The scone I had was so hard it didn't break even when I banged it on the table. I spoke to a young lady. who exchanged but replaced it with exactly the same hard scone I left it. I was told that they were all cooked at the same time ? How long ago??. Also the diary was £3 dearer than the exact same diary I found in another shop. I'll spend more carefully in future .

We have been customers of the restaurant in its many forms for 35 years and the standard has always been great. However we have found over the last year that the standard has dropped, including the coffee which used to be so good but we no longer order. We decided today to give it another chance and ordered the Sunday roast. However the food was so poor that we wanted to make people aware of our experience before they spent £13 per head. The roast chicken itself was OK, along with the red cabbage, carrots and broccoli, however the winter mash (or mush) was completely bland and left an unpleasant taste, the hard block of stuffing was also flavourless and hard to cut and the small chipolata tasted like the cheapest sausage you could buy. The roast potatoes were so hard on the outside they were difficult to cut and the gravy was also flavourless and there was very little on the plate. We were both left with such an unpleasant, bland taste in our mouths that we had to go to a coffee shop over the road to get rid of the taste. I am very disappointed and sorry to write this but we will certainly not be visiting the restaurant again especially as there are so many other eateries in the area of a very high standard. On the plus side, the restaurant looks good, the counter staff are very pleasant and welcoming and everywhere looks clean. Hope this serves as a wake up call!

We are regular customers of otter nurseries restaurant, ant the coffee and walnut cake was a firm favourite of ours. But with no notice they have changed the recipe. It was bitter and the cake itself was very heavy. I am aware that the last cake was brought in and not made on site. We have also been aware that the prices have increased and the quality seems to have gone downhill! The late especially was only luke warm!

We had lunch here in a very nice setting. I and my husband chose tomato and basil soup (£5.25 each) with bread roll (£0.95 each) and as a main meal ham, egg and chips (£10.95 each) and to drink pot of tea (£2.25 each). The soup and bread was to die for, extremely tasty and the ham was proper ham, very tasty meal. We found this place is very popular as you can buy there plants, very good choice of clothes, hats etc., kitchen ware etc. It's place I will recommend to visit.

When we arrived at the garden centre we went for a coffee then a look round. We returned later for lunch, both times we were served by a lovely young man called Brock, he was pleasant and polite. We have eaten here several times when we have been in the area, I feel the menu isn't as extensive as it used to be, they used to do a lovely ploughmans lunch. This time we had jacket potato with ham and cheese and ham, egg and chips., food was nice and hot.

We stopped at Ottery Nursery on our way home to Devon on a bank holiday Monday. Decided to have lunch in their café. It was quite busy. Seemed to be lots of queuing, lots of people and lots of staff. The only menu appeared to be the board on the wall. Ordered a toasted ciabatta roll. We sat at a table and it was not too long before our food was served. My ciabatta was OK with a reasonable amount of filling but it was quite bland. It was served with a small side salad and some crisps. The cafe was clean and large. Tables were well spaced apart. The service was good.

My husband and I visited for dinner today (Friday 3rd March). It was a quieter day, which was nice, lots of people but no families with kids so quite quiet which was nice; you don’t always want noise. We queued and I saw the desert selection. There was a few nice cakes but not the choice there used to be. The scones are still not the huge ones they used to be. Not as many home baked options they used to have. Anyway, we ordered Tuna sandwiches, large portion of chips, tea, coffee and two pieces of marmalade cake. We seated and it wasn’t long before the food arrived. The sandwiches were lovely. Loads of filling, generously sized. There was a small side salad, I can’t eat it but it looked ok. There were also crisps but I didn’t eat those. The chips were gorgeous…what an improvement. I said they tasted like fish, turns out there was some fried batter in the bowl, so obviously frying fish in the same oil…I tell you what, it’s a game changer. They tasted amazing…keep that going. The coffee was good, the tea was good except it doesn’t stay warm, goes cold quite quickly. The cake…wow, so nice. We were stuffed after eating that, so much so that we didn’t have dinner that evening. Very enjoyable and nice to see improvement.

Recently had a very good breakfast here. We used to visit regularly for lunch pre covid and loved their home cooked meals served with real veg. So we decided to try lunch again. Choice was very limited. There was a light bites option which was mainly sandwiches. The “main meals” listed were disappointing. 1/2 the meals majored on jacket potatoes and soup - which should really be on the light bites menu. Remaining meals consisted of a curry, a pasty, scampi and chips and a cottage pie. As cottage pie was the only option with veg we chose that. We were VERY disappointed. Hardly any meat, potato was liquid mush and heavily salted. Veg was cold and dry. Otter what has happened to you? You used to be second to none but this was terrible. We won’t be back for lunch. Having said that - the breakfast we had a couple of weeks ago was fine - perhaps you should add an all day breakfast to your menu. Not ideal but better than on offer today.

