Robertson's chips away in Scarborough

Good price for a quick takeaway..we enjoyed the tarter & curry sauces just wish the chips were a little crisper, great location!

Was told it shuts at 7, got here at 6 for gluten free fish and chips to be told it was closed at 6pm.

Finally a place in Whitby that doesn't fry in beef dripping! Called in today for a large tray of chips, a very generous portion that me and partner couldn't even finish between us 😅. The chips were perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious, this will be our go-to place from now on whenever we're visiting 😋

Staff were polite and welcoming, but the food was probably the worst fish and chips I have ever had. Chips were undercooked, fish was rubbery, curry sauce was lacking. The only redeeming factor was a battered sausage, but that's not hard to get right. Probably the worst chip shop in Whitby, had better fish in the middle of the country.

Called today from Leeds. I'm not sure if it's because it was the start of the day but it wasn't the best . It wasn't the best quality I expected as I've been here before. Friendly enough people serving though. I do an honest review of many places I visit as you can see in my previous reviews from all over the world so maybe they need to listen to some of the comments people leave. I would've returned but was on a tight schedule to my next destination. I'm sure it was just an off day. It happens

Not the best chips greasey snd soggy and some burnt yet still soggy. Sausage was tasty but batter again soggy

Not bad food but there was an atmosphere and the yound lad serving had a bad attitude, sorry i like my service with a smile and politeness considering what im paying

Stopped off one night for gish and chips the young lad serving was rude, he slammed the mushy peas on the counter with my order and said theres the peas he also kept staring, portion size looked small but proved me wrong as it was filling

Overall , good food , fresh fish and vegan / halal friendly which suits me . Well done for catering for us vegans and halal friendly guys .

Very disappointed with service on Saturday December 2nd definitely will not be returning which is a shame as we visit Whitby regularly and often use fish & chip shop Saturday ordered fish Patie the Young Kid is very lucky I did not take his attitude and service further it's a wonder still in business definitely need some customer service training Without customers no job ! Her threw fish patie into box (bare hands ) when questioned about became abusive Can't comment on food didn't buy it after incident

On a visit to Whitby and decided that I’d try a traditional Fish & Chip shop instead of heading to the tourist spots. Ordered Cod and Chips with the fish being cooked to order. The guys behind the counter were friendly and happy. Good portion of chips and the fish was absolutely delicious, flaked beautifully and tasted fresh. A decent price at £10 so no complaints from me. Definitely recommend this Chippy.

We stopped here for lunch, a quick and easy food stop as not often at Whitby, service wasn't the best from two younger males, attitude could've been better since they're are the face of the chip shop. Size portions weren't ideal for the price. But other than that it tasted good.

NOT HALAL COOKED IN SAME OIL WITH OTHER MEAT PRODUCTS WHICH COULD BE BEEF, CHICKEN and battered sausages ETC. NO GOOD FOR HINDU DIET AS WELL Waited in queue for half and hour (30 minutes)when I got to ordering I requested as advertised on shop wall to ask if you required fish and chips to be cooked in vegetable oil and also ask for it to be cooked separately from meat products. The young lad asked the man with stubble who informed me that WE NO LONGER CATER FOR SEPARATELY COOKED IN VEGETABLE OIL. I pointed out that it is written and if you don't do it then should be removed. Didn't get apologies apart from a smirk. Very disappointed with customer service. We have eaten here in the past, actually our first positive review was 5 years ago. We deleted review due to current issues. Will let everyone know that it has changed policy. Trading standards need to know. PAPAS FISH AND CHIPS ACROSS THE ROAD FROM ROBERTSON. FRY IN VEGETABLE OIL AND COOK SEPARATELY. WE ENJOYED COD AND CHIPS AND STAFF VERY FRIENDLY AND SERVICE WITH A SMILE.

I never had fish and and chips so greasy. And yes, please look at how to make deep fried food less greasy and chips crispy. I would appreciate that. Thank you Update: I'm sorry for not returning, but I'm just a craven tourist that was hungry and in need to get his bus. But I promise to come back next year (if I am still agile enough) to get my money back. And maybe you should try your food from time to time so you know what you are talking about. How are people giving this place one star. Easily the best chip shop around here and beats The Magpie in a month of Sundays. When you come to Whitby everyone recommends the Magpie... well that'll change with this place if they carry on the same way with their food and the fella behind the counter just cheers up a wee bit he seemed a bit like we was an inconvenience but can understand these days happen. Brilliant menu and even cater for celiac's with their gluten free menu. The chips were above and beyond anywhere else and the popcorn chicken is a must! The prices are the best I've seen for value I'd say in the UK. I'm a southerner who travels alot and this is easily one of the best.

