The Flagship and Iconic Deanes on Howard Street is in my opinion one of the best restaurants I have eaten in. This was Michael's original restaurant (I had my 30th birthday here-many moons ago) and has now morphed into EIPIC, Deanes Meat Locker and Deanes Love Fish.Viva and her team treated us royally and were on hand with Chez Deaneo wines and drinks. The main course here was roast chicken with potato and root vegetables. The chicken was tender and juicy, potato was buttery and vegetables were crunchy with a hint of honey. A lovely main.

Michael Deane is an establishment in Belfast, it sets the standard for others to try and achieve. The food is consistently good, very high quality and a wine list to match, but expect a bill to match, hence the four starts and not five. This is a great restaurant if you want to impress; it is formal but still relaxed, and if you don't mind paying, then it is highly recommended.

That takes the guessing game away.Served simply with an ample basket portion of thick cut chips per person. A selection of sauces with the sauce 'robert' excellent. .. a rich beef flavoured silky smooth sauce.Sirloin at approx £25.This visit was a bread basket, two steaks, tea & coffee for about £67, which included the auto 10% service tip.Excellent value for this quality of meal. The service seemed a bit all over the place initially with a waitress trying to take an order without us seeing a menu but eventually we got there. My sirloin was nice, chips were good but not a lot of them but the au poivre was extremely watery all round. Our group had ordered two fillet steaks as well and these weren't great. They both were very fatty which was strange for a fillet. Would try here again maybe during a less busy time.

Dined here last night with a party of six. 1st time at the meat locker having been a little underwhelmed by Deane's at Queens in the past. Understandably the menu has to cater for a range of tastes but my advice is to treat this as a classic steak house in the vein of Hawksmoor or the Grillshack in London. For starters I went with the scallops - three big, plump beauties caramlised without being overdone, simple but perfect. Then the Delmonico Rib med rare, pepper sauce on the side with beef dripping chips. Now steak and chips can be had in any pub for under a tenner and some reviewers who confuse price with value will use that as a benchmark. This would be to do a grave injustice to the offerings at the Meat Locker - well aged, marbled, perfectly seasoned and cooked exactly as ordered this was outstanding value at £26. In London or New York this quality of beef would easily be in the £30-40 range. Also the chips were fat batons of pure nostalgia - this is what chips used to taste like before the health police banished dripping. Wonderful! Even the grilled tomato that came with the steak was elavated by being infused with garlic. Some restaurants can do wonders in applying a range of skill to cheap ingedients to produce really good value pre theatre menus (James Street South leads the way in this regard) but my advice for the Meat Locker is to wait until you can afford to go a la carte, get the steak and enjoy simple perfection. Oh yes service was good despite being quite busy.

Went to the meat locker with a friend, we had never been happened to be in belfast but had made a booking prior to arrival. The interior is very crisp and the chandelier in the stair well at toilets is Huge! But it is called "the meat locker" however from the menu the starters was nearly all fish and I dont eat any for of fish and stupidly I ordered the beef carpaccio which i frogot was served cold and Im not a lover of cold meats either however it was very tasty and a mastake on my behalf.(Also between every course we were served or atended by six different waiters and waitress's and service was poilte but abit sloppy) I had stake and chips for a main you cant go wrong really, and chocolate fondant for dessert which again was tasty. However when paying we actualy tipped £10 without been made aware making the bill £102 and we had no drinks just water considering there is loads of other good food places near by and some mitchlin stared they charge less for better food I feel and I cannot rate higher than average for this establishment.

