Rock & Malt in Cardiff

I went into rock and malt asked about their certificate for allergies etc.. all they could say it's been passed and showed certificate. No date time stamp or no official stamp? A bit alarming considering , certificate was an online one and anyone could print this kind off. Well over priced in shop also. Looked clean enough but very small portion, a side plate of chips for over £4. I dint get the reviews tbh and the safety issue doesn't seem right to me. Anyone can post anything off Internet.

One of the best fish and chips I've had in years . Proper chips and the batter on the fish was perfection ! Really friendly staff . Definitely recommend trying this place out !

Fish and chips the batter was soggy. Madras chicken curry rice and chips the curry sauce had no taste whatsoever was like flavored water and the rice was very wet. Overall very disappointed.

This is your typical chippy. Wonderful fish and chips. They also have an assortment of other fried goodies that look really tasty. They have canned drinks you can get from the fridge. The space is small and not meant to eat there, but the food is typically made fresh and you don't have to wait long. Great place to stop in and grab some food.

Completely undercooked Noticed the chips being wrapped looked white. Asked about this and staff were very defensive when replying “it’s the quality palm oil, when you’ve cooked as many chips as we have…” Utter crap. Could have made mash with them

Went here as the reviews were mixed but what a mistake . Ordered Chips , pie Battered Sausage and madras sauce. The chips are a huge selection of bits and ends which were tasteless. The sausage very dry and has been under the heater for hours , I didn’t take the risk of eating I . The madras sauce was tasteless and would be ideal for the typical drunk who doesn’t know what madras is. The shop has a snazzy name but inside is the opposite, cheap looking setup from the last era. The pie was ok , at the end of the day they don’t make them simply microwaved it. Look at my image if you don’t believe the quality. It annoys me these fish shops open up and they think they can produce quality food , sorry but the owners need to learn how to cook. To add more to this failed chip shop they have a very low rating 2.

We visited not long after opening. I ordered Cod Bites and chips. A big portion of cod bite nice fish and chips well worth the few minutes wait to cook an improvement on last time.

I have been going to this hidden gem for a while now and have always been pleasantly surprised by the quality of not only the food but the service. My usual order is there renowned fish and chips that everyone seems to love and you would understand why once you try it. The chips are tasty and fresh in a decent sized portion. The cod is just a treat. Always well cooked to order, looks appetising and keeps me and the misses full and only takes around 7 minutes which goes by fast talking to the polite chap at the counter. Other than the fish and chips the chicken breast is a go to and try it with the tartar sauce you won’t regret it. Overall, lovely people lovely food and simply a local safe haven that I know I can rely on when I can’t be bothered to cook.

Terrible - attitude of chap frying food when asked how long my order might be! Thought he wanted to fight me And who the heck in a fish and chip shop cooks to order! Fish was oily and flabby chips peas were nice , never darken their doors again .

Ordered “chicken curry off the bone” it tasted like frozen chicken that had just been cut up. The curry sauce was tasteless. Chips were soggy. Fish was dripping with oil. Disappointed as I’d heard that this was a great place for food. Price was okay and the food was hot upon arrival.

Friendly staff, massive portion size, & tasty super-crispy fish. Chips a bit under cooked, but not enough to spoil the experience of a the meal. Would visit this spot again without hesitation.

The service was good considering it was fairly busy. I wouldn't recommend this place if you're getting fish. Re fried and it smelt of old oil all went in the bin. Chips were decent and portion sizes are decent but i can't justify paying for re heated re fried fish that's sat under a heat lamp.

Had fish and chips, fish was cooked to order, huge, crispy and beautifully flaky! Chips were well cooked, I like the vinegar from the spray bottle, it gives a nice even covering. The portion overall was huge for 1, I would suggest it would easily feed 2, I had to eat mine in 2 sittings! Will definitely be going back

Surprisingly fast delivery tasted delicious

Order via Deliveroo Over an hour late. Gave plenty of excuses Kids hungry. First time I was willing to try these people, never again. Save your money Owner told me never to order from them again after I caught him out lying. Pathetic. He flagged up the new 20mph speed limit in Wales as being one of the many reasons my order was delayed, comical! Forced to give 1 star - more like minus 10

Visited twice last week while in Cardiff. First visited on Wednesday was good. Short queue cod and chips cooked fresh I don't mind waiting. Battered sausage and chips all coming to £12.90 I didnt think was bad for size of fish. Very fresh and tasty. Second visit on Friday was a mistake. Many people and delivery bikes waiting outside. We went in and ordered straight away and was told 25 minutes. We waited outside. At 30 minutes and many delivery people later we went in to ask whats going on? We witnessed them serving the delivery people first. Then we find our order had been wrapped ready and left in the hot cabinet. We had Cod bites and chips and sausage and chips. The poor guy serving was being harassed by too many delivery people and couldnt manage the orders in order. Real shame it ruined our food. The chips were not fresh tasting and the cod bite batter was chewy. If I went again only because of location I would defiantly choose the right time or stand at the counter and not outside.

