Roast and Ground in Sutton

Precious owners were amazing but sad to say it’s gone downhill now it’s changed hands, both in food and service. The previous owners can now be found at lavender kitchen which is located on Banstead high street and it’s thriving. Same as roast and ground was but a bigger restaurant

Coffee morning was amazing at Roast Cafe. Staff was so polite, friendly well aware about allergies. I had my hot chocolate carefully checked if no nuts contains.

It saddens me to write this review. I have always loved R&G and it has been my 'go to place' since it has opened. The family that first owned it were superb, very polite and nothing was too much trouble. The gentleman that owned it after was a delight, the beef paninis were not as good but every single other item was up to the same high quality. Now R&G has changed hands for the third time and it is not the same. The first time I visited under the new ownership it was a struggle. The waiter could not understand what I was ordering. Despite the fact I was speaking clearly and pointing to what I wanted in the menu. The new owner cleared things up but I was left decidedly underwhelmed by the food (more expensive and stingy portions). I do like to give new establishments second chances as setting up shop can be difficult and there are always teething issues. However, the next time I visited was not much better. The waiter was friendly and clearly understood what I was trying to order but, again, the food was meh. The paninis were smaller, there was no salad, the filling was barely there and all this was more expensive to boot. My mission is now to find a new 'go to' cafe in the area as I have given up!

We had a lovely lunch at the Café. The full English breakfast was so delicious and very friendly staff to great and meet. The children were well impressed with free lollipops. Highly recommended to any family.

The cafe is under new management and feels very welcoming. Lovely set breakfast made my day. I would recommend to everyone to try. The experienced chef puts his heart and soul in his food.

Have visit once a year for past 4 years. Sadly the change of ownership has resulted in the whole experience not being very nice. Ordered poached eggs on toast... got 2 hot but over cooked eggs on BREAD. Not as good or quick as when the ladies ran it. Wont be visiting again....

Came with the family to have a bite to eat for lunch. Varied menu, something for everyone- so tasty. Customer service is second to nothing. Highly recommend the Pineapple, banana and coconut smoothie (number 12). Thank you.

This a great place for a amazing selection of coffees and food, toasties, panini ,home baked cakes and a great little meeting place or just to sit and chill ! Lovely and would recommend fully.

Great food all freshly made on site, Very nice smoothies. And also limited gluten free options with more to come as they have only been open about 2weeks. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful.

Been using roast and ground for about a year. Always been excellent. However it appears to have new owners and it’s no longer the same. Didn’t have the milkshake we wanted on the menu. Ordered two bacon sandwiches and what arrived was toasted brown bread that was so dry. The bacon looked like it was see through it was so thin. The staff were polite but the food was not good we will not be returning.

First time at this cafe. very nice clean cafe with great decor but the food was terrible. The meat wasn’t proper meat , everyone was complaining. Ordered an Oreo milkshake & it was like water so sent it back. Won’t be going again 😖

I tend to visit this place if I am not working ( that day) after Jummah Salah ( it’s Turkish owned and run) , or on a Saturday. The beef with chilli panini was very delicious , plus a bowl of chips as I was extra hungry, my friend had the same. The staff are attentive and friendly. It’s a reasonable price too/ about £6 for lunch with a soft drink

There’s a Very strange vibe there like a eerie feeling the staff look abit down on there luck the food isn’t saying much either and there’s a man in there openly smoking crack out of a pipe it’s more like a soup kitchen I think

ROAST AND GROUND is smack bang in the middle of a busy little village, the staff are always cheerful and welcoming theres a Bus Stop quite literally outside and ample seating inside. All in all does what it says with a smile.

This is one of my favourite places to eat food is great staff are always friendly and very welcoming the food is home cooked full of flavour a must visit if your in Carshalton and the price is great .

Just don't order off the kids menu. I ordered three kids meals. Just the normal kids processed food fried to an inch of it's life.I ordered a jacket potato. I didn't think I could be poisoned with a jacket potato. I went up to the counter to let them know I didn't want butter on it and witness her scoping out the middle of the potato because it was rotten and throwing it in the bin. She proceeded to prepare my potato. Thought nothing of it and threw cheese on top and served it up for me to eat!!! OMG.I made a polite nibble of my meal and having left 95% of it, they didn't even ask why I hadn't eaten my meal. I wish I had objected to paying - too polite to complain so I'm just warning others

Went here with friends. It was fairly quiet but got quite busy at lunch time. The food was nice and tasted fresh. Will definitely visit again.

