They really enjoyed stroking the animals. Thank you so much

Popped in for dinner with my family, We was quickly seated even though they was busy, When ordering the meal we had to check to see if they did gluten free so I spoke to Vicki and she got the chef out to show us that is was indeed gluten free, The meal was lovely and well presented and of course the gluten free meal was excellent, Would deffo recommend !!! Great for family's as there are animals there too.

We used the function room for a wake for my dads passing. Vicky was very accomodating and helpful. The buffet and everything was sorted over a phone call and a couple of emails with regards our families choices. The room was large enough for all of us, a speaker was provided with bluetooth to allow us our own choice of music. The food was set out ready with tea and coffee also set out ready for us. The buffet comprised of fresh sandwiches, cakes and lots of other snacky food all of which had been freshly prepared for us. Massive thanks for looking after us. We will be back to try your menu!

absolutely disgusting. Iv work here for two days. And the kitchen is filthy. No food and hygiene has been put in place inside this kitchen. The chef obviously doesn't know about food cross contamination. The bacteria in this kitchen is awful. dusty and greasy. Not once have i seen him wash his hands. The food is precooked and then thrown back into a duty chip fryer. I wouldn't recommend this job to anyone who has high standards. I wouldn't even give this a one star. . .

Really lovely old pub, lovely low beams. Just had a lovely roast dinner here with my husband and little boy. Cane out piping hot, which was fantastic and the ingredients were lovely. Also had a prawn cocktails and pate to start. 2 course for £15.95, was a bargain. Lovely ladies who served us, and the owner was very friendly. This made up for my disastrous Mothe Day last week. Will definitely be returning, with more family who live in the area.

Libby and Maxine were amazing from the get go , from initial banter to quick and friendly service , u couldn’t feel more comfortable at this place. I’ve always wanted to stop here for years but never did ,,, excellent selection of drinks , beers, free / spacious car park. unfortunately I can’t tell u about the food just because I haven’t tried it, but by judging about the prices / friendliness of staff / small pub with big garden and play area for the little ones , I can only imagine good things and it will be worth to give it a try in the future …. BUT so far all the staff have been really friendly and welcoming & I can only bash my head for not stopping here before !!! Putting it in easy words , just pop in have a drink or two and u will see exactly what I mean. …… and I’m not bragging about it but I use to be in the hotel Industry before. An Excellent place by all means with truly genuine great staff and for I can gather good costumers too. … u even get a loyalty card !!! And it’s not a coffee costa, Nero or Starbucks what we are talking about here !! 5 stars. Xx

I'm absolutely gobsmacked at how this pub is still running. i've never been so shocked in my life, most of the staff are rude and aggressive and ignore you. the lady manager looks lost and off her head. calls her customers insulting names, which is disgraceful... supposed to be a friendly family pub. no definitely not a family friendly pub just seems like a druggy place. i'm never returning to this pub again, i will definitely be reporting this to someone much higher. this pub should be CLOSED.. i really am disgraced in the way these people treat customers.

me and my husband are new to this area and we’re out on a walk on Sunday and walked past a pub that we thought was a very nice pub how wrong can you be we only stayed for one drink as when we walked in there was a little man screaming at a Young girl . now I take it he must’ve been the owner and she was one of the staff he carried on in front of everyone screaming at the girl and sacked her on the spot . as we left the girl was outside in tears two other women tried to comfort the young girl I would’ve normally have said something because I was absolutely disgusted of the behaviour of this man but the way he looked and his behaviour he was obviously drunk? me and my husband have previously owned our own businesses and have never once spoken to any of her staff and work colleagues in this manner . absolutely disgusted and will not be back .

We went to this pub today. From the outside it looked very nice, but as we found out looks are deceiving! It was quite cold and wet today, so walked into the bar at 1pm ish and asked if they did hot drinks (as they boast it's a family pub). I was told "no I can't !" No explanation as to why and nothing else was said. In the mean time my family were in the beer garden waiting. The garden has some lovely animals to see. There is also a climbing frame, but sadly due to the amount of dog faeces on the grass it was total unacceptable for anyone to walk or play out there. My child ran through 1 lot before we even saw. Absolutely disgusting! As no staff had obviously been out to check the grounds before opening. The pub smelt of stale beer and needs a revamp. Would not go here again!