I liked the decor apart from the crystal chandeliers which seemed to me incongruous.Starters were decidedly mixed. My foie gras was brilliant. My partner's mozzarella and tomato was awful. Three tiny little balls of buffalo mozzarella for the price was a total rip off. Buffalo Mozzarella isn't gold dust Mr. Deane, one can even buy it in Marks and Spencers! Our wine was excellent, particularly my Malbec. This is when things went wrong. My Delmonico steak arrived but where was partner's fish? "Very sorry sir there was a mix up in the order." Fair enough, mistakes happen but don't bring one main course out until the other is ready. The steak was fair but I barbecued a more tender Ribeye from Sainsbury's a few nights later. What really annoyed me was that despite my complaints they added 10% service charge!!This is supposed to be one of the top restaurants in Belfast. Please Mr. Deane train your staff in the art of service. They did their best but without proper training they can't be blamed. The boss has to take the blame.

I don't eat beef so I wasn't over excited about going to meat locker for dinner with friends one Saturday night but that made the experience all the better. Great atmosphere at 8pm on a Saturday evening, the place was full but the service did not suffer at all. A few lovely specials on offer so I went for the blackened tiger prawns to start with a little dipping sauce- they needed nothing - they were divine. A few others got the frito misto which would not of been my choice due to a bad one in Rome many years ago but I tasted it and I was converted- it will be my choice next time we visit. I ordered the swordfish off the grill for mains whilst the others all got steaks and there was stoney silence at the table as we all drooled then devoured our food- all executed to perfection and the chips- well Mr Deane you could always make the best triple cooked chips in town. No desserts just Irish coffees and a promise that we will all be back again as soon as possible. A general observation about Deanes restaurants- don't be fooled by a simple or perhaps up exciting menu at times- the food is always cooked to perfection and rarely fails to disappoint.

After waiting all day for what should have been a delightful evening meal at Deane's seafood restaurant the meal was not to the standard you are paying for. We ordered the pot cod and salmon dish. The cod was something if you haven't any form of cookery skills could have made yourself and the salmon was bland on the palette sitting next to the strongly overwhelming flavour of bombay potatoes for a fish dish. Service was on the whole not terrible but slow to order our main course. The atmosphere was clinical and cold, with music that was randomly turned on mid-meal that was far too loud and not in keeping with the style of the restaurant. Despite having booked early for a table we were crammed in to a tiny space in between two other tables even though the restaurant was not particularly busy. The best bit of the experience was ordering a portion of beef-dripping chips, however there were only 7 in the portion for £3.50, now that seems overly minimalistic. Just generally quite disappointed and actually looked forward to writing a review (we were in and out within the space of 40 minutes so I didn't have to wait long - the main course portions can be consumed in about three minutes ....max.)

I was disappointed with service and the food!!! In particular the waitress with the black hair in a ponytail who seemed to have a nonchalant attitude to service and a superior being approach to customers. I returned my main course due to the chicken being cold she come back and had the audacity to ask me if I realise the salad on top of the chicken would cool the food. The food was returned, it was not a fresh portion, it was the chicken id asked to be changed just heated up.The evening lacked attention to detail with guests queuing for what seemed too long unnoticed by the service team.Gents toilet floor swimming in water at the urinals and all along the wall - I advised the Restaurant Manager (i think) who sent a male member of the waiting staff to sort them. The bill had a 10% service charge add automatically which I had removed. As a regular very disappointed!!

Michael Deanes - Meat Locker provided a highlight meal for ourselves and friends from Canada prior to attending the nearby Belfast Grand Opera House. From our early evening arrival till we left, it was near perfect. Only thing missing was , if it was Miami and sunny it would be perfect.Five of us sat down with two going for the pre theatre, the other three going for gold, the sirloin. My starter was foie gras parfait with apple chutney and it was so rich and tasty, a lovely combination of flavours. Unfortunately everbody wanted to try it,,,I should have had two. The other starters were goats cheese tart and scallops. Both were excellent, but I definitely think the foie gras was the gem.For main, I had rump of beef, pearl onion and mash. which was very tender and the sauce was excellent. The other pre theatre main was rosemary roast chicken, asparagus and cherry tomato. Now the creme de la creme was delivered the three people who ordered sirloin. They were all cooked to personal perfection, were so tender and juicy. I really thought I had pulled the rabbit out the hat with my choice of meal, however I was wishing I had chosen the steak. Fortunately my son took pity and let me try a little of his.....I am generally a tournedos rossini if available or chateubriand person, but these steaks were simply cooked and fantastic.Only two had deserts, one black forest ice cream and one panettone bread and butter pudding. The black forest was very tasty, as was the panettone.Service was excellent and attentive without being intrusive. It was definitely a popular place to eat.How did we find this place....very easy actually....we were walking back to our hotel the night before "Holiday Inn Belfast". When walking past meatlocker we struck up conversation with a friendly lad from Dublin, who was outside for a smoke after his meal, he couldn't recommend it enough. An excellent recommendation. It's not cheap (£95 for 2 pre theater and 1 a la carte) , but then again it's not average quality either, definitely worth paying the extra for such a nice meal - highly recommended