Absolutely awful. Extremely rude front of house member. I've never had fish and and chips so greasy, completely inedible. Unfortunately we couldn't go back to give feedback as we were going home the next day.

We chose Robertson's because of the Vegan menu. The vegan sausage wasn't what we were expecting, being more of a battered bubble and squeak rather than a meat substitute, however they made a pleasant change and were delicious. Absolutely loved the pea fritter which is a battered ball of mushy peas. Chips were great too although portion size was on the small side, but probably enough to be fair. My only negative is that it was quite expensive in my opinion. £4 for a pea fritter or 2 small vegetable sausages seems excessive to me. Thoroughly enjoyed the food though.

I asked the gentleman at the counter how they fried their fish. He was very honest with me and told me fish and the meat sausages were fried in the same oil. How does class as vegetarian/ halal. My mind boggles.

Thanks to Mr Khan. Who reviewed that this is occasionally halal. This mean not suitable at all for halal dietary. I am planning to visit whitby this week. But I will not buy fish and chips from here. If anyone any quality halal fish and chips in whitby let me know. Thanks

Quick Heads up for Muslims and anyone else. UNFORTUNATELY this place does not cater For Halal after confirmation from them they fry everything, everything in the same oil fish/sausages everythin. Don't usually ever leave reviews, jus thought this may help others. For Robertsons if you see this would suggest it'd be great if you were able to cater for Muslims and be able to fry their orders separately in separate oil.. just a word of advice.

Whatever you do do not order the vegan battered sausage :(! It seems really silly with how many vegan sausages there are at supermarkets they can't just use a proper vegan sausage, instead it's some strange mashed together onion mixture that tastes of nothing unfortunately and they are not cheap! I felt a bit misled. A chip shop near me in Derbyshire does the same vegan options and they use Linda McCartney sausages and it's cheaper. You have so many to choose from? I just don't unferstand, I thought they might be trying to put people off vegan food it was that bad lol! However the pea fritter and chips were lovely :)

The fish was well fried BUT, the fries were awful. It felt like eating raw potatoes. I recommend only fish.

Friendly staff, wide choice on menu & all cooked to order. Vegetarian menu, can be cooked in oil(as compared to beef dripping).

Never again!!! Worst fish and chips I’ve ever had!! Fish and chips where well under cooked, batter had no flavour and service was okay until my food was ready and he was clearly upset that I had asked for the battered mars bar in a box!!!! Will not be back and I’m certain anyone with taste buds won’t return here again!!!!

We went to this Halal fish n chips in Whitby after recommendation from a friend as halal food is hard to find sometimes at a seaside. We were Disappointed with the portion size. It was more of a kiddies portion with Just a few chips. For the price we were not satisfied with what we received. Not value for money at all when compared to the one Wev had in Scarborough and St Anne’s.

Worse fish on the coast. Very small fish. Batter pale and undercooked. Vinegar was more water than vinegar. Avoid. there are loads of fish shops around non can be as bad as Chips Away pricey too.

Good Chip Ship, sit in or take away, reasonably priced when I was last in years ago compared to others. reommended.

Google and Facebook stated it was open on Saturday dinnertime. We went specially as they have a vegan menu to find it closed. No signs in the window etc.

Really pleased with this. Made to order gluten free at a good price. Quality was excellent, some of the best chips I've had from a chippy.

Lovely friendly service, we're an awkward bunch with vegans and dairy free people, but they have very clear menus with gluten free and vegan options and we're happy to answer any questions. The batter is dairy free and they cook in veg oil, this is hard to find in whitby! This will be our go-to chippy when in the area from now on.

Even before I could complete , the gentleman on the counter knew we were looking for halal option. Got out fish and chips, veg sausage fried seperately in veg oil. Now coming to the quality, both our orders were fresh, super crisp and superbly fried. Was surprised by the quality and taste of curry sauce which was spot on. Highly recommended if you are looking for vegan, vegetarian, halal. Plus the portions were superb, good value for money .

Best gluten free fish and chips I have ever had! Sometimes when you get gf it's a different colour batter and no crunch but these were amazing. Gluten free not fun free or tasteless. Oh and the gluten eaters said theirs was lovely too!

