I visited Summer Lodge with a friend to celebrate her birthday. We ordered a cream tea which was advertised as freshly baked scones daily. We were shown to the drawing room and sat down. Then a waiter came to ask what tea we would like and tried to joke with us which was not necessary. The scones arrived and were frozen in the middle! So much for freshly baked scones! When I complained the waiter then said ' so much for our freshly baked scones!' Then joked that we must have got them out of our handbags! Totally inappropriate. Not a great experience for parting with £34 for 2 cream teas! The building and setting is very lovely. A shame that our experience was not up to expected standards.

To celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary we booked for Sunday lunch and it was a fantastic experience. Food was extremely good and beautifully presented. All the staff were so professional but also really friendly. As it was a scorching hot day (and also because there was a large party in the restaurant that included very noisy children!) they asked if we would like to eat outside. We did and it was perfect.

Although staying at the Acorn Inn, the Lodge’s sister hotel-restaurant a minute up the street, we ate dinner here twice. It was magnificent. The Summer Lodge’s restaurant is producing absolutely top quality cuisine, up there with Britain’s best. The attention to detail on every dish that emerged from the kitchen was extreme and faultless, everything so beautifully presented that it almost seemed criminal to start eating it! The ingenious combination of flavours, textures and colours set us on an exciting gastronomic adventure as we savoured the chef’s creations bite by bite. As one would expect in an establishment of this calibre, the service by the delightful staff was perfect, beyond criticism. Even the drinks we had on the terrace before dining with a small tray of unique tasty accompaniments. Then there were the amuse-gueules before the starters and a little pre-dessert before the, er, desserts! Everything wonderful. And here’s a tip: the cheese board, comprising 15 or 20 local cheeses (mostly Dorset and Cornwall), is not to be missed so either skip the starter (as we did the second time) or make sure you leave room for it. Excellent wine list too, appropriately expensive, enhanced by spotting the delicious Pago De Los Capellanes from Spain’s Ribera Del Duero region, a bodega we first encountered in Madrid’s Calle de Toledo 30 years ago and have regularly returned to ever since. If you’re staying at the Acorn for several nights, budget for at least one meal here!

Have dined here on a number of occasions previously and looked forward to this visit (whilst staying at Hotel, reviewed separately). Disappointed this time, particularly given price. Missed the presence and knowledge of Eric, the Sommelier (now at The Sailing). Only 1 type of bread (sun-dried tomato) offered, but they found us some slightly stale sourdough instead (seemed to have been warmed in microwave). No amuse-bouche. Portions were very small. Starters of cured salmon and rabbit were ok, but not particularly special. Plaice main course, served with gooseberries and rhubarb was strange: too much fruit and flavour was too strong for the tiny piece of plaice. Lamb was bland. Pre-dessert (coffee mousse) was delicious. Cheeseboard was good. We knew the Executive Chef had been replaced, but expected food of similar quality and quantity, so were disappointed. Felt there was cost-saving. Then realised the Hotel is on the market. Won't go back until under new ownership.

I use to love Summer Lodge and today I felt disappointed. The afternoon Tea was not the usual high standard. Presentation was poor. The sausage roll was lacking pastry and overload of meat no garnish. No garnish with sandwiches and they were few. The sweet pastries were sickly mostly sugar. Scones moderate. Wasps were so annoying that we couldn’t sit and ponder. Not the hotels fault.Although they are said to be an enormous problem by the Head Waiter. Sad that we won’t be back and actually wouldn’t recommend. Staff were good but under pressure. Sorry Summer Lodge but you need to up the game. Five star?

Came here the other afternoon to celebrate my birthday with three friends and it was a wonderful occasion. From the moment we arrived we were attended to by polite, professional and efficient staff. Our lovely French waiter was especially lovely and very amusing! One of my group is gluten intolerant and she was prepared her own food all served, like ours, on a very pretty 3 tier cake stand - everything was delicious. We were given copious pots of tea having started with a bottle of fizzy 🥂🍾. Would recommend to anyone who wants an elegant extravagant treat.

Lovely gardens, but the food was very disappointing. When pointed out to the restaurant manager we were advised chefs do not use salt which is why the food may have been tasteless !!! Very surprising for a Red Carnation Hotel, not to be repeated.

Absolutely dreadful lunch. Starters were OK (but very pricey - I had 'Blue Vinny, caramelised walnuts and chicory' - about 10g of cheese, three walnuts and a few leaves of chicory with a drizzle of balsamic glaze). Had the roast beef - medium rare - as a main course - very tough and difficult to cut even with a steak knife, disgusting re-heated roast potatoes, dry Yorkshire pudding and 'cauliflower cheese' - undercooked cauliflower with a smidgeon of cheese sauce wafted over the top. Cheese course was OK but the Francis had seen much better days. Very noisy table behind us and we couldn't hear ourselves speak. Screaming child in the next door room. What should have been a treat for Father's Day was extremely disappointing and overpriced.