The Otter nurseries have got to be one of the best places to visit at any time of the year. They have a great restaurant with a very good menu. The staff are excellent and friendly, the food is good and well-presented. The cost is also very reasonable. The nursery always puts on an excellent Christmas display which is both colorful and bright. Highly recommended for spending a couple of hours looking around the gift store and garden area.

It has been eleven months since our last visit to the restaurant, we were disappointed back then, however, things have improved no end. The whole place is alive with customers in all departments. Back are the missing tables in the restaurant, the efficient serving staff and not least a decent menu. My fish in beer batter was perfectly cooked, moist flakes of fish in a crispy batter and tartare sauce that is unsurpassed elsewhere. My wife had soup and roll saying that it was quite filling. The cost was not cheap, prices are rising everywhere, we were happy with price and quality. Thank you to the management for getting back on track after a very difficult couple of years.

We were on holiday at Finlake and on two visits to Teignmouth we called into the Otter for a light lunch of a sandwich and beverage.Loved the Garden Centre, the layout, the plants and garden "products"for sale, and the whole range of other items displayed.Everthing was to our liking, the food, restuarnt and service provided, Very impressed with it all. However, on our second visit we both had tea which was two little tea pots, smallish cups and saucers and a larger pot of hot water to refill the little teapots with only one used tea bag in them.We asked for a second teabag and was curtly told it would be 50p each which we querid and again curtly told to let it stand longer and it was company policy.4 cups from one tea bag !!!!.The lady serving us was abrupt and in my view rude.To make matters worse,my wife is in a wheelchair so I had to leave the tray of beverage on the counter while pushing my wife to our table, set her in and then go back down to collect the tea tray.Needless to say we were not impressed. The sandwiches with crisps and salad were very good and the staff in the "upstairs"resturant were helpful and courtious. We enjoyed our visits but next time take our own teabag . 50 PENCE FOR A TEABAG IS OUTRAGIOUS

Have visited Otter nursery at Ottery St Mary for many years. A highlight used to be their restaurant which used to serve a large selection of home made meals including breakfasts, roasts (midweek as well as Sundays), homemade pies, honey roast chicken. And served with a variety of vegetables and accompaniments, followed by delicious desserts - apple pies, trifles etc. No more. We have visited several times post covid and had hoped that some of the old favourites would return. Sadly menu choices are still very limited and nothing available with vegetables other than peas. No desserts and the cakes while Ok are half the size they were. Think this may be a sign of the times but we no longer feel it’s worth our while travelling just for the plants -which we could get locally. Staff friendly and helpful. Food cooked well and appetising - just a bit boring.

Well, I thought I’d give this place another chance now things are more or less normal after covid. This place used to be brilliant. I’d go every Sunday for a roast beef dinner, it was so good. But those days are gone, unfortunately. My husband and I visited on 9/7/22. We went for a light lunch as we had been shopping at the garden centre. I had a beef and onion sandwich. My husband had broccoli soup and a roll. The soup was bland, no flavour, hardly any seasoning. The roll was ok. My leather, sorry, beef sandwich had soggy bread and the driest beef that was difficult to swallow. It’s the same beef they use on the roast dinners, but it’s fine when it’s swimming in gravy, not so much on cheap bread. I didn’t touch the salad on the plate and the crisps looked like the value ones I could buy at any supermarket, the bad parts of a good batch of crisps. The staff try their best generally. Apart from an older lady who was ‘cleaning’ in the restaurant and who had to tell a lady to sit elsewhere as she was cleaning that area and proceeded to talk about her behind her back to another staff member. The place has lost its buzz.