The only place in the village that does drinkable coffee since Costa started serving dish water. The food was very tastey and good portion size. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Have been going to Roast&Ground since 2010. Small and friendly. The lovely staff are friendly and welcoming and always use my name. They take reservations as they are very busy during lunch times. Never had a bad meal in there. The coffee is always hot unlike Costa! And they have a wide range of home made food on offer. Highly recommend

Went for lunch to discover owners on holiday.Usual waitress there and watched her handle food with her bare hands (wearing rings)and then take the money. She consistently alternated between the two and didn't once wash her hands. Informed staff on leaving and certainly won't be returning there.

We haven’t been to roast and ground for quite some time. Called in for lunch with my daughter and we had a lovely meal sitting at the tables outside. Lasagne was delicious albeit quite difficult to eat as sitting in lots of sauce, daughter had the chicken grill which she thought was lovely. Lots more added to the menu since our last visit with a vast choice of breakfasts added. We will come back again and not leave it so long.

We tend to go to this place every few weeks or so for late lunch on Saturdays. The place is always packed and busy, owners and staff are friendly. They have a selections of paninis, baguettes, jacket potatoes and salad and also a few specials. Food is good and portions are decent, coffee is good, it's local and family run business. Thumps up!

We have decided to go to this place because of the advertising as having vegan options and organic coffee? We have decided to order drinks first as we have just met a friend we didn't see for many years. The waitress was so rude when we ask her if the chocolate on the tea was vegan, she made a bad face said she wouldn't not find out and had no way we could know it. She seemed quiet unhappy when we just order drinks and when we asked about vegan menus she was dismissed and seemed angry and pointed on the board falafel with humus, she didn't try to talk to us and offer or show the options they had. She seemed in hurry and upset we weren't ordering the easy to make fast things she is used to. When my friend asked for soya in her coffee she seemed to have an attitude. By then we were worried. My friend and son left to eat somewhere else. I stayed with my friend that I didn't see for a while trying to be polite as the male in the restaurant tried to be nice. The blond lady kept looking o our table with dissatisfaction, they asked us to change sits which we did, because my friend is not vegan I have decided to give a try and eat. The other staff member seemed not to know what vegan is, they ended up giving me baked potato with humus and red peppers which until then was vegan but they put pesto on it which is not vegan and salad cream with was not vegan. I felt really uncomfortable to be there and didn't leave because I didn't want to offend my friend that took us there. Really bad energy, it felt like the staff there is greed and only interested that you eat what is easy for them and get out of there as soon as possible. The blond waitress seemed desperate for money and angry with her job. I wondered later on if the staff outside is so rude imagine the people in the kitchen. It's just sad that people can be so greedy and hateful when working with food.

Friendly staff and great food and as the title says its the only place in the village that sells coffee that tastes like coffee. The food is also great

First experience of this cafe. Greeted, or rather not greeted by a man who would not allow us to sit where we wanted even though there were a number of tables empty. No explanation and fairly rude. Ordered two coffees which were good but it was noisy and uncomfortable compared to other cafés in the village. My friend's previous experience was that she was asked to move tables several times while eating her lunch which seems ridiculous. Not bad but certainly not good and unlikely to visit again. There seemed to be regular customers but unwelcoming to first time customers or if just having a coffee.

This is one of my favourite local lunch time spots, namely because the staff here are so attentive and eager to ensure that you have a great experience.The food is great: hearty portion sizes and a wide selection of fresh, high-quality products that are served up with a smile. The lunch menu is varied and reasonably priced. This place is also great for grabbing a coffee and a sneaky slice of one of the delicious home baked cakes. The apple pie is a slice of heaven! The only drawback to Roast and Ground is that due to its popularity, it can be crowded and noisy at times. It's a hit with mothers and their prams so if you're not a fan of toddlers and babies, avoid the late morning / lunch time rush!A wonderful place that has brought some much needed variety to Carshalton High Street!

A group of us meet every Thursday after Mass. I am not a regular but am always very impressed at the way the staff know exactly what each of the 8 regulars have. No need to order , their drinks and snacks are just brought to the table. Very relaxed atmosphere and I would much rather support independents like this one than the chains popping up everywhere.

We love Roast and Ground. The food is always excellent and pretty good value, plus the coffee is great and the whole team is friendly and welcoming. A hard-working business that deserves support.

A little gem in Carshalton Village. The food and service is fantastic. The staff are amazing. Lovely healthy breakfast available and the jacket potatoes are filling and delicious.

Went there for breakfast with my wife.Nothing really special about this place. Asking a fee for using a debit card to pay for a £20 bill. Really.......?