We were able to get gluten free fish and chips for our coeliac daughter. Lots more gf food on the menu. The food was delicious, hot and very light non greasy batter. Great understanding of cross-contamination so we felt safe using this chippy. Makes such a difference to our daughter as she often feels left out on holidays and she was able to have the full Whitby experience!

Great place to eat for EVERYONE...not just those who can't eat fried food if it isn't in beef dripping! Sadly quite rare in our coastal towns! Looked like a cracking meat selection, all done in veg oil and I believe they have vegan options too. Staff are lovely and very speedy too 🙂

I only had chips and curry sauce, but it was belting. Nice fluffy chips, and a curry sauce like I've never tasted before 🤤

Smallest portion of fish and chips we have ever had from a fish and chip shop. Disappointed, we did mention the portion size while we were served them.

Friendly service, but the food was a big disappointment. The chips were underdone, the batter on the haddock was soggy, the curry sauce was thin and tasted like beef stock with curry powder (it probably was), and the whitebait portion was pitiful. It's a shame, but I wouldn't recommend this place when there are so many other good chippys in town.

It’s probably been around 10 years since I’ve had a proper meal from a fish and chip shop as they aren’t usually vegan friendly. I found this place on Happy Cow while camping at Whitby and it was absolutely amazing. Will definitely be returning whenever we come back to Whitby to try more of the vegan menu. Thanks guys!

Not great. We ordered the cheese burger which was flat and a little bland. A big burger bun, but with no onions and just a little grated cheese. The chips were not the best quality portion size was small.

Really enjoyed our meal from here. So much so we returned for another! My wife is vegetarian and had chips, halloumi & pineapple. I had chips & little bits of fish. Very tasty & well cooked. They have separate vegetarian & vegan menus. Staff are friendly & there’s double yellow line parking for Blue Badge holders right outside. It’s not expensive. Definitely recommend & will return.

Just been to stay in Whitby and without doubt, these are the best fish and chips. They also make their own tartare sauce which is the best ever. Well worth it.

I have been here for years instead of going to the magpie, I always get the giant cod and chips, which have been good in the past BUT, I went and asked for my big cod and chips, he asked the other lad in there if they had any huge cod left, his answer was yes and they served us, excitedly we went back to our camper where we opened and to my shock it was horrendous the cod was smaller than a normal fish and very very thin. At a cost of £30 for me and my partner. I will never go there again, very very dissatisfied and disappointed after travelling 4 hours just to have my fish and chips from there😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Having lived in Whitby, but now a frequent visitor and lover of a chip shop, I’ve tried ‘em all in Whitby. The legendary Magpie is great but it’s overpriced for what you get. My most recent visit was to Chips Away - Robertson’s Chip Shop - the green one over the bridge and on the left (see image). Part take away and part restaurant it caters for all and when I say all, I mean all … it’s got a gluten free menu and a vegan menu (see image). Being vegans, it was a nice surprise - the food was great and the portions huge. Ask for scraps too, big ones here.

So glad we found this place, it’s the only vegetarian/vegan chips we could find in Whitby and they were really tasty. Loads of good vegan options as well, the pea fritter was amazing!

vegan options which is fab and a rarity where I live

I was struggling to find a vegetarian/vegan place to eat today in Whitby. Luckily I came across this place who saved my stomach and my lunch! There's a lot of choice (honestly I couldn't decide what to eat, I wanted to try everything!) The food tasted amazing and it was clearly homemade. The quality was good compared to the price and the portion. Highly recommended!

Totally tasteless (realised after, this is due to them being cooked in Veg oil & not beef dripping like many others in the area) Soft not crispy (more like oven chips). If I’d have been closer (0.3 miles away on beach) I’d have taken them back. Try elsewhere.

Fabulous place to get fantastic sea food and other pieces to peck as well. Its a takeaway only... but not be missed at any cost if you are visiting Whitby.

Good for vegetarians, and portions are decent size. Price for the quality could be better, but the location is good. You have to pay extra for the sauces, and in my opinion gravy sauce is not the greatest.

Only place we could find in Whitby that offers fish and chips fried in vegetable oil and not dripping! Fish was cooked perfectly and the portion was generous. The name has changed and there is no longer the option for dine in but we took our meals out and enjoyed it in the sun.

They have a very good range of fried food including a large selection of battered chocolate bars! They use vegetable oil not dripping for those vegetarians out there struggling to find a suitable chippy in Whitby.

My partner and I are up for the week and after today's activities we needed feeding. After a few attempts to find somewhere to park, I finally managed to get my order in.