We came here a few days ago for an afternoon cream tea. The staff were very friendly . The decor seems very dated in most areas but the lounge area is still nice if rather traditional. The main reason for my review is that I had gluten free scones etc & they were extremely stodgy & heavy , so much so I couldn’t eat all of them . The tea was very good. However the scone was heavy & unappetising & the jam seemed to be bought in & not homemade . I did voice my dissatisfaction to a member of staff but I was told that they shouldn’t be like that but nothing else.

We have had many memorable lunches and suppers at Summer Lodge since moving from London to Dorset, it was always the go to place for a celebration. Honeymoon, Birthdays and anniversary’s. The staff were always helpful, friendly and accommodating. The fabulous wine waiter would recommend the best that he could offer and the food was always exquisite and culinary outstanding. Today however was quite a disappointment. Standards have fallen drastically, gone is the attention to detail, and the staff really have not a clue how to serve their customers that are forking out a tremendous amount of money to eat in this establishment. Service was slow and when it came…we were met with a very impatient and arrogant man (I believe his name was Phil) I don’t know where he gained his grades at charm school?? The service was not at all what we have previously experienced. We ordered starters…no napkins, (don’t forget this is supposed to be a 5 * hotel) they arrived and to be honest the goats cheese mousse was pitiful, in total it was half a dessert spoon of mousse and loads of garnish, the mackerel was a slither with a scrape of garlic purée….it was ok but, nothing to write home about. Then the mains arrived……beef cheek and mash that was totally crucified. The duck….again was just duck flavoured pulp…the only saving grace was the dessert, lemon posset, this was really good. The service was substandard and not attentive at all, attention to detail is no longer there. I feel sad about this as SL was always our destination place to go for that ‘Special occasion’ It’s hellish expensive and you should expect more. Standards are very very low and the staff no longer come from Europe….enough said about that. All in all we won’t be returning to what was once a very special place for us.

We stayed at the hotel and loved both our dinner and breakfast experiences. Dinner was a high quality experience, with excellent service and fabulous food in a beautiful dining room. The Duck and the Venison mains were a highlight, as were the Souffle and cheese selection desserts. Breakfast was everything we want from a top quality hotel, wide ranging buffet selection, (juices, fruit, cured meats & hams, cheese, smoked salmon, pastries), with delicious cooked and staff who were happy to provide anything extra requested. Smoked Salmon was excellent and the local sausages were fantastic. Loved the Eggs Benedict.

Whislt staying at the Acorn Inn down the road in charming Evershot, we went for tea at the Summer Lodge. This is a sister hotel of the Acorn Inn. Oh wow...what a perfect venue for a celebratory tea or just for a little bit of self-endulgence! This is a must...absolutely delicious from the savoury platters that we had for our tea (we don't have a sweet tooth) to the accompanying champagnes and wine. We did admire the neighbouring table's treats and sweet delights of pastries, cakes and scones...all made and served to perfection with absolute artistry. We could see the satisfaction and joy on their faces too.

Disappointed. Usually a keen visitor of the restaurant. With a reputation of fine dining, I was disappointed with the poor menu choices (no Christmas choice), raw sprouts served and turkey which was not white meat but brown and clearly rolled not carved. The manager did offer free desserts and coffee which was welcomed, but did not compensate overall luncheon disappointment.

Regardless of any concern about feeling out of place this French fine dining Restaurant is second to none. From the minute you park the welcome is first class. Pre dinner drinks can be had in the whiskey or drawing rooms, both are fabulously decorated and the whiskey room is more an exhibition space for the drink itself. The dinning area is classic Staley home still with a mix of seating areas and great table decorations. Service is second to none with a stunning menu and wine list. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and detailed information on food origin or wine recommendation are available instantly if asked. I would highly recommend this as a great place for that celebration dinner or just afternoon tea, either way you will not be disappointed.

Very nice location and attentive staff. However the afternoon tea was very disappointing. £73 for two adults and a small child meant it was very overpriced for the average quality and meagre quantity of the food. Two rounds of small sandwiches, cakes that lacked refinement, taste and which can be bettered by most supermarket tray bakes, scones that were oven-baked that fell apart as soon as you picked them up and clotted cream that was so hard it couldn't be spread. Real shame as it's very nice venue.