This cafe was at times so popular that it could be challenging to get a seat inside. The nearby chain cafe has shown the strength of this establishment is in the quality of the food and the personal service. Sure, the chain cafe is easier for groups of buggy users and disabled and provides additional needed capacity in the village. For coffee alone, the chain cafe perhaps has the edge; both establishments can be a bit noisy and 'busy' for a relaxing cuppa at peak times.

With strong competition from a large coffee shop chain, a pub & an all-day breakfast cafeRoast and Ground beat them hands down for food quality & variety. I particularly enjoy their omelettes with salad, & the dressing they use is particularly nice.

I come here regularly for breakfast and lunch and I have always had superb food and service. Today I tried the curry chicken wrap and can honestly say didn't think the food could get any better - superb. The coffees are excellent to so why go anywhere else :0)

We sat outside on a warming ish late summer lunchtime. Staff were very attentive and made us feel welcomed.the table was very wonkey causing our coffee to spill at every opportunity staff were happy to replace the saucer speedily. Our food 'Greek salad' and omelette and chips was tasty but not the most flavoursome. All round a good place for a coffee lunch and a chat but the menu could do with some quality over menu choice.

My friend and I go there every week and we always get a warm welcome. The food is home-made and very tasty, at a very reasonable price. The menu is varied and original. I strongly recommend it.

I sometimes come to Carshalton during my lunch break and have tried other cafes in the area. I've found this is the best one the town has to offer. I've only ever had Panini's there and they are very nice. They are served with a side salad and the ingredients seem very fresh. The fruit smoothies are also very nice and the service is good.

As you walk through the door nine tables betwwen you and the deli counter which luckily you don't have to get to as the staff optionally bring a menu to your aid guiding you to a seat. Near the wall there is a low seating area which give the impression that this place is not the usual get them in, get them fed, get them out, habitual custom. WIth the long lighting cords hanging down covered by the reflective copper penenant sphere starts to make me wonder what's in store, really good service or really good coffee? A very popular busy privately owned coffee shop with a people passing through for a hot beverage or a take away form the fresh deli counter form office workers to ladies of leisure.Nice selection of soft drinks including fruit shoots for the kids the smell of cooffee aroma sifts therough the atomsphere.I dig in to a CHicken tikka spinach curry mayo wrap grilled in a crispy wafer thin bread that comes with salad and slices of cucmber lightly dashed with french dressing. The wrap is grilled so this dish is hot, the chicken tikka curry is not at all watery or over powering, the flavors unwind as the fresh spinach complements the chicken and the bread while the moisture of the curry sauce blends the hot, light spice that tingles those taste buds leaving a taste of freshness behind. you dont even need chicken to do this wrap justice.The coffee, I order a mocha and hot choclate after and well I must admit it is thick, it is full, comes in one size only cups with the choice of cream. and boy the richness in the hot chocolate is just right not at all watery . As for the mocha ,every sip was as good as the next with a delicate taste and sweetness

We caught the bus from the Airport and met our daughter here for coffee and eats before heading to her home up the road. It was along day and the service and the coffee and treats were excellent.

For real coffee it can't be beaten. I start every day with a cup of their coffee and it has real coffee to taste. The food is always fresh and inviting to try. The staff are always friendly and have created a warm and friendly environment to relax in.

Lovely friendly cafe. Very clean and a warm welcome from the staff. The coffee was in a decent sized cup and when I spilt some in the saucer the waitress very quickly replaced the saucer for me without me asking her to, I was impressed. The Danish was slightly warm and nice and fresh. I stayed for about an hour having just a coffee, an Danish and then a lemon and ginger tea, and I never felt rushed or encouraged to leave even though it was quite busy. All in all, I enjoyed my visit and would thoroughly recommend Roast and Ground.

Often drop in for a coffee and a bite to eat the staff are friendly and the coffee is the best in Carshalton although that is not difficult and it is on the expensive side. Small premises and sometimes crowded with push chairs

This was the refreshment stop on our lovely ramble along the river Wandle. I just went for an Americano: hot and strong, the way I like it. But great selection of food as well. Particularly liked the look of the puds and ice cream! Nice family-run place, just a bit worried about the little girl wandering around: very well-behaved but really too near some very hot drinks.