We've heard a lot about how good the Ottery garden centre is but until recently had not had the time to visit, my diary gets very busy, very quickly, unfortunately. When we arrived we found that the car park across the road from the garden centre had ample disabled parking spaces, you have to cross the road to gain access to the store, so look both ways... Once inside the garden centre, there is so much to see, we had the intention of buying a few new plants, maybe a new pot and most importantly a new bee hotel for this year's visitors. After a while of looking around, we found our bee hotel and some bonus Harry Potter Lego sets for my wife's collection and were just about to head to the tills when we noticed a large metal stag sculpture. As my family crest features a stag, we have a lot of stag related items in the house, but this really took my fancy, I didn't even look at the price, I just approached a member of staff who was most helpful in getting the stag prepared for us to take away. We got the stag to the car and after lowering the seats we were able to squeeze it in. What I did not realise for a while was that I had hung my walking stick on the tree by the car while I loaded it in. It wasn't until we had driven to Seaton (about 16 miles) and went to go for a walk that I realised it was left behind... So we drove back to collect it, and luckily it was still hanging on the tree. In terms of facilities at the garden centre, there was a café which was serving a deliciously smelling selection of cakes, curry and jacket potatoes. Outside in the yard, we found some disabled toilets and the area is quite flat and easy to navigate. We will certainly be going back, as I want to add some more statues to the gardens.

On a recent visit I was unable to find a gravy dinner on the menu, so I chose a vegetarian curry. Sweet potato and butternut squash were the main ingredients (both really cheap), a popadom and white rice. The curry was about 2/3rds expected size and the rice about twice as much as required for one person. Flavour was ok but the price was over £10 for ingredients costing no more than a couple of pounds. On several recent visits I have left feeling that the price is too high and the quantity and quality is too low. Looking for somewhere else to lunch out.

Firstly I have to commend them on the measures in place in the restaurant to deal with the Covid situation. Lots of posters and instructions re the QR codes, lots of sanitisers and an outdoor area for queuing (not sure that would’ve been much fun in the rain though). Tables are very spread out, more so than any other restaurant we have been in recently, so we felt very comfortable and safe there. But the food let it down a bit. Hubby had fish and chips which was good but my steak pasty was not a good choice. It was smaller than I expected, the pastry was soggy as though it had been microwaved rather than oven cooked and inside the veg was hard and undercooked and the meat was in two massive lumps one of which was more gristle than meat. It came with a choice of chips or salad. I chose chips which were plentiful - in fact too many for the small pasty so fewer chips and a little side salad would’ve made a nicer, more balanced meal rather than just a choice between the two. Staff were poised to clean the tables as soon as you stood up to leave. A good system.

The cutlery and condiments were delivered by the waiter with the food so nobody diving in to help themselves. The food we chose was a Fish Pie and a Chicken and Ham Pie and both were excellent and piping hot and we followed this with a rocky road and chocolate brownie.which were “naughty but nice”. My boyfriend and I decided to take a trip here on the bus from Exeter. I checked on their website about their cafe as I am dairy free and it assured me that they cater for diary free, gluten feee, vegan etc. Luckily we were not in a hurry as there was a huge queue when we arrived. When we finally reached the front, I asked the young male waiter what dairy free options were available. He looked quite confused by this and had to go and ask a colleague which took a good few minutes. He came back and told me that one particular cake had no diary in it. I asked which one and he pointed to a cake that was mixed with all the other cakes which I thought didn’t have much logic behind it whatsoever as this would now not be suitable for anybody with a dairy allergy like me. When I asked if there was anything else he said “ummm, grapes?” As if he wasn’t very sure. I accepted the grapes as by this point I was pretty desperate for anything and I just wanted to sit down. He then realised that he could not charge me for the grapes alone so I couldn’t have that either thanks. When I made it clear I was not very happy he responded with “we don’t really have very many dairy feee options” and chuckled. Terrible service. Will not return

Of an average costing £11:90 a meal. Tea was roughly about £2:40. You queued and waited till you were called. Several people serving. Took your order and then gave you a number. Yes we had to wait a little while but it was worth it. I had fish pie as first choice curry, was sold out. It came with vegetables and they were not hard nor too soft. Sister in law had to wait a while for hers to arrive. The lady cleaning the tables and collecting the crockery went and had a look for her. It came within a second. They made sure everything was alright for her and kept checking it was all ok. Such service and organization. Thoroughly recommend this cafe.

Called in on passing, this is a v large garden centre with a huge restaurant which had the look of a motorway service station, limited menu, we ate the steak and Stilton turnover and baked potatoe with tuna, huge portions of food which just tasted OK with the turnover dry and over cooked, more quantity over quality.

I often meet my friend here because it’s central to where we both live. The nursery and shop itself is really pleasant and quite reasonably priced. The coffee shop is usually busy, but today it was exceptionally quiet for 2pm. However there wasn’t much of a selection of treats and the service as always was so slow. It’s the same every time. Slow and the people serving are always so miserable. You’re lucky if you get a smile or friendly welcome. Such a shame.

