Roots in Eastbourne

1st time here, opted for the veggie breakfast in the end, a nice choice and a good daily specials menu too! Have to return to try more. Nice friendly staff and good layout inside. Would have given it 5 stars but the kitchen was fairly smokey and that ended up inside where you eat! Maybe best to eat outside if you don't want to smell of cooked food.

Was looking for a quick lunch before heading home and came across this place. The menu was awash with so many lovely choices it took us ages to decide which was the most tempting, I went for the roots vegan lunch bap with veggie pattie, hash brown, large slice of grilled tomato and avocado mash in a wholemeal bap. Absolutely lip smackingly delicious,all washed down with a big pot of tea. Will definitely head here again next time I’m in town. Nice friendly table service too. Thoroughly recommended to all.

Popped into Roots as a wanted a Saturday morning breakfast. Staff were really polite. My Full English was top notch. Overall experience was very good. Would defo go ago when I’m next in Eastbourne.

Had a wonderful breakfast at Roots, can’t fault the food or the service. I’ve been here a few times and always had a great experience and fabulous food.

I had the most wonderful Xmas Dinner I could ever have imagined from roots delivered to me. An exceptional chef. Wonderful, polite, friendly staff & service. The highest standards of cleanliness. I couldn't fault it if I tried. I look forward to heading in there in January for a good English fry up, & more. A place to relax & feel you're among friends.

Called in for a cuppa and a "little something" before heading home. It's become a good habit of mine. Today did not disappoint - a fresh scone served warm and accompanied by a generous helping of jam to go with my coffee. Service is friendly and efficient - order at the counter and it is brought to your table. More substantial food is available throughout the day to eat in or take away - a variety of savoury dishes and/orcakes made from locally sourced ingredients. I like that there is information about local events available for customers as well as a used book service .

Tuve el aguacate y los huevos escalfados y mi amigo disfrutó el desayuno completo, ambos eran increíbles y con café a la 1. 50, quién podría pedir más.El joven que nos atendió fue extremadamente servicial y atento.No podría pedir nada mejor si buscas una cafetería en Eastbourne.

This place provides a well cooked lovely breakfast. The only issue is their food safety rating. After talking to the chef they are doing everything they should be - so owners sort it as your not doing yourselves justice . We will return and recommend. The waitress could do with smartening up, bit scruffy and hair all over the place and she does food prep. But as mentioned hot food excellent

Great little place this is. Good grub, very wholesome, and all freshly prepared. A bit limited on the cakes selection, but the coffee is up there with the best I've ever had, anywhere in the world. We've just had Welsh rarebit with a poached egg on top, a coronation chicken sandwich, a latte and an americano. Grub served with a little side salad and both very very tasty. Total bill was £16. Well worth it.

Stopped for lunch, had fishfinger sandwich and BLT with extra chicken and fried egg. Enormous portions, lovely fresh bread. Cakes looked nice but we were too full to try one

Was delighted to find this place does 'oatly barista', my milk of choice AND they don't charge a surplus for it! All hot drinks are £1.50 all day every day. The bread pudding was good too!!

I LOVE this place. Fabulous homemade food, always using fresh ingredients. AMAZINGLY, all hot drinks are £1.50 every day! Fresh homemade soups and sausage rolls, fantastic full English breakfast, excellent quiche, super salad bowls. All cakes homemade! Laid back, homely atmosphere - never feels rushed and stressy like some other ‘trendy’ places. I have a huge choice of eateries where I work, but find myself choosing Roots over and over because of the range of options and very reasonable prices

I use Roots all the time for coffee, or a pot of tea and breakfast and it’s always lovely. But recently they have really increased their offering’s on the farm shop side as well! Homemade jams, sauces, spice mixes even their own ready meals range! Definitely more than just a coffee shop! And definitely worth a visit.

I go to Roots for coffee nearly everyday because it’s my absolutely favourite. Wonderful staff, great coffee and a lovely atmosphere. A great place for lunch too! The food is all homemade and absolutely delicious...would thoroughly recommend! Chloe

Have used this sometimes on a daily basis I love their bacon and egg baguette so much. Popular with friends who use it for breakfast a lot of the time. That should tell you enough.

Thought I'd treat myself to breakfast and it was certainly a good decision. Lovely vegan breakfast, everything was fresh and well cooked. And really good coffee. Brought some bits from their farmshop section as well.