We visited this cafe yesterday looking for a lunchtime snack. My husband ordered a salami, sun dried tomato and mozzarella sandwich (that's what it said on the menu). When it arrived, he took a bite, I noticed that there was pesto in the sandwich too. My husband is severely allergic to nuts (pesto is made from pine nuts), had I not noticed he would have continued to eat the sandwich and potentially have a fatal reaction!When my husband told the waitress that he was allergic to pesto and could he have a replacement, she was not overly apologetic- not grasping the seriousness of their mistake, and when the new sandwich arrived she defended the decision saying that mozzarella comes with pesto!The key point is, pesto was not listed on the ingredients and therefore should not have been in the sandwich. We went home and had a nervous wait to see if there would be a delayed reaction to the meal!I will not be returning here, despite having pleasant experiences here in the past.If you suffer from allergies- beware and double check the content of your meal please.

I have been to Roast and Ground many times. The food is always very good, the service is excellent and comes with a smile and nothing seems like too much trouble for the friendly people that work there. The only down side is that because it is so popular it can get very busy and really they need bigger premises, having said that, they always seem to manage to find you a seat. I forgot to mention that it is very clean as well.

Great coffee shop and the lunch was lovely. My wife who is currently doing vegan for lent had plenty of options and a great selection of herbal tea's. I had the home made lasagne which was really nice, the service was great and the staff were really friendly. Highly recommend!!

This family run cafe is rightly popular. Food is freshly prepared and portions are generous. Coffee excellent.

Have been here many times and always enjoyed the food. Sadly it feels more about making money than keeping loyal customers happy. A few weeks ago we were rushed through our lunch as the cafe was busy and another time 3 of us were squashed on a table for 2 even though there were 4 other free tables, we were told it was necessary just in case the other tables were needed, they weren't used the whole time we were there. Will be going elsewhere from now on, shame as it's convenient for our lunch hour.

My wife and I would much rather go to a local business than a chain. So when we've had visitors and been for a walk around the village, we've chosen this cafe. The food has always been good and the service is always excellent. We visited a couple of weeks ago and came away feeling a little disappointed. It was quiet and we only had coffees and a cake, but we had to leave earlier than we intended because of the overwhelming smell of hot oil, it was like a chip-shop. I don't think it was from the chippy down the road as it seemed to be coming from the kitchen area. When you add that to the bland coffee (not the strength, the flavour) and a chocolate caramel shortbread with a chocolate-flavour topping rather than real chocolate, it wasn't what we had hoped for. So although we were disappointed, we'll give it another go in future, especially as the staff are really friendly.

I have been in Carshalton 6 months and found this fantastic place. Great service and good value for money.

Second visit to this popular and often busy Carshalton cafe. Starting with the minus points, it's closely packed seating here, for about 25 people inside and 8-10 outside, so not huge elbow room and can get quite noisy once the locals are chatting full pelt over their lattes. Secondly the only wifi I found was a BT one but that's minor.There is an excellent range of hot and cold drinks - decaff breakfast tea for example, and decent size cups with extra hot water too. Staff are pleasant and the cafe appeared very clean - as of course it should be. Toilets similarly.There seem to be always a good range of daily specials ranging from curry to Lasagne to houmouss, in the £4 to £6 price range.We both had jacket potatoes, which were a good size, cooked perfectly and with more than a token amount of salad and so good value.There's usually a range of newspapers and magazines to browse and a few more comfy chairs on which to do so. Child friendly and high chairs available.Top tip: park in side road adjacent, and save the car park cost.

Wonderful local cafe, great for coffee and handmade cakes and also a good lunchtime menu choice. Tables a bit close together and can be noisy but worth a visit.

This cafe has a good atmosphere and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Food is very good and the coffee is lovely - prices are extremely competitive and It is well worth a visit for lunch.

I visit every holiday with friends and family. They telk their friends and family who also then visit. Food and desserts absolutely fab. Although I always have the same menu on every visit. Quiche salad, with a smoothy and a chocolate fudge with ice cream for dessert. Other family members do the same, they have their favourite which they always order, tuna jacket potato, or omelette and chips. Staff give excellent service, very family orientated. It can be quite packed around 11.30am - 1.30ish but its worth waiting for a seat.

Would throughly recommend roast and ground to anyone! I've brought friends there and when they come to visit always say we should go 'to that lovely cafe'.Staff are friendly and always eager to help and they're always sweet to my little boy.I have heard some mums complain they're not child/ buggy friendly but never found this to be the case. There has been a note in the loo advising parents to take responsibility for their children which I think is fair enough. I always try and take the little buggy as the big one can be a bit of a squeeze.Overall food, drink and staff lovely. I think it is all very reasonably priced for what you get. Would thoroughly recommend.

Have had a few delicious lunches at this cafe ... the falafel, hummus and roasted pepper salad is so good as is the homemade lasagne ... rather partial to the tuna,spring onion n beetroot salad also. The food is always beautifully presented. Coffee is very good. The staff are always friendly and efficient and the facilities are clean. Gets very busy and can feel a bit squashy when all the table are occupied.