This used to be the place to go for a good lunch and even better puddings! The pavlova used to be amazing but not any more. The portions have shrunk and the prices risen! Fair enough times change and inflation has to be taken into account but it’s just got too big a concern here now to serve food like they used too. Go across the road to The Joshua Tree, homemade and a lot better value!!!

My partner and I recently visited the garden centre restaurant for a light lunch. When we arrived it was 2pm on a Sunday, there were plenty of servers and food runners and we were served quickly. The cakes and afternoon teas looked delicious but we wanted something a bit more substantial so ordered a gluten free sandwich, a panini and two homemade sparking elderflower drinks. We had to wait at least five minutes at the counter just to receive our drinks (no idea why) which didn’t taste that great. Our food then took at least another 40 minutes for TWO SANDWICHES!

I have been here sporadically when visiting the area over about 10 years. It used to be lots of really interesting different goods with a really good comfortable cafe. This time I aimed my visit for lunch time. It is now a big supermarket with a super sized cafe, I have no idea what the food was like - being so disappointed I left, the whole atmosphere has changed to being one of parting customers from their money in the quickest possible time - sad

Great place to eat good plain grub plenty of it. No complaints there. However, we like to go for Sunday breakfast but it is spoilt by the continual blowing from ceiling installed Air Conditioning all year round. This results in your meal and tea being cold before you can eat it. This is OK for salad but useless if you have a hot meal and when you are eating a good old fashioned English Breakfast it is clod and greasy when you are half way through. Have reqested that it be turned off but nothing ever happens.

I was so looking forward to visiting this nursery. They had many plants, bulbs, seeds bit and bobs, mostly at a very inflated prices! Now the cafe...hmmm, not great, no cream tea for us, so had a savoury tea, oh dear, the bacon and cheese scone was hard, stale possibly better warm? But the cafe is large, grey, uninspiring. Having a garden centre couldn't it be brought into the cafe, make a garden oasis....staff in the cafe neutral, neither friendly or rude.

We visited today as a mixed family of 6 after hearing recommendations. We were sorely disappointed with the food and the coffee. Chicken burger dripped grease from the cheese and was really bland. The ‘hot’ quiche was cold in the middle, it needed to be microwaved more! Kids’ meal was tiny for the price and we had asked for no vegetables (our son has autism and needs his veg serving in a side bowl, so it’s always best to say ‘no’ to the veg!) but his meal came with peas, cue a mini melt down. The coffee was vile and had to be replaced. The cheese, potato and onion pasty meal would have needed a forensic team to find the cheese and onion. Sandwiches were ok. The customer service from the staff was good, and made me give a rating of two rather than one. Bland food, expensive for what it was and we even left our insipid chips! Such a let down.

Hadn't eaten here for a while. Took my son for a 'treat'. Spent £17 for the toughest 'devon beef' sandwich I have ever had the misfortune of trying to eat (a miserly amount with hardly discernible horseradish), and a very lightly filled cheese panini that was soft because it had been microwaved, not grilled/toasted!, with coke and a milk chocolate. Servers didn't smile or try to engage. A very different quality of food and staff attitude to what I remember. Looks like a management change. Not at all impressed.

We visited the Riveria for lunch today, our first visit for 8 years and I have to say that I was very disappointed. I ordered cod and chips at a hotel next to the sea but I was given a piece of battered fish straight out of the "Bird's Eye" mould and not freshly cooked as I expected from a hotel of some repute. This was nowhere near the quality I enjoy regularly from my local Wetherspoons!

Great venue for lunch, always busy, good food at reasonable prices. Until today, prices have risen, the place was half empty, the food still good but not exceptional so why the price hike? My breaded plaice with chips, peas and tartare sauce was £16.99! It was nice enough, not outstanding and available elsewhere in Sidmouth for a lot less. If they want more profit and less customers I think this approach will work, we will think twice before returning as there are many other places to eat locally that offer better value for similar food.

We enjoyed our night at this well run, clean and friendly hotel. The three course evening meal was freshly prepared and delicious. Our room was spotless and well presented. We both are surprised this is only a two star rated hotel, as our experience exceeded many four stars we’ve stayed in. Our breakfast was again delicious. The staff are all attentive and couldn’t do enough for us. It has ample parking and a beautiful rear garden with seating. If we are in the region again, we would wholeheartedly head for The Tumbling Weir, Thank~you