Had really high hopes for the new Eipic restaurant although they were soon dashed. Biggest two suprises were 1) portion size - the £6.50 lunch was the size of an average starter (one nearby diner had four chips and one fish goujon which was described as "Fish and Chips" - can't argue with that I suppose, althought the waitress did forewarn another table that the portions were tiny before they ordered); and 2) price - about £15 including a non discretionary 10% service charge for two starters...Having said that, if you're on a diet I would thoroughly recommend this lunch - it effectively took a normal lunch and divided it into three portions. So if you want to eat well but eat less, eat here...but it won't be three meals for the price of one.

The accompanying photo needs to be updated. The new Michael Deane restaurant, Eipic, opened two months ago, and is very sophisticated. It is in muted tones with expensive upholstery on very comfortable chairs; a glass wine cellar divides the bar from the dining room. Even the china is unusual in shape and very pretty.Michael Deane's now is three restaurants:Meat Locker specializing in Argentinian beef; I Love Fish for the pescatores; and the new Eipic, representing the culmination of his empire. The menu at Eipic is limited but creative, representing the best of European culinary talent. After a drink at the lovely, comfortable bar (a PERFECT martini and Kir), we opted for the three-course tasting menu, which with amuse-bouche and palate cleanser, was five courses. (The tasting menu of three courses was 30 pounds; a seven-course menu was 70 pounds - $52 and $121, respectively. There is an excellent wine list.Service was helpful, well paced. - Amuse bouche, a fois gras "ice cream" with rhubarb; first course, langoustine with pea mousse and black pudding; lovely rare lamb with asparagus; palate cleanser of frozen celery and a yoghurt biscuit; dessert, a pear cake with poached pear and earl gray mousse. The portions are small, so if big pub food is your craving, go elsewhere. We enjoyed the friendly, professional service and slow pace. No wonder Michael Deane is the only Michelin 1-star chef in Ireland. He came by our table to chat

The T Bone flame grilled steak (650g between 2) was cooked exactly as we had ordered and served exquisitely, side orders were perfect and we selected a Lebanese wine from the wine list which was an excellent accompaniment. My husband had a sundae for desert "to die for" and I chose 2 cheeses and port. We could not fault one aspect of our meal, everything was superb. The restaurant was packed and the atmosphere buzzing. Lots of lovely bistro type places have opened recently in Belfast which generally offer great food at good value but we have been missing that real fine dining experience with no Michelin stars in sight. Hopefully that will end soon. We have just had without doubt our finest meal and experience in Belfast for many a year at Michael deanes new epic restaurant. We had the three course tasting menu which equated to about seven after all the extras and almost without exception it was magnificent. I have never previously reviewed on trip advisor but felt compelled to do so. The cost was £30 per head which was a steal. I had some matching wines which added to the experience and of course the cost. A thoroughly enjoyable, value for money gastronomic experience. I can't imagine the 3 course tasting menu at £30 per head will last long .

