I used to come here back in the day under old management and the service, drinks and vibe were fantastic. It’s been under new management for a few years - I believe 1 of the (bearded) barmen is the owner. I’ve had the misfortune of interacting with him the last few times I came and he’s always been abrupt, rude and arrogant. On this particular night though the waiter (a tall black guy) was absolutely superb! He made up for the substandard welcome we got. The drinks have been up and down since new management but in this occassion what we ordered was quite nice.

Great cocktails, cool air conditioning, interesting backstory and incredible owner/staff. Yes it is shabby. If you want under chic then goto Claridges. This was different. The cocktails were different and original. The space is different and shabby. Would defiantly go back.

Bizarre atmosphere, indifferent server and hugely disappointing tasteless cocktails. Shabby chic? It is certainly shabby. I would not recommend at all. There are plenty more friendly, interesting cocktail bars in this area. Trying too hard to be different.

We stumbled into this cocktail bar looking for something to get us going and feeling good before dinner, but we ended up feeling sorely let down. After waiting several minutes standing up in the middle of the bar to be sat down as we were requested to, with plenty of empty seats around, we then had to wait another 20mins to have our order taken. This was despite us politely asking what’s going on and can we get some service? When even the barman ran out of patience and asked the waiter “Rhidian” to take our order he arrogantly replied “I will get around to them!”, and then proceeded to clear away glasses, and clean tables in plain sight of us. I eventually got up and asked him quite loudly “Do you have some sort of problem with us? You’ve served people who arrived 10mins later with water and taken their order? Am I missing something or do you have a problem with us?” at which point he decided he probably valued his job more than his ego or whatever ulterior motive he had and got our drinks. We won’t be back, we will tell friends in the area to steer well clear and we didn’t appreciate the 20% charity discount - we can afford a couple of cocktails in London thank you Rhidian...

As others here have mentioned, this place is underground, cozy and very laid back. The cocktails are out of this world in taste and inventiveness. I have only been here once so far and found the staff to be very friendly and informative. The music selection was super fun as well, throwing in modern electronic instrumental music combined with obscure 80s and 90s music. Really cool vibe all around. More a catch-up-with-friends place than a date night place though. The only real minus comes in the decor and marketing. They could really run with the name and make this place into some kind of naughty church bar or something. The stripped walls just make you feel like you're squatting a bunker. And, it's not a secret bar - there's a big placard outside announcing the place and enticing you in for gin :) It needs a decorative makeover and more of consistent identity on the marketing front. It's egregious enough that you can't ignore it when you're in there.

Please note this is a downstairs bar as we couldn’t find it at first. There wasn’t much drink selection but what we ordered was nice. The decor was a bit strange as if someone was decorating and you could see old wallpaper applied from the previous owners. I don’t know if this was the theme but it wasn’t my scene.

This place was on my friend’s list to to go and so when we came across it we decided to go for a drink. It’s a bit of a surreal place - it looks like it’s halfway through a renovation project where the walls have been stripped down, but they haven’t quite managed to finish it. (There was even a smell of paint at the entrance, although I think that was just a coincidence from the actual renovation work going on upstairs). Regardless, I guess that’s part of the decor and charm of the place. Decor aside, the staff were really good and speedy. There’s a great menu of cocktails each themed around rooms in a house (I would recommend the “A curious story...” from the Living Room section which comes with an actual cucumber sandwich). A good place to visit if you’re in the neighbourhood and want a drinks.

A wonderful bar on Goodge st. After dinner we walked by a very unassuming small door with the smallest sign stating it was a cocktail bar. After heading downstairs, we were informed that booking was usually necessary, but as it was about 8 on a Thursday we were able to book a seat. The waitress was friendly and engaging and stated her recommendation ( a lovely gin based cocktail with a spicy deep taste which came with ham). The cocktails are well thought out and blended, and priced as you'd expect for central London. The decor is intentionally lacking, but provides a perfect dim lit cosy environment - highly recommended.

My friend who came with me was especially impressed that they had a bottle of Reyka (Icelandic Vodka) and they knew that it had an odd aftertaste, but exactly how to use it to its strengths. I went on a bit of a hell theme for my cocktail choices - Highway to Hell & Diablo - and both were absolutely gorgeous. There's probably some sort of Satanic lay line that passes through here. First this place was a brothel. And now, having not really changed the decor much, they've turned it into a den of intoxication. Stocked behind the bar are powerful malevolent liquids that trained experts will transmute into tasty - but EVIL, definitely definitely evil - potations. But if you're going to demand your liver, your blood chemistry and your brain throw themselves onto a grenade for your pleasure, you might as well do it with some style and a bit of quality. When I went on a recent Friday night, some of the clientele decided to, rather than use the seats around their reserved tables, stand. This was not how it was supposed to happen. This isn't a bloody bar you idiots. Sit back down. The staff didn't mind too much and didn't tell them off. They looked slightly put out though. This is that sort of place. The staff are very knowledgeable about their spirits and cocktails. And you will find an excellent selection of drinks are stocked. You can ask them to recommend you something off menu. But then something happened I should have expected. It was my birthday. My friends began to order drinks for me. That's when my memory starts to get a bit furry. How can I review the place properly when I cannot remember half the night? How can any reviewer say they've experienced this place properly enough to give a thorough review if they can remember it? And so, logically speaking, you can never learn about JW Simpson through reading Trip Advisor. You just have to go there. Oh yeah - it's a unisex bathroom. It's a very nice bathroom and everything, but it's a mean trick to pull on drunk people. See? Satanic lay lines people. Satanic lay lines.