In a great location near the town centre and railway station this is a little gem. The club sandwich was huge and very tasty. The garnish of salad and coleslaw was just right. Great service too.

I used to enjoy eating here but the last two occasions have been unpleasant as the staff on duty on a Saturday are both rude and ignorant. No eye contact is made with the customer and then on my last visit, I was ignored for 20 minutes resulting in my friends and I walking out. As a result, I will not be eating at Roots again and have passed this information to friends and family. There are better and more professional places in Eastbourne. Owners, find yourself some better staff.

Only my second visit to Roots in Eastbourne, but certainly my last.

Excellent veggie breakfast, generous portions, well cooked and nicely plated. The tables could do with a thorough cleaning down, and it's a bit pricey.

I visited this shop four times during my mini-break and loved their food. I had the Carrot cake three times, and Quiche and salad. All home made and delicious. I only wish I lived in Eastbourne so I could visit this place more often.

Very average cafe. I had a quiche with ham. It was not properly cooked. The pastry was raw in the middle of the base and the filling was runny. The coffee machine was not working. The bacon and egg breakfasts looked ok.

We love Roots. The breakfast is big and prices reasonable. The difference between their breakfast and most others in town is the quality of the produce is top notch, especially the sausages which aren't cheap and stuffed with fillers like most places. Eggs always cooked to perfection and the hash browns are SO GOOD

Actually stopped to have their offer of Tea and cake . Ended up having scones with jam ( unexpected) sausage roll to share and scotch egg to share served with coleslaw and salad ( again unexpected). All for a very unexpected affordable price.

I don’t think the new menu is going to help increase business barring in mind a coffee shop has just opened up next door. Needs to be more choice again.

Went to walk in and got 0 service owner and his sulky waitress just looked at us and said nothing, no hello, smile or inviting presence, so my wife and I walked out and found another more welcoming cafe, you snooze you lose fools.

Estábamos visitando Eastbourne para el Fibrefest (a mi pareja le encanta la costura con agujas ...) y luego paseamos por ahí sintiéndonos un poco de hambre, y me gustó el aspecto de la cafetería Roots y la tienda de la granja. Nada lujoso, pero prometía comida casera. Ambos tuvimos el desayuno vegetariano, que era absolutamente encantador, un plato colorido, muy bien presentado (ver foto). Me impresionaron particularmente los espárragos, que con demasiada frecuencia tienden a ser un poco fibrosos, pero esto era prefecto. El café (marca Marley) también era muy agradable. Había una buena variedad de tartas caseras que se ofrecían, pero yo estaba demasiado lleno para aprovecharlas; y también varios pasteles diferentes y rollos de salchicha (recuerdo el rollo de salchicha de chile, rollo de pudín negro).

This is a good wholesome cafe without any frills. It styles itself as a farmshop and certainly supports small growers for coffee. The decor is rustic and there is plenty of space with newspapers available (Daily Mail). I had pancakes with bacon which were good although simple and devoid of the fruit and cream trimmings found in more expensive cafes. Everything is freshly prepared and certainly other customer's cooked breakfasts were beautifully presented. I found this a relaxing place to spend some time and shall return. Cost was around £10 for pancakes and coffee.

Excellent choice of fresh, hand made, food for lunch ranging from Sandwiches to salads and soups. All fresh local produce and catering to all diets. I can't recommend the Scotch Eggs highly enough and some of the cakes a simply delicious

Went into Roots for lunch today, we both had bacon rolls and a pot of tea. We really enjoyed our lunch. The bacon is delicious, really meaty and a decent sized portion. The rolls were really fresh and the meal came with a small side salad. The tea was also really good. I often have breakfast at Roots, but this was the first time Ive been in there for lunch and I highly recommend it.

Been here twice now. Veg breakfast that is inventive and cooked to perfection. Cherry tomatoes on vine particularly sweet and delicious. Good value and quick to come out. Well worth seeking out.

Fuimos a desayunar, hemos estado anteriormente en el pasado y nos ha encantado. Pero esta vez nos decepcionó un poco, los dos teníamos un desayuno completo y preferiríamos una opción para tener un desayuno más grande en el menú como solían hacer. Faltó no tener dos huevos y papas fritas y las dos salchichas. El desayuno esta vez vino con uno de cada uno y una porción de pudín negro que no era muy agradable. El desayuno era bueno con los productos frescos, pero preferiría más.