Having enjoyed eating in some of the World's best hotels/restaurants, including The Ritz, London/ Gleneagles, Scotland/ K Club, Ireland/The Peninsula, Los Angeles - and many many more worldwide, I can seriously recommend the recently revamped Deane's Restaurant in Howard Street, Belfast, to be as good, if not better, than all the rest. There is certainly no other restaurant in the same class, for me, anywhere in Howard Street (or anywhere else in Northern Ireland). The care taken in preparation of each exquisite meal, by highly qualified chefs, is without fault - as is the courteous manner of each of the well-trained restaurant staff, in attending to the needs and expectations of all diners.

Was invited at the Deanes for my fist evening ever in Belfast. We got in on time, were nicely welcomed and escorted at our table and given the menus (that can be seen on http://www.michaeldeane.co.uk/deanes/). We ordered each of us a Walter’s Smoked Salmon (a surprisingly thick but very good piece) and a Delmonico Rib Steak (excellent as well). The wine list was rich and original. We selected a great 2008 Amarone red wine (Scriani) that was perfect with our meal. Finally we chose some excellent French cheeses to conclude a very good dinner. Service was attentive at all time. Bottom line: the key is not to raise too much expectations. Deane decided to run now a brasserie and no more a Michelin starred restaurant. And this is what it is now: an excellent French brasserie I am quite keen to visit upon my next visit in Belfast.

My husband had an appointment at the city hospital this morning and had to return there in the afternoon. We walked into the city centre with the intent of going to the Christmas market but on the way we passed Deanne's we had walked past before and always said that we must try it some day and today we thought why not! We were seated and greeted by a very pleasant waitress, we thought we would try the £6.50 lunch menu. My husband had fish and chips and I had the mushroom risotto both were absolutely fabulous!! The presentation was lovely yes they might not be the biggest portions to some people but for £6.95 we thought it was well worth it, to be able to sit in a lovely restaurant have linen napkins and a lovely atmosphere, well worth it, will defiantly be back. Hard to beat Ginger's starter all the same . Salmon was beautifully cooked and seasoned with delicious green beans and boiled potatoes , with an extra portion of fat chips for good measure . Yum yum . A reasonable price for this standard and service . A price not just for special occasions . Consistently good unlike many restaurants .

I have no hesitation in recommending this as the best restaurant in Ireland (or, indeed, Europe). Everything is clean and smart, yet warm and welcoming. Every member of staff has a courteously knowledgeable understand of what the diner needs. Food is freshly cooked to individual order - and well presented and served. A really top quality restaurant , in every sense. A must for the discerning diner - whether tourist or local.

This was our second trip to a Michael Deane restaurant in Belfast and we were not disappointed. Having tried the more formal setting of his restaurant in the university district, this bistro style restaurant in the centre of the city provided just the right ambience and style for a Saturday night out. The food once again was superb and the service first class. The added benefit of live music provided in a way that was pleasant to listen to but not so loud that you couldn't talk made the experience perfect.

Food, wine and service were all impeccable. The place was busy, but not crowded, on a hot summer's evening, and the staff were attentive but not overly so. My starter of tomato broth with lobster was sparkling and richly flavoured, while my partner's beef carpaccio was the best I have ever had - the beef was the most tender I have ever known. We both had mains of fish - hake for him, plaice for me; once more, well sourced, sensitively cooked and delicately seasoned. The desserts too - so often a disappointment, even in good restaurants - were excellent. A delight from start to finish.

Just had lunch using a £75 gift voucher that i received as a birthday present, my two sisters and i were looking forward to a special dining experience only to be extremely disappointed. We only had a "main" course each, i had fish measuring about 3" x4" which came with summed vegetables - a couple of miniscule carrots and tunips the size of raddises and some carrot purrie wiped acoross the plate. My sisters had the steak, had bigger burgers and the chicken of equally small portions. This meal with a bottle of basic white wine to almost £90 - extortionate for very small portions of poor quality food and they had the cheek to add a 10% service charge to the bill. Would not recommend it to anyone and feel cheated that my daughter spent her hard earned money on the voucher.