I booked Reverend SW Simpson for my birthday for 20 people on Jan 29th. When we arrived the bar was not even full and it took half an hour to get staff attention to order our first drinks needless to say that they had other people still sitting on our table 20 min past our booking time. The evening started fairly well and were looking like a great night but wait till later. The service was overall slow but then I took into account the fact that the bar was busy. At the very end the administrator announces that they have put everything on one tap despite me asking couple of times to manage separate taps for a large group of people for obvious reasons. After they started demanding people to pay the bill and being extremely rude to everyone and acting so unprofessionally and waiving bill at everyone. There was no sign of politeness and customer service you would expect from what claims to be a cosy place and the bar who wants to place itself at the top rank in London scene. Most of my friends said they paid separately and it was impossible to know how many items of that bill were even credible items. Before we even left and finished our drinks they started sitting other people at our table!!! Oh well it couldn't have gone any worse than this. Ruined my birthday and left a very bitter experience. The staff even did't take time to apologise or make things up. So people watch out before deciding to take a big group of people there. It might still pull things off for smaller groups and dates where similar things unlikely to repeat. I tried to pass on a feedback in a friendly manner to the lady over the phone when getting back my booking deposit but she could't care less and came across very ignorant. I rarely leave negative feedbacks but couldn't leave this one out. In fact this is my first negative review!!!

Drinks very tasty. Great setting. Service was friendly but inattentive - practically had to drag a waiter over to get the bill. Get that right and you're on to a winner.

I made a reservation here for pre dinner drinks for my boyfriends 30th birthday. Having recently had a poor experience at a different Fitzrovia cocktail bar I was once again putting my faith in tripadvisor. As always this paid off, we were shown to our table straight away, received table service by polite staff, given complimentary popcorn, they had a good cocktail menu. The music was good; indie / rock tunes, everyone else in there seemed normal - it wasn't pretentious at all. I will be coming back with friends next time!

I discovered this inconspicuous bar from the Nudge's website and was really very impressed. The cocktails were amazing and served by staff who are really passionate about what they do. We visited on a Friday night and it was great to be able to get a seat through making a reservation online.Would most definitely recommend to those wanting to have a relaxed drink. It is shame that they do not haver a late night licence but that would not put me off from re-visiting.

Atmospheric little cocktail bar down in a basement. Brilliant drinks and a good selection too. There didn't seem to be any food on offer other than a small bag of popcorn when you arrive. The staff were very friendly and the service was good despite it being busy. You'll need to book on a Friday night. Great place.

My partner and I discovered the Reverend in May and have been returning regularly ever since. We are both madly in love with it and would definitely recommend it to everyone. Everything in this little drinking den is simply stunning: decorations are quite essential and give the place a very elegant 'decadent' edge; the cocktails are sublime, amazingly original, tasty and vibrant, and the staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable (Joaquin, Téva and Stephanie are by far the most competent mixologists I have ever met and extraordinarily interesting people to chat with). The drinks list is updated regularly, hence adding a lot of variety to the already rich range of options. It is hard to think of anything less than superb: the only criticism I can think of is that the music sometimes does not exactly match the atmosphere. I personally think that a combination of jazz, fusion and downtempo would be more appropriate than the '70s-'80s-'90s rock currently being played. At any rate, Reverend JW Simpson offers such an unforgettable experience that every other cocktail bar in London pales in comparison. Heartily recommended!!!

Not quite sure what to rate for food somewhere that does not serve food! Went here for drinks with friends the cocktails were uniquw creations and the service was good if a little slow at times. The atmosphere was good busy without being to noisy. Similar to other 'quirky' cocktail places you can find around london but with the convinience of an online booking system.

What a find! Almost don't want to let people in on the secret, but I will because it would be great to see this place do well. It's a very quirky little place, but so atmospheric and such a pleasant change from so many of the soulless bars in London. The cocktail list is inventive, and is apparently changed pretty regularly. The mixologist who made our drinks definitely knew what she was doing, and came over to have a chat with us about the cocktail masterclass evenings they run (which we will definitely be booking!). We liked it so much we went back for more cocktails after dinner. All of the staff were really friendly and helpful. It won't be our last visit.

