybe offer ice cream on the kids menu and increase the price to a tenner? We very much enjoyed our mains but be aware that vegetables are generally a side order - what it says is what you get. If you want veg too you will be spending over £20 for the main course alone.

We had a superb lunch in the traditional restaurant with it's original, period interior. The food was mouthwatering and service superb. If in Teesdale, don't pass The Rose And Crown by. The soup of the day didn't sound delicious, but it certainly was. We all love the main course but too full to manage one of the appealing deserts.

Struggling to find a restaurant open on a Sunday evening (while staying in Barnard Castle) we found the Rose and Crown. Quite dark and candle-lit inside. Hated the over-loud background music: Adele! Yuck! Starters and puds a bit pricey, but mains reasonable and warm bread comes f.o.c. I had a very nice prawn cocktail, followed by a reasonable 'Barnsley Chop', which came with veg and chips (why not boilded spuds?) and plenty of gravey! The £8 special pud of the day (brownie) didn't seem that special, plus the icecream was nothing to be amaised by. All in all: good but not brilliant.

Thought we would give this place a try as we have almost exhausted every eating establishment in and around Middleton-in-Teesdale, my partner had the fish platter for main and I have steak and chunky chips , both of which were above average , steak was cooked to perfection (rare) for me which I usually find it’s more medium, it this was top notch , well presented with a small pan gravy which was a nice touch , chips were proper home made chips not shop bought , the platter was very good but maybe more of a selection of fish or a fish cake as loads of smoked salmon, service was brilliant, definitely would return for a 3 course meal as we unable to this time , over all a great place and in the summer this place would be amazing as it’s off the beaten track

Finding myself both hungry and nearby I returned to the Rose and Crown knowing that it is always busy and not always able to accommodate every spontaneous arrival. However I was lucky, and enjoyed the very large fish platter, a lovely glass of unoaked Chardonnay and the prize - the St Clement Posset and Chocolate Ice Cream. Good wholesome portions, friendly staff and moderately priced

This was my Christmas present from my husband and we spent 3 very comfortable nights at the Rose and Crown. The room was lovely, well equipped and comfortable and the food each night was generous, well flavoured and tasty. Breakfasts were similarly good with a great selection of hot options as well as home made muesli and granola. The staff were friendly and polite, contrary to previous reviews, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay - thank you!

Excellent food, we both had venison pie which is incredibly rich and tasty. Staff and service very good. The Rose & Crown is definitely more restaurant than pub and with restaurant prices. I have no problem with the price as it is very good food but it’s not cheap so don’t be surprised.

After a beautiful journey on a crisp and cold but sunny winters day we pulled up at the Rose and Crown. A lovely quaint village with a beautiful pub. We were pleasantly greeted by two staff members behind the bar, where we ordered a drink and were handed menus and told to take a seat. We decided to go for the sharing charcuterie platter and share a Marie-rose prawn sandwich as we were torn between the charcuterie and fish platter, so hoped this was the best fonprimise. The food came out very promptly and everything was lovely and fresh. Treating ourselves afterwards we indulged into their sticky toffee pudding which was delicious. A great pub, well worth a find. The dinning room looked inviting for another return one evening.

We were on a weekend away staying in nearby Mickleton and we thought it would be nice to walk into Romaldkirk and have a few glasses of champagne, after all we were celebrating a small group windfall! Anyways we walked into the Rose and Crown. I need to add that we were all dressed smart, age range from 25 to 62 so not a young loud group! As we entered the Rose and crown we walked up to the bar and asked if it was ok to come in and have a drink. The barmaid asked how many of us there were, we advised 7. She then rolled her eyes and said “well i don’t have anywhere for you to sit, i suppose you can stand round there at the bar”! And you need to imagine this being said with distain, she was rude, clearly didn’t want our custom , and when we politely declined her offer of “standing at the bar”, she looked over at some locals eating their lunch and laughed as we left! She knew the only other place to Drink was The Kirk, and she was fully aware it wasn’t an establishment frequented often, but we still went there and spent £100 plus. So it’s the pubs loss.

After booking a table for 5 we actually arrived with 2 extra friends. All they wanted was to have a drink and sandwich for lunch. They could fit on our table, The bar staff told us they were fully booked and could not take their order. The other tables in the room had reserved signs on them but were unoccupied the full time we were there. They served are friends a drink so what difference would it make if they had a sandwich. The staff were abrupt and not at all friendly. I would not encourage anyone to use this hotel. This is not the impression of our villages that encourages visitors.

Three of us went for Sunday lunch, one vegetarian, not always easy to accommodate in this area. The vegetarian food was delicious although there was only one ‘option’. The fish & beef also apparently went down well but all meals are high end in terms of price. Good to have local sourcing information provided & worth paying for. I’m well known for liking my vegetables on the al dente side but these sprouts were something else! I literally couldn’t get my fork in. Didn’t send them back though as they were edible & the roasted veg was plentiful & very nice. The beer went down well. Service was fine, no issues. Nice fires lit. General ambience pleasant.

I last reviewed this place in 2019 where my main issue was poor service and would you believe it things haven't changed. Service today was non existent. We were seated for over 10 minutes .... Not even a greeting. Front of house totally disorganised. It's a wonder the floor covering wasn't worn out because of the too-ing and fro-ing which never seemed to produce anything. This service is the worst I've experienced anywhere.. Cone on.... Get a grip !

Parking is plenty and is a one way system, so don't try to get to the front out of laziness or you could get stuck during busier times and end up having to go back out and round into the main dual carriage way and roundabout if there is too much traffic. The parking is free and it is a gravel car park . As you enter there is a sign to wait to be seated, but don't wait if there are plenty of seats, as you'll be there forever. I think the sign should be put away during quiet times and brought out in busier times. Once seated it's easy to order, choose what you want from the menu and go to the counter (remember what your table number is). Massive cake/sweet selection at the till area so I suggest having a look there as well for sure! At first glance £4(something) for a Melba is a bit much but then when you see the size of it, it's fair. Delicious too! They have take away boxes as well, yum! The last time I went I tried the hot beef bap and it was really good, no chewy, gristle or fatty bits in the meat at all. Spot on. Time before was the cheese pie which I absolutely loved (my lactose intolerant body however rejected it, but was still worth it and I'll do it again NGL). The majority of the staff are lovely, I've never felt anyone has been rude (even when they seemed to be having a crappy and busy day). Have been a few times now and definitely will go again. Edit: it's also (well behaved) dog friendly.

A hidden gem of a pub. We were recommended by a friend to seek out this place just off the main road between the Eden Arms Roundabout and Newton Aycliffe. Good friendly staff. Food was lovely .Little Jill had the Pie of the day, Chicken and Ham, I had the Gammon. Both were really lovely. The only gripe i had was the overflowing wall mounted cigarette bin at the main door it was unsightly and off putting to us non smokers. Maybe move it or empty it more often. Only a little gripe and will not put us off returning.