Well I went with my sister to review this pub and was told that the new owners only took over in October. We checked the room in which the funeral wake was to be held and was told that it would cleaned and cleared. No such luck on the day of the funeral when we arrived for the wake which was a couple of days ago on 27th April,2022 there was still much clutter and a hoover left on show at a crane type machine for kids. Well we paid £10.00per head for food and drinks extra of course were payable at bar so £500.00 for buffet and what was received was a couple of plates of sandwiches, a bag or two of frozen mini sausage rolls cooked of course and potato salad no serving spoons and shop bought sliced cherry cake and Madeira cake. I was not impressed. We were told they’d provide hot sausage rolls not mini, chicken drumsticks and wings and quiche. None of which was provided. I mentioned to my nephew who hand to settle the bill and said to him to ask what actually happened to what we been told. He mention to my sister the widow and she just said let it go. Well I’m not prepared to let it go. Hence this review. Please save your money and go elsewhere. I was disgusted as to what we received for £500 was nothing more than a kiddies tea party and if the food come to more than £40.00 I’d be surprised!! Well definitely not impressed at all - won’t use that pub again, , not even for a drink.

I left a really good review a couple of months ago and have been half a dozen times since and its very hit and miss so I am sad to post this bad review as I like to support our locals. Last visit Airshow Thursday around 7.30pm - Ran out of eggs and could only do 3 big burger meals so I opted for chicken curry. Platter came, no dough balls or onion rings and only a few chips and what was there had been incinerated waitress embarrased and said we would not be charged for it.. We were then told after 30 mins that they only had 3 burgers not 3 burger meals would we like the extra burger replaced with a chicken breast, we said ok but did'nt realise it was one chicken breast between us! Sorry excuse for 'The Big One' burger burnt, cube of chicken on top with limp lettece and a slice of tomato, no onion rings it was awful. Curry had 3 squares of chicken in a cup of soup, bhajis incinerated looked like lumps of coal - It looked like something a child whos just learning to cook would make out of leftovers and we did'nt want it no matter how hungry, so we refused to pay and asked for the manager. They asked us to return the next day to make a complaint but I did'nt have the time and don't see why I should. They took my name and number but I 've heard nothing back. Such a shame because when the chef is there its great, if someone could give me a copy of his rota I'd come again but I don't have the time or patience * Note to management - you must have thrown away £80 worth on our one meal, would'nt it be better to pay a chef for a shift?

I had roast pork and the usual vegetables, my wife had the nut roast which she described as awful and apart from the fist piece she ate no more of it, the vegetables were so overdone that we felt that they could be sucked through the gaps in our teeth, the Roast potatoes? seemed as though they were actually deep fried an then left to go soft, the pork would have been pretty good to repair a hole in a shoe.

The waitresses were friendly. The starters came out at different times. All finished while mine was still to arrive which wasn't worth waiting for save for the fresh bread I would have gone hungry. Despite asking about availability of Sunday roasts, after placing our order were told several were unavailable and new choices needed. Two meals out of eight came out without sauces option or gravy and waited ten minutes for gravy and hence dinner cold. The vegetables were either raw or microwaved to obliteration. The rib beef looked okay but clearly had been reheated whilst the veg was cold. The pork option was edible. When I received my order it was a nut roast when I ordered the turkey which returned to the kitchen and promptly came back with nuked (microwaved turkey hot but dry). Uncooked broccoli and cabbage, grey carrots and thick gravy. The smell was enough to put me off completely as the turkey had black charred remnants underneath it. I asked the waitress to take it away as it was not edible. She was very apologetic and suggested bringing the chef to the table for our feedback which we declined. We realise it was not the waitress' fault in any way and blame clearly lays with the kitchen staff who we heard from some shouting in the kitchen saying the chef had gone for a break when we had been waiting half an hour for the mains.Constructive criticism would be that the kitchen and waiting staff need to communicate speedily what is on or off the menu, that all meals should arrive at the table together and of course should be cooked and edible, not reheated in the microwave beyond recognition.I note that several reviewers liked the burgers and if they do that well maybe that is the menu to stick to but not for me. This restaurant experience completely spoiled my special birthday celebration.

The meal was in menu as served with fresh vegetables in there defence probably at some point as cheap frozen mush. When the beef came was on a large bone and lots of gristle and a pale grey absolutely terrible we sent one back as could not even cut it. They asked could they replace, so ordered fish and chips a safe bet we thought how wrong can you be a piece of crispy batter with a piece of fish from a goldfish as the actual fish was about this size. Starters were immense, a sharing board, three of us and we like our food, well mum and I do.. it was a struggle as we had to remember we had a main course to follow.. but the starter was so so tasty we managed it bar a few cheesy chips. Mains to follow were beautifully presented, mine on a wooden board (burger) very tasty and the lovely bar lady popped by regularly to see how we were doing... a struggle, in such a good way. The young chef popped out to clear our plates and ask how the meal was which was a lovely touch and came out and spoke to us after his shift about the menu etc, a lovely chap, and we wish him all the best, if he continues to produce such lovely, hot, filling dishes as we had today he is on to a winner. This pub is the bloodline of the traditional British pubs. Full of character! We had a hot sandwich and a drink. It was a very nice moment : great food, Ale was nice ( a few choice available), the staff was very welcoming. It was our first time but definitely not the last one: we need to try the dining area!