Some of the best cocktails I've ever had, plus free popcorn with your drinks. They make a mean old fashioned.Sometimes the lights are too bright though, but that's just because I prefer the slightly murkier aesthetic

Amazing, delicious cocktails mixed by very passionate geniuses! Although there is no food on offer here (other than popcorn), we simply popped out, had some food and came back again.

What a lovely midweek find. Not unlike many of the speak easy style underground cocktail bars in town, it hits the spot. Lovely drinks, great atmosphere and cocktails to inspire even the most staunch of Reverends in Fitzrovia and beyond. I imagine very very busy on Thursday but a Monday night was perfect. Enough to make me follow the church and the reverend to his blue plaque heritage home.

We were recommended this lovely bar by the manager in Bubbledogs. We had a little wait for food so we headed along here for a drink. The bartenders made us up some cocktails based on our drink preferences and they were lovely! They also came along with some popcorn to snack on which was just what we were after for pre-dinner drinks.Would definitely come back here - it is a hidden gem!

I booked the Reverend JW Simpson for some drinks with my girls (group of 4). It was a great & quirky place! None of us had been before, but we all loved it. Staff was really friendly&attentive (always topping up your tap water!), we got popcorn nibbles & the atmosphere was great. Drinks are not on the cheap side, but different & worth it (also quite boozy). Will definetly go back. Would recommend booking in advance if you're going with more than 2 people, as it's a tiny place.

I guess I had expected this place to offer some food since I'd booked it on OpenTable. Instead, it is this really cool London cocktail bar with some really inventive cocktails. The interior with plush furnishings is lit by candles and makes for an ideal place for a catch-up with friends or colleagues as well as some romantic cocktails or a date. The one thing I really missed were some nibbles to go with the cocktails such as a cheese or cured meat platter, olives, bruschettas, just something to soak up the alcohol so that we can stay there all evening.

This quirkily named cocktail bar is a great find in Fitzrovia. Be careful not to walk past the door and go down to a shabby-chic cellar. The staff are friendly, and the cocktails are from top quality ingredients, with some novel options containing ingredients such as a pinot noir reduction (paired with bourbon). Good for talking to friends and lovers.

We had a really bad experience at the Hansom restaurant today. We went to celebrate my mum's 70th birthday and had booked afternoon tea. We were 4 adults and 2 small children so made a reservation for 6. My husband is diabetic so can't have cakes. When we arrived we were told by the front of house lady that we HAD to order 4 afternoon teas because the reservation was made for 4 adults and the tea was preordered the day before. It felt very condesending and we felt talked down to. If that indeed is the policy, it was not made clear in the reservation and I was made to believe I was in the wrong and trying to weasel out of an agreement. Now we've been to afternoon tea at plenty of different hotels including the Ritz and Dorchester and have never been told that. It felt really embarrassing and not at all pleasant. This staff member handled this situation extremely poorly. I wanted to leave at that point and was thorougly embarrased for my mum who we wanted to have a good time for her birthday. The front of house person was rude and very aggressive when she told us that and stormed off to talk to her manager only to come back to tell us that they were OK to let us order 2 afternoon teas and 2 courses of their normal menu for the other party which we agreed to but it did really dampen the mood and from then on it was just a sh@tshow. It took them probably 45 minutes from arriving to take our order. We finally received 2 plates of sandwiches and food for the children. We had ordered chicken and ice cream. They brought the chicken and left the ice cream sitting out until the kids were finished with their main course so the ice cream was liquid. The main courses arrived, but no cakes. The steak was also over peppered unfortunately. We spilled water but no one cleaned it up or offered a new napkin. Plates weren't cleared, we had to call waiters over to ask for small plates to eat the sandwiches from. 2 hours in there still wasn't any sight of any scones or cakes. By that point my kids were super tired and fed up and frankly we just wanted to go home. I complained to the same lady (front of house) and got told it was standard practice to leave a decent amount of time between courses. I don't think 2 hours is reasonable to wait for scones and cakes! This certainly did not happen the last time I went here for afternoon tea. I told her that we actually just wanted to go home and nobody was in the mood for cakes anymore, that we really weren't happy and frankly super disappointed with the service. She was snide, unapologetic and just kept saying let me check. Finally her manager came over and offered us a reduction in the bill and packaged up the cakes to go. It was a thoroughly underwhelming experience where no proper afternoon tea was had. I had let them know in the reservation that it was for a big birthday, but nothing was done for my mum to make it special. It also didn't feel particularly child friendly and welcoming to a family with 2 young children. The only saving grace was that we were all together, but the day was throughly ruined by the experience. Very very shoddy! Cannot recommend. Overpriced and awful service!
