Very disappointed - Really! £8 for a bowl of Heinz tomato soup. Such cheffing finesse - not. Disappointed to say the very least.

- Outside seating and tables could do with a bit of a tlc/cleaning (but it did add to it's outdoor 'shabby chic' vibe) Service could be improved especially at busier times. + Plenty of parking Well maintained grounds and buildings - next to the river. Food was excellent! - we had the battered king prawns, salmon and lamb rump (which was a tad overcooked) Very reasonably priced for what you get. Overall this was one of the highlights of our visit to Callander, I would recommend pre-booking especially for dinner. We will be back if we are in the area.

As much as it pains me to write, I was very disappointed in the Bistro. The setting is beautiful and our server was very attentive - however, our coffees were served cold and our cakes were shop bought!!! A detail only given away by notifying our server that 2/3 of us had an allergy. He checked the “packaging” and told us the “allergens in bold”. For where we were, I’d of expected slightly higher quality/local bakery products. The walk around the gardens after was the highlight.

Lovely experience. We were in the Bistro in the delightful orangery within the grounds rather than in the main hotel. Great food. We both had lamb and a delicious red wine recommended by our waitress who despite being alone in this place, which is apart from the main restaurant in the hotel was calm, helpful and very attentive (not overly just perfectly). We look forward to returning.

A mixed bag but overall very nice. The bad……ketchup and vinegar in a sachet? Come on !!! No mint sauce for the lamb. What!!!!! Bench seats bloody uncomfortable. Do the owners ever fit on them to test them? Tad expensive especially the starters. The good. Lovely staff. Food lovely and the ambiance is lovely.

A lovely lunch today. Attentive staff, nice menu, dog friendly. Of the three starters and three mains, the only fault was overcooked lamb. Asked for pink/medium rare and it sadly wasn’t. It won’t put me off returning. The ambience and setting are lovely.

We enjoyed the four course menu for a family birthday. The food was very creative and delicious and they were happy to accommodate our pescatarian dietary habit. We started with tidbits and drinks in the library, where we were asked our choices by the host, then were hurried into to the dining room before having a chance to finish our canapes and tartlets. We assumed this was because it was a busy night, but when we entered the dining room we were one of two full tables amongst about 20 that were set, complete with gorgeous candles blazing on all. No other diners every came (though we were seated at 8 pm, so perhaps they had already been). It was eerily quiet as there were no servers taking orders and no background music. One by one courses and little extras were delivered in an unwarranted frenzy by either our punctilious host or two hushed young servers. Everything was delicious and we so enjoyed the treasures unfolding with details like cucumber foam, caviar, etc. I would definitely repeat the surreal experience just to see what else the inventive chef has in store. About $100 per person plus drinks (my son's 19th birthday Aperol Spritz was a work of art). There's a wonderful garden and yard area to explore before or after.

My wife & I decided to pay a visit during the good weather, enjoyed it that much I took my mum back there a few days later. The service was great as was the food but if there was any negatives it would be that it was slightly over-priced and maybe not enough on the menu to suit everyone so my advice would be to check the menu before you visit. But a nice lunch in a lovely setting nevertheless.

Really disappointed with our eating experience at the potting shed. Completely overpriced and underwhelming food. My chicken salad bowl, although beautifully cooked, chicken breast was on the smallest of basic salad, encircled by a large amount of veg crisps, no dressing. Charging £14.50 for this is a rip off. £8.50 Sandwiches were also a real disappointment, thin supermarket bread, presented with the crusts trimmed, each sandwich consisted of two fairly small triangles. Tasty filling but for too expensive for what we got. Waitress was lovely, good service, venue a delight but sadly we won’t be back for food and as locals, thats a real shame.

We finally got to spend a lazy afternoon at Roman camp after Covid had cancelled our mother's day lunch (boo) back in March. So lovely to return to a favourite haunt. Lunch in the main restaurant was superb as always, the fish cooking being particularly excellent. Coffee and aperitifs in the elegant lounge, a long walk through the gardens, it was a perfect afternoon and everyone was so pleased to see us and we were so taken care off. The fixed price set lunch here for food of this quality with amuse-bouche and petit fours is always exceptionally good value. The hotel is spacious and therefore super secure and comfortable in times of social distancing. The hotel has clearly put the health and well-being of its customers and staff front and centre of how it currently operates which is to be commended. Thank you.