Myself and my husband have just returned from Sunday lunch Never complain but felt the need to express my disappointment can honestly say it was the worse roast dinner we've ever had The potatoes were baby potatoes baked in there skins that were black and so obviously been left in the oven for far to long so long in fact the middle of the potato had completely disintegrated . I had turkey and my husband had beef both were overcooked mine was burnt round edges and inedible . We then had dessert as we both obviously still hungry. My husband bit into his sticky toffee pudding and pulled out a large piece of plastic followed by two more smaller bits. We was going to inform the waiter but there appeared to be the only waiter and he was rushing between the bar and the restaurant and we did not want to cause a scene as it was clearly not his fault As I said I never complain as a rule but feel this couldn't go without reporting. I'm afraid it would take a lot of changes to happen here before myself or my husband would even consider returning here

Where to start.Firstly we walking into the pub to be greeted by empty glasses all over the place (the barman was busy)We thought we would have something nice to eat seen as we havent eaten here before, so after looking at the fairly good menu we placed our order.Over an hour later our meals arrived, Steak and ipa pie and a mixed grill, the pastry was so hard it was difficult to cut but didnt taste overly bad, but the mixed grill was something else, Came out looking lovely untill it came to eating it, the steak was so small and impossible to cut, had to pick it up like a burger and chew into it was tuff as old boots, the gammon and lamb chop where also the same, the 'chef' didnt once come out and ask if our meals where ok, went home still hungry. There as another table who also waited over an hour and wasnt overly impressed.Thought it was a good place to eat after hearing a few mixed reviews, but after trying it we will not be back untill we have heard different.

We ate here on the evening of 25th February 2017.It was a first time visit and we did read reviews. We decided that we would see for ourselves as there is a new manager and team in place so felt that we couldn't judge them on unfortunate events recently. We are pleased we did. The manager was very attentive. Our food was well prepared and presented. It was hot when it was served. The steaks were cooked to perfection and my fish and chips hit the spot perfectly. The men in the party had 3 courses and enjoyed it all. I would say - give them a try and judge for yourself - the new team deserve a chance. It would be lovely to see a few more diners in the place. We will definitely return.

Just had a very nice family meal, wife really enjoyed her chicken rarebit which was served with a nice selection of vegetables which made a change from chips,I had very nice gammon/bacon chops...very tasty.....sweets were also very nice....more people need to try the food here as very quiet at the moment which is probably due to problems under previous management...very nice, friendly staff....I also had sandwiches yesterday in bar which again were a good size and very tasty...my dad had the sausage and caramelised onion which he really enjoyed....recommend this pub as very smart inside and food good.

Food was terrible, overcooked and cold when it eventually arrived - customer service a joke - manager told us he was having staffing problems so had cooked our meals himself and felt he had done a good job - he told us he was not a chef and when we said that we should have been told there was no chef at the time of ordering our food - he had no answer to that - simply wanted our money and was not prepared to give us any compensation for a miserable evening (was waiting for food for over 1 and half hours) should have got up and walked when we had the chance. Only one other table in that night - they also complained - really bad - no exaggeration - it was a disgrace.

On a recommendation thought we'd try the Robert Burre for Sunday lunch - in fairness hadn't booked but the boards were outside advertising Sunday lunch - sadly that wasn't the case. No one at the bar, walked round to the restaurant , empty tables and not the slightest smell of food being cooked . Appreciate if you haven't got the bookings why employ a cook and buy in the food - but in that case don't advertise it, doesn't help your reputation which is what a local pub would rely on. Found a pub down the road which served a great lunch, Robert Burre's loss

Read the previous reviews and to be fair we wasn't expecting anything to rave about! How wrong we were. Firstly the pub restaurant has been done up lovely, very cosy but also modern . The manager took our orders and was helpfull with our choices and took the time to tell us the history of the pub which in itself was interesting . Our food was delicious, highly recommend the blue cheese and garlic mushrooms. The steak was cooked exactly as we asked and melted in the mouth. Excellent value for money. We will be visiting again and recommending our family and friends to visit.

We booked for lunch on Christmas day as a party of 10. When we arrived we were told that the chef had walked out and that they were 2 waitresses down. At one stage we were told that we may get some food, but after asking other diners who were unlucky enough to have eaten, they said the food was awful so we asked to see the manager. He confirmed there was no chef and also that little preparation had been done in the kitchen for the day. Our meals were selected and paid for weeks in advance so surely it was not hard to prepare knowing what people had ordered. We then had to queue for a refund! Completely ruined our special day which we had all been looking forward to for weeks. It was a complete shambles and too late to go anywhere else.