I ordered a Cod supper which when it arrived perfectly on time as usual but this supper should have included mushy peas and tartar both of which were missing. I can excuse a mistake this time ,and hope when I order next time which I will do the order will be correct.

I came back here as the first time food was OK i was quite impressed but When you paying for a service you expect it to be cooked well and fresh the chips looked like they been put in the fridge and re-cooked they were rank and the sausage and batter wasn't cooked inside and the batter was all soft so there for it's put me off coming back there was 2 young boys today don't know if they can cook tbh

I’ve tried to like this place but it’s not possible. Below average food, above average prices, unhelpful and unfriendly service, long waits, minimum card spends and you have to wait outside as it’s too small. Much better fish and chips a 5 minute walk down the road - Personal Cardiff favourites though are Fintans, Youngers or Yans.

I live locally and have never been a person who likes curry but then I tried a chip with curry on from my partners plate and then loved there curry ate there for years then went there thinking he had new staff and order food got home and it was vile curry was a dirty dark orange colour and food swimming in grease binned the lot none of us liked it then found top Dec by Vicki Park there close to what rock and malts food use to be go there sadly this is no longer the passion in the food just some one making a quick buck serving grime

Oh Dear If only they weren't so rude & miserable I'd come here more often

2nd visit & both times server so rude & miserable it put me off my chips. It takes nothing to be polite especially if taking money off a customer. Got told he didn't need me when I suggested manners don't take much

I'm local & have been going to this chippy for years. But recently the food has gone terrible. I called in last night and bought a chicken curry off the bone. When I got home I wad amazed at what I saw, little white cubes (chicken)? and very little curry sauce. I also bought a chicken breast. They used to be huge. This one was like the size of a pigeons breast. I called in today and complained but the three men just shrugged their shoulders and mummbled "something "in their language. They were NOT interested atall. So I walked out and will NOT be going back. Such a pity.

Never really head to Cardiff, we did winter wonderland and my 4yr old daughter stated she wanted chips. Very specifically "from a chip shop" Very good food, staff are friendly, chips were very nice and my daughter wanted more

I've been a regular delivery customer for a couple of years ordering the same meal regularly, but the quality has significantly changed this year. Reading the last review a change in ownerhip might explain what's going on. Whilst the prices remain the same, the portion sizes aren't consistent anymore and the quality of products have deteriorated to the point that I've actually thrown some of it away. Thinking perhaps they'd been going through a difficult time I persevered for a while, but aside from the homemade sauce, my last order was again a poor quality disappointment. I've sadly stopped ordering deliveries from somewhere that used to be a favourite I could rely on. It's a false economy cutting costs by using cheaper products, they're losing valuable regular customers in the process.

Waited for half an hour for fish and chips for 2 people... a guy infront of us only ordered chips and was waiting for 25mins. When we eventually got to the front, the chips were white and obviously undercooked. The guy stated that they were white and looked soft because they were a "new type of potato". So we politely asked for a refund and were asked to wait outside and rudely put to the side. By this point after 60mins of being there and just pleading with the guy for the money back, we were told that it's been "cancelled" even though we didnt tap the card for the money back and were told that it's not possible to have a receipt for the refund. Spoken to my bank and they said that you cannot issue a refund without the card. So, the guy lied to us and effectively has stolen £20 from me without anything to show for it. On top of this, we were shouted at and spoken down to infront of 6 or 7 other customers.