I love a day out in the country, to jump in the car or on a bus and leave the city behind. And what do you do once you've finished enjoying the peace and tranquility?Lunch of course. You go for lunch! Callander is one of those stunning Scottish places you can visit without having to travel for hours from the big towns. You can enjoy the wee shops and a donder down the river before heading for a nice meal. For our nice meal we went to a house, a very big house in the country, because our lunch venue was the exquisite Roman Camp Hotel. It is one of those amazing destinations that makes you feel like you're starring in your own romantic movie, you know tree lined driveway, gravel paths, archways, Rose bushes, a Robin landing on your outstretched hand as a string quartet accompanies your every footstep. (maybe some of those are more imagined than real...) The inside is just as stunning as out. It's all high ceilings, elegant paintings and wooden panelling, the epitome of rural luxury, all of its near 400 year heritage very much on display. The hotel makes the most of these spaces as it first invites you into the comfortable lounge for menu perusal, canapés and an aperitif. There is so much to be said for relaxing in an armchair whilst you decide on your dinner and chew over what you are going to chew on. There is that interesting balancing act going on, one where traditional and luxurious tries not to descend into twee, stuffy or heaven forbid pretentious. The Roman Camp does this rather well, the service is professional and unobtrusive, but friendly. The atmosphere refined, certainly, but relaxed and welcoming. Nowhere is this more obvious than in the menu. The chef could have played it straight down the line with classic Scottish fare done well, but instead there's some pretty cheeky twists thrown in. That is what I liked best about the Roman Camp, you are lulled into thinking you are getting solid reliable Mark Darcy, Jamie from Love Actually or even King George VI Colin Firth and instead you get Kingsman Harry Hart instead... Whilst you are busy making your mind up, you are thoughtfully provided with some wee Canapés, just to tantalise you with what is to come. A mini Cheese quiche / tartlet, a haggis bonbon and an assortment of nuts were perfect nibbles to accompany your first drink. Hot and delicious you simply can't wait to see what's coming next. After ordering we continued relaxing in the lounge until we were told our lunch was ready. We bid au revoir to the comfortable lounge and were taken into the restaurant. Well I thought it was my wedding day all over again. The tables are all dressed, candles burned as brightly as the fire in the gorgeous hearth, this place was magical on a grim winters morning, I wonder what it's like at night. We were seated and served freshly baked bread along with our starters, and from here good just got even better. Like I mentioned earlier, any decent Scottish restaurant will serve you Salmon. But this was Organic Salmon floating on a bed of Chestnut & Parsnip Purée, but the real kicker was the Peanut Butter Dressing. Flakey succulent salmon was contrasted by the crisp and crunchy skin, on its own you could tell this was a top quality piece of fish. But combined with the puree and sauce that delivered a well rounded nuttiness as well as a subtle sweetness, pretty much all of your taste buds went into action together. Depending on your fork you could get a different taste profile every time, a beautiful variation on the classic salmon. The Braised Pig Cheek, one of those underrated cuts of meat that we at home seem reluctant to source and cook, but professional kitchens are so keen to serve. Slowly cooked to deliver the melt in the mouth texture that can be found by pulling apart with only a fork. Massive rich Meaty flavours need a bold accompaniment and Red Cabbage with its inherent sweetness is just the ticket. Top this up with some Maple syrup and then add in some lip smacking Soy and again you have a well balanced dish that exercises every part of your palate. Following the success of the starters and the efficient service to prepare us for our main course, expectations were of course running high. We were not disappointed. Perfectly pink Rump of Lamb, tender and juicy rightly took centre stage. But the Sweet & Sour Aubergine, which the lamb rested upon, was a triumph, big bold flavours which complemented the lamb perfectly. Add to the plate literally half a red onion, a tomato and a drizzle of pan juices and you have one of the finest lamb dishes we've had for a long time. Would the Roast Cod be as good. Yes, and then some. The cod in itself, like the salmon one course ago, was delicious, a simply cooked top quality piece of fish, but the dish became outstanding thanks to the accessories. The Langoustine Claw Risotto was so creamy with just the right amount of crustacean to add flavour, without being over-bearing. The surprise addition of skilfully trimmed sweetcorn added another layer of crunchy texture, such a great, well thought out dish. Amazing! After our plates were whisked away the great service continued with a wee crumb down. Love a good crumb down me! Dessert orders were duly noted and a short time later two more fantastic dishes arrived at our table. The first, the cheese selection is always a ready reckoner for any good restaurant. This is all about the quality of the ingredients and it doesn't get much better than some high end unpasteurised fromage. Homemade Quince (naturally) and oatcakes, it's that simple, maybe a nice port would have been the finishing touch, but alas I was driving. The cheese selection was one of the few dishes without any twists, the same cannot be said of the Apple Mousse. Beautifully presented the mousse with a slice of apple and some blackberries was delicate, a refreshing fruity flavour to end the meal. The Pistachio Sponge were little green cubes with a nutty edge to cut through the fruit. But, the Avocado Ice Cream was a stroke of genius. Completely obscure, but a great balancer of the acidic apple, it provided a different sweetness and I would definitely have it again. Like so many of the dishes, this one has been thought through and skilfully executed by the kitchen brigade. Following our desserts we were again shown to the lounge for coffee / tea and petit fours, again made by the clever chefs in the back no doubt. The only disappointment in our whole afternoon was that now our experience was coming to an end, we enjoyed every minute and forkful. The Roman Camp is such a great venue, and with rooms as well its a lovely wee spot to base yourself as you tour Stirlingshire. If the restaurant is too much for you, then the Pottingshed Cafe / Bistro will offer simpler lighter dishes, but under the same skilful chefs watching eye, I imagine it would be excellent as well. The set lunch menu we enjoyed, three courses in the restaurant with canapés and petit fours top and tailing it, was thirty pounds a head, which for the quality of both food and service, I would say was spot on. The Roman Camp should very much be on your list if you are up Callander way, highly recommended by us.