Un amigo y yo nos reunimos aquí cada pocos meses para ponernos al día con un almuerzo ligero. Los sándwiches son geniales, abundantemente rellenos, frescos con una ensalada encantadora. Los precios son geniales también. El servicio es rápido y el personal es muy amable. Perdemos la noción del tiempo en el chat, pero el personal nunca se desplaza o comienza a despejarse a nuestro alrededor en un intento sutil de seguir avanzando. Es lo suficientemente tranquilo para poder chatear correctamente. Recomiendo a fondo.

Popped in for a quick lunch. Went for the eggs benedict, very nice. Really good latté too. Also grabbed an Eccles cake to go...delish! Quick and friendly service.

Steer clear, minimal menu, not all available. When food came out no sauces or dressings available, soggy chips. I’ll stop there, wont be back.

Everything about their fry up is amazing. You can tell they source great ingredients as the sausages and bacon taste like butchers quality. Cooked to perfection every time. Staff are helpful and friendly.

Went for brunch and cake all of which were lovely....BUT..the place was full of smoke and after leaving our clothes smelt so strongly of burnt oil!! The extractor cannot be up to the job.Sounds petty but it would put me off eating inside again.

I've been to Roots a few times now, a couple of times for both breakfast & lunch. On both my breakfast visits I found the menu to be great value for money and when I requested a couple of alterations to my breakfast they did this happily and without a problem. I've visited with people who have opted for the large breakfast which is around £7 and it is massive, you will not leave hungry.

Had a breakfast, nice staff once finally acknowledge (took 3 minutes of coffee making before this happened). The breakfast was huge and most aspects of it were delicious but I'm afraid the vine tomatoes cooked on the vine doesn't work. You can't get them off the vine as it goes hard, we just couldn't eat them. Also this place badly needs to get or replace its extractor fan as the whole place was filling with cooking smoke, it was actually hazy and got more hazy as our food was being cooked. Was left with clothes snd hair smelling of fried foods. Also friendly old customers wandering through to the kitchen to talk to the young female staff and random men (manager?) going in and out the kitchen also didn't feel right. Shame as the eggs and hash browns were perfect, good chunky toast and excellent coffee.

Copious and good quality local produce for breakfast. Whirring fridge and slightly bitter coffee for my taste, but this would not stop me from returning.

Stopped here for lunch with family before our return home. Delicious macaroni cheese washed down with a decent cup of coffee. My partner and her son had the vegetarian breakfast which they both said was very good. An independent cafe that deserves to be patronised over the multi nationals. clean and spacious, with a good selection of home made food. Friendly staff that were helpful and obliging. Recommended.

I've eaten here twice. My first time was a good experience, the second, yesterday, was not. the Eggs Benedict was made without any love: two poached eggs on clumps of ham with a hollandaise that Heinz would reject. Disappointed.

Popped in here on the way to the station from where we were staying. I agree with all of the positive reviews I've read on here. A very tasty breakfast for a decent price. Good coffee and polite, helpful staff. Will go back again.

Breakfast at Roots is one of the nicest meals I've had in Eastbourne - it was wholesome and absolutely delicious. The service was warm and prompt and the young staff were a credit to the business. Will be happy to return. Loved the produce available for sale - including the young plants outside.

Popped in for breakfast after checking out other local coffee shops and restaurants over the past few days. We had heard good things about the coffee & we were certainly not disappointed best coffee in Eastbourne & a good bit cheaper than there competition. Food was excellent would & the staff are very helpful & polite. Certainly recommend the all day breakfast will be making this our regular breakfast stop from now on.

In between meeting myself and a colleague needed to eat so we popped into Roots for a sandwich! We both decided to have something cooked instead and settled on the 'fish finger sandwich and chips'. They make their own chips and cook them to order and the fish fingers were definitely not Birdseye. Lovely meal and great value for money. They also do take away and a selection of veg boxes.

My Wife and I were looking for local eatery and came across Roots. Now, the area is teaming with bistros but we had heard that this particular bistro is a family run business and is very green. They only use local materials of the best grade. We entered and found the only vacant table where we were greeted by a young lady who took our order for coffee and food. The coffee came within two minutes and the food in ten. We had different meals of which we were both fully happy with for quality, size and temperature. Neither could be faulted. There was a steady stream of customers both eating in and take away. From young to old. The place is not huge but by golly once you've eaten there you will go back again and again.It is located within 50 yards of the railway station and has bus stops all round and is close to the town centre.