They use cheap products and think people are stupid and won't be able to differentiate but will charge the same price as the previous owners who used quality products. Twice I've been recently and It got worse,they even chucked a couple of hairs with the hard chips' those day's are gone when people had no Idea or choice, now people will pay more and travel far for quality. This place has gone back to the day's of PETE'S PLAICE

I had been once before, got served right away. The food was fine, just standard chip shop chips. However I visited this evening and had a really bad experience. There was a queue outside, so I joined the queue. Another customer told me to go inside and order first, so I went in but was told by staff to wait outside, so I went back outside and rejoined the queue. After waiting for about 20 minutes, I was informed by another customer that I was supposed to order inside first, then join the queue after. I went inside, tried to get the attention of the staff member who just seemed irritated and like I was bothering him. He told me it was a 25 minute wait on food, so I left. There's no logic behind that queue system, no signage anywhere telling people to order inside first. I also have no idea why the wait times are so long there. The food is definitely not worth the wait, just average chip shop food with bad service and a bad attitude.

Best fish and chips I’ve had in Cardiff. Crispy batter, perfect chips, good portions. Never had any issues, foods always been fresh and tasty. Treat yourself to a bag of onion rings for the journey home. Absolutely banging.

We went on a Friday night and they had run out of fish (!) so we had scampi which was soggy and tasted strangely chemically - a bit like washing up liquid. The chips were also quite soggy and under seasoned. I wouldn't go back.

Locally I think these chips cannot be beaten . Lovely crispy fish , sausages are good , nice portion sizes , cardboard box not polystyrene which is nice so you don’t have to feel so bad- and of really course really friendly staff running the place that might be busy but a smile and a chat goes a long way ! Glad to have you so close. Come here around once a month and always good ! Keep it up !

Pedí una comida para mi familia y quedé completamente impresionado con la calidad de la comida. Todo estaba recién preparado, incluso las patatas fritas, y el pescado estaba lleno de sabor. Parece que usan ingredientes de calidad y realmente puedes sentir la diferencia. Toda la familia estuvo de acuerdo en que no hay un sabor grasiento que se obtiene de otras tiendas de chips. ¡Estamos muy contentos de vivir tan cerca, ya que definitivamente los usaremos más a menudo!

Really nice, quick and large portions

Siempre comí pescado el Viernes Santo, es una tradición que aún sigo, los amigos nos recomendaron la roca y la malta, así que decidimos intentarlo. Llegamos a eso de las 12. 30 hora del almuerzo.Tenía el bacalao y las papas fritas que mi esposo entró en la tienda mientras yo me quedaba en el auto. Esperaba un pescado fresco y encantador, pero en casa desenvolvía mi comida, que decepción. El bacalao era muy delgado y estaba muy seco. La mayor parte era comestible, ya que se pegaba a la masa y se quemaba, solo se podían comer los trozos medios y estaban secos. Si hubiera vivido lo suficientemente cerca, los habría devuelto. . Esta será nuestra última visita.

We have ordered from the Rock and Malt many times and have always been happy with our food. It has never disappointed and the service is usually good. However, tonight we ordered a ‘fish supper’ (cod and chips) only to find they had forgotten the chips. We then called them just to let them know we had not received any chips only to be told “We definitely put chips in the box”. Why would we be calling you if you had put chips in the box? No chips for us...Very disappointed by their response.

Es viernes por la noche, pescado y papas fritas para la cena.Llamé a Rock and Malt, he estado allí dos veces antes (solo durante el día) para comprar bacalao y papas fritas. Delicioso.Llamé por teléfono en mi orden:Abadejo grande y papas fritas, grandes guisantes y un pastel de pescado.Tiempo de espera 45 minutos. Soy paciente, hambriento y con ganas.En la colección, al ver una breve vista de mi pescado envuelto en la tienda, estoy un poco preocupado y lo compruebo preguntando "es un gran pescado y papas fritas, ¿no es así?" Él confirmó que era.En casa desenvuelvo mi comida para llevar, mis preocupaciones están confirmadas, el pez se ve pequeño, triste y flácido.Me siento aún más triste cuando veo dentro de la capa un poco parcheada de (pronto voy a probar) de color beige, la mezcla suave, mi abadejo de media pinta tiene su piel puesta.No he tenido eglefino de una tienda de chips muchas veces antes y ciertamente y afortunadamente no con su piel antes.Llamo a Rock y Malt para decirles que me decepcionó un poco esto.El hombre procede a decirme que "todos aquí saben que su abadejo viene con su piel puesta" (Me hice una nota para hacer un par de llamadas a amigos más tarde, para ver si sabían sobre este tema de la piel de abadejo).Habiendo comido aquí solo dos veces y ninguna vez un abadejo, "¿cómo podría saber eso"?