Roast and Ground is very popular with locals and a great meeting place for coffee and lunch. The food is great and my particular favourite is the pasta with tomato sauce, spinach and olives. They also serve great breakfasts, salads, jacket potatoes, paninis, sandwiches and lovely cakes and desserts. It is excellent value for money too.

Not your usual lunch of basic sandwiches etc. Lots of healthy options , fab salads, wraps , jacket potatoes etc. Every thing is homemade and made to order . Drinks are all fair trade and a wide selection.The Cafe is a small family run business and they are all very friendly but professional at the same time. The prices are very reasonable and fair. I feel it is a unique asset to our lovely Village.

Absolutely love this cafe. Have been going there at least one a month since it opened with its original owners. The menu has something for everyone and the standard of food is excellent. Owners and staff are always friendly.

I go in here at least once a week- and will always recommend ! Lovely staff, great atmosphere and coffee and light lunches etc which are not pretentious but great !

We went for breakfast and they only have a 'Healthy' option. To double check I asked if they had bacon, to which I was informed they did. However, this was incorrect they don't have bacon. I had a 'Healthy' sausage with my breakfast. The scrambled eggs and beans were nice and plenty of them, however the mushrooms had a bit of a funny taste (could be down to personal taste). However, the sausage had a hard bit in it (not sure what it was, but may have been due to being overcooked, but I could not get my knife though it - not nice)! Also I have to mention this; the Heinz Tomato Ketchup was, I think, either watered down, or a different cheaper brand put in the bottle, but it certainly did not taste like Heinz Tomato Ketchup. The staff where very friendly and the food come out in a respectable amount of time.Overall not that impressed, and won't be returning.

Really clean, welcoming, comfortable café. I pop in here for a coffee and pastry halfway through walking. a very nice breathing space. Also go here with friends often for lunch. A wide range of lunches from sandwiches for cooked lunches. Gets busy but very pleasant place.

Staff are friendly, food is great, good selection in the menu and on the board, food is well presented and reasonably priced, what's not to like? Either get there early for lunch or reserve or you will be disappointed. There is also a take out selection.

This place is where I always head to if I am in the area. The food is really good and not expensive at all, I am not quite sure how someone can describe it as expensive! It does get very busy, because it is so popular and from what I have observed, they are very welcoming to people with children, babies and prams. What makes this cafe stand out is the service, they are so welcoming, friendly and warm. I have often been in on my own and when it is very busy and have never felt rushed or unwelcome.I only wish I lived nearer so that I could go there more often...

Excellent food and extremely personable and efficient staff. Since this cafe opened the owners have maintained their high standards and continue to serve delicious food with a smile!If I were to make any criticism it would be that they could do with larger premises. Roast and Ground is so popular that it can be rather over-crowded at times, but this is just proof of their popularity! Keep up the good work (and try to get bigger premises)!

We have lived in Carshalton for 5 years now. We go to R&G almost every weekend for lunch and coffee. My son has become part of their family I think. They are always accommodating and have on occasion asked us to leave pram outside...this is of course only when they are extremely busy We have done so on many occasions and they keep an eye on for you. My son is now 3 and has enjoyed the odd lollypop at the end of the visit. I agree with most posts that the service is excellent and personable. We have loved Roast and Ground and will be loyal to them regardless of other high street coffee shops opening in town.... Heres to many more enjoyable weekend lunches and coffees at Roast and Ground.....

Was in town looking at flats this weekend, and stopped off her for lunch. Menu had so much to choose from. Food was pretty good. Came to £17 for two meals (lasagne and jacket potato with chicken, 2 drinks (fresh smoothie and a tea) and a carrot cake for dessert.

Excellent food from here yet again and service is personal. Coffee good and can recommend the Chilli and Rice from the special board

Our family has been going to the Roast and Ground for a number of years. Consistently the food and drink have always been excellent, very fresh and tasty. Service has always and without fail been friendly and personable and we have noticed that the staff go out of their way to accommodate both families with young children and groups whilst the individual is never ignored either and is made to feel at home. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food and drink. We would highly recommend it as it is a real pleasure to visit here.

I have taken my little girl here ever since she was born and my husband and I have been going for years before this. Always friendly, accommodating even when we have the pushchair. There may be a little moving of tables to get the pram in or it's put outside but that's expected when the cafe is quite small and there are a lot of tables and chairs. Does get very busy sometimes but probably because it is so popular. Food is always great, with a wide selection. Always worth a visit if you're in the area.