booked meal for 8 pm tonight, saturday, arrived on time and were ask what we would like to drink so ordered a bottle of prosecco as i love theirs, brought a different bottle, knew as soon as i tasted it, it was a spumante but waiter (paul) argued that it was only one they had ever served, wrong answer, i have bought it from you on numerous occasions and both my husband and i knew it was different bottle. paul then walked off and basically ignored us for 1 hour, he talked to numerous customers but did nothing else. by 9.40pm, 1 hour 40 mins after we arrived at restaurant we ask for our coats, we had been served water in this time. the table beside us also left, they had been recommended by a friend from tourist board down south so will have plenty to say to their friend. not only did i leave starving, i also left very angry, we have been in this restaurant lots of times and been pleased with food but always found the service lacking in areas but tonight was a complete waste of time and energy. we had a 30 mile round trip to get to belfast and back home, and what for? a glass of water and bad service apparently. i worked from 9.00 this morning to 6.00 tonight to rush home and get ready, to rush to belfast, to drive home starving.

For the main some guys went for the fish of the day on the blackboard and some went for the traditional fish and chips . Everyone enjoyed the mains .A lovely cheese board rounded everything off and excellent coffee. We are big fans of tasting menus in all the restaurants we visit as on the whole they give a showcase of the best the restaurant has to offer. Sadly, it really saddens me to write, the tasting menu at Deanes is very mediocre. We arrived tonight & got the menus, the tasting menu only shows the main ingredient on each course & read as follows, Scallop, Foie Gras, Bass, Beef, Dessert, Cheese. It looked good & was priced at £55 + £30 for wines which we both went for.I must add that we eat regularly at Deanes various restaurants are are big fans. However when our Scallop first taster arrived, it was just the scallop off the Seafood bar menu that we have eaten 20 times or more, we expected something different so were very disappointedSadly, the Foie Gras second taste was again what you can order on the lunch menu so again no surprise & disappointingThe Bass with Japanese mushroom was beautiful & it rejuvenated us both into thinking this might be worthwhile. Sadly when the beef came out, we were thrown back into the mediocre.Although the beef was cooked to perfection, the rest of the dish was poor, underseasoned & tasteless, 2 types of mushroom duxelle when the dish cried out for a potatoThe dessert was the stand out dish of the meal, a beautiful chocolate mousse with coconut sorbet, gorgeous. The last course was cheese. We had a good mix of Irish & French cheese but unfortunately served with normal shop bought crackers that weren't really good enough for home never mind a top restaurant. A very sad addition to a wanna be top nosh tasting menu. When you can serve bread as good as the ones we were served before our courses why can you not bake a homemade cracker??Overall, we left after paying £215 for 2 people feeling underwhelmed. On the plus side, whoever matches the wines with the food really knows their stuff but sadly 5 out of 10 overall, the food let the wine down. I don't think this tasting menu shows really what Michael Deane has to offer, it's a lazy menu

If you're going to have your kitchen on view try to look more efficient. Clearly stronger management required

Against my better judgement I was persuaded to go to Deanes Deli again. We had the so-called "sirloin" steak with chips. The steak at £20 was on the poor side and I would swear that the small handfuls of chips served were processed. The peppered sauce was salty. Together with a bottle of house wine we paid almost £40 each (including tip). Overall poor quality and poor value for money. This time I am definitely not returning to Dea nes-I already gave up on Dea nes at Queens some time ago. No wonder there were only a few tables occupied the other night. Belfast diners deserve better -especially from someone who is meant to be in the forefront of the Backin Belfast campaign.

