Very disappointed that the cafe was closed. On the website says open Wed-Sunday from 11-3pm. Double checked with the Tourist Office in Ballater they advised us that itwas open from 12-3pm. We walked all the way from Ballater to find it was closed !!!!!We found 2 other people there also disappointed. Have been visiting for some yearsnow food was always fantastic but think will give it a miss in the future. The word in Ballater was that the opening times is not dependable.

We live locally and visit Riverside fairly frequently for the delicious bread and lovely atmosphere, however on this occasion we were really disappointed. The cafe was incredibly busy on the last day of the local school holidays, and staff were clearly under a lot of pressure. That’s a shame for them but I was more than willing to wait for service... however (after our lunch and waiting +10 mins for someone to come and take our ice-cream order), my two kids started to queue beside the ice-cream counter, another 15/20 mins went by and my kids seemed to be being overlooked so I asked one of the staff (I believe he’s the owner) whether I could order an ice-cream. He rolled his eyes at me! No humour, no smiles and aggressively said “I don’t do them that’s “her” job”, pointing at the other member of staff who was in the middle of serving the biggest queue of customers. Was possibly the rudest service I have ever encountered in a cafe or restaurant. I appreciate that the cafe was really busy that day but there was no need for me to be spoken to that way or met with that attitude. However he came back over and asked what I’d like to order and when I told him it was a sundae (v expensive at almost £10), he rolled his eyes again! At that point I said “it’s ok, don’t bother, we’ll go elsewhere”. His retort, an aggressive, “I don’t work on the floor, I’m supposed to be in the kitchen”. Still no apology. Saving grace - when it was my turn to pay, the young woman (Amy?) who was working at the counter, apologised profusely for the wait and explained they were short-staffed. She was lovely and I was able to tell her about the dismissive, rude and aggressive service. She apologised again and deducted the cost of our drinks. It’s thanks to her that we may consider going back... but not for a wee while. I have no end of sympathy for places that are busy and can’t keep up with demand - as long as the service is polite and the food good. Unfortunately the Manager of Riverside would have done better to have simply stayed in the kitchen and away from the customers on this occasion! Ended up going to Ballater and visiting Shorty’s ice-cream shop for delicious sundaes at less than half the price... and lots of smiles!

While touring Scotland last year we stumbled across this little gem. Just looking for a place to stop for a bit of food and a comfort break but wow are we glad we stopped. Fantastic food and drink at a great price for what you get. I had an amazing bacon sandwich. Think crusty bread and not skimpy on the amount of bacon!!! We stopped off for two chicken and bacon sandwiches, a ham sandwich, three drinks and we were just under £30!!!!!!! No salad or crisps with sanny either. Absolutely astounding how they could charge those prices. The kids ham sanny was a joke as they only got half a sandwich. Only thing that made up for shock of price was taste. It was the finest chicken and bacon sandwich I have ever tasted. Worth a visit but only as a one off unless you want to bankrupt yourself.

Decaf thee was alleen in rooibos. Kortom, alles gewoon goed voor wat je mag verwachten.

We visited for lunch recently, with high hopes. The food was OK, but prices were extortionate. 2 sandwiches with chicken, lettuce and tomato and tiny salad, £17. Three teas, and 2 small apple and cinnamon cakes, the size of a small muffin, and one of them with a single scoop of ice cream.....grand total of £35.40. I never complain about prices, and firmly believe you get what you pay for and willingly choose to pay good prices for good food over cheap food. But, very sorry to say, the prices here are a rip off.

So I've eaten at Riverside Cottage several times now and usually have the amazing Tuna Melt (you do have to ask for it to be toasted) however, this time I followed my Mum's recommendation and tried the BLT. Oh my! What a good decision and what a lovely toasty!!! Great little side salad and a shared 'bucket' of chips - yummy. Mum was singing the praises of her Americano, saying it was the best, smoothest coffee around, so I just had to follow my sandwich with a cake and latte. The latte was lovely and definitely very smooth. I decided on a chocolate brownie and was encouraged by the staff to have it hot with a scoop of ice-cream. The staff definitely know best - wow! This is not a big place and it can get very busy but very, very worth it... Maybe a little more expensive than you'd expect to pay for a toasty but you won't be disappointed!

After a long journey and a long time of trying to find something to eat, we saw a sign on the side of the road saying "food served all day". Unfortunately in this place 4.30 is the end of the day apparently as we got informed that's when the kitchen closes. Not to mention that when we got back to the car we checked the time being 4.30 exactly. False advertisement all the way and the most annoying kind - promising something warm to eat when you cold tired and hungry.