Taking a long weekend in Weymouth and decided to treat ourselves with afternoon tea somewhere a bit nicer than the local offerings. Searched for a while for the best in the area and Summer lodge looked the most fabulous online. The service, the room, and the teah and cakes were lovely. The presentation was not as nice as any of the other tables, ours was served on black plates on a wonky silver mount whereas each ithe the other tables were served with beautiful bone china and gorgeous silver mounts. I had noticed also that other tables were offered fresh pots of team where we weren't. It's the small things that differentiate afternoon teas and I was a little upset when I noticed our presentation was below the standard everyone else had. Saying that I would come back if I were ever in the area again, I'd probably just ask for it to be served like everyone elses!

What a joy it is to dine here. We love this place for its quintessentially old English charm. The welcome and acknowledgement from all the staff, including housekeeping who were walking across the courtyard as we locked up our car. Escorted into the building and settled down by the fire with drinks and menus. We enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch - not just a meal, but an experience. Our wine was topped up without asking, water frequently replenished without asking, everything brought to the table on time in the correct order. There was no need whatsoever for us to catch a waiters eye for anything. It was all thought out and executed perfectly. The food is sublime. We curled up on the very soft sofas after lunch by another roaring fire and simply didn't want to leave. I could live here! Not cheap, but worth every single penny.

We ate here while staying at the hotel and our booking for 4 reduced to two at short notice due to one person rushing into hospital. The restaurant was very accommodating and seated us at the table for four anyway. I am pescetarian and wanted a vegetarian starter but there was limited choice, so I chose a veggie main course, which they agreed to serve as a starter. My partner celebrated his birthday the next night and the restaurant surprised him with a little mini box of chocolates tied with ribbon. And of course the expected Happy Birthday message written in chocolate on his desert plate, which he scraped off (chocoholic!). We had aperitifs in the comfortable lounge before being seated and coffee in there afterwards by the log fire. There was a large group dining in the restaurant on our second night but service was not affected and they were seated in the inner part of the restaurant so it wasn't noisy.

This place should have a Michelin star. Try the unbelievable Shepherds Pie! And they do great fish and super desserts.

In an attractive Dining Room we had an excellent Dinner from a wide embracing menu with good cooking. Two points to be made - firstly when in deep conversation with friends great care needs to be taken when serving to not interrupt conversations too often and secondly when advertising mushrooms to be served with the delicious Filet which are not available tell us we are going to understand and not be offended.

Been here today as a surprise and I had no idea what to expect as had never heard of the place as we do not live locally. The service was exceptional from really knowledgable caring staff, the atmosphere was highly relaxing with no pressure at any time, the food was fantastic and faultless. As value for money, the lunch menu is really good and unbelievable if you look at the overall attentive service, atmosphere etc etc. Congratulations to staff front and back of house on a great job

My husband and I booked for a special birthday treat. We’d come before (about 10 years ago) and loved it. I was hopeful I still felt the same!

Summer Lodge never fails to impress. From the initial greeting to the final coffees we never want to leave. At £40 per head our 3 course lunch was a steal. Taken in the beautiful conservatory looking at the manicured garden our party could not have been happier. Eric helped us choose our wine. We are always braver when he advises and we love the change. He is a superstar in the wine world! Thanks to all the team. We will of course be back.

Lovely setting for the restaurant with the food matching the standard of the dining room. A large conservatory is part of the main dining room with lovely views over the well kept garden.

We ate in the restaurant as part of the deal we had in late-November. Everything was fresh and new ideas in cuisine.

Beautiful setting with excellent service throughout. We had the seven course tasting menu. All the courses were to our liking, sensible sizes, perfectly cooked and well spaced out - well done!

The restaurant is delightful and country style. The food is superb and the taster menu very interesting and gives you a flavour of many dishes. You can have drinks first in the lounge and relax before going into dinner, a wonderful experience with superb staff.

My wife had arranged for a 50th birthday meal here for 4 of us. Warm welcome on arrival from the Maitre'D. Shown to the lounge for pre meal drinks and nibbles plus the Chefs special starter tasters. In the main restaurant our table had been nicely decorated. There was a card from the management with a gift of chocolate truffles for my birthday which was a very kind and unexpected gesture. The meal itself is a great experience with food to die for and palette cleansers between the courses. Starters of mackerel, Portland crab and scallops were delicious. We all had Duck as a main course and it was cooked perfectly and so tasty and tender. The chef is obviously a master at work. the various sweets we had were all superb.Wine and water is kept topped up during the meal without the waiters and waitresses being too overbearing. The whole experience makes for a very enjoyable and memorable evening. A great way to celebrate a milestone birthday.

Absolutely lovely place, my partner and I were celebrating and went for a nice date here. Great food with lovely decor, chef even refunded us the price of our desserts as they weren’t satisfied with the presentation (still tasted amazing). Will definitely be back again this summer, would recommend.