Love seafood and know that Michael Deane does great food so went for lunch with my wife yesterday. Firstly, on arrival, the waitress could not have been less interested. Showed us to a table, left us menus and then forgot about us. It set the tone for the service for the remainder of the meal.Specials on the board included a fish pie for £10 which I was considering until I saw it being served to another table. Think ramakin and you're in the right ballpark.I went for the chowder from the £6.50 menu and, assuming that it wasn't going to be a huge portion (I was right), a portion of fries. My wife had the prawns also from the lunch menu and although they tasted good she basically got 6 prawns (£1 a prawn - good work Michael Deane!!) with some bread and my fries (£3.50) were a portion of frozen chips.Add on a small bottle of beer and a glass of wine (and a 10% service charge - brass neck alert) and it came to £32. Reputations only last so long. We'll certainly not be back.

Myself and my wife went here at the weekend compliments of daughter No1 who came up with the great idea of getting us a gift voucher. Had never been here before so quite looked forward to it. For starters we got a seafood chowder and salted squid with chilli. Both were absolutely outstanding - and I mean outstanding. For mains the Mrs got the muscles and I went for the sirloin with triple cooked chips - again both outstanding - especially the steak which was done to perfection. We decided to indulge some more and and got the old sticky toffee pudding (a minor let down - not quite enough sticky toffee) but my wife had a sorbet with raspberry liquor - and that was unreal - plain, simple but the taste was amazing. We also downed two bottles of wine as well as me having a few beers. Outstanding meal that cost around £121 (not our worst although they do add 10% to your bill for service). See some dodgy reviews but I have to say this is simply one of the nicest meals I've had in the centre of Belfast. Service was very good also and overall I'm looking forward to my next visit.

This is reputed to be one of the better eateries in Belfast. Alas I am sad to say it did not live up to my expectations or that of the guests who indulged with me. The best way I can categorise the review is under the headings, service, food and billing. With regard to the service, it was quite poor. Initially it took a good period of time before our coats were collected or menus issued, and the place wasn't even very busy. Although our group was large (20). We were only assigned 1 waiter and this resulted in long delays during the service of courses and between courses. At one stage it we were left 55 mins between courses. Now for the food: My starter consisted of the goats cheese tartlet with poached pear. I could best describe its appearance as cottage cheese on ryvita and the taste was only ok. The main consisted of braised shin of beef in a bolognaise sauce which looked like a mars bar with some tomato segments on top. Although the beef melted in the mouth, the sauce lacked flavour. The dessert of chocolate tart was the only saving grace. As for the billing, 2 of our group had to get their bills adjusted due to extra drinks being included.Overall, I would say more effort needed for the prices they charge

Attended a private function for approximately 40 upstairs at Deanes and had, quite honestly, one of the worst restaurant experiences in a long time.Tables were booked for 745 and the starter arrived at 945 The cheese tartlet resembled supermarket fayre on a Rivita board. The main couse beef was tasty but at our table, 9 main couses came out together, one came 15 minutes later (having asked the stafff where it was) and the sides came 10 minutes after this - I don't think the chef had a cold dish in his head when preparing the menu. Can't comment of the dessert as by 1150 it hadn't come - staff seemed to give up serving. They had plates left but did not ahve a clue as to who was to get what so some got nothing! Personnaly I was fed up having to ask for things so said my goodbyes and left.In terms of staff there were three in the room to deal with 40+ covers. The food seemed to be being cooked downstairs and brought upstairs by some poor soul running up and down. It gave the impression that the chef and half the waiting staff hadn't showed upThe whole evening gave left me with the impression that the restaurant didn't care or want this type of business - no doubt the takings were good and the drinks bill horendous so maybe that is their business model. Certainly, things got worse as the drink flowed and time went on. I was driving so was able to observe what occurred. This even went down to taking unfinished bottles of water from the table and replacing them with full ones - how much a bottle?Couldn't comment to any of the staff leaving as nobody batted an eyelid as you walked out...So, downstairs, who knows, but upstairs, I would strongly advise against.

Portions are skimpy which is alright when there is originality and unique flavour however the food was nothing special, in fact quite bland, even the chips! Lobster and chocolate fondant undercooked. Service was very slow at the start but evenly paced for main & dessert. Don't quite understand why Mr Deane hovers in front the food pass all night?