We booked to have our Christmas day meal here...The manager were very good especially as during a busy time, some staff members decided to do a 'walk out' Reasons were not given...However, under a lot of stress, the remaining staff did a brilliant job to make sure the remaining customers did not suffer...We were treated like VIIPs, with complimentary drinks, and a very enjoyable 3 course meal.. Feel for the people that left to go elsewhere, as we were treated exceptional well. Thank you staff of Robert Burr, you were fantastic.. June & Trevor Phillips

This was our second time here since it's been refurbished, the first time the meal and service was perfect.. this time however although the room was warm and inviting, the meal wasn't.. Both my son and my meal were returned for different reasons. I don't like leaving a bad review, but the meal was so different from the first time, it was a big let down..and it certainly wasn't enjoyable.

I may add the Chocolate orange Pudding was Amazing We then continued the night with a disco which was great. All in all the Service, Staff, Ambience and Food made the start of our Christmas a Cracker!!Thank you Mike and Team we will be returning Very Soon.

Beef over done, pork over done, FROZEN ROAST POTATOES! If you can roast a spud, get out of the kitchen! gravy bisto, veg.. over cooked an frozen, I don't understand it... place looks great yet rubbish food, service shocking. Never going back, An charge me £9.45 for it! Yet I saw the chefs wondering around the bar and restaurant, If they spent more time in the kitchen the food would be better!

What a lovely surprise visit this was, having undergone a refurbishment it was warm, cosy and service was outstanding. The meal looked and tasted home cooked, even the ice cream appeared to be homemade, what a lovely change to have a meal like one would expect from home and to really enjoy it just as much, the roast potatoes were to die for, light and fluffy on the inside yet not hard on the outside just perfect, my husband had the roast beef which was ample two thick slices and my son had turkey, again two thick slices, I had the roast pork, which was a little over cooked but still was very nice.. everything was piping hot, even the plates.. we were brought extra jugs of gravy at no extra charge and extra veg on a side plate. First class service a perfect meal well done, the first place in a long time which knows how food should be cooked. Will defiantly be visiting again. Thank you.

We've been coming here for years but not since the recent revamp. We phoned up to book a table in advance and the lady on the end was very professional and gave us the time we requested. The restaurant was heated (which is always a concern on a cold evening), clean and very well decorated. The staff were very friendly and there was plenty to choose from on the menu. The food was very well cooked and enjoyable and the prices were reasonable. Looking forward to return again soon.

We visited on a Friday evening having heard good things. However we we rather disappointed. The food lacked lustre and was rather average. The steak pie was ok but the accompanying gravy was cold and the mash very dry and bitter. The doombar battered cod was uninspiring and we have had better in other venues for a much lower price. Sadly we although we live locally we won't be returning.

This pub has under gone a massive refurbishment from a tired needing a good spruce up to a tasteful pub. But O dear the money spent is huge yet if your in a manual chair getting in requires the following action. Get to the step lift the front chair upwards no tipping over the back!! Grab the side of the doorways and push shove pray your in well half way as your in the porch next the door in front of you open door best to bounce downwards do not turn your chair around going down backwards a hard brick wall to hit one head on if you tip backwards!!!Do not know if disabled toilets are installed as no signage should any human being ask in a pub full of people say excuse me do have a disabled toilet? If your in a power chair go right round to the side staff should open the restaurant doors to get in. So am I being unfair NO

Friendly staff, nicely done out inside.....BUT when does a Plougmans consist of limp lettuce drenched in olive oil making it so greasy, three small pieces of cheese, piccallilli and lovely small french stick/rolls. The rolls were gorgeous....BUT over £8 for this!!! Very over priced. I did check price with a bar staff who was going to get back to me but never did. Down right rude I say.

Tried the Lock and Barrel for lunch today after a long walk from Walton but due to the poor quality food, we will not be returning. I chose the burger which was extremely salty and seemed to have been made with very poor quality meat. I tried eating it but after a few mouthfuls, I couldn’t cope with the taste or texture and left most of my meal. My partner had the prawn linguini which he said was ok and contained plenty of prawns so I think he chose the better option. The table behind us also sent back their jacket potatoes as they were not hot. Despite several disgruntled customers, the staff remained pleasant and were extremely helpful and deducted the cost of my meal from our bill. They also offered the table behind us a free drink. Frinton has lots of eateries and based on our experience today, I would recommend trying one of those instead of the Lock and barrel.

Table table at Bowling Green is simply convenient. Sadly it lacks appeal in many respects. Their prices are reasonable but most definitely match the bland presentation and poor service. We chose to pop in as it was getting late following a hospital appointment. The service was painfully slow and may have been caused by understaffing. The meal, as mentioned was adequate, but totally lacked any presentation skill. Finally the decor and general ambience of the place remains tired and lacking in general upkeep. The decor is badly in need of TLC and the carpets are threadbare and sticky underfoot.