I've occasionally got a coffee to takeaway from this cafe and the other weekend i managed to finally get time to have some cake. I was not disappointed. Yummy. I had the Apple & Carrot Cake, it was worth it.The new coffee, Marley Coffee, is great. My husband and i are hoping to get chance to stop by for breakfast soon.

I used to come to roots weekly to enjoy the breakfast with a coffee and I was mainly drawn by the nice setup, nice staff and value. Recently they have redone the menu - coffee is no longer included in the breakfast price, and the past two occasions we have been the service has been VERY slow. We have started going elsewhere..which is a shame as it used to be a favourite of mine. Food is good though.

My wife and I often walk past this place but this was our first visit.Despite the front page on here they are open on Sundays, so in we went for breakfast. They were more than happy to rejig their menu for us. Sadly their veggie sausages contain eggs so as a vegan that was a no-no. However they did a lovely baked beans on toast with a side order of mushrooms which were beautiful. It felt nice and clean and had a welcoming atmosphere.

Quite often go here when in town, occasionally for lunch but usually for a cup of tea at least. Good selection of wholesome food and drinks.

We stopped in here one evening after attending some local Christmas markets, and I was very impressed.We had a mixture of dinners and breakfasts, and considering that they were cooked fresh, they arrived quickly.The food was lovely, and I think good value for what you got; the sweet potato chips were gorgeous.There were 4 adults and 2 children in our group, and the staff were able to accommodate us and make us feel welcome. The staff were polite, courteous, and the facilities were clean and pleasant. All in all we felt very welcome and will be going back soon.

We've been visiting on numerous occasions over the past year but on Sunday we had an unusual and pretty poor experience. Their breakfasts are usually good but they must have a new cook:- burnt mushrooms, hard eggs (although they were asked soft and over easy), sausages hard as though heated in a microwave.And to cap it all when we were paying we presented their completed loyalty card for a free coffee only to be told that they now use a different sort of coffee. I asked on a couple of occasions but she stuck to her guns. We won't be returning here..... there are loads of other places in Eastbourne.

We visited here after hearing about the new ' Marley' coffee from our friends. We also had the full breakfast which is the best we have had for a long time , the butchers sausages were delicious and the farmhouse bread very tasty.The new coffee is probably the best coffee in town and much more value for money than other coffee shops in the area, give it a try you won't be disappointed.

My friend took me here for lunch and I'm glad she did. Great service, tasty generous portion of ham sandwich with salad and crisps. My friend had egg on toast and it looked very nice. Everything was served promptly and with a smile. Seems a popular place and rightly so.

Visited with a friend for coffee and a catch up after we were unable to get a table at our regular coffee stop. It's within a couple of minutes from the station so very onvenient. The plum tray bake cake was very good and the coffee was good. Friendly service and pleased to discover that there is fresh fruit and vegetables for sale here in addition to a selection of chutneys. Will visit again.

I went here with friends - their choice- in the past had walked by this cafe as front and inside decor not enticed me to go in but once in the food was good. They do gluten free bread and the Welsh rarebit on toast was delicious. Lovely salad with it too. Cafe sells veg, cakes, jams etc too. An interesting mix of a cafe but would return as food was good.

I went here with a colleague between meetings and we both had the quinoa salad. It was tasty, fresh and interesting. Nicely presented and very reasonably priced. I have had coffee here on a number of occasions and admired the food coming out but this was the first time I had eaten here and will not be the last.

Went to this coffee shop and the food is very nice with clear allergy labelling. The shop is clean but the decoration is a little odd, seaside has been mixed with farm and these two don't really go together. Either your bucket and spade or your tractor not both. Coffee machine is a rubbish automatic one and provides very mediocre coffee, the main thing for a good coffee shop is good coffee! Crockery is also a bit rubbish with cups having a very garish logo on the side. The staff are nice and the food was great with clear allergen labelling, so I mustn't detract from that. Change your coffee machine for a proper one and train the staff to use it, decide on your decor and stick to a theme. The fridge top shelf also blocks out the cakes on the top which are a main selling item. Get rid of IKEA on the cake boards, sand it off as people don't want to see it.

Sweet place with a real character. Friendly staff and lively home made food. We enjoyed out time, however next time I will go for children portion as it was too much for me :)

A very wholesome little cafe with good service and great tasting food at good prices. Local produce also. Give it a try and you will be happy you did - we were - and we have eaten in and ordered take out.