This bistro certainly has a different feel to it, set in the grounds of the hotel and in a former garden outhouse! Internally the premises had been delightfully decorated and the atmosphere with candles was very nice. The dinner menu wasn’t very extensive (about 6 mains) but the food we had was very good. Portions weren’t too large but prices were probably higher than equivalent food elsewhere in the town. Drinks were very expensive. Service was pleasant and efficient. I think that the bistro needs some external lighting, especially along the dark paths, and better signage as one approaches down the drive.

Me and my girlfriend arranged to have dinner here to celebrate her birthday. I must say the food was very good, the desserts were disappointing. The huge problem was the service. The waiters didn’t know what food they were serving, were extremely fast removing your plates, they were nervous and shaky....they were overall a disaster. At one point we were each drinking the same red wine out of 2 different glasses. At the end they made a mistake with the bill that took over 20-30 min to fix. Worse service we have ever had.

Not even finishing drinks or water we got up highly embarrassed, when speaking to her she offered to take 2 drinks off bill, told her that it was unacceptable behaviour, paid and went to find owner in main hotel who was very apologetic and gave us our money back. Took other couples email address and promised to contact them, still waiting! This was on 5th May, owner continues to ignore emails and phone calls, not impressed with service!

After a pleasant weekend in Loch Lomond we were travelling back at stopped of for a coffee at the hotels bistro, we asked if we could get coffee, the waitress was lovely at that point and welcomed us in, we ordered our hot drinks they took ages to come out cold, so we asked for them to be heated up. They were brought back and we were about to start drinking them when a further 4 guests arrived, we were then approached by the waitress and at the top of her voice told to leave as she needed the table. Myself and my company were so embarrassed we left but after she made us pay. Left the bistro went over to the hotel to make a complaint, manager seemed lovely, was so apologetic said he would deal with the person involved and would get back to me, this was on the 5/5/19, and still to this day I am still waiting on a response. I have phoned and emailed no reply. This is absolutely disgusting behaviour, no respect for there passing trade. I was promised a voucher or something to compensate my embarrassment. If this is how they treat tourist I do not under stand how they get business. My name is carol Buchan and if they are reading these reviews I would hope to think something is done about it. I for one would not recommend this place to anyone

My husband and I had a fabulous meal here; the service was friendly and attentive. Although the A la Carte menu looked inviting, we went for the taster menu and were so glad we did; there was nothing that wasn't a pleasant surprise or delight - the roe deer was a revelation.

To have a restaurant of this calibre near our home is such a treat. Situated in a fine old building you enter through a portcullis style door to be greeted with an open fire. It really has atmosphere but it also has style, great service and a fantastic tasting menu. Thoughtful, well presented dishes with great flavours. We were treated like kings. One of our best Scottish meal experiences.