Their ice-cream sundaes are amazing if you can fit one in after your main course! I opted for the fudge one but have a few I'd like to work my way through. Archie, is the best maître d and helps you chill out in the cosy surroundings! Will definitely be back...

An excellent cafe offering breakfast to afternoon service. High quality simple food and the extra offering of a licence. Not many tables indoors but plenty of them outside. Very friendly service. Ideal for a light lunch after a morning's walk.

Recommended by Craigendarroch to visit this charming little restaurant near Ballater. Wonderful interior with a crazy mixture of tables, chairs and crockery but extremely charming and helpful member of staff. Had lunch of soup and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Freshly prepared food yet served quickly and efficiently. Very generous plate of both eggs and salmon. Perfectly cooked and seasoned - delicious. Had an interesting chat with the owner about the restaurant and the near-by cheese factory, then were left in peace to eat our meal. Finished with an excellent coffee and one of their recommended mini-cakes (lemon drizzle). Would thoroughly recommend this place for lunch, quick snack or even an evening meal. Unfortunately were not able to attend one of their special Christmas evening buffets but the menu looked good.

We had a lovely evening meal here and my Mum tried tapas for the fist time. Very good introduction for her. The only slight negative was it was very quiet for a Friday night so the ambiance was a little lacking and I think maybe I would prefer to go during the day if I was going again. That was not the fault of the staff who were lovely but I did feel very sorry for them working when only two tables were occupied.

The first day we were out of luck as they were full, so we made sure that we got a table the next day, and it was well worth it. Great lunch, the menu is straight forward, something for everyone. We ate everything on our plates. The staff are very pleasant and efficient.

What a find! Just across the road from the Dee Side Cycle way, this little café caters for cyclists and walkers as well as the car driver. A sunny autumn day found us sitting outside on the decking They provide blankets for you if you want to enjoy the fresh air while having lunch. They also have dog water bowls dotted around the patio and garden area. Lunch was delicious. It was above the standard you would expect for a little Road side café. They serve food all-day meaning you can fit this into your route regardless of when you plan to pass by. Great wee place - we will definitely be back.

We stopped in after a day of sight seeing. The staff were very friendly, and we ate delicious soup and sandwiches. We loved the quaint, cozy, family run feeling of the place. We even sat by the fire to warm up! We would love to return.

We popped in for tea and scones while walking along the old railway from Ballater. Both were excellent and that was when we discovered that later that day (Friday) they do tapas. So we booked a table and returned a few hours later. What a spread! A fantastic range of little dishes which, as you would expect of good tapas, you can combine however you want. We chose the full evening tapas meal and each dish was nicely presented and very tasty. The only surprise was that they don't serve Spanish wine, but the Merlot we chose went still went well with the food. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and service is prompt.Tapas is only available on Fri and Sat evenings, 5.30-8.30pm (check times). Because it is a small place, you need to book to avoid being disappointed.

We came here for a cup of tea and a cake after a walk at the Muir of Dinnet and found it a very pleasant place for an afternoon break. You can either eat inside or do as we did and sit at one of the outside tables and look at the scenery. While here we found that they were putting on a Tapas and Opera evening the following night. The opera singers were from a local amateur group and were excellent, some well up to professional standard. The tapas was very tasty and well cooked. All together it made for a very entertaining evening.

What a lovely evening, great food, friendly staff and the quiz was a bonus. What a laugh the place was buzzing.

On a very wet day we were recommended to come here and were not disappointed. Warm and friendly welcome, excellent service and delicious lunch. Akira and Carol both attended to little details without asking - ie Carol serving an extra large portion of chips when I declined other veg that were on the menu (brother in law pleased to help me out!) and Akira giving my sister a takeaway box as she couldn't manage the whole of her panini. Brillliant. I live in Devon so may not be passing through again but would wholeheartedly recommend visiting.

Visited here for Sunday "carvery" whilst staying onsite. Service was excellent by all staff members, however we were expecting a carvery where you help yourself to a selection of roast meats and veg. This wasn't the case it was just a regular Sunday roast prepared in the kitchen and served at your table. The roast itself was very average, the only veg being peas and carrots along with cheap tasting pigs in blankets. This was priced at around £21 pp for 2 courses,I think it was done as cheap as possible. Although the food tasted absolutely fine it was by no means anything other than average and definitely not a carvery.