My main gripe about cafes around the U.K. is the appalling sausages they serve up which contain Lord knows what except meat! I am happy to report that this cafe serves proper sausages and can also happily report that the rest of my all-day breakfast was well-cooked and nicely served by pleasant staff. The meal also came with chunky toast and an excellent cup of coffee.There were menus on each table which were easy to read and the inside of the cafe was pleasantly decorated and the colour in keeping with eachother.

First visit but was impressed with the standard of the food we had. Bit smelly with cooking odours.Quite close to the seafront ,the theatres and other amenities.

Popped in here for breakfast for our first visit. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was very good with fresh eggs and good fresh produce. The only thing we found even though we sat by the door was that we found our clothes smelt of the breakfast and the kitchen could do with a better extractor fan. But overall good service and very good breakfast and will be going back.

Hadn't been here for some time owing to lacklustre service. However, it's much improved and the food is lovely.My one main criticism is that your clothes will stink of chip fat. Even if you sit by the doorway. This has happened to me every time I've been and now puts me off going back.They need a fit for purpose extraction system in the kitchen.

Been here for breakfast numerous times while working in the area. Went in a large group and the quality of the food wasn't compromised. They do a good breakfast with quality ingredients. They support local and they offer some great healthy options to eat. Atmosphere in Roots is relaxed and the decor is rustic. The staff are friendly but you can easily go in there and not be disturbed if that's what you want too. One of the best places to get a hearty breakfast in Eastbourne for quality and comfort.

This place would appeal to vegetarians/ healthy eaters as the produce they use is locally sourced and fresh (apart from the tea/coffee of course).I would strongly recommend a scone with their delicious homemade jam.The menu is varied and the service very attentive. You can sit inside or outside.

We have been here for lunch twice in the last week, we enjoyed both visits very much, the food is fresh and plentiful, the staff pleasant and prompt and even the veg we took home (they sell it here) made a fine cauliflower and leek bake for dinner! If you are in the area and fancy a good value and good quality lunch you couldnt do much better..and you could do very much worse..heartily recommended, especially the fish finger sandwiches :-)

We arrived an hour before they were due to close - but the manager felt the need to apologise to his kitchen staff for us turning up at all, reassuring them our order 'wasn't too bad'. When they'd finished smoking cigarettes (without closing the back door), the staff started putting the chairs up on the nearby tables and topped up the mop bucket next to our table as we ate. The food wasn't great either to be honest. Wouldn't recommend.

popped in here to meet up with 2 people for a coffee ,delicious and obviously very popular. having had our coffee we decided to have a snack lunch. macaroni cheese for me and chilli con carne for my wife . both delicious and good value. we liked roots so suggest you try it !!

We've been here several times for breakfast - this has to be the best in Eastbourne for surroundings, freshness and value. Convenient for the railway station and the town centre shops.This is an 'urban foodstore' not plush, but stripped back with wooden tables and chairs - but creates a pleasant and comfortable environment. We have tried various options off the menu, and each have been freshly cooked, well presented and delicious. the 'standard breakfast' is a good size, but the 'Roots breakfast' is a must if you are hungry!They are always willing to oblige if you want to mix and match the various ingredients to suit yourself too.Great place.... try it!

I went in for breakfast today, first ever time as I got recommend by a friend! 10/10 effort for the finished product! It's nothing like any other cafe in Eastbourne! Good atmosphere, also another 10/10 for the food! I'm a builder so I'm almost a breakfast/greasy spoon connoisseur, best sausages by far in Eastbourne, probably even East Sussex no where offers you butchers sausages to compliment the free range eggs home grown tomatoes and all the amazing products that got served to me today! My husband and I popped in for breakfast, he had the roots breakfast and I had eggs Benedict both were very tasty. I asked for crispy bacon and it was perfect. My husbands was a huge plateful very good value.

Popped in here for first time early Septmeber 2015.... Very pleasantly surprised. The coffee was gorgeous and my bacon sandwich was done exactly how I wanted ( very very very crispy !! ). The young man serving us was very smiley and pleasant and he made us feel like we had been coming there for ages. Nice relaxed atmosphere. Prices were very good. Definitely will be going back.

Popped in for a light lunch. Table hadn't been cleared but was promptly. The food came quickly and was very nice. The service was good but the only slight issue was a regular customer who was monopolising the staff's time. After a while they retreated to the back and the customer then began chatting to the customers. Not something that could necessarily be helped, but slightly spoilt the atmosphere.