The choice for each course was limited to 2, however, the food was amazing, with service to match. Very helpful, and attentive. Only negative comment would be that building is a little tired and would benefit from some money spent on it. It was a bitterly cold day, and rooms could have been warmer.

Very good, polite service. Excellent food. An old building with real coal fires which gave a lovely homely feeling. The only thing missing was some background music. There was only two other couples and ourselves in the sitting room pre lunch and then in the restaurant, at times the quiet was strained.

Myself and my gorgeous partner have been looking forward to our visit to the Potting shed at the Roman Camp in Callander. Evening meal, such a quaint setting. Lovely entrance from the Main Street, which requires more lumins. Very dark.

We have returned to the Roman Camp after over 10 years. We absolutely love the whole experience. Grand Afternoon Tea is amazing, each little piece was delicious, homemade, savoury and sweet components were full of flavour, fresh, beautifully presented and served but impeccable and friendly staff. The ambience of the library with a secret chapel, the smell of coal fireplace with the sounds of river Teith outside the window adds up to truly unique feel. We will definitely be back...

Great starters, especially chicken liver parfait and bread with butter. Mains were ok, but dry chicken (overcooked) and small portion of lamb with no seasoning. I recommend you crushed salt as an improvement for customers.

We discovered Roman Camp by accident as we were wandering around Callender. We went for drink and wandered the gardens by a beautiful stream. Although the gardens could use a bit of work, they are still stunning. The dinner was exceptional and after dinner drinks in the drawing room as the sun set was a great way to end the meal. New manager, Gordon Minnes, (2 days in!) was particularly attentive and made excellent recommendations. I strongly recommend the restaurant (we did not stay at hotel - no availaibility).

Le service est pompeux et le menu est cher mais le Chef fait l'effort de proposer un accommodement des plats qui diffère de ce que l'on rencontre habituellement, avec succès.

What a gem this place is. The setting alone on the banks of the Teith river is relaxing but the hotel management and staff deserve credit, from the ambience of the dining areas and the quality of service which is outstanding and then to the creative and beautifully presented food. We have dined here a few times now and it always impresses. Firstly relaxing in the lounge or bar areas where you are served drinks and canapes while you peruse the menu for the day. Once your order is taken, you are led to your table when you food is ready to be served. The beautiful table settings are formal yet elegant, with a burning fire setting the scene. The little touches are appreciated such as the chef's palate cleansers between courses. Last night we tried the ravioli with spinach and ricotta before the veal mains which was delicious. Desserts are always a treat too and not to be missed. We are so glad we discovered this gem of a restaurant in the Trossachs.

Roman Camp does terrific lunches. Top quality food, beautifully prepared and presented, with excellent service. All of this for £30! It's amazing. If I lived in Callander I would eat lunch there every other day.

We stumbled upon this place by accident. On our way from Edinburgh to Glencoe and decided we needed a lunch break. Son used GPS to find the nearest place, which was Roman Camp. We were greeted by peacocks and eventually found our way to the restaurant. We were seated in a cute room (conservatory?) with windows overlooking the garden. It was quiet and different since we were sitting on sofas and stuffed chairs. We had sandwiches and ciders and chatted. It was cozy and nice. Everyone enjoyed it. After we finished, we explored the lovely grounds and saw more peacocks before resuming our drive. A lovely break. The hotel seems a magical place for a wedding. Would definitely stay there if given the opportunity.

We had a great evening meal for 4. We started by having drinks in the lounge looking out over the river, where we were also served some canapés. The decor feels like you have stepped back in time to great Scottish country house, with open fires and a homely feel. We had a walk around the gardens before our meal, make sure you allow time for this as you don't want to miss them.

The tasting menu was excellent and included vegetarian alternatives. Several memorable dishes and the hake was outstanding. Service was impeccable - rather formal but will make it feel special if you like being pampered. Your napkin will be placed on your lap and the wine poured for you. We were started off with aperitifs and canapés in the lounge and then led through to our lovely table in the dining room which looked absolutely spectacular.

The Clachan provided a fabulous night out for a family occasion. The service was excellent, the atmosphere was perfect and the food was exceptionally good and well priced. From start to finish we were very well looked after by polite attentive staff and it looked like everyone in the restaurant was having a great evening also. Everyone at our table enjoyed a great night. Well done all.
